An explanation for the blue Luma, in case anyone forgets: When Lumas die, they explode and turn into planets and galaxies. That Lumas not suicidal, its ready to be reborn!
Hey Sophie. I am going to start by giving a brief history of this franchise. In 1980 Shigeru Miyamoto at age 29 was working in the warehouse of Nintendo repainting a bunch of arcade cabinets for a game known as RadarScope. Nintendo was interested in trying to solve this dilemma of this game that was not pushing units to arcades in the US so they opened it up to a bunch of people within the company and Miyamoto came up with a narrative story idea based off of Popeye. Because they couldn't necessarily use Popeye Miyamoto created characters that Nintendo would own these being Mr. Video AKA Jumpman(later named Mario) Lady who would later be renamed to Pauline and Donkey Kong. After doing a slight redesign on Jumpman the landlord of the property in New Jersey where they were renting from was demanding his rent, a man by the name of Mario Segale. With the supervision of Gunpei Yokoi they managed to stuff the motherboards of this new game with an ape into the existing guts of the RadarScope cabinets and released it to the American Market in 1981. The following year after explosively growing Nintendo released a sequel known as Donkey Kong jr. As the video game console Market cratered in the US and Canada in 1983 a third game with in the series was released known as Mario Brothers where Mario and his twin brother Luigi were trying to clean out the New York sewers. This is also around the time that another arcade game was released known as Wrecking Crew meanwhile while this is going on in North America Japan is busy with the release of the Home console version of the family computer from Nintendo. Meanwhile Miyamoto has been tasked with creating a game for said console one that is supposed to be the Pinnacle of 8-bit technology which will eventually be released in 1985 with the North American release of the Nintendo Entertainment System. The game in question was Super Mario Brothers there was a sequel released within nine months of the first game hitting the North American markets as well as another game that had been produced by Miyamoto for a niche Japanese art festival run by Fuji Television which would eventually be retooled for the North American release of the Super Mario Brothers franchise sequel and then the third game which was released to critical acclaim as they managed to pack absolutely everything they could into the third game. Fast forward to the year 1991 and Nintendo starts sniffing around for a film adaptation of the Mario Brothers when does end up being produced which doesn't really reflect the nature of the games and the experience was so sour that Nintendo refuse to license their properties out for 30 years. Which brings us to the ramp-up for this film where a lot of die-hard Nintendo fans who had grown up with the voice of Mario being one Charles Martinet since around the year 1995 were concerned with a big-name celebrities such as Pratt being cast. Despite the fact that in early adaptations such as the Super Mario Brothers Super Show Mario himself was less a walking stereotype and more a traditional New York Italian. Something that had been retconned from the first game up to the release of Yoshi's Island in 1995 since then. Some groups are upset at the choice of having Princess Toadstool now known as Princess Peach not be a damsel, something that she wasn't in the North American release of the second game. And then the critics panned the film despite the fact that the target audience of this film is Gamers and those who don't know about Mario which would be why in this film has over a 90% rating from audience reactions. Just off the top of my head they show standard and winged Koopa Troopas, Goombas, Piranha plants, bullet bill, bob-ombs, banzai Bill(Bowser calls it a bomber bill) spinies, the moray eel(from Mario 64), King Boo, King Bobomb, dry bones, sledge Bros, sniffits and shy guys. They refrenced Starfox, Ice Climbers, Duck Hunt, Game and Watch, Donkey Kong, Punch Out, Mario Bros, Wrecking Crew, Smb 1-3, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, New Super Mario Bros, Mario Maker, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart, Super Mario 3D World and Bowser's Fury. The Super Mario Bros Movie is definitely the best video game film adaptation that we’ve gotten so far! I’ve been a Mario fan since I was a kid, and this was a great love letter to the franchise. Really Love this movie, Jack Black nailed it with Bowser and Chris Pratt did really great with Mario imo. And the others also did really amazing. Really Love this Movie:)
I was unsure about the voice casting, that they would sound so different from how they sound in the games. But it didn’t really bother me. I actually thought this movie was great. It was so fun and felt very true to the characters from the games.
This movie, from start to finish, was amazing! The soundtrack is phenomenal and I love the animation so much. Fun fact: The plot was originally based on the Super Mario Adventures Comic, where Peach and Luigi swapped roles.
