If it is common for Vulcans to reassign “overly emotional” Vulcans to Starfleet, this explains every “un-Vulcan” thing we’ve seen from the other Vulcans serving in Starfleet over the years.
T'Pol is like "Goddammit..."
And even to those Vulcans it's apparently a punishment. XD
T'lyn will probably transfer to the Cerritos. It seemed implied.
The Vulcan ships must be unbearably boring...
@@Qq-xs1fz the Klingons were cool.
"Avoid death and cower" is just such a natural joke to hear from a Klingon
I guess you could say that living longer means you are necessarily avoiding death
Missed Captain Freeman's "RITOS" shirt, reference to Discovery's "DISCO" shirts
Was gonna mention that. No shout out to the DISCO shirt reference? Slacking!
Not gonna lie, I checked the merch store for one.
Sad that this got missed as well. I checked the merch store too. Not interested in a DISCO shirt, but sign me up for a RITOS shirt!
He always misses ups that should be counted. 🤦♂️
@@KaBoomStock SAME.
Loved the Borg lower decks, kept thinking something would happen but actually funnier how nothing did happen.
I have a sneaky suspicion that we'll be revisiting those four drones sometime next season.
@@hblanche the fact that the writers dug in with that joke shows true courage and was amazing
They’re like next tier vulcans
The fight on the Klingon bridge was superb. It's tense, it's earnest, it's dramatic, it's well choreographed and I bloody loved it.
When I saw the three lower decks crews my friend and I thought "What next, the Borg?"
This was the first time I ever laughed at the end credits.
to be fair this is the first time they've DONE anything during the end credits
I was half expecting Romulans but oh well
Strong t shirt game! Foundation was epic
I felt like the Klingon sharpening his teeth was a callback to Worf who enjoyed Nog's teeth sharpener after getting one at Quark's auction.
I'm very surprised you didn't mention the sniper rifle that can shoot through walls from deep space nine and esri
We have replicators, why is there a chef?
I came here to say the same :D
@@radwolf76 Oh no! Ben Sisko is the killer!
@@Claudanne2 Captain Pike was the imposter.
First rifle that shoots through walls I can recall is in an early issue of 2000AD a British Comic, where the rifle had a specific range, and could be nullified by running toward the shooter.
I loved how the Vulcan ship warped in and overshadowed/shielded the Cerritos like the Enterprise E did to the Defiant in First Contact.
_"It was an honorable movement!"_ -- fucking hysterical
6:24 "A clown isn't funny because a clown keeps failing. A clown is funny because a clown keeps trying." -- That's a very insightful line. Love that.
I loved the comment about the targ’s “movement “ being honorable.
The Klingon captain has Gowron eyes throughout the episode, but especially when he dies - a death very similar to Gowron's (duel, stabbed).
I think that's been the most clever episode of StarTrek ever. Man I giggled. Red Alarm? Ha!
I'm glad I'm not the only one that got major Valeris vibes from T'Lyn. Also, that last "Live long and prosper" sounded like a four letter word from T'Lyn.
She said "Live long and prosper... Sir."
The scene with Boimler, Ransom, and the "Wesley" at the end had me tearing up a bit. It was so nice!
Me too!!
This season has shown ransom is actually quite a good commander.
@@andrewstephen2359 Yes, and that he does notice good work from good subordinates (while also recognizing the posers).
I really like that once Boimler stopped being a suck up since returning from the Titan and being more genuine, Ransom recognizes his merit and keeps tabs on him
I loved the pakleds red alarm
IKR
and their lower decks crew.
The perfect joke for those space imbeciles
A Vulcan Mariner and a Klingon Boimler. All Lower Decks crews are the same.
The Andorian Tendi is gonna be a trip
Don't forget the Borg Rutherford
And the Tellarite Jennifer
Have to say that up #8 the Ransome/Boinmler/Wesley moment was as pure Star Trek (TNG in particular) moment as I've seen in a long while.
This is great. Seeing lower decks on other ships and cultures 😂😂
I was half-expecting the Vulcan captain to say something like, "Good luck, daughter", as the doors closed behind T'Lyn. Perhaps that is a season three revelation. Great episode!
