    I love how you got the Yucca from your mom. I did too. We actually discovered that the stem had snapped and now I have 2 Yucca. The oldest Yucca is 27 years old, same as me and it's mother went to my sister who is 31 and the Yucca is also the same age as her.
    It's our family plant

      Yeah winter hasn't been the best for mine since I've gotten him. He's enjoying the artificial light but he's seems to be sucking up humidity like a cactus after a good storm. Oh well, I crave a good amount of water too. As soon as spring hits I'll set him out on my porch we're he'll be fine. Let me know if you have anymore questions! Plant prudently!

    There used to be one of those growing outside of a dentist's office on Central Ave in Augusta, Georgia! I couldn't believe it survived outside in the ground for years and years, but it did! It developed a big caudex at the base of the biggest cane and smaller suckers grew out of that caudex. They tore down that office but someone got the yucca cane tree so I guess its in someone's solarium or yard up on the hill in Summerville or out in Evans or Martinez at some fat cat's mansion! I always thought that was cool about that yucca. It was huge and yes it was one of these plants you are describing in today's video. Your videos are great!!

      That would be so cool to see. I always love finding little treasures like that at Universities, offices, and other miscellaneous spots. That definitely sounds like they got a great score! My old house had this huge willow tree literally 5 houses down from me along side this creek that i drove by every day. Now I only see it maybe once every couple of months, but it's still there doing good. Thanks for watching!

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 года назад +10

      Ok this may be a little bit of work but I've saved some of my plants with this method. Before you begin make sure you sanitize whatever tools you may be using, pruning shears, root rake, root fork etc. Rubbing alcohol works but so does hot soap and water. The first thing you need to do is take your plant out of the pot and remove all the soil from its roots. Take your time and don't be super rough, also take care not to puncture your plant with any tools you may be using. If you do, put some 100 % cinnamon over the wound to keep it sanitized. Once you get rid of whatever you can by hand you can take your plant and rise off the smaller pieces of substrate in the sink or outside with the hose if you have a large plant. After that take your plant and look it over very closely. You wanna look out for any discolored roots, any that are mushy or any that smell. All this will indicate rotted roots. Cut off the infected roots, you want to cut it all off and leave the healthy areas exposed. Once you've removed ALL the infected roots sit your plant down and grab some bleach. Fill up your sink or a bucket or even tub with lukewarm almost hot (be careful not to burn your roots or your plant) water. Pour in a half a cap of bleach per gallon of water. Do not over pour or get sloppy with it either. Place your plant roots first into the water. Stand up the plant and completely submerge the roots to be effective. Keep the plant in the water for about 5 minutes. Once time is up spray off the roots fairly well to knock off most of the leftover bleach. Next prop up your plant in the bucket or tub or wherever and focus your attention on the pot. Now you can either purchase a brand new one or use the same one. If you choose the latter empty the pot completely and then use HOT water and bleach on it and use a scrub brush too if you can. Make sure you clean every part of the pot too, underneath and in any crevices or cracks, all over. Following all this you need to then use brand NEW soil. I suggest anything marketed towards cacti and succulents because they drain fast. Some people like to take rocks and add them into the bottom of the pot to help with drainage. I don't subscribe to this idea. Rocks tend to help the dirt clump up and sort of coagulate, thereby further impeding water from running out freely. If you want to help with the drainage use builders sand, perlite or pumice and just mix it into the soil. Usually around 3 parts soil to 1 part additive. Make sure your pot doesn't have a saucer or tray under it but if it does ALWAYS drain it after 20 minutes. After this amount of time the plant has already absorbed as much water as it can hold. I have found it helpful for me to keep a log of how much I've watered each of my plants and how often. Let me know if you have anymore questions or comments. Plant prudently!

      Yes these guys love a good amount of bright to bright indirect sunlight. Too much can burn the leaves or even dry out your plant and encourage pests in their stressed state. They don't need too much water but oddly enough they do enjoy a moderate amount of humidity. Hope yours makes a smooth turn around. Good luck!

