Goldeen/Seaking I agree with but I'd definitely say Poliwrath is more underrated than the widely accepted lesser Lapras (Dewgong) and Poliwrath is objectively more underrated than Kingler
I thought he would say Goldeen as well. I've definitely used Poliwrath before really cool design and attack stat. Goldeen just comes off as a generic fish
I’d argue that Clefable is a sleeper in the original games, especially with the special stat apply to both special attack and special defence. A wide move pool makes it relevant throughout the whole game and useful come the elite 4.
Yeah I used Clefable almost every time. The main thing that made so many Pokemon bad in gen 1 was the lack of good moves and Clefable can learn almost every single one of them.
Clefable was a sleeper because most of us were little boys and for most little boys, Clefable is pink and cute so it's not cool. Little boys only like dragon and ghost. 🗿
I used to use Clefable in ALL of my Gen 1-4 playthroughs where I could as a kid, because I didn’t know STAB was a thing that existed. So once I used one and saw it could learn almost all of the TMs I booted up, I assumed it was one of the best and most versatile Pokémon in the game.
Challenge Accepted. Will update on how it goes. I used cheats to get them all at the start so I can use them as much as possible. Hope that doesn't disqualify me lol. Update: I did it. I had to get the whole team up to lv 60 before taking on the league. Yes, I used the required Movesets. Slurp the Golbat Astro the Clefable Megamind the Alakazam Nope the Onyx Dude the Polywrath This the Magneton Final thoughts: Really wasn't that hard imo. Even with Onyx, I wasn't significantly challenged. Golbat was probably the worst in my team, actually. It wasn't a hard hitter at all - couldn't one shot anything besides low leveled Pokemon. Who was the best? Probably Clefable. With such a colorful moveset, it could stand against pretty much anything. This was fun. I am willing to try the gen 2 team.
I have actually used this team before. For context: My father, brother, and I played Pokémon Red and Blue when it first came out. I got Charmander on my first playthrough and beat the game with just that Pokémon...You all know we did one Pokémon runs at some point, usually unintentionally. But at the end of the day I wanted to get my own Pokémon and go on a full adventure. But I didn't want to just play with another Charmander and instead, I traded my starter to my dad after I beat brock (I think it was a Squirtle) so I could go catch my first real Pokémon using one my dad traded for my Squirtle (I think it was a Sandshrew he gave me). I caught a Zubat first, named it 'Flappers' I think, and then sought out an Onix for a good two or three hours because that was (and still is) my favorite Pokémon...I ended up calling it 'Pebbles' and moving on. I ended up catching a Clefairy too, just because that was something I knew evolved via moon stone and my dad likely needed one, but when I asked if he had it he said he did so I kept Peeps (It reminded me of the candy, what can I say?). The choice for Abra was one of spite as it teleported and I wanted it, so I kept trying (wasted so many balls) and ended up catching and switch-training it until it evolved and wrecked shop as a Kadabra before I learned I had to trade it through a strategy guide and begged my dad to trade me it to and from his game as I didn't trust my older brother to not try and keep my Pokémon. I remember I called him 'Houdini' after my dad called it a little Houdini after he had issues catching one. I also remember this was the name as I asked my dad to spell it for me as I didn't know how to spell the name. Poliwag was just a first catch with the Good Rod after I got it in Fuchsia City, really just RNG, and I named it 'Frogger' as I expected it to become a frog as it was a 'Tadpole' Pokémon. Magnemite was the last one I got at the Power Plant as I thought it was cool and I wanted it. I named it 'Ohm' not realizing the significance of the name due to my father having an Ohm Meter. I just knew at the time it was meant to measure something with electricity (which I know now is for electric resistances, but hey). Wish I still had the team. I traded my team into Generation 2 due to the Time Capsule, not wanting to leave them behind, but they would eventually be erased due to a dead save battery.
You couldn't have traded it further as Gen 2 couldn't trade to Gen 3 because Pokemon Gold/Silver was incompatible with future games. Still, I remember my first team in Pokemon Red: It was Charizard, Sandslash, Starmie, Jigglypuff and Vileplume. Gosh, gonna rebuild that team in Pokemon Let's Go now that I can afford it now.
So I have played through Kanto way to many times to count. So I'm looking forward to this. Ironically the team you mintioned was used when I let my friend pick the Pokemon I use off of the original 151 puzzle. Good times but man I feel old now.
"This team will more than likely not be able to get through the game with any sort of ease" I mean I like the idea of this team and some of these Pokemon I personally have never used and don't know someone who did, but that statement kinda felt forgotten as soon as the whole team was dropped. Sure it'll be an annoying start but as soon as you get your Abra to level 16 before Misty there is nothing that will stop this from being easy. In fact you can evolve Kadabra right away as Alakazam still learns moves just as fine so from there on the only "tough" part is putting the team together and end the run.
yeah I just beat Blaine 6 levels lower for every mon on my team. It's kinda weird that Abra also can learn Seismic Toss, so no switch training necessary early on since the TM is just north of Cerulean Bridge.