*Mario Bros. Facts for Sophie Lents* 2:51-3:00 The Koopa Army. They're a category of turtle-like creatures, most of which form the Turtle Tribe or Koopa clan. There are many different types of Koopas, the most common being Koopa Troopas. Most Koopas operate in a hierarchy-based grouping system. 3:16 Many penguins don't just live in the cold but also inhabit tropical areas, as seen in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Most of them do not hurt Mario, though they sometimes act as obstacles or hindrances to his quest. Friendly penguins often speak with Mario, sometimes asking for his help or offering him a service. 4:11 Yes you can collect stars in the games. They make you unstoppable 5:26 That dude is Charles Martinet, the original voice of Mario and Luigi. His character cameo is based off Mario's original design 5:47-5:55 'Spiteful little' Spike is the foreman of the demolition site where Mario and Luigi work in Wrecking Crew. He continuously tries to hinder the brothers' progress 9:52-9:55 That news reporter is Pauline, the damsel-in-distress before Peach that Mario used to save since his debut game 12:23-12:48 Dry Bones are skeletal versions of Koopa Troopas that are mainly found in towers, castles, and deserts. They often collapse when attacked, but they soon revive themselves and become normal once again. However, some methods of attack, such as touching them while in an invincible state, can permanently defeat them (18:07 kinda displayed to us how they're born) 12:53 Shy Guys are common enemies in the Super Mario and Yoshi franchises. They are recognizable by their masks, which they wear due to their shyness. They're Yoshi's most common enemies in his own franchise. They are also common in other Super Mario spinoff games, yet are comparatively rare in the mainline platformers (except for Super Mario Bros. 2, where they function as Wart's main troops). 21:25 Lumas are star creatures that first appear in Super Mario Galaxy. Unlike most Stars, they have a raindrop-like shape and come in many colors, with the most common one being yellow. They are much like Power Stars, but they are more circular and have the ability to talk. The Lumas are each very friendly and assist Mario during his quest. Lumas have the ability to transform, from minor planetoids to entire galaxies, and according to Rosalina, some Lumas can even transform into Power Stars. 22:17-22:42 & 26:05-27:26 Basically Mario Kart in a nutshell. 1) The Tracks -The Rainbow Road (NOT the Centaurworld one) is the last course in every Mario Kart game and the scene where Mario hops from one segment of the road to another directly below, a possible reference to the famous Mario Kart 64 Rainbow Road shortcut. 2) The Karts - Activate a hang glider when above ground -Activate a hovering feature when upside-down 3) The Power-Ups -The banana peel slows down opponents from behind -The Blue Shell, formerly called the Spiny Shell, is an OP power-up from the Mario Kart games. They flawlessly destroy the 1st place racer, except in this case for plot armour reasons 23:49-24:04 The song that's playing in the background is the famous DK Rap from the Donkey Kong games 25:13 Cat Mario is a form of Mario introduced in Super Mario 3D World which he can transform into by using a Super Bell. This suit is not limited to Mario, and can also be used by Luigi, Toad, Princess Peach, Rosalina, Toadette in Super Mario Maker 2, and Bowser 26:26 Bowser's wedding tuxedo originates from the Odyssey games 27:43 That's a Maw-Ray, a moray eel that first appeared in Super Mario 64. They have mega versions that are strong enough to destroy entire clusters of Brick Blocks, and cannot be defeated by any means, not even with the Super Star power-up (Those are just a few)
This was the shocking film of the year so far. I grew up with Mario and was hyped to see it but I never thought it would be this much fun and it is the number box office film domestically and worldwide. I'm just lost for words how this film just broke records just like that. I guess that is what happens when you make movies for the fans: No way home, Top Gun Maverick and now this.
Just like those two movies, nostalgia was a huge factor as Mario has been a popular brand ever since his debut. By the way, nice that you gave Top Gun: Maverick a shout-out (love that movie so much!) because this film was literally the Top Gun: Maverick this year in terms of 2023 box office!
I remember the first time watching that scene where Toad used the frying pan for the first time. I was like, "They almost made a reference to Tangled!" Frying Pan! Get your frying pan here!
Nintendo went so hard to drive home the point how much the Mario Brothers love each other. Literally every scene they have together shows it. They did so to shut up everyone that keep claiming Mario hates Luigi. Literally every argument they could possibly make gets smashed to pieces in this movie. "They come from a broken family." Nope! They come from a big loving family. "Luigi resents Mario and would turn on him in a second." Nope! Even in Bowser’s clutches, he cant stop singing his praises. "But not as kids. No siblings are close as kids!" Nope! They were close as BABIES! "Luigi's a little scaredy cat! You cant rely on him for anything!" Nope. Mario knew otherwise from day one. THAT'S why he pulled Luigi with him to grab the power star.
