  • In this video I make a Hawaiian quilt using the Poakalani quilt pattern books and videos.
These are the tutorials I followed to learn this technique:

Greetings All ! I'm so thankful for all the positive comments and glad people are liking my Hawaiian quilt ! I had a great time making it. Just to clear the air, in this video I made an off-hand remark that I don't think it snows in Hawaii. Since publishing this video over a year ago, I have received many dozens of messages, comments and emails from people who wanted to let me know that it does in fact snow in Hawaii 😜😂 I brought up the snow because I wanted to include a block that represents some aspect of my home in Pennsylvania, just like the motifs in the Hawaiian blocks that recall aspects of Hawaiian culture. I now live on an island in the pacific with warm weather all year round, so incorporating that snowflake block was my way of paying homage to my home town, that I miss most during winter months. Although there may be snow on mountain peaks, it's not quite the winter wonderland that I remember fondly from my childhood in Pennsylvania, where all the roads were covered and we could expect three or four snow days each year. I really liked the hawaiian blocks in the Poakalani books, and I wanted to include one that I designed myself that conjured something of my hometown. Snowflake was the perfect choice, because it was December and I had just recently moved to my new island home, where I was experiencing a warm island winter for the first time and missing the snowfall in PA more than ever. I now know that a snowflake could represent the snow that falls on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa as well 😜👨🏻

I didn’t know that it snowed in Hawaii either and I am a whole lot older than you. I guess you are never too old to learn something new! Thank you! Take care and stay safe! Happy quilting ❤️!

Aloha Dave and I just wanted to say you are amazing, I love your video and how you made Hawaiian Quilting your own through your fabric choice, we don't always have to be traditional sometimes we need to break those bonds and push that artistic ideas a little farther and my goodness I love that everything you do has a meaning and a story. I've also seen your other video's and wow I especially love the 100 days 100 block kinship Quilt. You rock, and keep those video's coming and Mahalo for sharing Poakalani to your subscribers. Cissy

Hi Dave, good on you for doing this! Would recommend as Cissy says - do not totally cut out your pattern but pin it because of those layers of fabric and prevents shifting of your layers so your pattern doesn’t get distorted. We don’t use tracing pencils and I use a Kai brand scissors or good quality sharp scissors to cut through those layers. Honey, we do have snow in Hawaii! It’s on our upper slopes on Mauna Kea which means white mountain and Haleakala. You need to come back and join Cissy’s class and go the Big Island in the winter to see Mauna kea.

Your snowflake was beautiful! I made a Hawaiian quilt a couple or so years ago. I used 18 in squares of paper folded in the pie shape and free handed the designs. I watched a few YT videos first. I then used a light weight stabilizer on the fabric, folded paper out and traced the design around the template. This way was much easier, I am sure, but probably not the traditional way. I do love your work! Your quilt is quite beautiful and shows the love you put in it!

    Fantastic quilt!
I love handquilting , and for myself using a hoop has never worked / felt right. If basted, I find no need for the hoop. Hand quilting is the best: meditative and beautiful.

Oh I stumbled onto your channel because of the poakalani pattern. I have done 5 of the Hawaiian patterns 20” pillows all hand done but the sewing of the pillow. I used muslin as the base. I love love them. I have to say pinning the pattern definitely worked better for me. Thank you for this video

Rather than hand basting you can use a craft glue that school kids use. Comes in a tube that winds up. Anyway, the glue has never stained, is easily removed and ideal for intricate needle turn applique.

For blocks that are too small, block them. Mark the size the block should be on a pinable surface (a padded board). Wet the block with water or spray starch, thoroughly. Pin into the desired size gently, using glass headed pins, easing where necessary. Press carefully and leave until cool. Hope this helps with future accuracy
