You need to do "in a band" videos with solid state amps too. I always felt plenty of SS amps sound good, but hear complaints about it "not cutting through" in a band setting. I'm just a bedroom guitarist so I can't check for myself
Dying Fetus destroys live, and the guitarist uses a solid state amp.
Solid state amps cut through fine. I think this myth comes from the old affordable Randall and Crate solid state amps that weren't very mid heavy and sometimes got lost between bass guitar, kick drum, and symbols. I remember my old Randall needed a boost pedal and a mid boost but then it was fine.
I am with you, dude. I played a Peavey bandit 2x12 combo for 3 years in a band and just random shows filling in. That was probably late 90s. I loved that amp, I still have one. It's not the original one I owned. I bought another one years later.
Type of speaker makes a huge difference some speakers have better sensitivity
@@IllusionaryFuneralthey used to. Now they use a 5150
Kyle, Just like on the 5150 III EL34 amps, the Blue channel (ch1 OD on Iconic) is a little thicker on the EL34 Iconic. So you’ll have more of a vintage feel on that. But the Red(Ch2) is closer to the same
Great video. THIS is the future. Showing us how gear performs in a live settings is the new norm.
Hi James, is the presence pot the same on the 6L6 and the EL34? Thanks!
@@stiman1 it comes up a bit slower on the EL34 to better match the tone of the EL34 5150 III
@@jamesbrown7468 Hey James, Just curious, what purpose of using solid state components in the preamp?
@@richpryor9650 to allow it to be at this price, and to reduce the problems of feedback and noise. It also saves a lot on maintenance when you have to put new tubes in later on
Love this type of video! Love how you showcased the amps with the band! Edit: I didn't even realize this was on your second channel!
Both sounded great to be honest. Really dig the band dude!
I bought the el34 head and the matching cab and I absolutely adore it!the cabinet sounds really good even with the speakers that come in it!
i would watch and like more of this series “in a metal band”. now that you developed a sweet spot to bring in whatever bands you wish
Now I want some fucking pizza.
Duuuude me too 😂
I love the rehearsal footage.
Human Animal (named after the Biohazard song I guess ?) is really cool and you guys sound super tight in these rehearsal videos (this one but also older ones).
Vocalist sounds really cool.btw.
Great basement practice space as well. This is the dream ;)
I just bought the iconic 6l6 and then a week or so later the el34 comes out, oh well. It’s an awesome amp. Love it.
They aren't bad, But we have 2 of them in the studio sitting right now that no longer work. These 2 heads were taken on the road for some tours and are less than a year old and are not functioning. So they don't seem to be very reliable or road worthy at least
A man of the people 🤘🏻I thought I heard some more low-mids in the EL34 in your other video. Really makes me want to get one because of that!
I've had my 5150 Iconic 6L6 for about three weeks now and I have used it at band practice pretty loud. I use an ISET Booster, and a Wah + Donner Noise Killer into the input. The gain on the booster is jacked and this thing is gain city !!! I also use a 7 band EQ + Donner Delay + a second noise gate. The remaining 3 pedals go into my effects loop. The head goes into a Marshall 1960A cab with G12T-75's and the entire rig is 100% silent. It cuts through the mix at band practice easily. I use the 7band EQ as a lead boost and I just use the green channel only. Killer rig...I'm lovin' it !!!
Eventually, I am going to buy two other speakers to mix with the G12T-75's.....Either Greenbacks or Vintage 30 speakers. Not quite sure yet. Great video Kyle !!! Love your stuff.
Hey Kyle, play in a metalband myself, i have this amp for less than a week with Carvin 4 times 12 inch celestion greenbacks, it rocks like mounth Everest! ♨️🎯♨️
These amps are awesome. They punch way above their weight for the price. One thing I’ve noticed about the haters - they’re almost always talking about these amps in the context of “I heard in a video” or some other indication that they haven’t actually played an Iconic. Funny how that works.
I think they lack a bit compared to the original 5150. And I played them a bit in the music store and know how to dial in "my tone".
So I disagree with them punching above their class. They are reasonably priced, but you get what you pay for kind of. But I guess with more time the amp can easily get a good tone. Not bad amps at all, but the hype, bad as good, is absolutely not justified.
@@PippPrissNice, you’ve made my point. So show me where you can otherwise get an 80-100w high gain tube head for $1k or under that has a built in noise gate, footswitchable 10dB solo boost with adjustable level, built in reverb (although I really don’t like the reverb), an actually clean clean channel, overdrive on the clean channel voiced to sound like the blue channel of the 5150iii (and I can confirm it absolutely does) and 1/4 power scaling for lower volumes. And when you can’t find one, please do come back and explain again how this amp doesn’t punch above its weight.
Again to my point, you “played it for a bit in the store” and didn’t even specify which. The 1x10 combo, not my favorite. The iconic branded speakers in the combos I don’t like either but I get that a price point had to be met. But you didn’t give any actual reasons why you don’t think this amp is good and honestly you haven’t really played it if we’re being honest.
Meanwhile you have a lot of people like myself or Kyle who have gigged this amp and played it for hours and also own many other amps to which to compare the Iconic. Do I love it more than my block letter 5150? No. But that doesn’t mean the Iconic isn’t an awesome amp. It absolutely does the 5150 vibe and it’s not lacking for anything, save maybe a little midrange and I can tell you that is easily EQ’d in with a basic EQ in the effects loop.
Maybe it’s just that we’re so spoiled with gear these days, I don’t know. But I can tell you that when I first started playing in the late 90s/early 2000s I would’ve fucking killed for an amp like this at this price point with the features it has. Yet here you are shitting on it without having actually played it in any meaningful way. Pretty amazing.
