I am going to try my hand at making a Hawaiian quilt hanging. Have my fabrics, a simple Ulu pattern, needles and threads, and hopefully enough courage to start!
oooh! This! This is what I was looking for. Thank you for your tutorials. The typical quilting patterns are so geometric and though very nice, they lack the organic look and feel wanted. This looks and feels like a real flower. I'm definitely going to try this out.
Thank you, Cissy, for making Hawaiian quilting so approachable. I have admired the quilts for decades. You have made both needle turn and echo quilting methodical.
My great grandma was an amazing applique quilter. I'm trying to learn to fix one of her gorgeous quilts and make my own for future children. This helps a lot! She also only sewed at the end of the night when she was watching television or in between reading, and she, indeed, sewed massive quilts only dedicating seemingly small amounts of time. She passed away when I was little, and I inherited most of her quilts. I look at the stitches and think about how much love she put into every single stitch. ♥️
I am so happy to have found you! You have certainly inspired me to make a Hawaiian quilt. As a quilter, and one who LOVES applique, I have wanted to do it for so long for my daughters and their husbands (of Hawaiian heritage). Thank you, thank you! You are a wonderful teacher!
Kia ora. I had a Cook Is friend when I was young. I was always in awe of their quilts. I purchased a book on HawIian quilting a few years back and was quite daunted by it so never started one. You have inspired me. So I thank you for your easy to follow instructions.
Thoroughly enjoyed your video. It was quite helpful. I have applique’d many of the cushion tops that I will eventually sew together as blocks for a quilt. I have tried to quilt a cushion top, but not with the method you show. I also have a 45-inch top with an applique’s outer border. The applique is very enjoyable and relaxing.
This was a wonderful series of 3 tutorials. Thank you! I have had Hawaiian Applique quilts on my "to-do list" for a few years now. Finally ready to give them a try and I am so glad I found your website and RUclips channel.
Hello, I have suddenly been pulled/called to work on hawaiian quilts. Your three videos found me very well. I have started my first quilt (a plumeria) and am enjoying the process so much (I finally made it to the quilting phase). I love how you said to have Aloha in your heart, I had to do some research and learn what exactly does aloha mean? And I came to find it's a whole lifestyle. It also lead me to Ho-aponopono which has been incredibly good for my state of mind. Thank you for sharing these gifts, they are far reaching.
Oh, you have made quilting a Hawaiian design so interesting. I have got to try it at least once. I do traditional quilting but have always wanted to try this. Please continue with your tutorials.
Make a Hill, place, come with needle down, touch underneath, tiny under stitch, push up and rest -use Hoop and use thimble- takes time- one stitch at a time in beginning and eventually curve- slow in beginning with Poalakana
Thank you so much for these three tutorials! What a blessing your gift of teaching is! I am so glad that you have cultivated this passion for quilting and made your teaching so easy to follow with all of the steps that you gave, and your sweet spirit of aloha. Thank you so much for the gift of the patterns as well as your time. I have always admired Hawaiian quilts and I am thrilled to think that I am going to put this on my list of quilts to do this year. Blessings to you!
I really liked your presentation on how to do hand quilting. I have a couple of friends who are wanting to learn to do hand quilting. I sent them your video because having you there by their side all the time for reference will make their experience more enjoyable. Of course I’m there to help them when they need it but I have learned some tips on how to help them if they should ask me. I’m self taughtI.And I love watching these videos to enhance my own quilting skills. I really like your quilts and I think I might start a Hawaiian quilt myself. Been thinking thinking about itFor a long time. This is motivating thank you very much for posting your video
Thank you for this series. I have a dear cousin who travels to Hawaii for 6 weeks every year. She loves the beautiful scenery and the wonderful people. Right now she is ill and I'd love to make her a Hawaiian pillow for comfort. So much information here and so clearly presented! Again, thank you.
What a wonderful gift in these 3 videos you've given us. and now I want to hand quilt, but I just finished up one. Sigh. Oh well back to stitching so I have another.Thank-you again.
I watched you on @justgetitdonequilts thank you so much for this tutorial! I can't wait to try one. I hope to see more videos in the future. Happy quilting🧵
I just found your videos. WOW what beautiful works of art!!! I love your very calm and soothing voice. You have shown the techniques in a very detailed way making this look very doable. Looking forward to more videos from you. Aloha.
Aloha! Thank you for your videos. I watched them all after I saw you on Karen's Quilt Circle. I loved your interview. I've always wanted to learn Hawaiian quilting and your teaching might just help me do that!. Thank you :)
Thank you for sharing your videos. They are so informative. Every detail is explained. I bought a laser cut design during my last visit to Hawaii and I think I’m ready to tackle the wall hanging.
You are such a good teacher, thank you. I do have a question. When placing design of a light color onto background of a dark color, how do you avoid the background showing "shadowing" through the design?
I love your tutorials, and I’m ready to quilt my first Hawaiian quilt wall hanging, I’m wondering if a hoop is necessary? Or can it be stitched without one? The one I’m working on is 45 x 45.
Your interview on Karen’s Quilting Circle was so inspiring! I felt very motivated and watched your first video right after. Thank you for your videos!! I started the pillow top the next day. I will be starting the hand quilting, as shown in this video, next. Would you be able to post a video of how to turn the finished piece into a pillow? I purchased a 22” x 22” pillow insert for this purpose. Thank you again!
I enjoyed this series very much, thank you, can't wait start on a little quilt, is there a specific type of fabric that is used, that i should look for, or does it matter, specifically used in Hawaiian quilt if you want to be as authentic as possible?
I am trying to find a video that shows how to attach the back part of the pillow & the binding. I am making a Hawaiian quilted pillow to surprise a makua hānai who takes in many hanai on her own dime. She mentioned that she loves the pillows I made in the past, but it's been a while & I don't remember how I attached the back & binding. I kind of do, but since this is for someone else, I want to make sure it's perfect. Can you please direct me to a video that shows how to attach the back & the binding? Mahalo nui loa!!
Hi, I cut out the design and it doesn't look like yours, my cut came out smaller. It looks like yours is bigger, the leaves look bigger? HELP Thank you
For beginners I recommend a leather thimble to start with because you still can feel the needle and get comfortable wearing a thimble. For myself I use my nail, after years of teaching I found I'm more comfortable using the tip of my nail but you need to be careful one slip and the needle could slip under your nail.
Use the hoop for quilting- a thin batting and use assorted needles with you feel comfortable to quilt- when started with the center design- around the edge of circle-

