@DarkZeroUnit I know, but I would think that LD is capable of fooling us by make us believe that this was just a joke. Hide your trees in a forrest. I'd love to see that as a season plottwist.
I have a theory. What if Freemen willingly transferred to Starbase 80 to get it up and running again as a challenge to herself. and we see that happen at the end of the season Also, 1000% need a Starbase 80 spin-off workplace comedy in the style of Abbot Elementary, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks and Rec, etc.
If we do get a spin-off; it should continue to feature the more obscure and one-off aliens in the series like the Takarans, Q2, coalescent organisms, etc. The place could be a magnet for the universe's strange folks to hang out....or cause havoc.
"Decon gel was the stupidest addition to ST: Enterprise. It was done entirely so that they would be able to sell titillation to teenagers.....Take an up from me." You almost had me for a second there. That was a big up from me. Best part is when Mariner said why it was banned, or no longer used. That's a good retcon to the fact that it was never talked about in the other shows before Enterprise that occurred after Enterprise.

Like every show taking place after Enterprise used transporters. Even if they didn't beam down to wherever they could have used them for decontamination.
One additional note on the video game with the online Romulan warbird on it. It is a take off of the classic video game Space Invaders. Where the Romulan ship is shooting at rows and rows of starfleet ships.
I love that they kept Boimlers facial hair out of the trailer - even the scene where he’s getting out of the wetsuit, in the trailer there is no facial hair and no chest hair. I guess they did not want to spoil it for us 🙂
The ST II maroon monster jacket in the gift shop? It had a knife hole right where a young Picard gotstabbed by nausicaans. The rank also matches. I think some cetacean failed to observe that.
I came here just for the Ups and Downs because I knew immediately that 90% of Starbase 80 was reference gags and member-berries to Enterprise and TOS. Thank you, Sean for connecting the dots. That's why they call you the Ellie Littlechild of Culture channels.
I really hope we get another mention of Starbase 80 before the series ends where instead of it being called out as the worst, it's given just a line or two giving it its' proper due as the place for second chances. It's be a nice tip of the hat to the idea perceptions, like people, can change a little at a time.
I’ve got to agree. I love DS9 and I don’t necessarily dislike the more action-oriented series of recent years, but the “fight, fight, fight” isn’t why I’ve been a Trekkie since I was a little kid in the 70s. Sometimes it seems as if the writers and producers may have forgotten about the exploring, the seeking out, and the boldly going. I’ll always love my planet-of-the-week episodes.
I think it's an unfortunate side effect of having such short seasons in modern TV that the first to be sacrificed are the slower burn, more contemplative storylines.
This episode wasn't setting up a spin-off kind of thing. Not one bit. Nope. Okay. The doctor, engineer and base commander seem fairly well-developed. I'm there for it.
Lol, he was trying to impress Mariner, as usual. The gel helped him not smell the stench of the station, though and to pull the engineer out of the pipe he was stuck in and probably protected him from the bats...
When they entered the Engineering section with reversed gravity, Rutherford and Mariner fell, Boimler was wrapped around the pole like a fireman, but Tendi slid down it in the correct orientation. (Oh, it looks like she's having "fun" too) Assassin training still comes in handy.
This was one of the best back door pilots for a continued animated unerverse. I’d love to see more of Star base 80…. Lower decks is really proving to understand star trek in a very specific unique way. I’m gonna miss lower decks when it’s over.
I flipped when I saw the old 2260s tech here! Tendi flipping with excitement once using the old intercom matched mine. 😅 And then when the anaphasic lifeform is revealed on the screen, the computer interface is of the 2290s. Great little attention to detail.
The fusion reactor in SB80s engineering section is the same fusion reactor that plays a role the the TOS episode "Devil in the Dark". In the episode Scotty puts together "some odds and ends" to keep the reactor in Janus VI running when the Horta takes a main component. He then spends the episode trying to hold his "plumbers nightmare" together until it finally "gives up the ghost"... get it ghost, like anaphasic energy ghost..nvmnd. Anyway they have ten hours to find the component before the reactor goes super critical.
Sean you also missed the Boimler Sideburns, or Sideboims, if you will (you know that’s what he’d nickname them and you cannot change my mind about it).
If instead of "You've got whales?!" Cassia had said, "There be whales here?!" I'd have utterly lost it 😂 Literally my only possible note on an episode without T'Lin (which, yeah, give us back T'Lin!)
This episode really reminded me how much I do love the Enterprise era blue jumpsuits. Honestly, they are probably my second favourite uniform design after the Dominion War greys.
I am not sure but the first shot where we see a bat, it passes with the old Scooby Doo bat sound and I think the two on the “Promenade” walkway look like Velma and possibly Shaggy from Scooby Doo on the walkway right after the bat passes.
Honestly when I heard Stephen Root's character, I immediately couldn't help but imagine that he's some descendant of Bud Gleeful lmao, and I've just given Gravity Falls a proper watch through too
Love the part where they exit the elevator and it says "Arcade" and then goes to where Captain Freeman and Ransom were originally wanting to go in the first place. Lights a candle, rings a bell....ohhhh brilliant.
My understanding is that while T'lyn is effectively core cast for the past two seasons, there are budgetary and contractual limitations on putting her in every episode (and doing things like putting her name in the credits) even if she really should be.
This is one of my favourite episodes! The sinister music over everything had me cackling and I love the Lower Decks energy of this shafted starbase having to trick a stranded ship into helping them with repairs
In the Cetacean Ops segment, That "TNG era medical kit" is actually the base unit for the cube they trapped Moriarty in in the TNG episode Ship in A Bottle. That the cube is missing is kinda worrisome.
@@generalilbis That wasn't the "real" Moriarty, as they mention in the episode. Data was sleeping and dreaming (hence the crow, etc), and he dreamed up that version of the hologram.
Fun Fact. starbase 80's design is taken from FASA. Like.. it's skinnier and longer but the overal tube, docking ring, and upper mushroom is VERY 'if the FASA design was translated across to lower decks.'
A minor item that caught my eye: the exterior lighting on SB80 was a very warm white (reminiscent of older halogen automobile headlamps) while the rest of the fleet (starbases and starships) have cool-white lighting (akin to modern LED headlamps).
Loved all the throwbacks and Easter eggs in this one. A few extra Easter eggs for your Cetacean Observations: The crew being on the Bridge in wetsuits was a callback to the start of “Star Trek Into Darkness”. When they’re talking to Clem at the end of the episode, he’s in what looks a lot like a 3D Printer, which would be a callback to the first season of “Star Trek Picard”, when various 3D Printers were used as Starfleet replicators. Also, while most of the aesthetic in Starbase 80 is from TOS, the console above Clem has a very TOS-movie (TFF and TUC) look to it. When one of the possessed whales flops out of the tank at the end, they go over to a console and start interfacing with some green energy. It looks a lot like when one of the Borg drones in “Q Who?” is doing the same in Engineering. In fact, the graphics on the Cerritos console even change to some very Borg-like graphics, for some reason.
I always end up forgetting what day the new episode comes out then I see the Ups & Downs and get really happy. I watch the episode then the Ups & Downs right after.

