  • In this video I do a deep dive, exploring the harmony, rhythm, and form of the intro riffs to 'Never Meant' by American Football!
    If you've never heard of American Football before, they are one of the most influential midwest emo bands of all time. Their music blends elements of minimalism, progressive rock, jazz, and emo to create a sound that is very unique. Support them, read about them, and check out their music here:

      Trevor Wong fwiw I really appreciate it. Lots of emo musicians don’t actually understand the theory behind what they’re doing and why, and since my theory is better than my ear, this really helps me grasp a lot more what’s going on without sitting down to a song myself.

      I've learned more music theory exploring this genre than any other. I also went years without practicing scales patterns and I don't know why because now I know 4 scale patterns each for minor and major that I can take basically anywhere on the fretboard. This has also led to me being able to play in any key I want. Which has also led to me being able to figure out the notes of any key by playing the scale pattern starting from the root note if said key. Which has also enabled me to sit down and figure out every note in every key, along with every chord in every key (with the help of the major/minor formula of course. If you know ya know) without using the internet. It's life changing to say the least. With 5 minutes a pencil and some paper I can write songs in any key I want. Only playing metal wouldn't have gotten me to that point. It really is life changing to understand that kinda stuff

    • @TrevorWongMusic
      @TrevorWongMusic  4 года назад +37

      Hey Paul, I think the best place to start is to start learning scales. Try and experiment with writing stuff with the scales though, rather than just playing the patterns up and down. It's all about outlining the note choices you want to use, while experimenting and crafting from within that (i.e, doing your best to write riffs / create chords, etc). Also focus on learning a lot of chords and how to use them. If you need a primer on some basic theory language, check out this video here ruclips.net/video/mspx4rn_qeg/видео.html. Also, I've got tons of videos on chord voicings which you can use to plug in the information that I talk about in that previous video.

      In this case, it's more just a matter of touch. I'm not really using all too fancy a set up. I just try and work a lot on trying to give every note it's full value. Practice slow and really make sure that you're getting each note as clean as possible. That should do wonders for your tone, no amps or effects involved!

      I could see that. Theory is kind of like lifting the curtain up in some way. Though for myself, I think it really helps me appreciate something more as it gives me a language to be able to understand my appreciation of the music. To me, it's amazing that they made the choices that they did, whether they thought about it with theory or not. And it's super cool to know that, if I want to get that kind of sound for myself, this is the place to start theory and note choice wise.

    It's pretty wild how obsessed people have become with American Football. It's a good album but there's more out there from that time period and prior to that is just as good. Constantly trying to recreate the sound/style of their first album just dilutes what made it good in the first place. Not knocking your video, just the obsession that some people have with it. Hopefully this doesn't come off as too harsh.

      Honestly, off the top of my head, I can't tell a lot of bands who really sound like AF. I mean, I see a lot more bands trying to emulate the standard "midwest emo" sound, which is different in my perception.
      This is a controversial issue, but I'll try to pin it down quickly : American Football is so different from the other "midwest emo" bands that it seems unlogical to me that they would fall under the same category ; I feel like it lacks the post-hardcore influence that pervades all the others "midwest emo" bands. American Football is about melodic layers, contrapuntal style, open tunings, irregural meters ; totally different from the distorted chords, screamed vocals and "wall of sound" style you find in Sunny Day Real Estate or Mineral, for instance. So why gathering them in the same genre, for god's sake ? Buuut that's just my 2 cents you know.
