In the Smile version of this song Tim Staffell sung first and second part of the song, while Roger sung the last part. In the Queen demo Freddie sung the two first parts and Roger the last one. In the Queen I album, Freddie sung it entirely. But there was a reunion of Smile some years ago, and Brian, Roger and Tim each sung a part.
Doing Alright - by May/Staffel John: Bass Brian: Piano, backing vocals, electric and acoustic guitars Freddie: Lead and backing vocals Roger: Backing vocals and drums
I think they were all working on degrees during thise years. Mercury - graphic art and design, Taylor - dentistry, Deacon - electrical engineering, May - infrared astronomy - later got a PhD in it.
Yes, experimentation. Your right they took what they had access to and tried to make the best of it. I think I had heard on an interview that they were not happy at all with how the instruments sounded. Thanks for the reactions!
thanks for your reaction. I like hearing your perspective. This reminds me of: Tim - I will get some blues in here. Brian - I shall slam some prog rock on top and stop that nonsense Freddie- just give me something to sing
Thanks for this reaction Justin. Delving into Queen's first album is rarely done so it is a real treat for me. In some of the interviews with the band, I heard them say that they were not pleased with the sound of this first album. Apparently Roy Thomas Baker (?) or perhaps Trident (?) tended to somehow tamp down the sound in the studio and it was exactly the OPPOSITE of what the band wanted. I heard Brian say something to the effect.."being the precocious boys we were...we soon made our views known.." ... and I sure can hear the difference in the sound of the instrumentation between this first album and Queen 2, as well as all the albums that follow - Sheer Heart Attack, A Night at the Opera, etc. From this first album, my favorite is "Liar"... can't wait to hear your reaction.
Elton John? Not so fast! Great King Rat up next is my fav. brother. The album as a whole is a masterpiece, IMO. I guess I'd say Queen II is more open sounding and cleaner than the debut as has been pointed out. Wonderful vocal harmonies, yes?
Apparently they were given unused studio time in a lot of different places and they were with Trident at the time, who were trying to push them in a direction they were not interested in going. It was not only a mess, by the time the album finally came out, it was old and not to current trends. Fortunately the second album came more quickly. I actually like a lot of the tracks on this album, it was my first introduction to Queen and I was impressed by the instrumentation and also by the vocals. This song however, was never a favorite of mine. You can feel the pulling between the two writers, Tim seemingly wanting the more of a blues sound from the guitar and I am guessing Brian wanting more of a hard rock sound and they just seem to clash. The song is not very cohesive in my opinion but it is not a bad song, if it came from a thousand other bands I would call it a successful track, but knowing the potential of the members of Queen, it just doesn't make my list of favorites.
It took a long time because they couldnt get anyone to release the record Eventually Trident took a chance to release it themselves Second Trident were middle men for EMI And third They had no royalties so Freddie took them to find a lawyer and manager Then they were direct with EMI and got royalties

That hiss and noise is beautiful

You're so lucky to be experiencing all this magic for the first time

Great to hear early music from them. Great choice.
Start to hear Freddies pipes! :)

Because of your musical chops I anticipate your comments that make me laugh. There is a cleaned up version. Nice 🙏🍁
After you do Queen 1 & 2, watch the Rainbow '74 concert & see how the songs grew when they got them on-stage.
pretty cool!
Deep cut
Love both the Queen and Smile versions. Tim was a pretty damn good singer.
Tim released new solo album lately. I have to check it out.
While this entire album is pretty lo-fi, it is a great snapshot of Queen's humble beginnings and gives us a taste of what was to come.
QUEENS fountain of Lamneth 👍😊 sorry could be longer with no issue of boredom

Great King Rat, Liar, and Son And Daughter are all great tunes on this album. Not that this one is bad.