@@HomeCookinMTG I totally get that but the point is a bit off with saying "more than likely won't beat it if you have this team". Kind of would have wished for some more Pokemon that not a lot of people really ever used like Victreebel or Mr. Mime. The vast majority of people used Alakazam or Kadabra rather but there is just a rather minor difference between those 2 when it comes to beating the game. Kadabra will perform just as well as Alakazam. But a Slowbro, Mr. Mime or Jynx as Psychic Pokemon I feel like were more rare and cool to see in a team like that. :)
@@soulair2628 you wind up using a lot of these in nuzlockes tbh. Slowbro is a great back up if you don't get starmie, since I personally banned Gyarados from my runs. And victreebel is a good encounter if you picked Charmander and don't have a good answer for misty
I agree with what you’re saying, and I don’t think alakazam or any trade Pokémon should be in the team, although he’s right that getting the trade evolutions like machamp Gengar alakazam and golem were almost impossible to get unless you had a second game boy, game and link cable if he’s stuck to that logic he could just use all of the trade evolutions for 3/4 of his team
i mean its not really 100% a weakest team its more like what are the odds anyone ever decided to use each of these which, aside from 3ds ports or emulator hacking, means that someone would be very unlikely to evolve their kadabra
@@javelin4646 I get that i just feel like you need to add some nuzlocke rules or something cause even kadabra is really strong and honestly with alakazam you loose alot of the challenge because he could solo the game
During my first playthrough of Yellow back when it first came out, I ended up with a level 100 Raticate with the moveset Bubblebeam, Blizzard, Thunderbolt and I think Body Slam. That thing dominated the entire game.
@@davekachel you're not wrong but at like 6 years old and only understanding the basics this Raticate, that I raised from a level ~4 Ratata, was godly. Especially when the rest of my team was pretty underused
Same, it just feels right to take your first Pokemon all the way to the end of the game. I think it's one of the reasons that people take their Pidgey equivalent to the end of the game too. It's usually the first (or second depending on the game) Pokemon you catch. Feels right to take them all the way.
I definitely agree with Onix. I want to use one, but I keep forgetting to get one in Kanto and every other generation has it impractical without evolving by trade.
I'd say switch Alakazam for Hypno, Clefable for Wigglytuff and Poliwrath for Seaking. You can even switch out Golbat for either Butterfree or Beedrill.
@@Sparkcell275 That's a nice switch. I'm planning to run one of the Gen 1 games trying out teams like this on my own time and tbh, I've never used Porygon...ever.
@@diode_wow cool, just getting porygon is a bitch but what sucks is it just isn’t a good mon. That’s why I figure nobody uses it. It’ll have good type coverage at least?
I was surprised with the choice of Poliwrath as the water pokemanz. I was expecting to hear Dewgong, Cloyster, Krabby or Seaking. But then again the fact that I'm surprised proves your point.
I think a Better team would be: Golbat, Farfetch'd, Jynx, Dewgong, Onix, Beedrill i haven't played Gen 1 before and don't know about other peoples teams, but i think these fit well
I ran a lot of odd teams in Gen 1. My favourite though was, - *Golem* - Fire Blast, Earthquake, Rock Slide, Strength. - Dodrio; Fly, Tri Attack, Body Slam, Double Team. - Poliwrath; Surf, Submission, Ice Beam, Hypnosis. - Arcanine; Flamethrower, Double Edge, Dig, Bite. - Electrode; Thunderbolt, Explosion, Light Screen, Reflect. - Victreebel; Sleep Powder, Solar Beam, Swords Dance, Cut.
On my first Blue run through 23 years ago I did have Onix, Golbat, Clefable, Kadabra along with Blastoise and Pidgeot, so 4 out of 6 sort of. Took me a while to figure out why Kadabra wouldn't evolve by leveling up.
Gen 1 magneton also doesn’t have the ability levitate to avoid ground types. Also, I could see tentacruel replacing poliwrath but poliwrath makes sense on this list due to golbat. However, farfetched could replace golbat as the flyer.
Ill admit I read "you've never used this team" almost like the idea of a team so chock full of rare pokemon its inconceivable to imagine you could get all of them together in one playthrough' (clefairy, chansey, porygon, etc)
Clefairy and Kadabra are two of my Pokemon Yellow staples. Though including an Alakazam makes it near-literally impossible for me to ever use the team exactly as described for Gen 1 because of how hard it was to trade with people back then....let alone if my Yellow cartridge still works I doubt I could somehow find people now to trade back-and-forth with.
Oml, I had that exact Clefairy as a kid in my first ever playthrough of Pokemon Red! My favorite member of the team. In fact the only member I remember. I was just thinking "let's see it had t-bolt, ice beam, tri attack and probably bubblebe-" and then you showed the exact moveset on the screen. :)
Hey! Great video. Next time you do one of these tho, could you include the base stats from gen 1 since special attack and defense are the same in that gen?
I didn't realize Clefairy was so rare, I remember catching one and throwing it in the box 😂 Hey! I'm using poliwrath right now in ultra moon! 😂 He can really take hits
Well I taken up the challenge on my 3ds vc version of Blue and well I don't think the Clerfairy's rarity is that bad due to me encountering 5 Clefairies in a row in Mt. Moon so yeah no problem on that end! XD
Mystic. This might be a lot of work, so I just propose it as an idea. You could try doing a Google form or something (like FlygonHG doing community posts for his snaplockes) for future videos like the Johto one down the line, and then say "which is the top 8/9/10 (etc.) most forgettable Pokemon for you?" as a community post question. Then we fill out forms. Then you choose the 6 with the most votes, because most of us would never use these, which is overall more accurate. BTW: Just beat Blaine 10 min ago. Need to beat Erika and Sabrina turns out in order to get to Giovanni in Viridian. Long road I guess. Also I got significantly attached to Clefable and Onix.
