I think it's funny when some think they just started out as a great player! ha ha. You done very well and keep up the good work. Those with the negative comments more than likely can't play anyway.
I like the way Joey played too. It was interesting all the way through. I was in a competition at one of the stores a few years ago. The guy who won the STORE competition was totally boring. He actually stopped playing and dropped his hands by his side before the track ended. I'll never forget it. I walked out of the pace sick. Competitions are so unfair.
Hi Danny.Well said my friend.I'm almost 63 and loved the blues all my life.I started to play guitar 3 or 4 yrs ago.I appreciate these guys because to get the level they are at.Albeit in some cases not top class. They must be admired for getting to a certain technical level that took a lot of hard and dedication.Let 'em play!
D ricardo, let me get your head out from between your legs for a second. Pop( whatever the hell it is), and Rap, come straight from the Blues!!! It's nonsense to put down different genres of music music because you don't understand it!! Look at the history(here-to-fore) of The Blues, and Rock 'n' Roll!! Maybe you're not old enough to have experienced the beginnings of these two very, influential music genres, but without the Blues, Jazz, and Gospel music, you wouldn't have Rap, Pop, or anything else!!! The only native American music comes from the, native American nations!! The rest of us brought our music with us!! Sometimes people today are just as narrow minded as my parents, and grandparents who called the Blues "the Devil's music"! Later, the paranoid US Government issued statements accusing the Blues, and Rock n roll as a Communist Plot!!!! Absurd?! You bet!!! And you just did the same thing, with you attitude towards Rap!!! Do you know who invented Rap?? Blues people!! That's who!!!!! Birdlegg
The following commentary is for YouOriginal. Thank you for elaborating. Now I think I understand where you are coming from. I agree with your analysis of my performance. I am a rocker who loves the Led Zeppelin style of blues which is why I chose that track for my entry. I'm not into traditional blues with it's classic licks and chords. I respect the genre but it doesn't move me. However, with that in mind, let's get back to the what I believe is the real issue here. People like me spend their entire lives doing their best to master their craft and no matter what style of music they choose, there are stand outs and wanna bees. I have no dispute with Joey's talent which I hope was made clear in my original post. My gripe is with Guitar Center's lack of true professionalism and good sense. Every single winner of this so called contest has been far less than I would expect from a nation of 300,000,000 people. The elements of performance are so diverse and I look for all those elements when I watch someone play. Regardless of my approach to the blues, I hope I was successful in communicating those elements. Conviction is a big one I've always focused on from the beginning. Joey shows me nothing in that department. I'm going to stop there because if I break down every element of performance, we'll both be here a lot longer than we want to be. Please understand my motive is not to lift myself up or put someone down. I am just sick of watching mediocrity in every aspect of life from our government to simple things like these contests. Our statement as a species use to be recognition of the most fit. That fibre has been eroded to barely recognizable. So, in closing I will reiterate. Joey needs more experience and years to add skill and delivery to his talent. He could prove to be future great but not at this time. If Guitar Center judges couldn't see this, they aren't worth the chairs they park their useless butts in.
Try playing blues to a jam track. You ain't never gonna get a real feel from that. This certainly is not gut bucket but it has its moments. You clicked on the GC contest link...what did you expect, a miracle. Although do agree with another poster, just listen to J Hiland. He prob. could make the jam track kick ass too.
Very smooth and flawless. Love the black Strat with green pick-guard. No big dramatic interludes but just as well --- especially with only a jam track behind you it's hard to pull off anything too grandiose. I knocked this performance first time I watched but now I am more impressed by the easy mastery.
Hi I`m not a guitar player (but learning ) and Ive seen some of the Greats in my many years. For what my opinion is worth, bud, that was fantastic.I really enjoyed it.
Say what you will about his playing but you can tell from it he has a much better understanding of the genre than most people who enter the competition (gaging from other videos).
Looks like he won this contest so no lying in the title.... Solid fundamentals and we all know that backing track. I enjoyed watching and listening and after getting drunk, losing his job, being put out on the streets by his woman and his dog dying he will get the feeling someday. Congrats on the contest win.
i just got turned on to the king of the blues and watched alot of videos and seen alot of comments on the contest beng rigged i dont see it but i understand why there is alot of debate me being a blues player and blues lover i can see alot of different syles and personalities. Blues is a very raw and emotional syle of music one note can say more than 1000 notes and you have to feel it, live it, and believe it. there alot of great players in the contest that blew me away but its a competition
This is a comment about people who say that someone who can't play better than the person in the video should shut up. When artists present their talents publicly, they are subject to critique. When we pay money to see an artist, we have every right to comment on whether we got our money's worth, regardless of if we can play. The guy in this video put in a lot of time and effort to achieve the level of technical skill that he showed, but questions like whether people would pay money to see or hear him, whether he moves people emotionally, or if he has anything original to offer are valid, and completely within the right of the beholder to decide. We all have freedom of speech.
