    Hey Trevor, really cool video! Just out of curiosity, I’m wondering why you have chosen C major as your basis instead of F major given that you can choose Bb as a fretted note, is it just a choice you make or do you see it as serving the functionality better? I’m working with a student on this and we just watched your video, really great stuff!

      I think it’s due to Math Rock , which mainly uses the 4th note of a scale as it’s home chord

  • @jat5am
    @jat5am 3 года назад

    I wanna start learning alternate tunings and I love math/midwest sound. However, there're not that much materials on FACGCE vs DADGAD. Is it crucial to pick the first over the second one to get similar possibilities moodwise?

    • @trevorjohnson935
      @trevorjohnson935 2 года назад +1

      Idk much about theory, but I’ve played in dadgad for years and it’s a very different sound than math rock. It is rooted pretty deep in the dorian medieval/appalachian blues sound. Idk if you could make it sound math. But anything is possible

  • @mellow-mike

    Is changing tuning purely to make certain chords and licks easier to play or are some things just practically impossible in certain tunings?

    • @abcrx32j
      @abcrx32j 6 лет назад +21

      Both, actually. Some chords are impossible to play on standard tuning, specially those that include open strings, it also gives you access to different notes and chords when using natural harmonics. Besides, it allows you to play some chords with minimal fingering so you are free to play extra notes.

    If we're in C major, does chords or scales based of another key all sound bad or is this like a rule of thumb kinda thing?

    • @skramzfather
      @skramzfather 6 лет назад

      DeusEx3 in my experience a lot of deviations from C major sound pretty bad. It’s best to stay in that scale when writing in FACGCE

    • @cameronhusband2978
      @cameronhusband2978 4 года назад

      its just a little more difficult to use other keys in the tuning, but you can use specific modulations to certain closeby keys that can sound good depending on how ypu use them

      Lower or higher compared to what? F is higher than E in this case, but the tuning also functions differently from standard tuning in E. Maybe include why you are asking next time, context matters.