    I’m very happy! I have a huge Yuka plant that is getting far too big, it’s as high as the ceiling and about 5ft wide!! and now I know I can cut it back and replant bits. I really felt bad just cutting it back after all it’s effort in growing!😅 I feel more like it’s having children now though 😂 weird thing is that we bought two at the time, and the other is only around 4ft tall with much more spindly stalks. I’d post pics of the comparison but I don’t know how!

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 года назад +1

      Wow that's awesome. Yours must be fairly old to be that big. I've had mine over a year now and I got it from my mom and she had it about three years. Its put on a good amount of mass too. Yes just get you a sharp pruning saw and just cut it to the height you want it to be. I usually use 100 % cinnamon to cover up any cut. Cinnamon is a natural antibiotic that will keep viruses and bacteria and other assortments from entering the opening. Where is the other one located? It almost sounds etiolated, is it getting the right amount of light? Good luck and let me know if you have anymore questions!

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  3 года назад

      Yes just remember newer plants like bright indirect light. They need to be introduced to direct sunlight slowly or the leaves will burn easily. Once he's been established you can give him more direct light longer. Water only when all the soil is dry. If you stick your finger down in the soil and you feel any moisture at all hold-off. They come from hot environments and typically thrive on neglect. Don't water or feed that often. Though you can give them some light humidity to help them out some. If you have any questions or concerns just shoot me a message and I'll tell you what I know! Thanks for watching, and plant prudently!

    Hello Green Alchemist. I really found this video insightful! I am wondering if you can help me out with my yucca plant, as I see you have a lot of experience with these types of plants. My yucca plant is roughly 15 years old. It was doing really well. About 4 years ago, an independent baby yucca plant started growing on the side. It eventually grew to about 20 inches high. However, the 'main yucca plant' started to rot. Because I have no experience with plants, I just left it there. But about a week ago, I took action. Basically the 'main yucca plant' was entirely rotten, and I carefully took it out of the pot and it was not even attached to any roots! So I threw it out. I made sure to sterilize all the tools I was using. I took the baby yucca plant (which is healthy and that now had a bit of skin at the bottom) and its roots and replanted in a brand new pot with fresh soil (palm tree soil because it's better with drainage). I also watered it, which I now regret, because the soil was already quite damp in the package. It's now been a week after the repotting, and the leaves of my baby yucca have softened a bit and they are less vibrant green (slowly yellowing), and they are drooping. WHAT DO I DO?! I really want to save the plant. I am assuming I should not water it anymore, but do you have any suggestions. Thank you kindly for your time :)

  • @JerseyBoy680
    @JerseyBoy680 2 года назад

    Great video. Thanks!
    My first yucca died. I think the issue was that I was not watering it enough and never fertilized it once. My second one, which I currently have, was starting to kick the bucket. I took her outside where she can have humidity and sunlight, and I have been fertilizing her. She seems to be doing well now! I would love if some more leaf bunches would sprout out of the cane to rebalance the plant, as a sizeable number of leaf bunches (about 15 percent on the taller cane and 50 percent on the little one) died. If anyone knows what the leaf bunches are called, feel free to let me know. Google is not helping. 😝

    I have a Yucca Cane plant that has lost a lot of leaves due to drying out, yet the soil was moist. The stalks of the new growths are quite a bit smaller in width than the original. Will the stalks eventually become larger in width or will they remain thin? The leaves used to stand out vertically and now they are growing downward. Is this normal ?

    Maann, I needs your green thumb. About to start/ plant avocado tree and lemon tree in Texas. My neighbor had a lemon tree, but she left it in front yard facing west and it died in August. My front porch facing east, and backyard facing west. So hopefully this works. Other neighbor has just to many cats and they always peeing, pooping in our front yards. Uuggh 🤦‍♀️. Dont get me wrong I love pets, but these cats are killing my outdoor plants. Glad you still doing vids. 👍 P.S I bought two yucca trees, about two feet tall only, pretty expensive here. Remind me of grandma, she had all kind of cactuses, aloe vera, mint, yucca trees, nut trees, and she had that green thumb too. Thanks 👍

