As someone who's used to playing more blues-based rock music; math rock and emo chord structures or riffs always seemed so foreign but every video I watch of yours unlocks new things for me. You help me a lot to make me play new styles and genres, and I greatly appreciate your videos!
Woot! Glad I'm able to help you learn the style. It's definitely way different than the Blues, but once you've got it, the style kinda makes sense / should become easier. Thanks for sharing the kind words!
Same hear, the weird thing is I play blues but don’t even listen to it, I listen to Midwest emo stuff so I’m finally trying to learn it and it’s so foreign but this video was a help especially since it’s in standard tuning - I’m also trying to get the hang of facgce
that rhytmin aproach at the is precious. things that most of us dont think too often when creating stuff
Glad it you agree! It seems counterintuitive in math rock, but rhythm seems to get overlooked. You can make something so cool with just rhythm
Love getting a riff inspiration like these and then just noodling around. Great vid
Thank you! As a guitar player who put it down and recently found it again. I never thought I'd be able to even fathom learning math rock techniques so quickly
Your title drew me in, expertly written. This is exactly the kind of stuff I need right now. Added to my watch later but I already have a feeling this is going to be a great video
I fell out of playing guitar a few years ago but seeing your channel and getting into more math rock has inspired me to get on it again. Thanks man your channel is great!
These videos are amazing. For a beginner like me it makes getting the sound I’m looking for easier when writing. I have an idea for another video. How to program math rock drums after you write a riff like this. Like a beginners guide to adding drums for the home recording math rock emo guitar player.
Yep I agree with this. These are absolutely amazing videos for the beginner, but especially during the era of streaming and covid times, it makes more sense to record as a solo artist than in a band (unless money isn’t a concern).
agreed! i've been searching forever on how to program drums since covid and all, haven't found anything that i understand (maybe i'm just dumb haha). especially for non-drummers who are forced to become one (because covid) like me, guide videos would be really helpful. thanks!
i so agree!! please math rock drum programming, would be amazing!!
maybe searching for r&b/hip hop drums first would be useful, since there is probably more material, from there you can go wherever you want to!
Man, ive stumbled upon your channel after getting back into guitar and didn't realize I wasn't subbed! Your videos are super easy to follow along with, and you speak clearly. 10/10!
Statement about the rhythm is very true! So glad you pointed it out thanks!!
Your videos have great pacing! Thanks homie, very educational.
clear explanation without being overly complex with chord choices and voicing
bless
How does this only have 7.6k likes? This is criminally underrated. Great pointers my guy
Awesome Info man, I am getting into more math technique because of your videos thanks!
Dude u are a fantastic teacher.. thank you and God bless you sir
i love how after that briefin' you go straight to the point, great channel!
you have my like and sub.
Trevor you’re the man
Love your videos
Thanks
I would watch one of these every week!
New here, but wow your videos are amazing. Keep it coming! This inspires me to learn more :)
Wow this idea is surprisingly powerful for the kind of music I like. Great stuff. I can't believe I didn't think to try it before. 🔥🔥🤘🤘
This is very informative. Thanks !
you’re truly a gift trevor, thanks again!
My pleasure! Appreciated!
Amazing, thx for the video.
Ok that's it. I'm gonna become a patreon!
Hey Trevor, I've been watching for some time and I seriously gotta say, I've improved more in a year than I have in the last 4 ever since I found your videos. I feel so much more musically competent, and my ear is naturally starting to recognize pitches and ideas that I hear in songs. I really want to say thanks, and I do plan on subscribing to your patreon as soon as I am able to :D
P.S: I was wondering if you had any interest on doing a video on finding chords non-diatonically? I can easily write using notes from the major scale, but when I see people incorporate chords like a flat vi and flat V it makes me wonder about the logic behind finding such beautiful sounds.
Hey Ayden, thanks so much for sharing the kind words! I'm really glad to hear that I've helped in that kind of way and am honoured if you should choose to support on Patreon! Yeah, I can definitely do a video on chromatic harmony, it's something I teach a fair bit in private lessons, so it would be pretty easy to put something together. Thanks for the suggestion!
Dude you make fantastic videos
great stuff, thanks!
Good lesson 👍
Great vid! I'm excited to tinker with these ideas *sprints to sub button*
amazing workt, thank you =)
Apparently I know music, because I telegraphed you going into something like FCP.
