Very enjoyable and great playing. Loved it. I always choke in those contests. It's one thing to play in bars, county fairs, your bedroom, or in church. It's a whole different ballgame when you have a panel of JUDGES staring at you.
fast playing doesnt mean its not blues, blues has nothing to do with how something sounds (well it has to do a little) its about the feeling the music gives you.
Few years on the road,...... next satchmo?? I am an 80's rock guitarist trying to incorporate many progenic styles into their roots of blues!!!! Well done young fellow!!!!
+Marc K I know. I just watched Matt hines play and it was blues. This is excellent guitar playing but it's not blues, it sounds Yngvie Malmsteen inspired.
Did he win ?! If not it's a crime to humanity!!! Very articulate, good tone - even though not "classic blues" tone and kinda heavy but good for what he did - modes and everything used, almost flawless timing, good phrasing. WHAT more could you ask ?!
+MikeGaming your comment says it all, this IS NOT a blues competition if this is what it takes to win it, cos this aint blues, the guy is one excellent player ,just isn't really playing the blues . fact. he's just destroying , not advancing or improving blues.
His biggest mistake is using EMG's, not because they sound bad, but all the old blues guys are so close minded that the moment they see them they begin to hear with their eyes. It doesn't sound bad.
2nd fave. Tristano is my 1st. Sollins' is very well put together in fact best of the bunch. He is the best from a technical point of view. But it is shred guitar not blues
His playing style is like a blues rock mix like SRV or something not comparing just saying so no idiot thanks I'm saying he is playing like SRV he is just mixing this like him.
The guy has chops do not get me wrong, and here comes the but. BUT, when you play a genre you kind of stick to it. Especially blues, being the one genre to express emotions. And one musician can hear that from another. I couldn't here it from him. I heard plenty of riffs that he has incorporated from other artists and wanted to be really complicated, which is fine. I just couldn't hear the BLUES from him and some notes were weak like a newer guitarists fingers. Good chops though!
But this is a Blues competition, so at most it should be Blues tinted with Metal, not Metal tinted with Blues. Anyway, he have nice skills. Awesome player.
Just because he has a few fast runs and isn't playing a Fender doesn't mean there's not blues in this. God forbid somebody do something different or combine genres...
There's lots of blues in his playing. just try listening to the entire song. If you fail to hear the great blues tinted stuff that's going on, I feel sorry for you
+Clay Decoursey so what, its not hating to state that this IS NOT blues guitar ,the kid is outstanding, but that's not the point and you know it isn't, man your just in denial.most people seem to think that as blues playing goes ,this sucked, but as a guitarist he was superb.
It sounds like a metal band decided to try out what they think the blues should sound like, and when they failed, they went back to metal (but only for a second) then they decided to try out some reggae.. failed at that too.. "so lets just end the song in a metal fashion so all our metal friends in the audience will cheer for us!" Am I Right!? lol
Yeah, shame on him for being orginal. Blues is a feeling, and there was obviously a lot of feeling in his playing. by 2013 it's about time someone changes it up from the same old licks and vibes that have been used again and again since the 70's.
Not blues in my latin opinion xD, before to see this video, i look active pick ups.. and i say wow blues whit thats pick ups then i heard swepp picking :O
Awesome modern take on the blues, way beyond blues 101. I happen to love it. Congrats!
Was fortunate to see all the finalists live at The Mint - Brandon brought great energy and skill - love the blues/metal mix!
Very cool. Love the tapping. Great performance, Brandon, lots of fun!
Very enjoyable and great playing. Loved it. I always choke in those contests. It's one thing to play in bars, county fairs, your bedroom, or in church. It's a whole different ballgame when you have a panel of JUDGES staring at you.
Thanks man!
i know is not blues as spected but DAMN. I love this guy playing
Agreed! Just posted my entry for the A7X contest....now that's the right competition :)
love it!
So the new blues is Floyd Rose trem, EMG's, satin red tie, and coke bottle glasses? Rad!! Love it!
This guy was amazing
fast playing doesnt mean its not blues, blues has nothing to do with how something sounds (well it has to do a little) its about the feeling the music gives you.
I think he blends some cool blues licks with a nice metal feel. Very different! I'd buy this guys album for sure.
very cool fusion blues.right on.
Brings me back to the days I used to go to Meridian Hookah
Le meilleur shredder de blues, c'est lui !
Few years on the road,...... next satchmo??
I am an 80's rock guitarist trying to incorporate many progenic styles into their roots of blues!!!! Well done young fellow!!!!
Finally someone with some technique and melodic phrasing not just a 12 bar blues
say what you will about the lack of blues, you cant deny this kid has chops and is truly enjoying himself, which is all that really matters anyway
1st place in the murdering the blues competition
That's so true !
Maybe it's just me... But this sounds like metal. Which is really annoying because this is a blues competition...
Metal is just quicker, louder, harder blues though.
Didn't expect this in a blues competition.
I was just wondering he's not a blues master, but dude can shred. I just don't feel it
+Marc K I know. I just watched Matt hines play and it was blues. This is excellent guitar playing but it's not blues, it sounds Yngvie Malmsteen inspired.
Blues rock, most definitely.
Haha I love when he does his "Number One!" thing. Say all you want about genre, tone, he went out and owned what he did.
Fusion my Friends, Rock, classical approach wit a splash of Pentonixzzzzzz
Who let Screech into room?