      I will give you all the knowledge of mine you wish to have. I have over 15 years of experience with this stuff and working with plants. Experience or a friend with experience goes a long long way with these guys. As for your cat problem I can relate to that. I live outside a large city in Kentucky more in the foothills outside eastern Kentucky and we have our fair share of them up here. My fiance has 3. One inside and two outside. They can do just as much good or even more good then they do bad, and the bad they do is just because they dont know any better. Often they'll scratch my saplings just because they need a place to sharpen their claws. That's cool because you can actually purchase protection bags and other things that can go around the saplings to keep them from doing that and tearing them up. As for their waste problem you can deter cats by planting citrus scents like lemongrass, citronella, orange, or even lemon peels work. Coffee grounds suffice, as well as vinegar, lavender oil, eucalyptus oil and tobacco can deter them too. You may also have a little bit better luck redirecting them to another location with catnip or even catmint that most cats can't resist. They also like to bury their waste so a place with sand will help them not bury their waste in your plant beds. Though be warned! They like clean areas so if you don't remove their waste from time to time they'll just move elsewhere. That is just the organic way, you can also purchase motion activated devices that emit a noise that only cats can hear to keep them away. This may seem like some work especially if they aren't your cats but don't forget cats always keep vermin and most diseases down to a minimum and will thereby keep you happy and a little more healthy too. It means a lot that you enjoy my videos! It seems like you come from a very healthy and plant friendly family with green thumbs too. Good luck with your yucca plants! Plant prudently!

    we purchased our plant last spring and it has lived in the house, north exposure but in front of a sliding door. living in Minnesota I will be reluctant to take it outside for the summer because of other bugs. It was beautiful upon purchase but in the last 4 months it started to die off. I watered as directed and now I'm down to very little foliage. It was in a typical shipping greenhouse 12 inch planter and they told me to leave it in that planter for at least a year before replanting. I know at one time I overwatered it but then abstained. Today I removed it from the pot, it apearsed root bound but not overly wet. I'm going to let it dry out for a few days and replant it in a pourous pot. Am I doing the right thing?

    My yucca plant isn't doing well. I bought the plant around August this year, watered it in Sept. Noticed one of the plants in the pot was turning yellow shortly after so I didn't water it again so that it will dry out completely. Today (Dec 17th) I used my moisture meter to check the plant and it's still moist at the bottom but dry on the surface. Can I water the plant now? Btw the plant that was turning yellow earlier has lost most of its leaves now 😣 but the other 2 yucca plants in the pot are doing fine so far

Do you think I'm wasting time because its gonna die anyways or is there a chance to save it & the leaves can become straight again? Please help

    Hi, my children just bought me a yucca for mothers day, so I appreciate your advice on that. But what I really need help with before they are completely gone is my little Orange Tree plants . I started them from seeds and several didnt make it. But I was able to keep 4 of them alive, but not thriving by any means. I have had them for 3 years and now their leaves are falling off and i see some sort of tiny flying things by them and when I watered them yesterday I noticed some sort of tiny gross white wiggly things in the soil. I HAVE DOUSED THEM WITH Neem Oil from top to bottom and poured a diluted neem oil into their soil. But that hasnt seemed to help them. So I bought some Houseplant and Garden Insect Killer by Garden Safe and sprayed them lightly with that yesterday. I also sprayed the soil some because I saw those creepy white wiggly things. I'm so afraid that they are going to die and I've tried so hard to keep them alive. The seeds were from my uncle's oranges off his tree in Arizona. I live in Minnesota so it' really been a struggle. I would like to share a pucture of them with you, so maybe you can tell what might be going on and offer some advice on how I can save them and help them to thrive. PLEASE I AM DESPERATE TO SAVE THEM!!! Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. And time is really of the essence right now so the sooner you would be able to get back to me the better I appreciate it so much

      A good organic approach to fighting back pests is neem oil or azamax. You can get them both off Amazon and the latter is a little expensive but they both work well. Use the neem oil sparingly though because it smells a little. As for the mold you can use a copper fungicide to fight that back. If you wish to go a more orgainc route you can use two teaspoons of organic apple cider vinegar per quart of distilled water. Then spray that were needed. You can also use 100 % cinnamon too. It is a natural antibiotic and can fight off fungi, disease and bacteria with any of your plants. I use it all the time to deter any unwanted mushroom growth and incase I accidentally nick a plant and want to keep bacteria and disease and rot from entering it. If you are having a problem with pests and mold consider improving the airflow around your plant(s). Anytime you have avid moisture/humidity around them without any air movement you invite rot, fungi, bacteria and pests into your plants and their environment.