I adored this movie when I first saw it. I knew just enough about the various games to get just enough of the references, which definitely helped. It hit that classic Pixar-like balance of working as a kids movie without alienating(or nauseating) the grown-up audience. And most importantly, it was exactly the kind of movie I was hoping for from this franchise. They didn't try to reimagine things too much, or "subvert expectations" or any other pretentious stuff. They just made a really fun action-adventure movie within the world of these games. I for one would be delighted if they made a sequel.
16:35 "Okay the song choices for this movie are incredible, It just fits the vibe perfectly!" Um kinda? I mean Mario is an '80s character which is why there are 80s pop songs, but they honestly weren't really necessary.
The manhole cover is melting and about to give way, so he knows he's running out of time, and what does Luigi do? HE LOOKS BACK TO SEE IF MARIO’S RUNNING FOR THE STAR, KNOWING HE'S ABOUT TO DIE!
19:52 Sophie Lents I gotta agree with you, your right he's also my favorite Nintendo Mario character, even in the movie & I have him as my pfp (Profile Picture)
Okay, so about that very last scene: Remember the scene during the travel montage where there's a bunch of little, multicolored dinosaurs running in the background? THOSE are Yoshis.
They're going to need to make Link ultra expressive if they keep him silent and have a character or two who basically act as his voice, like Navi or Zelda, depending on the time period.
I'm so happy that you liked the movie! You should definitely play the games someday - even though it's super old and "doesn't look good" to a lot of people, the very first Super Mario Bros. is still an AMAZING game - it just takes a lot of practice. The newest game, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, is easier to learn, and has way more playable characters to choose from. There are so many options and I hope you get to experience this wonderful game series someday!
The soundtrack is good for the most part, but it could've had a bit more video game songs instead of licensed songs. Also, the usage of I Need a Hero peaked in Shrek 2.
Haha the Superstars were rare in the games (though not as rare as this film suggests), and made you invincible, BUT it wore off quickly. One highlight is if you did find one, you tear through the game as fast as possible and make the most of it. Non-gamers wouldn't know it, but i'm sure the reason Bowser held off using it is once it wears off, it's gone, so you don't want to waste it.
I wish I knew what it's like to watch this film as someone who's not a fan of the series. I'm probably the biggest Mario fan you'll ever meet, so I have no idea what it's like seeing this film as a normal person. 😅
i have a question the biggest criticism of this film is that luigi isn't involved in the later half of the film which kind of makes it feel like false advertising becuase its called the super mario bros what do you think also i wonder if characters could hold solo films in the future
@@kelsey1467 I definitely felt that Luigi deserved a bigger role in the film than just being a damsel for most of it, but ultimately the film was still alot of fun. I suppose that either character has the potential to hold their own in a solo film, but I definitely prefer it when they both have a major role.
@@kelsey1467 I guess that kind of true, but it's not an unusual thing to see a princess kick ass in movies today. In fact, you basically never see damsels in distress in any movies anymore. Same here! This is why I love Sophie's channel because while most reactors reveal what movie reactions are coming next, she keeps the next one as a surprise, which is what makes it exciting!
I Love this movie❤️❤️❤️I thought it was awesome first time watching it I loved that cooperated everything from the games like Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart 😁 the voice cast is top notch Jack Black as Bowser was amazing he practically made the role his own and I did love Chris Pratt as Mario I thought he did a terrific job plus you would never know it was him first time watching it. Plus the visuals are amazing too. Glad you enjoyed Sophie and excited what you do next 😊😁😄😉😉
Jack black did amazing i didn't know it was him till i looked up the cast and sall he played bowser.
I always like to see the opinions of those who've never played the games. The references get lost on you, yeah, but you were still able to enjoy the film because it's that good. It's a solid 9/10 for sure.
Seth Rogen's Donkey Kong and Fred Armisen's Cranky Kong we're the only ones that didn't seem to work imo.
This movie, from start to finish, was amazing! The soundtrack is phenomenal and I love the animation so much.
Fun fact: The plot was originally based on the Super Mario Adventures Comic, where Peach and Luigi swapped roles.
I think that's just a rumour, mate.
I love how you react to movies, it's funny
more than others who react
*Mario Bros. Facts for Sophie Lents*
2:51-3:00
The Koopa Army. They're a category of turtle-like creatures, most of which form the Turtle Tribe or Koopa clan. There are many different types of Koopas, the most common being Koopa Troopas. Most Koopas operate in a hierarchy-based grouping system.