Yeap, Giovani only show up in Viridian when his badge is the last one you need. No matter in what order you get them in general, he wont appear until you have 7.
Clefable's actually nutty good-it's actually 6% encounter rate in Mt. Moon bottom floor, Normal STAB is GOATed, fast exp. rate makes a huge huge difference. It's kinda funny to see amazing pokes like Clefable and Alakazam next to stinkers like Golbat and Onix. I think Poliwag's pretty good because all Water-types are good. Gen 1's the gen with really bad move distribution-we see this with Golbat, who doesn't get a STAB move above 35 base power-so the fact that every Water-type can get Surf and Ice Beam/Blizzard makes them all at least usable. Of interest also is the traded Poliwag in Japanese Blue who gets the outsider exp. bonus so can reach high levels super fast
I've always wanted a "weird" pokemon team. Not necessarily bad, but just uncommon choices. For example: Beheeyem Kecleon Hitmontop Maractus/Vileplume Donphan Slurpuff
It’s been so long since I played Gen 1, I kind of use the Gen 3 or 7 remakes as they’re more readily available. 1. You’re right; there are better Flying and/or Poison types. The Pidgey and Spearow lines are available for longer and the Doduo line’s more aggressive than both. There are a ton of Poison types in Kanto, but their primary use is for defense. Pokémon like the Tentacool line are surprisingly good in Gen 1 because it has 100 Base Speed and 120 Base Special when fully evolved. 2. It’s hard to justify using the Clefairy line when it’s level up moves early on are really bad. The kings of Normal types in Kanto are Tauros and Snorlax, but they kind of show up later than I would like. Meowth/Persian might be a fun way to mix-up the next Kanto run. As for the Gen 7 remakes, I have eyes set on Vulpix/Ninetails (Alola). It’s available shortly before the fourth Gym. 3. I’ve never used Onix in Gen 1 or its remakes, but I can recommend it in Johto. I usually pick up Diglett/Dugtrio shortly before the 3rd gym to easily deal with it. 4. Alakazam is the powerhouse Special Attacker in Gen 1. Drowzee/Hypno was kind of my go-to since it was discount Alakazam, but other Psychic types like Exeggcute/Exeggutor or Starmie have some fun moves to take advantage of. 5. Oddly enough, Poliwhirl sees more use than Wrath because it has a higher base speed. Gyarados and Vaporeon may have been the go-tos, but I still say the Tentacool line is kind of underrated. There are worse Water types like Goldeen/Seaking, Krabby/Kingler, or Seel/Dewgong. 6. Almost all Electric types can learn Thunder Wave/Bolt naturally or through TM, so I’d probably choose whatever’s convenient (like Pikachu) or faster/hits harder (like Jolteon).
I love poliwrath but they really made him a physical attacking water type. Poor guy doesn't get decent till Gen 6 and by that time azumarill got huge power.
@@user-ni7ui1nk8p yes but in gen 1 special attack and special defense we’re together meaning it was special and the move amnesia raise sharply of special for Pokémon like slowbro snorlax and Poliwrath as well
Bruh, poliwrath has access to amnesia one of the most broken moves in gen 1 lmao and you don't need a good rod for it, you can catch it easily with the super rod on route 6 as a Poliwhirl
This is basically my 2nd playthrough team after I beat any pokemon game with my protagonist starter Pokemon team. If the pokemon looks cool they're on the team regardless of weakness or stat. "Hop in rattata, you're going on the pokemon league champion team screen"
Whenever I do a playthrough of an old Pokemon game, I make it a point to use monsters I've never ever used before. Believe it or not, I ended up with a team very similar to this, albeit it was in Leaf Green instead of true Gen 1. I believe the two differences were Parasect instead of Alakazam, and Raichu instead of Magneton. It was actually a not half bad run, from what I remember. Parasect was obviously the weakest point of the team, but I made it work.
Apart from Magneton which was one of my most used mons for gens 1-4 (to the point were I didn't use it again until USUM because I had overused it) I'd say that's a very good list.
I've done so many nuzlockes in Kanto just for fun that I had used these mons toghether at some point. Although Onix... be careful with the rocky snake, it's very weak.
I used Blastoise, Poliwrath, Nidoking, Pidgeot, Dewgong, and MissingNo (I was a glitch freak) for my first playthrough of Blue. I’m realizing now I had an obsession with water types.