I feel quite proud now.
Holy shit... math rock really is emo jazz 🖤
Love your videos! They've been a super helpful resource for me.
Also, 04:10 we Fall of Troy now
AMAZING
These videos really help me have new guitar and music ideas I hope you don’t mind if I steal a few of these licks and tweak them a bit into my own
More videos like this please
thank u so much
Very nice tutorial
Thank you.
I really enjoyed this lessons. Where can I get more ideals like this?
Spectacular videos
Thanks 🙏
Thank u!
The first two sliding into each other are in Poliphias goose intro lick.
you're rad dude
FCPREMIX
DAMN! guess i gotta pick up my guitar now
Great stuff! Anyone else notice the first riff is Alex G's Mary haha
that last one - st paul missionary baptist church blues by la dispute :)
cool, will have to check that out!
thank you
You're welcome
3:00 Mary - Alex G
Trevor I love you
As usual, very good content!
I have a question for you. Math/emo/post rock does not have a particularly cumbersome musical history unlike most other rock sub-genres.
I guess this is also the reason why there seems to be no improvisation-based approach to this genre, do you think it will come with time or it will just remain a more compositional-based genre? I've tried to incorporate in my improv some math rock ideas but it still hard (for me) to achieve a natural math-ish sound when doing so.
I'd love to hear your ideas on this.
Storm and Stress was a free-improvisational Math Rock band featuring Ian Williams of Don Caballero, that might be good to check out.
@@noesunyoutuber7680 Didn't know about them, thanks!
I, too, listen to tricot
Hey, Trevor! What program do you use to record the guitar and microphone?
Hello, could you please tell how to deal with that noise when I slide my finger along the strings, it looks like you don't have that at all
ey that camera is great
Well i suck in normal picking because i play fingerstlye alot then i got good in hybrid picking and tapping i just suck a palm muting like some part of goat polyphia its really hard for me to palm mute
Very simple and effective video! But I’m afraid the tabs at 5:09 are a bit different from what you’re playing.
Frets are right just the order is wrong. Play 3rd -> 1st -> 2nd string instead of 3rd -> 2nd -> 1st string.
Thank you 💙🤖💙🤖💙🤖💙🤖💙🤖💙
Tortoise, or don cab? Or?? I know i have it in back of my brain but cant quite put my finger on it..
Bmin7 to CM7 sounds like safe in your skin
Hey aren't the tabs wrong at 5:13? If you look at his hands he plays 12 12 10 12/9 not 12 10 12 12/9 it's like that for all parts of that tab the middle is switched.
One of those I recognized from F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X.
I caught that too! Thought about the bassline for the original FCP track "Fcpsitsgepgepgep" off Fall of Troy's Self-Titled album.
4:20
Reminds me of FCPREMIX
Or FCPSITGEPGEPGEP
Am I just really tired or does the tab at around 5:15 not match what you're playing?
The tab says you hit the strings in the order D -> A -> E -> D, but it looks like you're playing it D->E->A->D. Both sound cool, just an fyi
saucey
Do you have a compressor on your vocal track? you get quiet while speaking and i miss some syllables. If you don't have one on please consider this as it will raise your lower volume words and plateau the higher volumes. other that awesome vid! thank you!
Then you get annoying breaths. Spoken word audio production isn't as easy as slapping a compressor on
@@jc5512 RUclips buddy, an EQ would fix that easy, free plugin if you’re using a daw all of come with one just about, take you ten minutes to find a video and yes a compressor would most likely do just fine depending on the mic you are using
@@dumbnutz5145 lol I know what an eq is
@@jc5512 did i say you didnt? or did you assume?
@@dumbnutz5145 what is happening here
what happen to 5:09 ....tab is wrong or what
Pog great video
Dare I say poggers?
May I name Trevor our pogchamp?
@@Dotmw any truers in chat

first lick is Amber by 311 prove me wrong
Anyone else just tune into these to hear more midwest emo sounds since no one is making this music anymore? I'm a rudimentary chord player at best, so I tell myself I'm tuning in to learn how to do this stuff, but the truth is, I'm like a mwemo junkie that just needs a little taste. Even a 10 second riff to keep me from going into withdrawls.
What tuning are you in
standard!
Mmm thank you
What tuning?
Standard!
@@TrevorWongMusic your videos are awesome btw