I expected him to atleast say something halfway positive toward her...like this transfer shouldn't be viewed as a punishment for her behavior, but he expect her to excel serving in Starfleet due to her reliance to "gut instincts" while same behavior would her limit her opportunities aboard a Vulcan science vessel.
I was also expecting T'Lyn's captain to be her father. It would have made another parallel between the Lower Deckers.
THAT would have been perfect
Tilem had a great line “we are not klingons Tilem” “nor are we borg drones” that was a massive burn by Tilem
Pretty sure it's a date. Sept 1 1982. It was the day space command was established in the US air force, which has now become Space Force. Which in turn one day becomes star fleet.
I could not stop laughing at the Borg Cube lower decks. That was perfect
Ransom also told Riker that Boimler was one of his best at the end of season 1.
And wanted him to go to the Centipede mission
This was a great episode. Lower Decks is the best New Trek in current production.
You can feel the love and respect the creators have for Star Trek,
Oh LD is by FAR my favorite of the new trek. It gives me everything I wanted from continuing trek as it furthers where DS9 and Voyager left off, AND it mocks all the little tropes in trek so even my non trekkie wife enjoys it😂
I feel like the ships names are small jokes too. The klingon ship is called Cheetah, and the Vulcan one Cheval which means “Horse” in French.
I don't remember what the connection is, but I saw somewhere else that they're all California related in some way as well.
"che'tah" means _ruler_ in Klingon.
Plus...a minor point, but they all begin with a 'C', like the Cerritos.
I always hear Doritos when they say their ship name.
Che'tah sounds like cheater or more precisely cheat-ah.
"They're so earnest in their stupidity." I think the universe resonated with that statement.
The Pakleds being the big baddies is something so poignant today...
The model of DS9 that Rutherford is playing with is missing a docking spire, meaning it's still incomplete.
Totally like Quark to intentionally ship them with missing parts.....
Rutherford said to Tendi "let's never complete it" IIRC. It's probably not missing parts, Rutherford just didn't finish assembling the model
Except from "Crisis Point" from season 1, this was my favorite episode. It was glorious. Best moment was the Vulcan "sarcastic" "Live long and prosper.........sir" I had to love so hard. 😂😂😂
Honestly. I may end up rewatching Crisis Point as many times as I’ve watched WOK!!! This last episode is a close second!!!
OMG the "Where am I" moment... I haven't laughed that hard in a while. Legit had to pause the video.
Thank you so much for that.
Theory: T'Lyn is going to be Boimler's Bridge Buddy. There is a need for a Senior Science Officer and she fits the bill.
Season 3 or next episode though
yeah, i really think probably T'Lyn was transfered on the Cerritos and probably became a regular character from episode 10 and onwards
Isn't Tendi more likely to be bridge buddy with T'Lyn with bing promoted to scienece training?
@@carlzerris6566 True, that is a possibility
The Icarus Factor - Episode aired Apr 22, 1989 Commander Riker is challenged by his father to
Anbo-jyutsu.
Two crew members in this episode of lower decks were wearing the fighting outfits from Icarus Fractor as they were heading to battle station. This was around 15-18 minutes into the show.
In that same scene, there's also someone wearing a smoking jacket similar to that worn by Data in Ship in a Bottle.
@@DoctorSquirtle And the Crusher/Troi stretching leotards
One of my favorite episodes of the series
"Live long and prosper... Sir."
My word the SASS from T'lyn! No wonder she was reassigned to Starfleet.
*raises eyebrow*
Sean .... you're just tooo funny. I had noooo idea where you were until the camera pulled back. Oh buddy. Finding you deep in the abyss of Spread Eagle Boims strikes the gong for Male Liberation in all of us. I kick up my heels in salute.
How about all the Cerritos crew members in their various costumes from their R&R activities?
I was just about to mention that. No one had time to change. Like the scene in ST Generations. .
@@cedricwa4628 I guarantee you that if they had the costume budget EVERY Red Alert in TNG and Voyager would have looked like that.
Yeah, did you catch the two women running through the corridors wearing the same outfits Crusher and Troi wore while working out in "The Price"?