I have a penchant for playing through Pokemon games multiple times while trying not to use the same team members too often. As such, I've used quite the variety of team members over the years. I've also been working to use every fully-evolved Pokemon in a solo run. Here's my history with each Pokemon listed here: Golbat: I've used Crobat a couple times (Gold, Emerald, Pearl), but never a Golbat. I'll be doing a Blue solo run with it soon, though. Clefable: I've used this twice so far (Diamond, Shining Pearl), but never in Kanto, ironically. Should be interesting soloing Y version with it. Alakazam: I've used this one (Crystal) and Kadabra (FireRed, LeafGreen) a few times between them, but never Alakazam in Kanto. I'm sure it will destroy X and Sun just fine, though. Onix: I've actually used an Onix in LeafGreen before. It... wasn't a good time. Never actually used a Steelix until recently though (HeartGold).I'll be soloing Red with it, as well as X and Omega Ruby with Steelix. Poliwrath: I've never used a Poliwrath at all. Politoed twice (Crystal, HeartGold), but not Wrath. I'll be soloing X and Y with Politoed and Poliwrath respectively. Magneton: I've used this in Red version, but I made the rookie mistake of only having Thunder as it's Electric move, having put Thunderbolt on Raticate. I'll be returning to it in a Blue solo run though.
personally for magneton i would teach it thunderbolt over thunder mostly because of accuracy. sure Thunder is the stronger move and its only really REALLY good if you use rain dance but i think thunderbolt is the better move
what's the clegable picture at 4:26 from? It's pretty rare I come across old watercolor style pokemon art I haven't seen before and that one is so cute
Well, I haven't played original RGB, but in Fire Red I've used Onix, Golbat, Clefable and Alakazam. To be honest, only Onix was a pokemon I choosed to normal run (because Brock have one and it's cool-looking rock snake), Golbat and Clefable was in monotype runs (and Clefable with Snorlax were my MVPs as Normal-type Expert) and Alakazam I get in Randomizer Nuzlocke, but it haven't finished this challange.
My very first team that I made myself was venasaur, clefable, onyx, haunter, electubuzz, and dragonite. But before I had my first Pokémon game I used Pokémon in my cousins PC that he didn’t care for. So the Pokémon Raichu, ninetails, golduck, golem, dodrio and Mr.mime are close in my heart. I remember call them “team leftover” because it was the leftover “good” Pokémon I could use to face the elite 4.
So, after experimenting on this team proposed by Mystic, I have established my opinions: 1. Alakazam is extra good with Recover and Seismic Toss (Yes, Abra can learn Seismic Toss) 2. I have more respect for Onix, originally I already liked it, especially since it matches up well against Agatha (Ghost is physical in Gen 1) 3. Golbat is very good at stopping the Dragons with Gen 1 Psychic-move bait mechanics, Golbat is an all rounder in this team. (I personally felt like Poliwrath is really hard to use, even though I don't like Gen 1 Golbat) 4. X Accuracy Thunder 5. Clefable is actually a decent bulky pokemon, but it doesn't hit hard at all, even with super effective moves barring 4x, evident with Hyper Beam Dragonairs doing 60% while Clefable can only two shot them. 6. I think any maze is hard for me in this particular Pokemon experience. Rock Tunnel and Seafoam Islands especially. Mount Moon, Victory Road and (Spirit?) Tower are also annoying with their Zubats, Machops and Gastlys without repels.
Spirit Tower?? That would be a much better name in the English versions! Unfortunately all we got was Lavender Tower, just the city name, plain and simple.
I use Golbat (I love Zubat more and hold off evolution sometimes) and Clefable (I love this chonky boi) out of these listed in the video for gen 1 games. I don't think it's important which Mons you choose for gen 1, you can beat the entire game with a Pidgey as challenge videos have proven (I've done it myself too as Pidgey is one of my favs). I don't think it's hard to believe someone out there had had this team at least once.
Clafairy and Abra were rare encounters, but I know people went after them a lot when I was a kid. Better to replace both of them with Chansey and scyther from the safari zone, both because they're rare and really hard to catch, and Scyther's high crit rate actually makes it less good in gen 1 since crits would ignore it's swords dance builds. You'd double up on flying, but you could always replace Golbat with Muk or Weezing
I have used a team with half of these pokemon recently if that counts ( Onix, clefable and poliwrath ) not sure if the other 3 hurt the team but onix is passable with some clever use, clefable can solo half the trainers in the game and poliwarth is just okay though it does great up until the elite four where it kinda struggles
Unusual pokemon i used as a kid before the internet barely existed and there was no online stat readings and tips, but really just the game itself and whatever pokemon you liked to use, i used Sandslash and Raticate a lot in my teams and i actually also used golbat relatively often, sure i mostly used pidgeot but sometimes i ran with both simply because i thought that golbat had a cool name and design, a big vampire bat. I also sometimes used Venomoth.
I actually love making teams and playing through with Pokemon people don't normally or never use in playthrough it's a super fun time and on the plus side you may end up liking or even loving some of the underrated Pokemon that people don't play with
Not RBY, but playing through Kanto in "Let's Go, Eevee" I decided to use as unorthodox of a combination of 'mons as possible because I knew my starter Eevee could defeat practically anything if my back was ever against the wall, and I wasn't bound by required HM's. I ended up with a team of Eevee, Onix, Mr. Mime, Hitmonchan, Farfetch'd and Tangela.
So, two of the Pokemon I am about to mention are very widely used but they are my top two favorites so I couldn't leave them out, but the other four I think are relatively unused. Charizard, Gengar, Parasect, Primeape, Kingler and Hypno. That's the team I am using in FireRed.