@@K707OR30I don’t have a say in the whole discussion as I never played one BUT I completely agree with the first part of your last paragraph. When I started bands in 2000 or 2001 (I was around 17 years old), I had a shitty Marshall combo 30w solid state. I mean don’t get me wrong, it got the job done for a first amp and my dad bought it to encourage me so I will always be thankful for that, but the truth of the matter is that I noticed pretty fast that it wasn’t made for a full band. But I didn’t have a lot of options for having little to no money. It was either that or a bandit 212 (I should’ve have that though tbf. These amps still rips haha). After that, there wasn’t a lof of in-between amps…it was expensive really fast. If I were 18-20 today??? Shit man, there are soooo many great mid priced amps, modelers, etc. It’s great that kids (and adults) can enjoy a multitude of great different amps at different price range.
@@bengirard1984Preach brother! I get a little annoyed when I see people shitting on honestly great amps compared to what we could afford back in the day at the same price and it’s all based on barely “playing” it or even worse, what they think they hear on RUclips or just regurgitating something they’ve read. It’s really the golden age for great sounding gear for not a lot of money and I wish more people understood this embarrassment of riches we have now compared to 20-30 years ago. I don’t want to scream about “privilege” but I mean, to think there’s an amp with these features at $1k, or much less on the used market, and so many people will turn their nose up at it…not sure what else you can call it besides that.
I agree with you about the 1x10 combo not being my favorite, however, I would buy it over the other lunch box heads because it uses a single 6L6 tube instead of EL84s which will get mushy at high volumes and it has two speaker out jacks instead of one, not to mention it costs less then the lunch box heads. I really wish they had just made it an iconic lunch box head instead of a combo.
Now this is how it's done!!!!! Please please do a 15w lunch box amp demo in band rehearsals!
This was a GREAT Vid Kyle, And LOVE your band Dude !!! HARDCORE FOR LIFE ....
Sounding awesome man! You guys remind me of Snapcase
The gang vocals are very well done
Came for the brutal amp, stayed for the immaculate pizza.
Now do one where everyone is playing through a vintage Peavey Rage.
No pedals! Straight in and cranked!
Vocals too!
“Good Gawd!!!” James Brown
Thanks for the vid and input on these’s amps
Bro I was out for a bit but you got me back right away with the fart clap 😂 👏 💩 love it ❤ 0:01
In a scene band setting, would you bother taking something like a quad cortex, splitting the signal on the QC so you can send a DI signal to FOH and another signal to an amp for stage volume? go with an amp and let the sound guy mic it, or just go DI and pray the monitoring is decent?
6l6 sounds way more hardcore 👊🏻
Awesome amps! 🔥🔥🔥
Great video. This is really cool, very down to earth and although not a "proper" comparison per RUclips guitar world standards.... it's a great real world showcase. The differences are very small, but most importantly, both sounded great.
I would say....... single guitar band, use the EL34. Two guitars... have the rhythm on the 6L6 and the lead on the EL34. Or if you're going for a brutal thrash/death metal tone... 6L6 all the way.
Kyle, please make a vlog or something when your "live house" finally have bands gigging
In your opinion why is the EL34 Iconic better sounding than the 6L6 version? Bigger sounding, fuller, smoother, more bass?
Would love to hear reactions after the show
Awesome demo! Hey what tuning do you use for this band?
D Standard!
It's nice to get a break from the same eight riffs on this channel.
mmm 🍕
Can you do a side by side comparison? 6L6 vs El34 on the same amp? Thank you Kyle🤘
I love your channel, but I love Marco’s pizza a little more 😜😆 great video btw 🤘
You should interview James Brown
Amp sounded great, band sounded great.
I would like to know how the iconic 34 compares to the 6534+?
I had to restart the video to make sure I heard that hand fart correctly
This amp came out of nowhere.
Would’ve been the most epic hardcore scene moment to pack a 4x12 on a nissan altima
I can fit 2 mesa os cabs in this bad boy. Did 3 once, but that was a very uncomfortable ride home
@@kylebull2 😂
😊enjoyed
What year is that RG550? I have one the same color from 91.
Hello Kyle, I purchased your Lichtlaerm Prometheus Quad Cortex capture pack on July 6 and to date I have not received anything or any news. am I the only one in this situation ?
Random fact: Within the first 2 minutes of the video I heard your hands clap (right fist to left op en hand) 24 times in your speaking mic.
What amp and cab is the other guitar player using ?
What's the amp on the intro song?
I just used my iconic at band practice I hated it maybe if I stay at it maybe
It's not the amp. Cabs are the biggest factor for sound.
God dammit, really got me wanting one of these amps. Like, legit wanting. Really really dont need it. 😆
Love all the amp reviews.. and I mean this in a roundabout positive way after watching you play guitar I don't feel like I suck as bad
Where’s the bass player?
eye dialling, it's a thing!
Mouth started watering at pizza. It's a little hard to hear what is going on with the mix. I'm assuming this is being recorded on the iPhone? Cymbals are overpowering what is coming through the speakers, so I'm assuming it's related to how the mic is picking up the room.
Kyle did your brain just mush at the start?
I wonder why Fluff said he hates el34s?
He said that. I know he love the el34 50 was his favorite of the 50 watt until the stealth came out.
@@jconner3891 I was wrong.. fluff said he hates el84,s. He mentioned that in the revv g20 reveiw.
@@rankin1289 el84 seems to lack headroom.
No bass player?😢
fart lol
Does the bass player have warrants or sometbing? Lol
Most people don't know how to dial in a tone.