I rather enjoyed this!
Did he win ?! If not it's a crime to humanity!!! Very articulate, good tone - even though not "classic blues" tone and kinda heavy but good for what he did - modes and everything used, almost flawless timing, good phrasing. WHAT more could you ask ?!
yes
What has the blues come to?
Nice blues bro
Uhh.. this guy is freaking amazing at guitar.
Change the name of the contest to Guitar Master
+MikeGaming your comment says it all, this IS NOT a blues competition if this is what it takes to win it, cos this aint blues, the guy is one excellent player ,just isn't really playing the blues . fact. he's just destroying , not advancing or improving blues.
+Bob “Bob B” Long Watch Matt Hines video, that's some cool playing, and you could see why he won...
Nice
agreed
Is that Joe Bonamassa back there playing rhythm?
what is going on at 1:46
this is blues?
Omar Rodriguez?
I'd kill for this kid in my band.
+Clay Decoursey well hope it's not a blues band !!!
His biggest mistake is using EMG's, not because they sound bad, but all the old blues guys are so close minded that the moment they see them they begin to hear with their eyes. It doesn't sound bad.
WERE'S THE BLUES ??????????????????????????
J. Satriani style, masterpeace
This kid should be part of G3.
2nd fave. Tristano is my 1st. Sollins' is very well put together in fact best of the bunch. He is the best from a technical point of view. But it is shred guitar not blues
how can ibanez and EMG ....? get me real, this is blues competition afterall
Yow!astig....
This is not a blues man. Even not a blues player. But what did i expect with this guitar he has.
There were a few seconds of blues :/
Every year this competition becomes less and less true of what it should be
His playing style is like a blues rock mix like SRV or something not comparing just saying so no idiot thanks I'm saying he is playing like SRV he is just mixing this like him.
Hey that's Joe Bonamassa and his band behind him. Good jam... not traditional but still badass.
Sounded really and technique was awesome. I just don't know if this blues
Whoa there dragon force
interesting genre fusion
I think you are all wrong, the cat is a very good player and its different.
Not traditional blues, but none the less sick shredding. Definitely had some feel behind it.
I feel like if you bring a guitar with active pickups to a blues competition, you should probably be deducted 10 points automatically
Amazing guitarist. As noted, not bluesy; not even modern bluesy...but holy crap, what a good player.
Really a beast of a guitar player but I'm extremely confused as to how anyone would consider this to be Blues...
its steve vai blues
Odd guitar/pickup choice for this kind of music but to each their own
Damn an ibanez with emgs doing blues
But this is a Blues competition, so at most it should be Blues tinted with Metal, not Metal tinted with Blues. Anyway, he have nice skills. Awesome player.
Like the guitarist, not the song or his distortion in the beginning of the song....would have liked to hear something different with the same player.
Yeah but it's still great :D (Sort of reminds me of Satriani actually. :) )
I didn't know Andy Sandburg played guitar
Just because he has a few fast runs and isn't playing a Fender doesn't mean there's not blues in this. God forbid somebody do something different or combine genres...
There's lots of blues in his playing. just try listening to the entire song.
If you fail to hear the great blues tinted stuff that's going on, I feel sorry for you
Reminds me of Andy Timmons
to be fair though, the backing track isn't really all that bluesy
this guy only has a few good blues licks, not sure how he made it that far other than he is a tech. player for sure
Hey! That's metal... He's better than I am.
Blues???? In other planet, maybe....
...atleast play the melody joe wrote!
Great playing and chops, but wrong competition. This is Vai type stuff, not blues.
GC needs new judges! SMDH!!!
not the blues
Very timmons like. All you haters just wish you were half as good as this kid.
+Clay Decoursey so what, its not hating to state that this IS NOT blues guitar ,the kid is outstanding, but that's not the point and you know it isn't, man your just in denial.most people seem to think that as blues playing goes ,this sucked, but as a guitarist he was superb.
+Bob “Bob B” Long this is what you call progressive blues. smh. Argue about something worth your time.
Not one single blue note - just vai-shredding...
he sounds like Steve Vai
Bad horsie
Great Player but this is NOT BLUES. Just Saying.
Looks like Andy sanberg
It sounds like a metal band decided to try out what they think the blues should sound like, and when they failed, they went back to metal (but only for a second) then they decided to try out some reggae.. failed at that too.. "so lets just end the song in a metal fashion so all our metal friends in the audience will cheer for us!" Am I Right!? lol
This is blues the same way Joe Satriani is blues.
Wrong competition
Maybe he should do metal
I think it`s not right to play the blues with EMG`s... But he`s not playing it anyway...
Yeah, shame on him for being orginal. Blues is a feeling, and there was obviously a lot of feeling in his playing. by 2013 it's about time someone changes it up from the same old licks and vibes that have been used again and again since the 70's.
"Its not blues"What this technically is blues...
I mean:bleah!
Not blues in my latin opinion xD, before to see this video, i look active pick ups.. and i say wow blues whit thats pick ups then i heard swepp picking :O
Great guitar player but have to agree with everyone this doesn't really fall under the blues category
I thought this was blues man? Great playing though.
So now that is the blues..? guys you lost the way....
satriani style
That is not blues.....u kidding me
this kid plays awesome but sounds like he is borderline shredding at time....got the neoclassical thing mixed in with some Vai.