Me sitting over here crying because my main go to flyer was Fearow. Loved that drill peck. I was always too frustrated with how long it took to evolve to Pidgeot. I'll admit I never really ran Clefable. Mostly because Clefairy was never that great at battling. I was very much the type of person who didn't appreciate status such as Sing and wanted something that hit hard. I had Kadabra, but never had an Alakazam as you've said. I just got to listen for years about how overpowered it was. I tried Onix once thinking I'd have an awesome Pokemon, and then was left in confusion when everything that hit special seemed to wipe it out in one hit and then when Onix did get a hit in even ten levels higher than the Pokemon it was against it barely did enough to bruise. I actually did like Poliwrath, but I've always preferred Gyarados or Vaporeon for my Gen 1 water type. I think it suffered from the same thing as Flareon where they're like "Yeah, let's make a physical attacker...from a Pokemon whose type is special!" I've never played with a Politode for the same reason I never bothered with Alakazam. Along with Electrode I'll say Magneton was one of my least used electric types of Gen 1. Love it now of course. All in all I'd say an interesting concept of a team. I only have Yellow, but I'm still going to give it a try.
I actually had this team in Firered, and I kept it for quite a while! I beat Koga and Blaine with this team. But, I did not have Clefairy, instead, I had my starter, Ivysaur
I've literally used Kadabra or Alakazam every time I've played gen 1. It wasn't difficult to obtain. You just catch something that knows a sleep move. Or, just chuck a ball at it, if you're lucky you can get it. I feel like this is actually a common choice for playthroughs because of how broken the Psychic type is in gen 1. Clefable isn't an uncommon choice either, it's slightly rare but most people wander around stuck in Mt. Moon long enough that they run into one.
Also as a huge wrestling fan.....any mon who could use a move called Submisson were high priority to use. Blastiose was my 1st Starter and Poliwrath was my water type for my second run ever with my charmander starter. Also really surprised that Kanghaskan or Chansey wasnt here with there hard Safari catch rate
I recently did what I called a "misfit" run (pokemon I felt people didn't really use in during those gens) on gens 1-3 and the teams were as follows: Gen 1: Butterfree (Ace), Raticate, Clefable, Onix, Mr. Mime, and Lickitung Gen 2: Politoad(Ace), Furret, Jumpluff, Wobuffet, Delibird, and Hitmontop Gen 3: Sceptile(not really a misfit; I've never used one), Beautifly, Sharpedo, Linoone, Minun, and Altaria I've started a gen4 one but never finished it so I won't post that team since it was never finalized
Fearow and Dodrio are the best flying types for a playthrough of RBY as they have both higher speed and attack than pidgeot, are available earlier than Aerodactyl and they get drill peck. Also Poliwrath get gen 1 amnesia, the one that boost special by two stage, you know the one that is both attack and defense.
Bold of Mystic to assume I'd play gen 1. I've already completed my hardcore nuzlock, my full mono electric type team in Yellow (had to be it because Pikachu follows you) and my mono bug type, to see if bugs are really bad.
What are talking about? Clefairy is only a 1% chance on the 1st floor of Mt. Moon. The chances for a Clefairy to show up increases in the basement floors so it's a bit more common for one to show up.
I used a few of those pokemon during my Red/Blue runs back when they came out but I don't recall who. I do remember playing Pokemon Crystal and using a level 36 Steelix to take beat the snot out of Reds level 81 Pikachu though. What an epic fight that was...
This was legit one of my teams, all except for Golbat. But he only had the 1st gen to choose from, and I’ve made a lot of teams on that gen. More bad teams than good. But hell, when Red and Blue finally dropped in America I was addicted to Pokémon anything. Still, nice video mystic. ❤u
I used a weird team in pokemon sword: consisting of Tyranitar, Persian (regular), steelix, Lucario, Alakazam, and a shiny Blastiose I got, like this comment if you think this team was unique
Really looking forward to a Johto episode of this! I'm running through Silver right now with Meganium, Ampharos, Corsola, Forretres, Shuckle, and Delibird. It's interesting!
I have actually used a very similar team on one of my main play throughs of blue. I remember it was Poliwhirl, Kadabra, Magneton, Jigglypuff, Golbat, and I think Blastoise. Or if it was the nuz lock then was Victorybell. That Poliwhirl was awesome, it dominated the game. I named it Pammy
When I was playing gen 1 I was little kid that had no idea what was strong and what was weak so I picked my team based on how cool I thought they were. Onix was in my Pokemon champion team. 😅
@@susear5939 same, I had a Raichu in the team too because I loved Lt Sarge's Raichu, I couldn't believe Pikachu wanted to stay a Pikachu when I first saw how cool that Raichu was! The anime is another reason I had an Onix it was Brock's ace and I identified a lot with Brock because I thought he looked like me. Lol
I've only played pokemon red once And I used 1 of the 6 Clefairy was in fact one of my favourites The team was: tORTUGA Blastoise, Sinatra Clefairy, He ballin' Electrode, Buff Men Dugtrio, Cryo Articuno and Missigno I still think it is one of my favourite teams
Me : "alright. A team nobody would use in a playthrough? I'll give it a try" Also me with no link cable growing up or knowledge of how to get trade evos in gen 1 emulation now: ".... Well $#!?... Guess I can't"
I feel called out because I know for a fact that all of them have been on my teams back in the day. Probably not exactly the team shown here because my starter was always on my team. But Golbat was there. I loved Clefable and Wigglytuff and had at least one of them with me. Sandslash was my ground Pokemon because even young me realized that Onix can't kill anything on it's own. I had nobody to trade with, so Kadabra or Haunter have also been high contender. And Poliwrath was something I even used in later generations. So yeah... While not exactly this team, I have to report that I had teams like this constantly as a kid just because I liked them. This also predates the time where you had easy access to guides and I was too young to do the numbers crunching myself. (Or didn't care enough. Probably that as well) And the guides I had access to, mainly from magazines, have also been of questionable quality looking back. Some other "allstars" I liked back in the day were Parasect, Persian, Golduck and Arbok... And yes, Bruno has been an issue for me more often than not with whatever bullshit team I had at the time.
