Imo, the problem wasn't PG itself. It was the execution. Ex. John Cena. PG doesn't have to mean goofy, childish, kissing babies etc. It's still a wrestling show w/grown men & women who are supposedly competing w/ each other. And a lot of times it was just cheesy. It didn't help that the most successful person in the company during that era was fine being a Nickelodeon kids show character.

There was no other talent as big as Cena so who was gonna be champ or the face of the company? They tried to make Randy the face of the company but he couldn't get over as a baby face yet. Funny thing, as a kid, I was banned from watching WWE or any wrestling not too long after the Benoit family tragedy. I wouldn’t start watching regularly again until the Nexus storyline just before high school.
The product that I saw as a younger kid and the product I saw when starting high school was like night & day. It was nothing like the WWE that I used to enjoy, but that didn’t mean that I didn’t enjoy the product at all. The Nexus storyline was exciting for a while until they weren’t anymore (thanks Vince), and then Taker & Kane feuding was the only reason I was watching SmackDown at all at the time.
There was lots of issues that I had with the product during the early 2010’s, but there were many things I loved too. I knew WWE wasn’t gonna go back to how it was before. But I did hope for much better storylines and a somewhat edgier product, and overtime, we got that.
WWE doesn’t always have to have a bunch of swearing, bra & panty matches and over-the-top offensive segments in order for it to have a good product. But WWE also doesn’t need to be all cartoony just because they’re PG. You can still have a mature product that’s able to reach a wider demographic without turning it into Nickelodeon.

WWE never needed to go PG. "Taking heat off them" or "appeasing some sponsors" is rubbish. WWE went from being the most watched show on TV weekly to a joke.
Even if "some" heat was brought on WWE, its overall popularity overcame all of that. And when it comes to business, what really matters is supply and demand. Which 1997-2008 WWE dominated

You made some pretty good points in this video about WWE going TV-PG wasn’t going to so bad! And it’s got me thinking that WWE wasn’t in the worst position when they went TV-PG back in the late 2000s after all! After hearing the announcement that WWE going to have Monday Night Raw and Friday Night Smackdown on the USA Network, I decided then and there to stop watching WWE wrestling from here on out! Even though I decided to stop watching wrestling entirely this year in 2024, I will admit that WWE did have a lot of good moments throughout its run being a TV-PG wrestling show! And personally, if I had the chance to watch WWE wrestling again, the decades that I would choose would be the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and finally the 2010s IMHO! For me personally, the WWE will be the same ever again like back in the good old days of “The Golden Era/The Hulkamania Era”, “The New Generation Era”, “The Attitude Era”, “The PG Era” and “The Reality Era” IMHO!

That’s the huge problem with the WWE back then and the current product of the WWE which result in diehard wrestling fans not watching the product anymore and moving towards the UFC when the UFC was so popular around the mid late 2000sm. WWE lost that edge appeal that was so watchable back then, the dispicable storylines, Bras and Panties matches (albeit it, it’s good if they bring it back if the Women’s wrestlers agree to it), etc. Also Linda McMahon running for senate, the deaths of Eddie Guerrero and yes Chris Benoit, the main reason why they went PG. They also relied on merchandise sales with John Cena being the next Hulk Hogan during the Ruthless Agression era. Same situation ironically with the NFL going PG due to the fact that they show games on Nickelodeon and also kissing up to Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift’s relationship with Travis Kelce giving me Triple H and Stephanie McMahon vibes back in the Attitude Era which was annoying as hell and her polarizing figure since her relationship with Travis Kelce lowkey reminds me of John Cena when he moved from Smackdown to Raw in 2005, all the diehard wrestling fans turned on Cena, similar scenario gonna eventually happen with Taylor Swift moving forward.

