How to grow Yucca plants from cuttings

- Yucca Care Instructions.
Light
The Yucca plant is one garden and houseplant which will be quite happy with as much sun as you can give it. Indoors a South facing window would be the first choice. Whatever your light situation try to provide as much as possible. Less bright conditions will slow growth considerably (which may be an advantage) however very shady and dark spots must be avoided to maintain a healthy looking plant.
Soil
Yucca plants need soil with excellent drainage. A mix of equal parts potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite will provide enough drainage for yucca plants. Cacti and palm soil blends can be purchased and work great for growing yuccas.
Watering
Water your Yucca liberally during warmer months of the year. Like all plants it's impossible to give rigid watering intervals, but if conditions are exceptional (bright, warm etc) you could be looking to do this as frequently as once a week or more. The soil should dry out a little between watering's. In Winter a lot less water is required.
Humidity
Moderate humidity will be helpful, however misting of the leaves isn't needed.
Feeding
A feed once a month or so would be appreciated during the growing seasons.
Temperature
Your Yucca will tolerate a wide range of temperatures, but average home temperatures are best. Cooler in Winter if possible, but not lower than 7°C / 45°F.
Repotting
It's not essential, but a good rule of thumb is to repot every two years in Spring. The plants tend to become top heavy as most of the weight is centered at the top of the Yucca, planting in a deep heavy container will help prevent the plant from tipping over.
There is a more complicated method of taking Yucca root cane cuttings, however as we haven't done this ourselves we can't with good faith recommend it. The easer method is to remove the offsets that are produced from the trunk and pot them up.
Propagation
Chances of the offsets growing will increase if you use a rooting hormone. Water well when first potting up, and then only again when the top inch of the soil has dried out, constantly moist conditions will encourage rot. The offsets should not be fed and should be kept out of direct sunlight until established.
Speed of Growth
Yucca's grow slowly.
Height / Spread
Generally it is a narrow plant only spreading to around 50cm / 20in, however it can reach staggering heights of up to 4.5m / 15ft after many years.

Super Video! Nicht quatschen, sondern machen! Du hast alle Sprach-Videos übertrumpft! Perfekt!!
Best educational video on propagation ever!!!!!!
Thank you for a wonderful professional video and job! No bla bla bla but just step by step action! Thank you!!!
Thank you for this video, I have one huge yucca, and have been nervous, but after everything I have seen, seem pretty easy! I've had it for about 12 years, and I always just went a pot bigger when needed, thank you so much!
Thank you lord I almost broke into tears because I broke my plant from a slight pull moving it around in my bedroom because it was growing so tall into my blinds so thankful to come across this video. Very nice video!! ☺️
Propergated 7 Yucca plants today from the instructions on this video.
I pray that they grow and don't just rot.
EDIT: After 3 weeks they are still alive and green. Although I haven't checked the roots as I don't want to disturb any growth, they look like they are doing fine.
@Gerardo Cason I wish you the best of luck.
Mine all grew and are looking fantastic.
Grabbing some purple ones to grow now. Simpliest things ever to grow.
After 3 months, are they still alive? I am asking because I have one that stopped growing leaves and before it dies, I would like to try propagating.

Lepo i korisno prikazano. Pozdrav, hvala
Drainage is the answer!!
fist layer in the pot should be shingle!
This video is therapeutic 😌
Yeah I sunk in pretty deep and Colgate decides to slip in out of nowhere.
The absolute best video I have found on the various way to propagate a yucca, well done and thank you so much. I have a beautiful yucca that I want to propagate for gifting and trading so I can share the joy of living with a yucca. Thanks again!
Love this video. I was Yucca heaven. Learn so much from you. Thank you.
Excellent in all respects. Off into my plant house now to follow these instructions.
Wow. Look like very easy to take care it. Thank you for sharing! Let go to make some plants babies.
Yukkas are the easiest plants to propagate 100% successfully in a warm climate. I dip the cuttings in hormone rooting powder just to make sure. They grow to the size of a tree outside eventually and are quite impressive.
peter seddon please which month or season to do
Most of the year except wınter. Especıally ın warm countrıes
Any chance you could post a video or know a better one than this one thanks
@peter seddon and,
@Melanie Cape Town ...
I am inferring that you Melanie, live in Southern Africa?
To you both:
Respectfully, may I ask (just approximately) where each of you live?