    So I live in a decently humid climate in the summer (Missouri) but I’d like to have this new yucca inside sometimes because it’s nice to look at. Would it be wise to sometimes have the plant outside on my covered porch in order for it to get good sunlight and humidity to grow, and some days bring it back inside? Or would that stress it out?

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 года назад +1

      I move mine, though not that often. But I'd say any given year I've moved him around 5 to 10 times depending on how much rain were getting. I think it would be fine to do that. They are a somewhat hardy and I don't think moving them around several times will bother it as long as your not going through extreme temperature fluctuations with it. Make sure when you sit him outside for the first couple of times you acclimate him slowly. The leaves can and will burn. Also when you bring it back in make sure you give it some humidity too. I bought a humidifier for mine and its help tremendously!

There’s heavy thick layers of what looks like mildew. I could use your opinion on whether that’s the cause of my yucca dying or a water issue.

      Yes, I want to see some pictures of the plant. I need to see the trunk, the stems/leaves, the container and substrate. I also want to see the immediate surrounding location that the plant is in. Watering two weeks sounds like it may be right on track but what you really need to be aiming for is the soil drying out between waterings. You should also stick your finger down in the soil to make sure its dried out down in the center of the container. What usually causes mildew is some water with stagnant air. Turn the ceiling fan on or purchase an oscillating fan to keep air moving around the plant. That all being said they do enjoy a little bit of humidity too. Somewhere around 20% is idea. I also posted a past video dealing with fungi and powdery mildew. Milk may help, it never did with me but every plant is different. If you notice it doesn't help you may want to use neem oil (just a little bit, that stuff stinks) or rubbing alcohol. Just apply either to a washcloth or a q-tip and then wipe it down. If it still persists then try some copper fungicide. They sell them at Lowe's and home depot. I purchased a humidifier for mine and its helped tremendously. Again if you do increase the humidity make sure you have some decent air movement. Let me know if you have anymore questions or concerns about the plant or anything I said. Good luck, plant prudently!

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  3 года назад

      I don't believe I said to water him that often. I know that I said that they are desert dwellers and that they need to dry out completely before you water them again. You don't want a plant that hails from particularly arid environments to sit in saturated soils for long. Especially now in the cooler months, it will take longer still for the root mass to dry out completely between waterings What soil did you use when you repotted? How many drainage holes does your pot have? Do you keep a saucer underneath? Do you give it tap water? What is the humidity like in the room he's in? Now it is normal for older leaves to turn yellow/brown naturally. Just remove those with sanitized shears. You should only worry if it happens often and all over the plant.

    I believe that this particular species is or is almost extinct in it's natural habitat in Mexico...at least that's what I was told by a plant importer from Los Angeles a few years ago! I know that these will form a caudex and get really tall!

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 года назад

      That is so sad when you find out that a species is becoming endangered/extinct in its environment because of human settlement or deforestation. It is almost bitter sweet because they have plenty for sell at big box stores to be sold as an indoor plant. Yes about 30-40 feet I believe.

    Hey :) I found your video when I was googling yucca care. I got a yucca tree from ikea about 3 years ago and I just finally repotted it in a 50/50 mix of potting soil and perlite. I’ve been worried that it might hold too much water. Do you think it’ll be ok?

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 года назад

      So perlite is a little tricky. On one hand it does retain a decent amount of water due to its larger surface area along with some nooks and crannies that will retain it. On the other hand because it is porous it allows water to drain more readily than say vermiculite and it also improves soil aeration. If it were me I probably would have gone with builders or horticultural grade sand. However if you did recently repot it I would wait at least three or four months to give the plant time to recover from transplant shock before doing it again. I assume your pot that it is in has adequate drainage holes? For the time being I just would water him less often. Let him dry all the way out before you water again!

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 года назад +1

      So me personally I don't like putting any rocks in the bottom of a container. I'm not sure how that got started but if you think about it putting a decent amount of rocks, even just enough to cover the bottom of the pot, will cause the soil and the rocks along with the water to coagulate and clog up any of the drainage holes. If you want the soil to drain better add in some horticultural sand or perlite or pumice.