@@ryanburton6013 Ok so now I have to watch this again.
Yes, it was the Troi and Crusher aerobic outfits!
This episode has convinced me that I would like Lower Decks better as an anthology with different lower decks crewman from other species.
1st time l'v laughed out loud in a long time, was watching the borg (lower decks) at the end was brill.
As soon as the title flashed up, I thought... no, no they can't... and they totally did. And I died laughing. Perfect two-laugh timing before the credits rolled.
Was pretty much the best episode thus far, for Lower Decks. Had a great laugh all through, especially with the Vulcans. Borg in the end was the cherry.
I hope you'll consider doing ups and downs for Prodigy, Discovery and Picard. :) I love these vids, Sean!
They did for previous seasons so I don't see why they wouldn't
Lower Decks are getting better and better. Again a fantastic episode. The ending with the borg lol
I think this was as close to a perfect ep as we've seen for Lower Decks. Fantastic across the board.
Such, such a good episode. Watched it 3 times in a row. So well done.
Wouldn't be surprised if the T'Lyn becomes a regular next season. Either in the next episode or the next season I think Boimler is going to get promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade, but as he's not a full Lieutenant still has to sleep in the hallway. If that does happen I think Mariner, Tendi and Rutherford will also make Lieutenant Junior Grade and still have to sleep in the hallway.
or even if he gets his own quarters, we would get to see how the relationships would be affected, namely how Mariner would deal with having to call Boimler "Sir."
I'm still unsure why he was demoted back to ensign when he was reassigned from the Titan.
I genuinely do want to see how lower deck dynamics change as friends rank up, and really do hope Boimler does get that Lt. Jr. Rank. He actually deserves it now, and T'Lynn seems like she's got a good balance to match with either Mariner or Boimler while they're working on different decks.
Plus why waste Gabrielle Ruiz she’s awesome
The death if the Klingon captain was clearly a reference to Worf killing Gowron. (Worf Lying on the floor, looking half dead, Gowron cones near for the kill, then suddenly Worf turns around and stabs him. Pretty much the same that happened here,...).
That bit with the Vulcan ship was outstanding. I love the flat comment, "She is completely out of control." Great!
Star Trek V has so many great moments. It's actually not that bad a film and I don't blame Bill Shatner for its shortcomings. It was produced during the writers and teamsters strikes and script issues were never fixed. I love that the script gives each of the members moments to shine. I watch it for its parts, not the sum of its parts.
Might be sticking my neck out here but this has to be the best lower decks episode across both seasons, I’ve never LOL so much - especially when the Borg Cube appeared, priceless
Episode 10. Cetacean Operations is here!!!!!!!!!!! Woohoo
STLD just keeps getting better, and so do Seán's recaps and reviews! Love Trek, love Seán and love TrekCulture!
That "Red Alarm" busted me up and right after that there was another joke (that I don't remember), but I was damn near weeping by then. Also there were so many visual jokes like the bald guy running through the corridor wearing a Victorian neckpiece and dress. It was so random!
Oh it was a massive "2 thumbs up" for the Borg addition. I was looking for anything to move, a light to blink or a Borgified rat to scurry across the deck - but nothing. Perfect.
"Go climb a rock" is (or was) the slogan of the Yosemite Mountaineering School (est. 1969) and was popularly printed on their t-shirts in the 1970s. Also, 90182 is not an existent zip code in California or anywhere in the U.S., however it IS a postal code in Mexico. Maybe send a team down there to investigate. ;)
90182 is listed, per my google-fu, as a Los Angeles zip code.
@@rdfox76 You must have weird google-fu, because not even the USPS recognizes it as a valid ZIP code.
I also got a Mexico address, huh
90701 or 90703 would have been more fitting.
@@ParaspriteHugger Beverly Hills, 90210 that would be more fitting, 90th/Blink 182 idk
T'Lyn reminded me so much of Mariner throughout the episode.
