It's fascinating how this year has immersed me in French classics, from Hugo to Dumas, and even Mark Twain's Joan of Arc. I'm not entirely sure why I embarked on this literary journey, but here I am, currently finishing Les Misérables. This exploration has also led me to delve into the authors' history.
It's astonishing to think that all 1,800 pages of Les Misérables were written using quill and ink. After watching your video, I learned that J. Herbin ink was likely used during that time. It adds an extra layer of significance for me to know that I'm using ink from a company that supplied ink for some of the world's greatest literary masterpieces.
Once again, my friend, thank you for sharing such an incredible video.

Hello BenJoe, that is a very ambitious reading list. Well done. It’s true about Mr. Hugo; he used it and endorsed it. He may have written that entire manuscript in it. We may have to track that manuscript down. It maybe extant. Thanks so much!

My roommate saw me with my J. Herbin glass pen yesterday and was shocked! She said she used to have a bunch of them and thought they were just pretty decorative things. That, I think, is one of the great things about them. When the tip eventually breaks, they will still look beautiful and can be placed in a window where they can catch the light and continue to inspire.

This was quite fascinating. I was previously unaware of the J. Herbin brand enduring hundreds of years. Based on their quality alone, it is unsurprising that their inks have stood the test of time. I have recently begun my own "Ink Library" due to your influence. I swatch my inks in a very similar manner. Bleu Nuit by J. Herbin opened me up to Blues when I was previously disinterested in the color blue for ink. That Cerulean Blue shirt actually pops wonderfully on-screen and the Blue swirls emblazoned across that dip pen was aesthetically-pleasing in the extreme! Thanks so much for sharing, Hemingway. ✒

Really enjoyed the review, thank you Hemingway. My everyday ink is Herbin’s Gris Nuage, which has supplanted Lamy’s Agate and Montblanc’s Heritage Spider Metamorphosis Webb Grey in my affections. As regards the bottle: lovely, yes; but a bit impractical for some large nibbed pens - as Vemilliontea points out in the comments. I always have an ink miser (from Sailor) sitting next to the bottle so that I don’t have to waste any of the precious liquid.

    Well done HJ...Informative!
Not sure why I've not particularly noticed this before, but your thumb wrapped across the pen and over your index finger is most unusual. However, it does demonstrate the individual nature of writing. 😎
I currently own Perle Noire & Eclat de Saphir (staples), along with Cacao du Bresil & Rouge Grenat. Of those I'm currently using Cacao du Bresil (Prera M), which was not the colour I was expecting at all. Given its name I was looking forward to trying a deep brown ink, but I see little brown at all. Notwithstanding, it seems to be a deep charcoal colour with a hint of brown at best or a lightish black with a hint of blue. Yup, I get those descriptions do not equate to each other, but it's an awkward colour to definitively describe & looks different in certain light. I mostly use fine nibs, but for this ink I purposely chose a medium due to its shading nature.
I do like the blue here and I assume I'll purchase at some point, just I've got so many blues as is, I'd like to use some before another blue makes it's way here!
    Cheers. ✒️✒️✒️

Happy belated birthday! I used my Herbin sealing wax for the first time today when sending out a couple of pen pal letters. The wax seals add quite a bit of class to a letter. I love my J. Herbin inks, but the 30ml bottles can be a bit tricky as the nib does not dip fully into the ink once half the ink is used. Putting the remainder of the ink into sample vials remedies the issue. Fantastic video as always, Hemingway.

    J. Herbin's bottles may be classical but they are rather unpractical. One good thing that can be said for them is that they don't fall over easily. But the neck is very narrow for filling and you quickly get to a too shallow level of ink for pens that need to be dipped, piston and vac. ...And that shelf for the pen. The bottle design was probably made for dip pens. Fountain pens were maybe not even invented at the time?