3:16
Many penguins don't just live in the cold but also inhabit tropical areas, as seen in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Most of them do not hurt Mario, though they sometimes act as obstacles or hindrances to his quest. Friendly penguins often speak with Mario, sometimes asking for his help or offering him a service.
4:11
Yes you can collect stars in the games. They make you unstoppable
5:26
That dude is Charles Martinet, the original voice of Mario and Luigi. His character cameo is based off Mario's original design
5:47-5:55
'Spiteful little' Spike is the foreman of the demolition site where Mario and Luigi work in Wrecking Crew. He continuously tries to hinder the brothers' progress
9:52-9:55
That news reporter is Pauline, the damsel-in-distress before Peach that Mario used to save since his debut game
12:23-12:48
Dry Bones are skeletal versions of Koopa Troopas that are mainly found in towers, castles, and deserts. They often collapse when attacked, but they soon revive themselves and become normal once again. However, some methods of attack, such as touching them while in an invincible state, can permanently defeat them (18:07 kinda displayed to us how they're born)
12:53
Shy Guys are common enemies in the Super Mario and Yoshi franchises.
21:25
Lumas are star creatures that first appear in Super Mario Galaxy.
22:17-22:42 & 26:05-27:26
Basically Mario Kart in a nutshell.
1) The Tracks
-The Rainbow Road (NOT the Centaurworld one) is the last course in every Mario Kart game and the scene where Mario hops from one segment of the road to another directly below, a possible reference to the famous Mario Kart 64 Rainbow Road shortcut.
2) The Karts
- Activate a hang glider when above ground
-Activate a hovering feature when upside-down
3) The Power-Ups
-The banana peel slows down opponents from behind
-The Blue Shell, formerly called the Spiny Shell, is an OP power-up from the Mario Kart games. They flawlessly destroy the 1st place racer, except in this case for plot armour reasons
23:49-24:04
The song that's playing in the background is the famous DK Rap from the Donkey Kong games
25:13
Cat Mario is a form of Mario introduced in Super Mario 3D World which he can transform into by using a Super Bell. This suit is not limited to Mario, and can also be used by Luigi, Toad, Princess Peach, Rosalina, Toadette in Super Mario Maker 2, and Bowser
26:26
Bowser's wedding tuxedo originates from the Odyssey games
27:43
That's a Maw-Ray, a moray eel that first appeared in Super Mario 64. They have mega versions that are strong enough to destroy entire clusters of Brick Blocks, and cannot be defeated by any means, not even with the Super Star power-up
(Those are just a few)
Nice fact list!
@@liamphibia why thank you
This was the shocking film of the year so far.
❤
Luigi is a scaredy-cat, but when push comes to shove, he’s damn loyal.
Haven't I seen you in the other comment sections of other Mario Movie Reactions?

"That would be a cool ride in Disney World or something."
Sophie, may I present to you Universal Studios Super Nintendo World!
Mario’s dad: “everyone loves mushrooms right?”
Sophie: *”no”*
I adored this movie when I first saw it.
The Mom was supportive the entire time. Their Dad was the iffy one.
The power star makes you invincible for a while
You don't see the title card until the end, to signify the game has officially started.
I need a Sophie's full reaction tu Peaches, I need it 😂❤
16:35
"Okay the song choices for this movie are incredible, It just fits the vibe perfectly!"
Um kinda? I mean Mario is an '80s character which is why there are 80s pop songs, but they honestly weren't really necessary.
“Yeah? Well… YOUR DAD’S RIGHT!”
Thanks for being SO honest ando Open. I really enjoy your comments 🥰
Thank you!
You’ll see how easily Luigi gets scared by someone or something.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is one of the best movies I have seen in a while.
"What's the point of having such a road?" It makes for a great video game level.
5:25 Too much-a? It’s a perfect! Wha hoo!!
That was Charles Martinet.
"Okay, I'm gonna trust ya!"
5:09 at least Sophie acknowledges that, than every other reactor I've seen, for this movie
I could watch an entire video of Sophie vibing to classic rock music
Fun Fact: The guy at 5:25 was voiced by the OG Mario himself, Charles Martinet. He also played Mario and Luigi's father
4:14 This is a remake of the song from the old TV show, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, which mixed animation and live action.
I love this movie so much, it's all of the references of every Mario game, references towards other Nintendo games and every sounds and musica que.
This was such a fun reaction. It was like watching a movie with my mom. 😊
Jack black was such a amazing as bowser
8:11 "Is this like John Wick's dog?"
Of course not. This dog is moving.