I don't often pick up on Cetacean Obs you guys miss but on this occasion there were two. Casperia Prime was the location Doctor Bashir was headed to in Inquisition where Section 31 was first introduced. And Stephen Root was the Klingon captain in the TNG two parter Unification.
That rifle is probably the most sophisticated piece of technology on that station. A nice deep cut for that arcade would have been for them to sneak in a Star Trek: Strategic Operations simulator cabinet in there.
To me the warp drive failing at the beginning, and the long estimate of how long it would take to get places on impulse reminds me of The Paradise Syndrome in TOS. All the times they push Scotty to give the engines more power throughout the series, this is a rare time there was a consequence which made it pretty memorable.
I gotta say, the whole thing with the Captain going on really reminded me quite a bit of some Star Trek Online missions... Especally the ones that involved Drozana Station... Also, on the Romulian game screen is a Mogai. :)

24:40 I love the sight gag of what appears to be a huge pile of TOS red uniforms on the floor, but also look at the TMP uniform, is that not a Picard knife through the back reference...
I'm surprise at you. You miss an obvious certacean observation. When they introduce the engine room with the faulty grav plating, cassia Knox grabs a pole and floats upside down. First thing I thought of was the fireman pole that never got use in enterprise, and in the pilot episode where Travis finds the room where he can sit on the roof.
In Cetacean Operations I would have pointed out the Acamarian restaurant called "Parthas" in reference to the dish that Yuta made for Riker when she cooked for him when the Acamarian delegation was having a summit with The Gatherers. "Parthas a la Yuta." In "The Vengeance Factor"
That smoke filled Hallway with chains hanging from the ceilings feels like it is reference to Drozana Station from Star Trek Online which is also happens to be a TOS era station.
What, no mention of the Doctor's all new in-between/lost era style Medical Tricorder? Loved that. Gimme Gimme! And Sean, my sweet summer child... Live a little. Have a Corn Dog. They're awesome.
