Thank you for putting this video together! I grew up playing the Amiga version but managed to get the PC DOS VGA version when I was older. Everything seemed the same, but the sound was off compared to my childhood memories. Now I know why :P
Sound was off because the PC version doesn't use digital (PCM) samples like the Amiga, but MIDI synthesis, which sounds like tin can garbage. (MIDI synthesis always sounds like tin can garbage; for MIDI to produce commercial quality sound, the PC would have had to have been connected to tens, possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars of expensive synthesizers and sound generating equipment). In short: until the SoundBlaster card, PC sound sucked when compared to the Amiga's digital sample replay.
No bonus for the Amiga AGA version??? It's basically the same as the PC VGA version with an added automapper. Lynx version looks like it might have been awesome to have EotB portable.
@@_WORG_ That's cool, with so many games with so many versions (especially with so many now being remade for retro systems) it must be a nightmare at times. One other thing I don't know if you know about, is that the ending on the PC version is different to the Amiga (I think all other versions also) On the PC it ends with just a wall of text, whereas the Amiga has a cinematic ending which is different to the PC story text and is far better.
@@daishi5571 yes I heard that at the time, I think because the floppy capacity on amiga can reach 800Ko compared to the pc it's 720Ko, that's why the developers are forced to remove the cutscene
Its cool and weird how many ports this got. Must have been a successful game at the time. Too hard for me thou. The amiga version had a creepy vibe. Very nice music.
It's one of the most iconic, cult games in the history of gaming. You bet your patootie that it was not only successful, but extremely successful; if "Dungeon Master" on the ATARI ST invented the genre, it's "Eye of the Beholder" who set the standard by which all other such fantasy role playing games are measured by, to this present day, and not just for graphics and sound, but for the quality of the story as well as the atmosphere.
A built in map would have been a godsend for this game But I’ve heard the sega cd music and it’s simply obnoxious, it really didn’t fit the game at all Just because you could doesn’t mean you should, it was out of place and intrusive. Imagine playing baldurs gate to “da rude sandstorm”…
The music in the Sega CD version seems so out of place! It would be more fitting for a futuristic racing game or a cyberpunk action platformer XD. As for the CGA version: does anyone have any footage from it while using composite output? Looks like the game uses heavily some rasterization which (purposefully) will create extra colors on composite! (for those who do not know: vies some videos about CGA and composite; e.g. from The 8-bit Guy: ruclips.net/video/niKblgZupOc/видео.html)
There is also an Amiga AGA version which is the PC VGA version with an automapper. Also the Amiga version has a much better cinematic story ending, while the PC has just a wall of text to read.
@@davidbenjamin7539 My complaints against the Sega CD is that the voiceover sounds really lazy, and the music.....what is this a SHMUP?? The game is fine but I never felt the need to finish it because I had already done so on the Amiga with better controls (I guess you could go by the mouse but would you ??
@@daishi5571 the Sega cd controlled better. You could hold b button and use d-pad to move in all directions. Making you cruise much quicker through the dungeons.
@@drunkensailor112 Ok thats the movement, but what about going through the inventory, transfering items between characters....basically everything else.
That's right! The AGA version uses the VGA graphics which were the best, but provides the higher quality Amiga sound. Unfortunately, I could not get the AGA version to work correctly on my A1200; there are some data corruption bugs.
@@AnnatarTheMaia You just need to save the game, restart and reload. That fixes up these occasional palette corruption bugs. Only happened 2-3 times during my full playthrough.
Wow, the PC98, SEGA and NES versions are nuts... either nonsensical, bad music, or goa trance while playing Eye of the Beholder, someone was tripping... PC versions except for the VGA are shitty, and all the PC versions have shitty sound compared to the Amiga... even the recent Commodore64 version is better... at the end of the day, Amiga still has the best version.

I never thought I would see an Eye of the Beholder Intro with Turrican Music lol
I have seen a C64 version. That is a masterpiece of programming.
The music from the PC98 version is amazing
Interesting to see how the soundtrack (or lack of) varies so much.

Those SSI D&D games were a big deal at the time. There were a lot of D&D nerds who also had a computer of some sort

SEGA CD version is special because it has a build-in dungeon map. This port also has the best music, imo.

The Sega CD version was the first time i was exposed to Dungeons and Dragons.
Will play for the first time. What console version is advised? Will play on the retro handheld
I don't know if you would call the Lynx version a prototype. It's actually the full game, just unreleased.