What are your winter seasons like, such that you're able to grow yuccas outside, year-long, and to "tree-like" proportions? :)
Lastly, my curiosity is asking what dimensions you've obtained with your outdoor yuccas? That is to ask:
1. How thick can the diameter of the trunks get? And,
2. How tall have they gotten?
...just approximately, of course.
Thank you so very kindly, congratulations, and enjoy!
It's all quite exciting!
Sincerely,
~ Justin 😁🪴🌴
It's been about 8 weeks now since I did this and they are still going strong. So, I guessed that they are still alive and rerooted? And it was so easy.
Happy. Happy. Happy.
I'm going to do the one with the wax. At Bunnings they are $35 or $40 for a tiny one!!!
Agree with Bevie. All I needed to know. Thanks
Bravo thjesht , bukur , lehte pa problem dhe mbjellje e sigurte . Bravo .
Love Yucca plants!
Gracias por el video, desde Quilmes, Buenos Aires, Argentina. 👍🌱🌱🌱🌱
LOVE IT GREAT JOB!!!!
No need words... Only this espectacular job.. Congrats and thank you.. Blesses!
My yucca cane has 5 or 6 heads on it, and they are lean and not doing good. I think I should cut and plant them! Thanks
¡ Así es !
I enjoyed watching !
Thanks !
Looks beautiful....I have one...didn’t know you can do that....thnx for sharing
Thank you for sharing!I'm glad to see you'r video!
Great video. Thank you !
Love yucca , propagation is so easy with these plants , i have so many now I'm thinking of selling them .
Or eat them!
Thank you very much. .. from Algeria
Great video!. Thanks for sharing.
I just received my 1st yucca today. My friend and I separated it from a larger one. Hopefully in 3-5 months it will still be alive. Lol...this video is very helpful
Yucca is very easy to propagate so don’t worry, just don’t water it too much while it hasn’t developed roots yet.
👏👏👏👏parabéns...sem enrolação 🙌🇧🇷
Amazing plants!
I have some big yucca's and wanted to transplant them. And watchinging this vid i remembered that you could buy years ago Yucca stems,2-3 inches long, waxed both ends and plant then and hey ho a Yucca plant would grow!
Wicked! They are nearly indestructible! Mine have inch stems so gonna give it a go!!
Cool vid Thanks!!!!
May I ask what you mean? "Both ends are waxed?"
Are you saying that you cut the trunk in half...
This gives you two halves, of course.
1. Half of a trunk, with roots, but no leaves, and you wax the top (where the leaves WERE).
You plant this, and new growth appears? Where?
2. The other half of the trunk has leaves, but no roots.
You wax the bottom of this piece, where the roots WERE. Then plant the waxed bottom, and new growth occurs?
Where is the growth? Do roots grow through the wax?
@@MMAFightMagazine 5.00 your question is answered.
Wax is to stop plant from losing its moisture. Also for stalks with both ends waxed, put 1 waxed end in soil, water and it will root and as in 5.00 new growth will sprout out of the side.
@@djyul OH okay, thank you. I have a half dozen, and can't seem to get any new growth, so I've been hesitant about cutting off the last off-shoot from a given plant.
But... I guess the plant won't produce new shoots unless all others have been removed, is that correct?
Again, thank you! :)
@@MMAFightMagazine
Patience dude!
Yucca's produce pups, like a tuba/potato. I transplanted 6 of these. First took about 10 weeks to start new growth.
Do not over water!!!
@@djyul Don't over water? Good to know. In the video, he seems to be soaking his plants.
I know! Patience is tough! Lol. I live in Southern Canada, so not the longest growing season, but i have had them for over two years now. I purchased three, and each had two or three shoots. I've taken them off successfully for propagation, but they don't seem to want to grow much!
I know. Patience. :)
Thank you for the input and advice, sir.
May I ask what you meant by them producing pups like a tuba/potato?
Thank you, I needed to know this.
Thank you so much, very well done and so helpful.
So nice video Liked #7
Great video, not talking at all (wich I love) and very well explained. You saved a lot of money.