Lol, Poliwhirl/wrath and Magneton are two of my favourites. I don't remember ever using them in RBY, but I definitely had both of them on more than one Gold or Silver playthrough.
Back when red and blue came out it was no problem at all to get the trade evolutions, all the nerds had the game at school, and if they didn't you could go to books a million on the weekends for TCG meetups and trade with someone there
I feel like Alakazam was THE psychic mon to use in gen 1, you probably could have replaced it with Hypno as a much less used gen 1 psychic type.
Why not Zoidberg? Er... I mean Jynx.
I personally had NEVER used Alakazam on any game that required trading to use it.
ive only used kadabra
I used all Psychics except for Mewtwo and Alakazam
Many people never got to evolve Kadabra, though, because they didn't have anyone to trade with.
I wish you had used one of the actually-underrated Water types like Goldeen or Seel or Krabby, I feel like Poliwag is a fairly common choice
Fully agree. My money was on Seaking for the water type
Yep
Goldeen/Seaking I agree with but I'd definitely say Poliwrath is more underrated than the widely accepted lesser Lapras (Dewgong) and Poliwrath is objectively more underrated than Kingler
I thought he would say Goldeen as well. I've definitely used Poliwrath before really cool design and attack stat. Goldeen just comes off as a generic fish

Yeah I used Clefable almost every time. The main thing that made so many Pokemon bad in gen 1 was the lack of good moves and Clefable can learn almost every single one of them.
Same re Clefable. It's ALWAYS on my Red Blue or Yellow team haha
Clefable was a sleeper because most of us were little boys and for most little boys, Clefable is pink and cute so it's not cool. Little boys only like dragon and ghost. 🗿
@@PrimarchRoboleonFrenchyman 😅😅👌
It's not even a sleeper, it's one of the most commonly used pokemon, this list is moronic lol
It is still pretty good IMO. STAB usually works best for 4x weak mons or a very bulky opposing mon which needs STAB to breakthrough its weakness.
Challenge Accepted. Will update on how it goes.
I used cheats to get them all at the start so I can use them as much as possible. Hope that doesn't disqualify me lol.
Update:
I did it.
I had to get the whole team up to lv 60 before taking on the league. Yes, I used the required Movesets.
Slurp the Golbat
Astro the Clefable
Megamind the Alakazam
Nope the Onyx
Dude the Polywrath
This the Magneton
Final thoughts: Really wasn't that hard imo.
I traded my team into Generation 2 due to the Time Capsule, not wanting to leave them behind, but they would eventually be erased due to a dead save battery.
damn
I'm pretty sure it's fairly possible to replace the battery
@@juicyjuicethejuice4451 That it is. Uses a CR2025
I think there's another one like 1616 or 1717 or smth
"This team will more than likely not be able to get through the game with any sort of ease"
I mean I like the idea of this team and some of these Pokemon I personally have never used and don't know someone who did, but that statement kinda felt forgotten as soon as the whole team was dropped.
I kind of feel like Alakazam was only included because it's a trade evolution, and of course none of us had friends to trade with when we were kids.
@@chongz3 I mean Blaine is always a joke his AI sucks, and all of his Pokemon die to surf spam
This team is pretty wack and it makes me want to use it. I'm excited to see what you put down for gen 2 as they're my favorite games in the series!
I bought Pokémon red and I decided to use this team but I had decided to swap out Golbat for Charizard so I would have a Pokémon for Brocks gym
i feel like alakazam is too strong to put on here especially with how easy trading is now in the 3ds ports
Yeah Alakazam can easily solo
i mean its not really 100% a weakest team its more like what are the odds anyone ever decided to use each of these which, aside from 3ds ports or emulator hacking, means that someone would be very unlikely to evolve their kadabra
Not only that, but many players use Kadabra because it's so strong in Gen1 even without evolving.
That thing dominated the entire game.
everything lvl 100 dominates the game
@@davekachel you're not wrong but at like 6 years old and only understanding the basics this Raticate, that I raised from a level ~4 Ratata, was godly. Especially when the rest of my team was pretty underused
I have never played pokemon games without starter pokemon. As if they are the main flavour of the games.
Same, it just feels right to take your first Pokemon all the way to the end of the game. I think it's one of the reasons that people take their Pidgey equivalent to the end of the game too. It's usually the first (or second depending on the game) Pokemon you catch. Feels right to take them all the way.
Growing up I boxed my starter often not knowing that they had any special qualities
Switch clefable for porygon. Wigglytuff is actually pretty decent in comparison and far easier to get.
@@Sparkcell275 That's a nice switch. I'm planning to run one of the Gen 1 games trying out teams like this on my own time and tbh, I've never used Porygon...ever.

I was surprised with the choice of Poliwrath as the water pokemanz. I was expecting to hear Dewgong, Cloyster, Krabby or Seaking. But then again the fact that I'm surprised proves your point.