Thank you, Cissy- this helpful thru your videos- knots in between layers and no markers- Thankvyou, thank you❤❤❤😊
Thank you, Cissy, for making Hawaiian quilting so approachable. I have admired the quilts for decades. You have made both needle turn and echo quilting methodical.
Mahalo Susan it's not difficult to learn you just need patience and I love the way it can be very meditative.

Well said. Hawaiian quilts are pure love handed down through generations to remember and tell a story.
Watched all three! Excellent series, thank you!

Thank you very much for this series!!! My first Hawaiian quilt will be made and dedicated in memory of my uncle who used to live in Hawaii.
Every Quilt tells a story. 🙂

Thank you Cissy!! I have really enjoyed this. Am looking forward to seeing more of you and learning so much more...
Start with needle makes a hill, thru 3 layers, tiny with stitch and come up and start again- use thimble
You make this look so easy! Thank you for your calm, happy manner of teaching.
Aloha! Thank you for your videos. I watched them all after I saw you on Karen's Quilt Circle. I loved your interview. I've always wanted to learn Hawaiian quilting and your teaching might just help me do that!. Thank you :)
What do you mean with "always quilt with aloha"? In my very minimal understanding, aloha is "hello" and "goodbye"?
Very pretty, thank you for your help 😊
You are fantastic! Loved these 3 lessons!
Hope you are going to make more videos 😊
Thank you for your expertise. I have all the books, but your videos are the best.
Just bought the designs book from Ben Franklin, cant wait to start aunty!
Thank you for sharing your videos. They are so informative. Every detail is explained. I bought a laser cut design during my last visit to Hawaii and I think I’m ready to tackle the wall hanging.

Very informative. Answered a lot of questions I had. Thank you!
Yay!! you’re back!! I’m working on my Hawaiian quilt “pillow”. Thank you! for posting this
2021 was a very difficult year and I'm slowly getting back to sharing my ohana's traditions. Please share your finished Hawaiian quilt when done.
This is perfect. This is my first quilt and I am not sure of the design for the echo quilting on the focus fabric.
You are such a good teacher, thank you. I do have a question. When placing design of a light color onto background of a dark color, how do you avoid the background showing "shadowing" through the design?
Aloha Monica when sewing a light color to a darker fabric your darker color will sometimes show thru so choosing your colors is very important.
I love your tutorials, and I’m ready to quilt my first Hawaiian quilt wall hanging, I’m wondering if a hoop is necessary? Or can it be stitched without one? The one I’m working on is 45 x 45.
Do you have a video doing the binding around the quilt
thank you i love you

I enjoyed this series very much, thank you, can't wait start on a little quilt, is there a specific type of fabric that is used, that i should look for, or does it matter, specifically used in Hawaiian quilt if you want to be as authentic as possible?
Question: Did you change threads to match the background when you did the echo quilting on the outside of the appliqué? Or was it all blue?
I have question about basting , you say 1/4”
From edge but how long are the stitches and how far apart ??
I am trying to find a video that shows how to attach the back part of the pillow & the binding. I am making a Hawaiian quilted pillow to surprise a makua hānai who takes in many hanai on her own dime. How could I use this process to make coasters? Is that even possible?
Hi, I cut out the design and it doesn't look like yours, my cut came out smaller. It looks like yours is bigger, the leaves look bigger? HELP Thank you
Where do I find the pattern so I may print it?
❤️❤️❤️❤️
👍👏👏👏👏👏👏
i need confidence and time!
How many quilting stiches per inch for a beginner?
6-8 stitches is a great start for beginners.
Is it a single thread use or double?
Always use a single thread on your applique and quilting.
Thank you . I am looking forward to having a go. I live in the UK
What is your thimble?
For beginners I recommend a leather thimble to start with because you still can feel the needle and get comfortable wearing a thimble. For myself I use my nail, after years of teaching I found I'm more comfortable using the tip of my nail but you need to be careful one slip and the needle could slip under your nail.
Thinner batting she said - not thick-
Use the hoop for quilting- a thin batting and use assorted needles with you feel comfortable to quilt- when started with the center design- around the edge of circle-