Holding out for a Hero is originally from 1984's Footloose
Just what I wanted to see, someone that knows pretty much nothing about the Mario universe reacting to this movie :D
You’re welcome 😂
A underrated gem of a movie that I recommend is Fight club, but we're not supposed to talk about it
Underrated? Fight Club?? Underrated??? 🤣
@@gwivongalois6169 that's the joke, like when you say a small local band and then say a huge well known band like no one has ever heard of them

The manhole cover is melting and about to give way, so he knows he's running out of time, and what does Luigi do?
HE LOOKS BACK TO SEE IF MARIO’S RUNNING FOR THE STAR, KNOWING HE'S ABOUT TO DIE!
Your setup looks better since your Ice Age 5 movie. Great job!
I loved the songtrack as well 😍😍 was vibing so hard to take on me 😂
33:01 To be fair their mom was the only one being supportive
This truly shows that if you don't know anything about Super Mario you can still enjoy this movie. 🥰🤓
"Never played the game." Super Mario is more than one game, it's a whole franchise. Mario Kart is the classic.
Morticia Addams watches accidentally a movie with colours. Interesting reaction.
19:52 Sophie Lents I gotta agree with you, your right he's also my favorite Nintendo Mario character, even in the movie & I have him as my pfp (Profile Picture)
Mario lore, Vilain be horny, Princess be pretty, Hero saves kidnapped princess from horny Vilain by stomping enemies and eating shrooms. End of lore..
And became a "super star".
Lol I just arrived home after watching it in the theater 😂🤯 what are the odds 😂❤
They start with action scenes because they need to glab that attention, need to GLAB IT
Okay, so about that very last scene: Remember the scene during the travel montage where there's a bunch of little, multicolored dinosaurs running in the background? THOSE are Yoshis.
It's actually really rare to know someone who never played any Mario game or at least watched someone play a Mario game...
Yeah…. But we exist
Who was a Donkey Kong fan as a kid cause I was and also who was a Mario and Luigi fan while playing the game on Nintendo
12:13: Luigi is also lucky that he didn't burn alive in the lava.
The reaction gave me LIIIIFEEE!!! 😂😂😂🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Please make a video of you playing Super Mario Bros and Mario Kart!
We need a Zelda movie next.
They're going to need to make Link ultra expressive if they keep him silent and have a character or two who basically act as his voice, like Navi or Zelda, depending on the time period.
Jack black aying the piano as bowser is hilarious
Tbh Sophie, you look like one of my favorite RUclipsrs
I’m so glad you watched this
This is my favorite movie
In Super Mario 64, 64 DS, Galaxy, and Galaxy 2, you collect Power Stars. In Super Mario Sunshine, you get Shine Sprites
I'm surprised you never talked about how incredible the soundtrack was. (The ACTUAL soundtrack not the pop songs)
specially here in brazil. they nailed the voice of mario here.
I was hoping for Yoshi the whole movie so whew seen I saw the egg I was like "oh come on!".
The soundtrack is good for the most part, but it could've had a bit more video game songs instead of licensed songs. Also, the usage of I Need a Hero peaked in Shrek 2.
there was more original mario music than licenced music bro, only 4 songs are licenced ones in all the movie, the rest are from mario
Nah, the original version of I Need a Hero is way better then the one Shrek 2 used.
Thanks for the video Sophie! :)
I love you. I am the first person who liked. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
This sounds...kinda...sus

8:10 Well... I can say for certain it is not John Wick's dog
movie of the year! super mario bros were great :))
This movie was a love letter to me and others in the Nintendo generation......
They didn't cause the big leak in Brooklyn 😂 Just flooded the customer's apartment.
Now i wanna watch you play the first Mario Bros, and then games onwards
Koopa: what if she says no?
(Becomes immortal)
Also, let’s be real, we all know what Jack Black was saying when he was singing Peaches…..
@@4dojo also i liked wasn't the damsel and distress for once its way refreshing
@@kelsey1467 I guess that kind of true, but it's not an unusual thing to see a princess kick ass in movies today. In fact, you basically never see damsels in distress in any movies anymore. The trope offends too many people now, and offending people gets movies boycotted, so no movie has a princess getting rescued anymore.
@@4dojo also an observation i had is i don't think we get to spend as much time exploring parts of the world because this a movie if/when we get sequel i'd like them to explore parts we didn't get to explore i just wonder if in a tv show you get to explore more because you have time
This is the first reaction video of yours I've watched 😂 your reactions are legit af
Unrelated but does anyone know the background song she used at 4:29
Finally! I’ve been waiting for this reaction! I love this movie! 😄