Holy s**t they brought back the James Horner esq hero theme from Crisis Point. Ok so let's start with the basic points. We were bound to get a Lower decks type episode in the vein of the PHENOMENAL episode in TNG's 7th season. Or the 2 in Voyager (The first in the first season with Tuvok and the other with Janeway in season 6). But were we expecting to follow the Klingons and Vulcan lower decks? HELL NO. I find the writers of this series(much like ATLAB writer Dave Filoni) have put threads into each episode. Nothing is wasted. Which is friggen INCREDIBLE. And holy s**t the interconnectivity of this show to all corners of the Trek universe (From the El Capitan climbing scene....complete with the hover boots and Kirk's Go Climb A Rock shirt), to the various outfits the crew was wearing when s**t started going down. To the return of TUC Klingon Blood. To the First Contact shout out("You can see Tyco City, New Berlin.....even Lake Armstrong on a day like this"). I am so excited for the next episode of this show. Btw the bit with the Cadet was SO SWEET.
Best LD yet. Loved the Mariner Vulcan and the Boimler Klingon, along with the Borg one at the end... 😆
I would have sworn I heard Michael Dorns voice in that episode
He wasn't listed in the credits, so you're probably hearing things.
I thought I heard JG Hertzler.
Isn't the whole Cmdr Ransom "Hawaiian" storyline a nod to ST:TNG's "Lower Decks" scene where Ensn. Lavelle tries to ingratiate himself toward Cmdr Riker whom he thinks is Canadian but finds out he's actually from Alaska?
90182 is also a conduit connector. If i was being extremely generous it could refer to borg transfer conduits or transwarp conduits. Unfortunately they missed a trick here as they could have used a stardate that we saw the borg
If we get Cetacean Ops, I want the main cetacean to be a direct descendant of George and Gracie from The Voyage Home.
would make sense, after-all Spock did identify Gracie was pregnant at the time.
@@andrewmurray1550 the hell he did
Or a massiv, old Xindi Aquatic.
Or a reference to Ensign Darwin from Seaquest.
Humpbak whales aren't small enough, so dolphins.
What about Boimler being from a vineyard just like Picard.
I really liked this episode and how the different ships eventually meets up.
So this is retroactively a perfect score
You forgot all the crazy outfits during the red alert
Slainte Mister Ferrick; I love the joy you bring to the channel - Ups and Downs has become my go to TrekCulture every week, it's just good craic. Cetacean Observations makes me so effing happy I can't tell you. I love it when you catch something I missed and vice versa. It's also grand knowing I'm not the only Trek obsessed Irishman out there...lol. Thanks for this and please keep it up. Erin go bragh.
"Boimler, his legs wide!" at 5:10. It haunts me
"Avoid Death and Cower" is the best phrase-interpretation I have ever heard in my life!
Absolutely loved this episode and the ways it ties in with the Pacleds and well...
I am most definitely looking to T'lem joining the Cerritos crew! She could teach a Master Class in Passive Aggressive Comebacks' Blew me away how much she dunked on her crewmates! But one thing I was expecting, at her last line leaving the Captain's office, was for her to say "Live long and prosper, Father." 😎🖖
I love T'Lyn. I hope we see more of her.
I am enjoying the Enterprise references in Star Trek Lower Decks.
This episode immediately became one of my favorite Star Trek episodes and it's probably the best one to expain the differences between humans, Vulcans and Klingons,...and Pakleds and Borg for that matter, to people who aren't familiar with Star Trek.
I love your videos! I would say there were three times Ransom has noticed Boimler's performance: after the Tendi scorpion thing, and then when he thought Boimler was ready for wet work and finally recommending the crewman talk to Boimler :)
this was def my favorite episode to date, lower decks being a pleasant surprise overall
is it just me or is the lower decks the only star trek series which respects canon (aside from the over the top comedic elements (which is part of the show))?
It’s not just you. I thought the same thing. The writers really know and love trek.
This was the smartest most interesting episode. I loved it so much. This season has been truly incredible.
Borg killed me as well.
I just could not handle it anymore xD
Watched this morning. Love this episode.
Borg lower decks was hilarious! I really love that Vulcan ship design, so pleased to see it again. By far my favourite. Great video, thanks guys
13:48 Since LD seems to be taking place post-Voyager (as the Tom Paris episode showed), maybe it actually IS that program? I bet Tom's programs had spread among the Starfleet since he was celebrated in that LD episode as a great holodeck programmer.