This is Boogie Long, the actual "King of the Blues" national winner....I dealt with tons of people commenting on my faces and things when that's just a part of my soul, something most of them don't even understand;SOUL...Keep it up and just be humble...Don't feed into these people commenting who have no music career man, their just "youtubers"
Guy plays a soulful intro reminiscent of Freddie King's "Hideaway" and the backing track lays flat with no soul. This guy appears to be a young developing artist devoted to his craft despite what uneducated critics point out. I would love to see him perform in a live setting with an inspiring, breathing band behind him.
This is what blues text book would sound like if it were to enter the competition. He nails every change perfectly and targets notes exceptionally. Unfortunately he never leaves the safety of the rhythm and changes, I don't hear any interesting single note solo lines heaven forbid you might lose your place in the progression if you ventured down that road. I say nothing ventured nothing gained
William Spradley man think about the people Who did the contest too, They must very bad xD This Guy repeats to much and doesnt play with his soul, dont ya think?
That's great just using the open Pentatonic and repeated the riffs on the 12th fret, pretty elementary stuff. Thank goodness Matt Schofield doesn't go for Mickey Mouse contests such as this.
@MegaGuitarboss yeah man i totally agree. they have different judges for every preliminary and final store competition. at least that's how they do it in memphis.
@gunthervinson This is Boogie Long, the actual "King of the Blues" winner...Don't let these "youtubers" with no real music career bring you down,it's a good way to practice humility by not feeding into it.I dealt with comments on my faces and saw some pretty hurtful stuff, but it's all publicity, good or bad.Now someone who didn't know you, does, even if they don't appreciate your style
My guitarist won King of the Blues Portland OR.. What they gave him were some strings and a tuner. He had to pay his own way to next King of the Blues in Seattle, not even a bus ticket. How cheap!
I think he was the right guy to win , he is young plays clean and he is doing riffs that are not out of the realm of most players that go to guitar center ,I think he gives hope to a lot of younger players, sometimes as an older player I like to see a young guy get some props,it makes the world go round
He's got a lot of finess... he is subtle in his confidence... he is a master of tying different positions on the neck into one phrase... cool I like it. But yea, it would have been more of a show if he slid on his back & did the splits like Prince & made faces and jumped up and down... Know what I mean, Jelly Bean?
judges did a great job in st. louis. i took 2nd. the way older guy that took first was awesome. i wouldnt have felt right if i took first just for being a younger guy with a cool hat. the other guys competing just didnt land anything they tried to do. good job joey
Thanks to everyone for the positive words. People like Tenzel1231 is what's wrong with this world. If you don't like the video then by all means, please don't watch - upload your own! I controlled my playing here for the sake of the contest. It's called strategy. I can improv and noodle with the best of them but it takes a whole lot more than that to be "good" in my opinion. The haters can't grasp that concept. To all of those who wonder, that is a 92' customized Squier strat (my first one) plu
Most of us here probably love the blues, so like any other genre, there are different ways to play. I'll admit his playing is a little dry but he CAN play and thus he can work on the feeling aspect of playing. tenzel1231 you remind me of asswipes I've run across from time to time. If you're a really good player, more power to you but your lack of kindness to another musician is very telling towards your character.
A new genre of "Blues" is emerging - let's call it Mechano-Blues = cutting and pasting SRV blues licks together minus the soul and Albert King references.....sorry but this just leaves me disillusioned.Especially about this Blues Karaoke competition ..... just a corporate marketing exercise......we are not fooled. The guy shows promise and nice tone, he needs to dig deeper and suffer a bit probably, and no, I'm not jealous.
A new genre of youtube commenter is emerging... Lets call it can't play themselves so have to degrade others that try = being a bitch on youtube for no other reasons than you are jealous as hell. When you can get to 100,000 views on one of your videos, then come back and we will think about taking your sillyass seriously. Until then, keep up the shit talking, it gives us a good chuckle to see the peons cry.
oh the ever eluding "soul".. if you heard this on the radio with an announcement of a "new song" by a popular xy player, you'd say wow, nice.. don't be that guy, kid's alright
Gunther Vinson As a matter of fact I can play well and do it for a living. I don't need to measure my success by how many people watch me on RUclips either. The simple fact is, if your going to downgrade someones playing, then you better be able to prove you know what your talking about. At this point you have proven you are a bitch that is jealous as hell. Thanks for the laugh, BITCH.