      Did you tamp the soil down by hand while you were repotting? If not you run the risk of leaving air bubbles around the roots that can wreak havoc on them. If not caught early enough the plant will die. If you haven't done this just push evenly around the entire base of the plant and all around the top of the soil. Don't press too hard or you can break roots or just damage the plant. Watering should have corrected some of the problem but it won't do it all.

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  2 года назад

      Watch him closely. He's very stressed out and you'll want to make sure you do nothing else to stress him out even more. Obviously no more water for a little bit. These guys are used to dealing with drought so keep that in mind. They normally need a decent amount of sunlight but you don't want to give him a bunch right now since he's trying to recover. I would put him in a bright area with indirect sunlight. Something like a south or west window but scooted back a bit, with curtains/blinds. He'll need dappled/filtered light. The key is lower amounts for longer periods of time. If you have led grow lights this would probably be best for now. This would give you the right quality for the correct duration. If you're interested you can see the ones I use from Amazon in the description box of all my videos if you wanted to purchase one. I really wouldn't water again until you see signs of recovery i.e. new growth. Since you won't be watering a bunch make sure you keep the humidity in check. Typically these guys enjoy a little humidity somewhere around 25-40% or so. Now, you'll want to keep it between 40-60%. This will keep him from drying all the way out and attracting pests like mealy bugs. Anytime you increase humidity you'll want to also increase airflow as well. Added humidity in a warm environment will encourage fungi, bacteria, and pests that will all bring in new problems. Usually, an oscillating fan will suffice, but make sure it's not pointed directly or even close to the plant. At least a meter away and oscillating. I wouldn't feed right now either. These plants aren't heavy feeders and added fertilizers run a risk of burning him out especially if you do too much. Don't let the temperature get too low either, never lower than 60°F and no more than 75°F. Once temps get higher than 80°F plants stop photosynthesizing. Keep him away from drafty windows/doors, and air vents, or heaters. Depending on how severe the situation is, you may need to take him out of the pot and operate. Root rot will be the cause of death but it doesn't have to be. If you think he may have a problem with root rot let me know and I'll tell you how to deal with that or you can watch my video on dealing with root rot. If you have any questions on anything I said please let me know and keep me updated if you can! Good luck!🌲

    Can I keep it in the sunlight or light?

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 года назад +1

      So in the summer I keep mine outside on the porch. If they aren't used to the direct sunlight it can burn their leaves and seriously dry them out. In fact you could end up attracting pests in your plants stressed out state. Some mature or even potted plants can take some bright direct light. A lot enjoy bright indirect sunlight, as do all that are kept indoors. If yours has been indoors all winter then introduce it back slowly. 30 mins one day, hour the next, 1.5 the following etc. LEDs work nice too.

    I just bought a rather large one yesterday. I repotted it, and cleaned all its leaves off. I have zero clue what I’m doing. I have mine indoors, and have a saucer underneath. Kind of hard to keep it indoors without a saucer underneath. Also, how can I keep this guy upright? I feel like an idiot now, because I packed new soil in when I repotted it, and it’s not cactus soil. 🤦‍♀️

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 года назад

      So you don't want to repot this heavy plant with only porous sand laden cacti soil. You have to mix in some rather hefty soil too to make sure it will keep him upright. I think I used raised garden bed soil with like a 4:1 ratio or something like that. You definitely want to wipe the leaves down too from time to time. This helps them photosynthesize and breathe better too. I use a solution of warm distilled water and lemon juice with another 4:1. Yes I hear you on the saucer but ALWAYS make sure you empty it after, these guys hate having wet feet all day. Light, don't forget these guys are from around the desert environments and they get at least 6+ hours of direct to mostly direct sunlight. I say mostly direct because well established plants like bright but if yours has sat in a store for God knows how long then you need to acclimate slowly because the leaves will burn. I also only feed mine ONCE a year in the middle of spring. Being from desert areas they thrive on neglect. If you feed it often your gonna build up toxic salt levels in your substrate and kill your plant. I water mine 3-4 cups of water every 8-12 days. You want the soil to dry out COMPLETELY in between waterings. As the heat index goes up your water intake levels need to go up too! Let me know if you have anymore questions, good luck!