Missed the Klingon Towel Guy!
@seanferrick think you missed the sniper rifle that can shoot through walls from deep space nine that Esri used!
The BEST on screen depiction of a Klingon Targ EVER!!! Who's with me on that???
LMFAO, I laughed so hard at the Borg bit that I had to lean on a chair
yes! thank you! I loved the ending with the Borg lower decks and this is the first time I'm hearing someone talking about it!!
My money is on Vulcan will be assigned to the Cerritos. Also the dude the lower decker Klingon killed was someone politically important, has to accept discommendation and also joins the crew.
If Martok is still Chancellor then the Klingon will be fine. Killing the Captain for cowardice and/or betraying the Empire is literally in the Job description for a Klingon First Officer. "I serve the Captain, but I stand for the crew."
@@WeAreTheBentusi Martok might be sympathetic to him, but if it becomes a complex, political thing, his hands might be tied. The only way he can keep the kid alive is to get Worf to pull some strings for a Starfleet commission. Although personally this isn't the direction I'd like to see that character go in.
@@BlackoutCreature could well be the ex captain came from a powerfull house and wants revenge for there houses dishoner so a no name ship like the uss cerritos is the safe place for him, maybe a klingon fedaration exchange like in the TNG but with lower decks
The Vulcan save by warping between the Pakleds and the Cerritos was a pure Star Trek moment and I wish we'd discovered it was intentional - that they detected the Cerritos under fire and accepted it was logical to take hits for her. It's been too long since we've seen 'noble' Vulcans on screen.
Despite what some commenters are saying, 90182 is not an actual zip code, not in Los Angeles or anywhere else in the US. It is, as has been mentioned, an actual postal code in Mexico.
Lower Decks is the best Star Trek show since Voyager. Never would have believed that an animated series could hit exactly the right tone.
By far, this was my favourite episode of Lower Decks!!!
sean oh glorious sean....you do such a magnificent job with these ups and downs...so much so i almost hate to mention it, but i must since it was indeed the most memorable moment for me.......when freeman is hanging out with mariner, freeman is wearing a t-shirt that says 'ritos'...an obvious nod to the 'disco' shirts that people wear for discovery....don't be surprised if they start coming out with 'ritos' shirts, just as soon as they are done with the sean f and charlie x salt and pepper dispensers.... cheers my friend...peace...rocky
Also I LOVED Freeman's top that says 'Ritos' with font and abbreviation a play on Discovery's 'DISCO' shirts that Burnham and Tilly wore whilst jogging on the ship
Has anyone caught the Vulcan -style sick burn so perfectly deadpanned it may have slipped right by you. One Vulcan poses that the anomaly “seemed … strange.” You could hear Ethan Peck say it like three times, maybe Tuvok and Spock and just as your brain is wondering just how many times you heard a Vulcan say that and that it is SO Vulcan BAM! “Of course, it’s strange. It’s… an ‘anomaly’ “. Fourth wall level burn! This bit was so brilliantly written and executed I had to pause to let it all sink in. This so far was my favorite episode and even gave me the impression of something I dare not say, this Star Trek may be the bes-…
Guys!!
901 82, Umeå, Västerbotten, Sweden.. From 'First Contact' *"Borg? Sounds Swedish"*
C'mon now.. Thats gotta be it.
I'm surprised nobody commented on the line about "having to mate with a enemy in prison" - referencing the Klingon/Romulan prison camp from TNG
Ah, I couldn't place the reference... but how would Boimler know about that? Pretty sure Worf wasn't telling anyone about it.
You missed the guy playing the game from The Game in the background when Boimler is talking to Kayshon.
I'm surprised the "Ritos" shirt didn't get a mention! I LOLed @ that.
This was the best episode yet, IMHO.
That was a great episode... Possibly my favourite from the whole of lower decks. In non cartoon trek it could be an excellent 2 parter but compressed as it was it ticked so many boxes for me and showed how the series has developed. Plus... Funny as fuck 😊
This down has nothing to do with the episode. This was a perfect episode!