I have been eating yucca root my whole life. I've had this plant before and never knew. Peal it, boil it, drain and fry with some garlic, onions Olive oil. Salt and pepper yummy 😋
Super video, bravo 👏👍❤️🇲🇪💐🙋♀️😀
Really enjoyed this video and the music. 😊 Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for showing how to save my yucca! I saved one 12 years ago from a dumpster and I grew it from just one leaf that rooted in a glass of water. Now it's one stem and over 4 feet tall, which is too big for me. Now I know how to cut it back and grow more little ones on the main stem AND save the top leaves!
Lonneke Leeuwesteijn cute story :D
Love them after i saw them in joshua tree
Wow! Congratulations!!!
To be clear...
You found just a single leaf that had no stem?
That single leaf produced roots when put into water, and -when eventually planted into soil- became a "full" plant with a stem etc?
That's amazing!
Has anyone else had similar successes?
I'm not implying that I doubt anything, by any means! 😊
I only ask because I've made MANY attempts at propagation by removing leaves and placing them into various water sources, and I personally (and frustratingly) have never seen any indication of root formation.
Following various durations (up to six months) of time in the water, I plant them into soil.
After similar lengths of time in the soil, the leaves become hard, and the edges of the leaf curl inwards upon itself - similar to what a cinnamon stick looks like.
Upon removal, I have never seen even a hint of root growth.
I can't help but infer that I MUST be doing something wrong - if others are indeed succeeding.
Thank you kindly for any -and all- advice and thoughts!
Very sincerely,
Justin.
@@MMAFightMagazine I never did this before but all I did was place each leave in a seperate tupperware cup (the long and narrow ones so it keepts the leaves up right) with some tapwater and put them on the bathroom windowsill for 6 months. I totally forgot about them. From the 4 leaves one rooted and grew out to a new big plant. I guess it's just luck.
Hvala Vam,baš to je trenalo da vidim, kako se presađuje, pozdrab iz Srbije

The lyrics to the background music are "Right into the dirt, it won't hurt it."
Good luck watching this without hearing that now.
Very nice
Love the music and not for over doing the instructions with a lot of talking lol Thank you
خیلی عالی استفاده کردم
thanks for this beautiful video ,
I am wondering , what is the best month for Yucca propagation ?
Great video!! I just inherited my first Yucca plant. It’s very tall and only has one stalk(a crooked one). I would definitely like to propagate it. What is the best type of soil to use? Can you do this anytime of the year?
👏👏👏
Ah oui c'est beau
Superb superb 👌👌👌
GOD loves y'all and have a Blessed day😇🙏🏿🙏🏾🙏🏽🙏🏼🙏🏻🙏👼🏿👼🏾👼🏽👼🏼👼🏻👼
By far the best video I've ever seen about yucca's. Even without words, you covered everything, great job!
One question?
Around 7:11 you began trimming some roots. Why was this?
Were they dead, or was it to fit better into the pot, or for some other reason?
Thank you! Subbed!
I think it's because they grow so aggressively, trimming the roots will help it grow into the new pot
@@PareshPatel-xc2vu Oh? I'm not sure I understand, but I appreciate the response!
Thank you!
I think because of small pot , the roots started moving upwards, so while repotting , to give the roots right direction we have to cut the roots
thank you
Be good to hear
I moved into a place 2 years ago where one was established outside. It was so dead and ugly!! I just wanted it gone! Did some research and realize the flowers are edible! It still has produced one stem of flowers. I cleared away all the dead stuff on most of the plant...still some sponginess on some of the exposed roots that, some are a foot long. Is there any way that these can be salvaged and get new growth?? Now I’m very intrigued with this plant. And definitely gave it room to breathe, finally, after removing all the dead yucky stuff. Thanks for any input.
subur banget
Found a distressed yucca in the dumpster at my house. Rehabilitating it and going to do some cutting and propagation
Hii
I am your new friend
Nice video
Will the leaf's that you cut off, rot back and leave a bare stem?
I hope that you answer this question please.🤞
EDIT: No one answered. Thanks.
i dont think so,i think it will harden and be texture of tree
Woow.. It is smart n clever idea..thnx friend for very nice informational video.. Tc happy gardening 🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷
Też tak zrobiłem że swoimi yucca i 😉👍🌴🌴🌴
Окей! 👍👍👍👍😊😁
Thank you very match ❤️💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
can you propagate a yucca directly in ground or do you need to put in a pot first to take root?
Wow! Lot's of propagate yucca plants.Should I wait for my yucca plants to have a chunkier before I could propagate? Thanks fo the share.
Say something I’m giving up on you.
