The little scissors that they use to chew the food for them and then drop it in their mouth was my favorite sight gag. The same way baby birds are fed. I absolutely loved that little detail 😂

It's just as Migleemo said when he had that replicated soup in one episodes "this doesn't taste like my mother regurgitating it back into my mouth? Die replicator!" And he then proceeds to destroy it.

I mean technically speaking the dude died because he stabbed Ma'ah in the back after the fighting concluded thus violating the laws of the Klingons and the retributive kill by Ma'ah is all perfetly legal. Mariner and Boimler had no hand in that part of the whole situation and it happened to quickly for them to intervene, so I think theyre in the clear.

In Brazil, Farewell to Farms doesn't translate quite right. It'd be "Adeus às Fazendas", which doesn't rhyme too well with "Adeus às Armas" (the brazilian translation to Farewell to Arms).
    So...
The episode's translator reached to another Hemingway book.
They named the episode after For whom the Bells Toil - in portuguese, Por quem os Sinos Dobram.
The episode was named Por quem os Targs Rosnam/ For Whom the Targs growl.
    It was genius.

It wasn't until this episode that I learned that the doctor comes from the planet "Klowakha". This is a phonetic spelling of a biology (and so Latin) term "cloaca" which is the word for the orifice that birds and other animals use for passing waste. In Ancient Rome the enormous sewer system under the city was called "Cloaca Maxima." "Cloaca" can also be a synonym for "asshole."

I seriously doubt it would happen but with Boimler getting a bit hardcore with fighting and such, I would love for the show to bring back the black alien monster that "hunted" him on the Cerritos in the first season. Could you imagine him coming back and asking Boimler if he would mind doing the hunting ceremony again and Boimler says, "Sure! Let's do this!" and the alien is surprised to find Boimler has turned into a fighter since last time? I could see a strong-friendship growing between the two of them for that reason.

Starfleet General Order One, commonly known as the Prime Directive, is one of the most fundamental principles in the Star Trek universe. It prohibits (only) Starfleet personnel from interfering with the natural development of alien civilizations, particularly those that are pre-warp (i.e., they have not yet developed faster-than-light travel). Non Starfleet personnel are not subject to the Prime Directive.
The core of the Prime Directive is to avoid any action that would alter the course of a society's evolution, as this could have unintended consequences, including the introduction of advanced technology, diseases, or ideologies that could destabilize or harm the society.
The directive is often a source of moral and ethical dilemmas for Starfleet officers, especially when they encounter situations where intervention seems necessary to prevent harm or suffering, such as when a civilization is under threat from natural disasters or hostile forces. Despite its rigid nature, the Prime Directive is considered a guiding principle to maintain the integrity of civilizations' autonomy and to avoid imposing Starfleet's values on other species.
This directive is often referenced in episodes of Star Trek, where the crew must grapple with the decision of whether to follow it or break it for a greater good. Picard is said in the episode "Drumhead" to have broken the Prime Directive 9 times, and not faced consequences.
Boimler and Mariner do not alter Klingon culture, in fact thanks to Boimler's knowledge of the Klingon rules means that their actions are inline with Klingon culture. As they are not altering Klingon society in any way, and rather acting within Klingon rules, they are not violating the Prime Directive.

This episode is my favourite so far this season. It was klingon as hell. I really liked seeing how blood wine was produced by crushing worms instead of grapes like an earth wine. Always thought it was targ blood or another large animal.

I delayed my watch a day because I had to process an UPs & Downs being longer than the episode it was reviewing, but here we are. In the end, it’s been a tough week, and little bits of joy shouldn’t be delayed, but savored. Honor to you and your house!

Tying the jaws to the ship reminded me of Firefly and Serenity. When they tied dead bodies to their ship as camouflage against the Reavers.

One more for cetacian observations, the klingon helmets adorning the background in the committee chamber look like they were lifted straight from the Kelvin timeline Klingons.

21:12 in the episode, listen closely to when Capt. Freeman says “shhh, those two are punks, just let him have his win”. That’s not Dawnn Lewis’ voice, but rather Tawny Newsome’s. Weird AF.

I am not hearing it, Her early line about "being undiplomatic" while funny, also sounded a bit different to my ears. I think she just had a different voice direction for this episode.

Sean, I'm quite surprised about 2 things you didn't touch on
    1) the title card reminded me a bit of Star Wars Tatooine seeing Luke's Uncle's farm
    2) the whole Klowaken species name being a reference to bird anatomy...

yeah, I immediately thought of Insurrection and loved the ironic contrast between what we normally expect of Klingons, and the almost trope-like depiction of idealised rural life (complete with idyllic music) that Star Trek sometimes loves

Bit of Junior Cert English in there as well, nice one Seán.
Lovely the Star Trek Fact Files Klingon knife note too, thought the same thing when it came up. And yes, we are all trekkies, take solace in this franchise wherever it feels right for you when times are tough. Things can get better.

Thank you Sean, for another wonderful episode of Ups and Downs. There's certainly been a lot of downs this week IRL and as someone who takes injustice personally I've been more than a little broken with feeling like we've taken a massive step back away from the future I think most of us crave. Seeing you, and by extension the rest of the TrekCulture crew, share my love of the franchise each week is a big morale booster, especially your shout outs at the end.
Keep up the good work as I know it's bringing joy to a lot of people right now.
