- Reports of civil unrest and extremism have long dominated the news cycle coming out of Portland, and as unprecedented wildfires ravaged the surrounding area, VICE traveled there to spend time with one grassroots organization working to re-establish the BLM narrative through their messaging and actions while also pivoting to support a community on fire.

I live in Portland and this interview is a disservice for Portland. Vice interviewer kept pushing race and political agenda yet the dude only wanted to talk about what he actually does.

Wow, Devin Boss is a very intelligent and well spoken. I have many issues with the BLM movement, but working with Devin, I can see how resolutions to social justice could be achieved.
why not cover the most important part of fire... The wildland firefighters and the communities! There was 15 wildland firefighters killed on the North Complex this summer, that fire I was personally on. Those fires are dangerous for a reason and that is because of governmental restrictions on thinning jobs and prescription burning. Cover things that will actually change lives of the firefighters that go out there every year. What about the people evacuating and how Oregon needed a better plan to get people out of dangerous areas, since they are on the west side they probably never predicted fire, so it was a hectic and not organized as it should have.

@@AKAThatKid They do have one on the North Complex about a Hot Shot crew. Which has been done a million times. They really needed to focus on the thing that kills the wildand firefighters. The governmental regulations on the forest. Even the day to day of a normal wildland firefighter. This is hardly covered in their video, one of their older ones really covers it well, but it was old vice that actually had educational value and something to learn from. Instead they hardly went into the life of a wildland firefighter. But I am glad they dove into it either way, it was cool to see the same areas that I worked on in the video. These hotshots give up everything to being working in this field.

I live in downtown Portland
I worked in NE Portland in 2016-17, in the Pearl District, and when I later found out is was a historically black community it blew my mind because when I was there it was wall to wall white people, what I thought of as an aggressively white neighborhood. The Main Street is all boutiques and upscale restaurants with one activist community center which is where Portlandia used to shoot the feminist bookstore skits, women and women first.
Now imagine someone burns your house down for no reason. Would that be for social justice?

I was at occupy portland in 2011 and since then the method and tone of the more radical protesters has gotten almost competitive it seems. I was there during the 2016 protests in portland. Yes, the guys dressed in black chanting “a.c.a.b. All cops are bastards!” Aka antifa were the only ppl i saw vandalizing property. In fact a black young guy antifa was recorded on multiple surveillance systems damaging windows street signs etc. it rly made me scratch my head that this incarnation of youth culture gone rogue thought themselves so righteous in their indiscriminate vandalizing... no wonder everyone thinks it was that started the fires. i wouldnt be suprised. Portlands political situation is so toxic. Glad to out of there.

I still think they could’ve had a much more enjoyable video if it was about the fires. About the wildland firefighters and at least cover more people being in the fires. The Oregon fires were a huge mess on a logistical point of view on a civilian and fire level. And I would know I am a wildland firefighter based out of Washington.

water tankers are only so effective when fighting fire. There are times where it is so hot that the was spreads out too much and even evaporates on it's way down. Great for creating a fire line when needed though.

There is nothing wrong with the outreach and the protesting itself, but us who live in oregon in more rural areas saw it as a whole group. Seems to me like if these folks are being honest that they are against the violent protesting.. but still are ok with antifa. but antifa is big on starting fires, violence against the police and the vandalism on their own community. So are they with antifa and the actions they have committed, or are they for outreach and making positive changes? This is where people are getting mixed up.. because there's multiple voices talking at the same time but have different goals. So they need to clarify where they stand, otherwise people will continue to not support them. Because they group them with the violent antifa members.
I feel it. I had black, brown, and white friends in portland. I left because of the feeling of being a target for gentrification. I've never felt more safe or welcomed in portland as a teen. Now I only visit high school friends once or twice a year....

You are correct. Race is only a social construct. You can observe the same situations in other parts of the world. In China it's ethnicity, in some African countries it's about tribal affiliations and religion, in the ME it's differences inside the same religion, in India it's caste. All social constructs with one group discriminating against another. In apartheid countries it was and id minority over majority. All based on fiction and myth. Inductive reasoning taken to its illogical conclusion. Ignorance and arrogance merged together wasting lives and obstructing progress. Everyone loses when potential is dismissed. In the end it may be the difference between survival of the species and extinction.
Race is not a social construct. It is something that can be seen physically. We are different and that’s cool . Everybody doesn’t have to look the same . By the way , nationality would be more of a social construct if we want to respect your logic but do you deny being American ( or whatever nationality you are ) ? You can’t really make the difference between a white American and a white Canadian just by looking at them , but it doesn’t give you the right to say that they are the same . Everyone agree on that . That’s why I absolutely hate when people try to say ‘ race is just a social construct ‘ when you can clearly see the the race of someone by looking at him . Moreover people don’t just look different , they also have different cultures .
