What ends up happening, is little autistic boys get shot by the police for having a fit, and schizophrenic men get shot for being paranoid, regardless of how unarmed or non violent they are. I also live in south Minneapolis and I agree that getting rid of the police is a very bad idea. Last summer crime was insanely high. You could hear loud explosions from homemade bombs, gunfire. Cars were being stolen in the middle of day the with dogs or children in the back like it was grand theft auto. It’s easy to say abolish the police until the time comes that you need them. IMO I think they need more funding for proper training and they need to restructure a few things. Civilians on bicycles won’t stop a violent crime. America is in major danger if we continue down a path of trying to get rid of the police.

And like everyone interviewed said ... you dont' have to call the cops for everything, something they have been abusing previously. So yes what they are doing is good for the community. The cops training was to put his knee on peoples neck he was taught this and people tried to deny it. also they would need more funding for police. the police in my city can't even afford tasers. adding social workers to the mix would require a lot of funding. On the other hand the rich suburbs with little crime were overfunded and had to ask my friend to park their extra squad cars near their house. The places that are poor with the most crime don't get nearly enough funding so defunding the police could be a disaster. The way America works with schools and police and public services is that a lot of the funding comes from local taxes mainly property taxes for the local town so rich towns have good services and schools. Cities based on how they are so condensed and have poorer citizens get less funding so they get bad schools and public services. Its the same for funding in extremely rural areas. They have no money from housing so the schools and police force are underfunded as well. Defund the police is not the right approach for poor areas if we want to add social workers. We could easily defund the police in rich neighborhoods with no repercussions, but the money will just go to wealthy households in the form of tax cuts if not administered properly. If they get fearful they will just get private policing instead.

I took criminal justice classes in college, and in one for our final project we had to build a police department for a town given a population and budget. And we had to include EVERYTHING. Every single cost associated. By far and away the most expensive thing is the people. Paying the salaries. This also makes training very expensive because you have to pay the people doing the training and the people being trained. Reformation starts and ends with training. Bottom line. Defunding the police will literally take you further away from your goal. Trust me I am all for reform and I think it’s needed very very badly, but defunding is not the answer. I understand the calls to implement more social programs to help with addiction and domestic violence so that the police don’t have such a heavy burden, and in that way they can be defunded, ONCE THOSE PROGRAMS ARE IN PLACE. It will take years to get them in place. The wheels of government practically turn backwards it’s so slow so in the meantime the best solution is more training. Making better cops. And that costs money.

I was talking with a lot of kids who participated in these protests, sometimes without the knowlege of their parents. One of the kids- we celebrated his 18th birthday during the trip- was tear gassed during one such protest. He told us how, when he got home and took a shower, the tear gas that was stuck in his hair fell down into his eyes.
The experience was exactly as exceuciating as getting tear gassed a second time.
Everybody wants to butt in on the conversation, because it's topical. You hear it on the news.
And full disclosure, _I wasn't there._
I was not at any of these protests and my experience of the movement as a whole was positive. I went to the occupied block! It was great! We found a hat that said "make red hats wearable again!"
    But another thing
    I myself am white
I live in a neighborhood where I do not encounter the police.
And as far as I'm concerned, I actually have little at stake personally regarding the outcome of these events.
    In a way,
    I just _live_ here.

Yes like thats a victim card, i used to avoid saying i am BROWN on internet, my parents are white and black. Cant believe i have to say that i am brown just so that i and you have some credibility you have to add if your black or brown or white, and then some groups come and say -stop racism. I mean like wtf, no white ever came out and said i am white, only black started it. When will they learn to stop talking about race altogether. Makes me brain vomit thinking about the hypocrisy.

She just said she’s a resident and a mourner too as well as a civil rights activist but you just heard “black” because that’s what your bias tells you to hear. And yes black people have a role because they have largely been the primary victims of systemic discrimination and racial injustices in the past 3-400 years in America

Try to talk to the person out of a bad decision the point is cops shouldn't be called for domestic violence or dispute, because they do not know how to handle minor situations with out killing someone.

      @@Juozaps What the data shows
The Post’s database documents fatal police shootings that have happened since Jan. 1, 2015. The Post said its team relies “primarily on news accounts, social media postings and police reports” in addition to its own reporting.
This data does not include “deaths of people in police custody, fatal shootings by off-duty officers or non-shooting deaths.”
The Post’s data shows police fatally shot 13 unarmed Black men in 2019, five more people than Kirk claimed. Also, police fatally shot an unarmed Black woman, Atatiana Jefferson, 28, on Oct. 12 in Fort Worth Texas. But the Post's database covers only shootings. It does not include deaths caused by beating, tasering or vehicles. George Floyd’s died in police custody after a police officer knelt on his neck for several minutes, which would not have been included in the Post’s data set.