During the 80’s and into the 1990’s, at least up until the steroid scandals took light, and the transition to the attitude era, WWF/E was mainly, for the most part, generally agreed as a PG-like atmosphere, and you did have children attend shows. It was the Monday Night Wars that caused WWF/E to change their focus to become more edgier and raunchy compared to the past.
The whole rumbling about a possible return to PG began to take seed in 2005, After We lost Eddie Guerrero from Drug overdose. At that time, pretty much everyone in the WWE, at least most male Wrestlers, and some Women were using roids in the business. That’s when the first health and drug testing programs came out, and, at the same time, they really began to draw heat from critics of the industry saying that they need to tone down their content.
However, after the Benoit Incident, the writing was on the wall, WWE could no longer run as a TV-14 product. Had they continued to run as TV-14, Chances were that the WWE would suffer financial losses from withdrawing sponsors, as well as the fans, especially the growing younger demographic, whose parents would not be okay with letting their children attend WWE events (with the content that they had in 2002-2008) and as a result, ticket sales would’ve dropped.
In addition, the move to PG actually helped with the health and well being of the wrestlers themselves. No longer were they taking risks with steroids, which does more harm than good the longer it is taken, (As well as an improved mental state so long as proper withdrawal techniques are used for a prolonged period of time to stay off the Roids), which helped lengthen the careers of some wrestlers who would have stopped wrestling had they kept on using steroids.
While one can claim that the PG change killed off the enjoyment of WWE that was found in the edgier continent and more skillfully executed and aggressive matches, the argument can also be made that the move to PG was a necessary step in the evolution of the industry.

    • @davidmatthewvinotjr8396
      @davidmatthewvinotjr8396 2 месяца назад

I personally think that it was a change that HAD to be made when they did it. No telling how many other wrestlers we could have lost, or have their careers shortened by injuries than we did, especially the younger wrestlers, had the wellness and content changes not have taken place. You could definitely question whether or not The WWE would still be as big of a part of entertainment today if they kept TV-14.

Unfortunately, a lot of the Gen Z kids will see this era as one of the best out of sheer nostalgia. However, this was when wrestling was watered down and the reason why wrestling fell out of favor in the mainstream. John Cena really is one of the greatest of all time because he single handedly led this CRAP era and prevented the WWE from going bankrupt. But, yeah, this era was complete crap.

For me my problem with the pg era is that the matches and booking felt so hollow. The storylines felt like Saturday morning cartoons. I grew up watching wwe in 2005. The storylines during the ruthless aggression had heart and it felt like a lot was on the line. For me that’s why 2012 was the cut off date in wrestling for me until 2023. I’m just hoping they bring back blading in some form.

Outside of merch. Sponorship is how wwe makes there money. During the attitude and Ruthless agression era they couldn’t get the major ones likes Coke o cola, mc Donald’s, subway, 7-11 etc. so that’s partly why wwe went PG. others is the deaths and such. Being PG doesn’t mean u have to be Disney like. But it means u have to watch what you say and or do

Well in 2008-earlier 2010 was alright the PG format but it got stale after the years and does not work anymore. But regardless if they go to TV 14 or MA that will not make the show good because they need storylines.

well no kidding lmao, undertaker, batista, shawn michaels, triple h were wrestling more commonly around that time, and kane was booked strong, then most of them left or transitioned to part time after wm26 or middle of 2010, and boom, wwe feels shallow and empty, thats why I don't believe in goat debates, it takes a roster, not 1 guy, otherwise we wouldn't notice anything as long as cena is the face guy of the company, but losing just those guys created a shift to a downward spiral with the product, hmmm

Tbh I take the PG era as imperative to WWEs current development. Because of the banning of chair shots and thanks to the neutered storylines, it’s given people time to think of new ways to take the sport even further while being more creative. Now I’d imagine it can be like the attitude era, minus the chair shots

As proven in Modern Media and Modern Disney media flopping, watering down and censoring entertainment always causes more harm than good. Movies, videogames, TV shows.
WWE made plenty of unnecessary changes. Today, most popular events in wrestling is some 5-minute clip of maybe some guest appearance.

Summerslam 2008 was PG. All they needed to do was keep the writing up to a higher standard. Wwe was pg well before the attitude Era and ruthless aggression Era as well. As far as i can remember only raw was tv14. Smackdown rarely was rated tv14. Maybe once or twice off the top of my head. Edge vs Undertaker in the cell was proof they COULD still do good stories. CM punk and Jeff Hardy is another one. People over hate PG, in some areas they are right. In others I think they just were fed up with the product being stale for them.
