As a HAWAIIAN I have learned over many years > If you cut out a piece of heat and bond with the Hawaiian applique, that can be used to iron down and hold applique instead of glue. Its solf, smooth and holds well without no lift spots. I'm Hawaiian and have been doing this my whole life- 65 years, first by hand, then by machine.. Heat and bond lite> saves time, flustration and the glue mess on fingers. Heat and bond will keep freying down to almost 0 also, so no need for any stablerlizer. Thanks for showing my culters lost art.

Thank you for that excellent tip. I was wondering about using heat and bond for this. My cousin’s daughter is having a baby. And the baby’s grandfather who lived in Hawaii passed away before he knew he was to become a grandpa. So I want to make a Hawaiian inspired baby quilt. Between your tip and Donna’s video, I feel confident about it.

Hi Donna. As a retired teacher, one of the tricks I used to cut out a tracing with multiple layers was to staple the layers together, whether cutting out paper or fabric. Just don’t staple on the cutting line, then remove the staples when done! This keeps the layers from shifting! I really like your tutorials! You are a natural teacher!

    • @mirandahoar8799

I started this project this afternoon and used your "staple the layers together" method while cutting and it was really helpful! Thanks!

Ouch!!! Donna would wind up with a palm full of staples. She enjoys patting and smoothing the fabric, as do I. Not to mention having to pick the things out without fraying the fabric. Maybe good for paper craft, but I wouldn't try it with fabric.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for making this video! My husband and I went to Hawaii a few years ago to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and I stopped into a quilt store there and picked up a kit on how to make a Hawaiian pillow, but I had no idea on how to do the appliqué! Now I do thanks to you!

Hello Donna, Oh My Gosh!!! I have always wanted to make one of these blocks or maybe if i'm brave enough, a quilt. Since i'll probably never make it to Hawaii, I may as well make a really nice travel bag, pillow or quilt. You are a very good teacher 🙂❤

Best appliqué tutorial I have seen. I have used fusible appliqué to add leaves to a quilt using fabrics from the women in my life Eg. An old skirt of my grandmother’s. Now I am not so scared to machine appliqué them on for extra security. THANK YOU!!!!!

As an artist and quilter, I absolutely LOVE Hawaiian Quilts; their bold graphic designs are amazing to me. I have visited quilt shops while in Maui; my husband had to use dynamite to get me out of the shops 😁 I have researched many Hawaiian Quilt designs and their meanings/stories/folklore behind the designs. I've drafted my own designs; time to get busy! Thanks, Donna. Your tutorials ARE inspirational and great teaching vids! Much Aloha & Mahalo to you❣

I prefer to use Heat"N Bond when I applique. It isn't messy like basting glue can be, you don't have to wait for glue to dry, and I find it holds down the cut edges of my applique pieces just as well as the glue does when zigzag stitching all the raw edges. Love all your tutorials Donna !!!!!

Have you ever tried using freezer paper? You can use it as your template, and lightly iron it to the fabric instead of tracing the template. I've used it for really complex appliques when I used to make costumes for my daughter. I highly recommend it. It can be hard to find. It's also known as butcher paper, the white stuff.

Hi Donna, I started some Hawaiian blocks a loooooong time ago. I was actually hand appliqueing them! I would work on them as we did little road trips. Well, I have a whopping 4 done ! 😂 All those inside curves ! and outside points ! were making me a little crazy 😜
I decided to pullout that project bag once again. I'm thinking of mixing in a few machine stitched blocks. Thank You for re inspiring me to get those long ago stored blocks out and into the light once again. 😉