Cloyster was a powerhouse in generation one.
I think a Better team would be: Golbat, Farfetch'd, Jynx, Dewgong, Onix, Beedrill
i haven't played Gen 1 before and don't know about other peoples teams, but i think these fit well
Those are definitely Pokémon that aren’t commonly used but there’s too many overlapping types
Switch out Dewgong and use either Kabutops or Omastar that’s taught ice beam. Trade in Farfetch’d for the expensive Porygon
@@tae7073 thats why they aren't used lol
Jynx is strong in gen 1
I did a run on blue recently, and my end team was:
Persian
Persian
Venusaur
Starmie
Dodrio
Muk
now that is a team I could have used in my runs if I didn't prefer to replay Red over Blue =D
I ran a lot of odd teams in Gen 1. My favourite though was,
- *Golem* - Fire Blast, Earthquake, Rock Slide, Strength.
Same, i had my Kadabra around level 70 and still was getting pissed why it didn't evolve
Gen 1 magneton also doesn’t have the ability levitate to avoid ground types. Also, I could see tentacruel replacing poliwrath but poliwrath makes sense on this list due to golbat. However, farfetched could replace golbat as the flyer.
Magneton doesn't get levitate, even today
Ill admit I read "you've never used this team" almost like the idea of a team so chock full of rare pokemon its inconceivable to imagine you could get all of them together in one playthrough' (clefairy, chansey, porygon, etc)
That would be a really cool idea. You could call it a "treasure hunter run" or something
Sounds fun for a playthrough, just go for the 1-5% encounters on the routes and make a team out of that.
Emulators exist
Yeah I've used that a lot. I feel like those two are common for runs.
@@darklordhyper how do you emulate a trade?
@@Soren27 Open two instances of the game at the same time, do the local link thing, and boom, you can trade between those instances
I used poliwrath in one play through… but rival had Charizard, so it’s wing attack ruined my only answer for it 😭
Wing attack is 30 base power
Parasect, wigglytuff, venomoth, sealing, lickitung, and farfetch'd would like to lay claim to that as well
Oml, I had that exact Clefairy as a kid in my first ever playthrough of Pokemon Red!
Even though it's not great but poliwrath has always been one of my favorites
Plus it's shiny is pretty awesome as well
For me that's Dunsparce. Its not that great, but I adore it.
Onix should be running Bind over Body Slam. Free dot that locks opponents into not getting to attack
I didn't realize Clefairy was so rare, I remember catching one and throwing it in the box 😂
Hey!
XD
It is not. He picked up only the first floor of the Mt. Moon. It appears a lot more often on the other floors.
I LOVE underrepresented Pokémon. Dunsparce, Girafarig, Relicanth, etc. Going to love this series.
Yeah you exacted your concept pretty dead on. I’ve only ever used the magnoton and Alakazam. Good vid!
I literally doing this RIGHT NOW AND DAMN YOU MYSTIC DAMN YOU the grind for this is just SUFFERING!!!! :'(
For example:
Beheeyem
Kecleon
Hitmontop
Maractus/Vileplume
Donphan
Slurpuff
If I had to make one specifically for Kanto:
Vileplume/Tangela
Lickitung
Hitmonchan
Marowak
Electabuzz
Omastar
You forgot poliwhirl learns amnesia at level 41 before evolving poliwrath it can use some special attacks
@@geomaster9409 amnesia boosts special defense, not special attack.
@@user-ni7ui1nk8p yes but in gen 1 special attack and special defense we’re together meaning it was special and the move amnesia raise sharply of special for Pokémon like slowbro snorlax and Poliwrath as well

@@bigjake360t good combo but I check focus punch does not exist in gen 2 games it was introduces in gen 3
Here's my history with each Pokemon listed here:
Golbat: I've used Crobat a couple times (Gold, Emerald, Pearl), but never a Golbat.
With the exception of Onix this is essentially my Red playthrough team... I had a Parasect instead of an Onix.
personally for magneton i would teach it thunderbolt over thunder mostly because of accuracy. sure Thunder is the stronger move and its only really REALLY good if you use rain dance but i think thunderbolt is the better move
Clefable has thunderbolt
what's the clegable picture at 4:26 from? It's pretty rare I come across old watercolor style pokemon art I haven't seen before and that one is so cute
I wish those cartridge batteries hadn't run out so I could see what my original Blue team (and Yellow and Silver team for that matter) was
Well, I haven't played original RGB, but in Fire Red I've used Onix, Golbat, Clefable and Alakazam. To be honest, only Onix was a pokemon I choosed to normal run (because Brock have one and it's cool-looking rock snake), Golbat and Clefable was in monotype runs (and Clefable with Snorlax were my MVPs as Normal-type Expert) and Alakazam I get in Randomizer Nuzlocke, but it haven't finished this challange.
actually I have used an Alakazam on a kanto team (it was lets go, not red and blue, but thats still kanto)
That Magneton artwork at 10:03 is crazyy
So, after experimenting on this team proposed by Mystic, I have established my opinions:
1. Alakazam is extra good with Recover and Seismic Toss (Yes, Abra can learn Seismic Toss)
2. I have more respect for Onix, originally I already liked it, especially since it matches up well against Agatha (Ghost is physical in Gen 1)
3. Golbat is very good at stopping the Dragons with Gen 1 Psychic-move bait mechanics, Golbat is an all rounder in this team. (I personally felt like Poliwrath is really hard to use, even though I don't like Gen 1 Golbat)
4. X Accuracy Thunder
Mystic: "Most people use Pigeot or Aerodactyl for their flyers"
Me: *laughs in Missingno*
I use Golbat (I love Zubat more and hold off evolution sometimes) and Clefable (I love this chonky boi) out of these listed in the video for gen 1 games. I don't think it's important which Mons you choose for gen 1, you can beat the entire game with a Pidgey as challenge videos have proven (I've done it myself too as Pidgey is one of my favs).