Definitely doesn't take you on any big "ride" per se. I was waiting for him to, sort of, unleash at some point. Seemed very conservative to be a winner, but overall he was clean, had some interesting variations and overall feel. I just wish there was a WOW factor.
he's in the same class as Orieanti, no heart but good technical players. no soul, no life in the guitar playing. same notes over and over with no feeling.
barkbarkbarkbarkable Yeah but Jonny Hiland is an umfair comparison. He is so d good it is unreal This guy has it in my opinion. He knows how to take his time and is confident. I think we'd have to see an entire set to say much about this guy.
@MegaGuitarboss Same here. I lost to a kid who's guitar wasn't even in tune. It's geared to the young and pretty. An old dog like me is just that...an old dog. I just checked out the video of the actual winner of the National competition....a guy named Randy Scott...and a more lackluster performer I have yet to hear. To hear EXACTLY what I played at this years competition, kindly enter this into RUclips's search engine: Hold Up At The Aurora Borealis
So did Hubert Sumlin. A lot of the blues greats didn't even know the scale. They just played. Where this guy fell short was the fact that he wasn't really saying much with what he did know. I know guys who can show you every scale, in every key, but don't bother asking them to write a song because you'll just cringe at what comes out.
Very nice playing. Didn't send chills down my spine tho. Maybe the best strategy would be to have a slow part where you can create a mood and a fast part like where you can get flashy like in the solo to All Your Love by Eric Clapton on the Beano album or, probably, Otis Rush's solo on the original.
@MegaGuitarboss If that's true in your particular store...that's a shame! I've been judging for 4 years now and I think we have it down...know your blues and do your job. You might want to say something to the store mangaer if you truly feel as if your store if flawed. Is the outcome always from the same store? Best of luck next year!
He's great, but I'm kinda not digging the tone he's got going there. It's just a little off somehow. A little flat or something. I can't figure it out. It sounds like he's playing on the neck pickup, yet it doesn't have that typical rich bluesy tone. Gotta spice it up a bit, add a little character.
Exactly. Technically perfect blues playing, but boring as all fuck. This is everything wrong with blues today, not enough innovation in the upper circle.
bro your spot on with your analysis. You got to break out man, be original fuck the rule book make yo own! Imagine SRV playing like this dude. Man, blues would really bite then...
I think it's funny when some think they just started out as a great player! ha ha. You done very well and keep up the good work. Those with the negative comments more than likely can't play anyway.

@MegaGuitarboss If that's true in your particular store...that's a shame! I've been judging for 4 years now and I think we have it down...know your blues and do your job. You might want to say something to the store mangaer if you truly feel as if your store if flawed. Is the outcome always from the same store? Best of luck next year!
y does it say 2016 but published in 2010?

Well, we have a winner. I guess Guitar Center can end the contest for 2010 now :)
White, polite, and up tight!!!
I think a lot of blues players would challenge this. I'll even play blindfolded.
this is 2010 not 2016 it says at beginning
Will they let people who are older win this contest?
not all of us are exiting, gooesbump raising like s r v ,or johny hiland fast etc, but the guy was good, boring like most of us but good.
nice
He's great, but I'm kinda not digging the tone he's got going there. It's just a little off somehow. A little flat or something. I can't figure it out. It sounds like he's playing on the neck pickup, yet it doesn't have that typical rich bluesy tone. Gotta spice it up a bit, add a little character.
I think he was a using a squier that's why it sounded flat but don't get me wrong they're great guitars.
ieu joey katapang ?
kmha damang ?
I can do all of that, but I never play it safe. Wasn't Bart Walker invited?
Very good tone and SRV styling but misses some faster licks and craziness of the blues :)
B.B. King is the king of the blues. Did something change?
Yéééééééé j'adore
Oh yere!
If this is the King of the Blues then the genre is in trouble
Exactly. Technically perfect blues playing, but boring as all fuck. This is everything wrong with blues today, not enough innovation in the upper circle.
hahaha
Aburrido! Malo!
Go show them how you do it then😜
bro your spot on with your analysis. You got to break out man, be original fuck the rule book make yo own! Imagine SRV playing like this dude. Man, blues would really bite then...