I don't think it's hard to believe someone out there had had this team at least once.
I’m gonna name my character Youngster and beat the game with a team of unevolved and only partially evolved early route Pokémon. Go team Pidgey!
So it would be something like...
Pidgey
Rattata
Spearow
Nidoran M
Nidoran F
Ekans/Sandshrew
???
Or throw a Magikarp in if the Youngster's family had an old rod to fish in the weekends xD
@@RadeticDaniel yes. I mean, over level enough and anything is possible in the main game.
Dude, you just described Pokemon my childhood runs used frequently.
Clefairy is a complete machine before evolving so clefable is OP
@@harbour08 your not wrong, though I evolved it almost as soon as I caught it so...
I actually love making teams and playing through with Pokemon people don't normally or never use in playthrough it's a super fun time and on the plus side you may end up liking or even loving some of the underrated Pokemon that people don't play with
I use Clefable a lot in my Gen 1 play throughs, and I used Poliwrath in the league of lets go
I just did a playthrough with these pokemon. It was rough but I was able to clear the game. This playthrough was awesome.
When I was 9, I did in fact use a clefairy in Blue. I do not remember how long I ran around in Mt Moon to find one, but boy was I proud that I did.
He builds a bizarre and unique team that will ironically continue to never be used as you sweep the game with Alakazam..
Honestly any of the safari zone rare pokemon could be put on here. Even Dratini just because of how much of a pain it is to catch and train up.
I recently did what I called a "misfit" run (pokemon I felt people didn't really use in during those gens) on gens 1-3 and the teams were as follows:
Gen 1: Butterfree (Ace), Raticate, Clefable, Onix, Mr. Mime, and Lickitung
Gen 2: Politoad(Ace), Furret, Jumpluff, Wobuffet, Delibird, and Hitmontop
Gen 3: Sceptile(not really a misfit; I've never used one), Beautifly, Sharpedo, Linoone, Minun, and Altaria
I've started a gen4 one but never finished it so I won't post that team since it was never finalized
Kadabra is always on my team regardless of gen, if its available it's on the team.
I was surprised you didn't pick dewgong for the water type.
I'm currently planning my 4th HeartGold playthrough
Meganium
Lanturn
Heracross
Dragonite (Dragonair at E4)
Mamoswine or Donphan
Porygon 2
It's a good thing I have not played gen 1 because that game was broken and Sabrina was the hardest gym leader.
This is so fun to watch late at night
My gen one team i like using is- charizard, primeape, nidoking, fearow, gyarados, raichu
I was thinking to play through fire red with only trade evolutions. Maybe a good idea for a video.
When I was playing gen 1 I was little kid that had no idea what was strong and what was weak so I picked my team based on how cool I thought they were. Onix was in my Pokemon champion team. 😅
I had Butterfree on my team cus Ash had one on his team. Butterfree on champion team. My team was heavily influenced by what I saw in the anime.
Lol
I’d switch Alakazam for Mr. Mime and Golbat for Farfetch’d
Mate I'm litterally doing this team challenge RIGHT NOW but I'm not grinding up a Farfetch'd after suffering the grind for Golbat!!!
All:
I haven't used this team
Scott Thoughts:
Hold my Pokéballs!
damn thats crazy I used this team in yellow version on my 3rd run through
How did it go for you?
@@dantelan-i-er5466 interesting lol thats the only way to put it
I've only played pokemon red once
And I used 1 of the 6
Clefairy was in fact one of my favourites
The team was:
tORTUGA Blastoise, Sinatra Clefairy, He ballin' Electrode, Buff Men Dugtrio, Cryo Articuno and Missigno
I still think it is one of my favourite teams
I haven't used this team exactly, but I have had a League-winning team in Pokemon Yellow featuring Alakazam, Onix, Poliwrath, and Magneton.
Me : "alright. A team nobody would use in a playthrough? I'll give it a try"
Also me with no link cable growing up or knowledge of how to get trade evos in gen 1 emulation now: ".... Well $#!?... Guess I can't"
Alakazam with psychic, thunder punch, fire punch, and ice punch was my jam
Hell yea, challenge accepted. I love obscure pokemon, let's see if I can bash my head against this game long enough to make this work.
Lol, Poliwhirl/wrath and Magneton are two of my favourites. I don't remember ever using them in RBY, but I definitely had both of them on more than one Gold or Silver playthrough.
Back when red and blue came out it was no problem at all to get the trade evolutions, all the nerds had the game at school, and if they didn't you could go to books a million on the weekends for TCG meetups and trade with someone there
Marriland did actually use a clefable for his old yellow lp. It has a gigantic backsprite too.
