now the big question, where did the little broken off piece go? if you are working on an engine. does it fall in the crank case? how can you do this safe?
There is a REAL Helicoil kit that has inserts with no tang. It has a different insertion tool. I imagine you use this style for spark plug holes/other through-holes.
He didn't set the tool stop (which is loosened using an Allen wrench) so that the tang was positioned halfway between the tool slot as the directions say. and he didn't screw the bolt all the way down in because he couldn't because the Helicoil likely jumped some threads and so he has to re-do it.
Some kits come the tap that matches the helicoil you’re purchasing. And the helicoil itself should be whatever diameter and pitch of the bolt you’re using. I realize this comment is year old now, and I’m sure you’ve found the answer by now. For example, I bought a “fix-a-thread kit for a M6-1.00 bolt. The helicoil is 1/4 52-20 and came with a matching tap. But the helicoil is for a M6-1.00 (6mm diameter - 1.00 thread pitch).
I need to repair threads in cast aluminum. The original threads were double or triple the length of the heli-coil. These are M10x1.5 bolts and the heli-coil is 15 mm long. Do I need to double up on the heli-coils? If so, are there any tricks to dong so?
02 Elantra......Anyone know what torque limit should be on this Helicoil's on a Timing Belt tensioner pulley Bolt which calls for 38Ft pound will these Helicoils hold up to 38 Ft of torque
Must be his first THREAD COIL job - did not check to see if coil "jumped threads" had to break tang with WAY too much impact, bolt did not thread all the way into the coil
If I screwed up quarter 20 bolt how do I know what size helicoil to get do I have to drill it out to what size so I can use quarter 20 again or will I have to go to a smaller bolt
If you've stripped a 1/4-20 thread, you can still use a 1/4-20 Helicoil to repair it. No need to go smaller. Here's the process: Use a 17/64" drill bit to clean out the damaged threads Tap with a 1/4-20 STI TAP (MAKE SURE IT IS AN STI BOTTOMING TAP) Install the 1/4-20 Helicoil This brings you back to a 1/4-20 thread. Always double-check your kit instructions for exact sizes. Got more questions? Fire away.
So if you screw up the threads in something you have to tap and die to a bigger size? Then put a helicoil in and go back with the original bolt? If I have a size ten metric bolt what size kit would I need to be able to rethread the same size bolt, as the bolt is special and is designed to hold onto a different nut above it. For lawnmower magneto.
It's the exact same process, and the new threading should be the same as the old threading (if the old threading was 1/4"-20, the repair kit should be the same). You drill through the messed up tapping by creating a slightly larger hole and then use the included tap in the repair kit to tap your slightly larger hole. The helicoil fills the space that was tapped, slightly shrinking the hole back down to what is was prior to the repair, but with new threading.
It's hilarious that two of the most upvoted comments on this video is one comment saying he didn't go into enough detail and another saying he gave too much. Good lord people.
You simply take a small screwdriver flat blade fit it on the tang and smack it with a hammer, mallet or dead blow hammer it will snap off easily, use air to blow it out of the hole, or a small magnet...
Well that was totally unhelpful, what happened to the tang?! And why did he drill it into a totally unrelated steel? In a vise? I mean how do you put the dang heliocoil in TV he engine? When you turn the little tool down to insert it the thing falls off! And the little too isn't long enough to reach it and turn it let alone snapped off a tang using a hammer? Why not just use a hammer on the whole engine?
I'm using this on my out drive gimbal housing. Two studs broke off in the housing. Gonna drill them out and try this. I just bought a whole kit on amazon for $70.
He’s just demonstrating how a helicoil works. Typically the hole is already there and the bolt has stripped out the threads like a spark plug hole for instance. The helicoil allows you to use the same diameter bolt.
In my situation the bolt runs through a center of a pully which then runs through a spacer that holds a tension bracket on my block. The fitment in the inside of that spacer is exactly the diameter of the bolt. If I go up a size it won’t work. So I’m drilling, tapping, and inserting a m8x1.25 helicoil.
Ya but sometimes not enough room for the bigger bolt head if its on a tight spot. Also stuff like spark plug holes, if they get stripped this best way of fixing it short of new head
its not a standard tap where a normal bolt could thread into it. Its labeled on the tap as an STI tap (special thread insert) made specifically work with the coil. This is used for when you don't have room to tap to the next bigger bolt size but instead need to use the same bolt.

If you use coil, you can use original bolt. Otherwise you would need one size bigger bolt. Also using coil thread will be even stronger than it originally was, if we are talking about aluminium.
. Are all helicoil inserts the same across all manufacturers meaning would the thread cut to take an M8 helicoil for example be suitable for any other make of insert?
now the big question, where did the little broken off piece go? if you are working on an engine. does it fall in the crank case? how can you do this safe?
The only reason I'm looking at a video of this to see what happens if you gotta fix a sparky
You have to remove the tangs.
There is a REAL Helicoil kit that has inserts with no tang. It has a different insertion tool. I imagine you use this style for spark plug holes/other through-holes.
Depending on what part you are rethreading, you may need to remove parts or use magnets through different holes to catch the tangs.
To breake off the tang , you normaly have to use a seperate punch, not the shown tool.
Thank you for your feedback.

it's also way easier outside of an engine bay
Next week, I am looking forward to going on a heeeeelicopter ride over the Grand Canyon.
Heh, good one! Enjoy the ride and the view. Just don't expect any Helicoil inserts up there.
I have a question at 3:33-3:43 please. What size tap do you use for a 1/4-20 helicoil?

Whats the point of the coil imsert if you are tapping it anyway?
some things cannot be enlarged like spark plug holes with wells only big enough for the original diameter spark plugs
The tongue of helicoil is cut or just bend it towards inner of hole?
Bent in
I’m struggling to understand how heli coils are sized, I got a m10 thread that is stripped so would I need to buy a m10 thread coil
yes and see what the thread pitch is

You cant double up on a coil.
@@AlbanyCountyFasteners so what is the solution?
You can only use one coil so find the longest coil on the market.
Sounds like a starter bolt...lol I'm doing that now...hahaha
i don't know about this brand but with helicoil you can certainly double up.
Does this thread support a strong twist of a screw?
You could over torque.

what should be the relationship between helicoil diameter and hole diameter ?
You installed the coil in a fresh thread. How does it work in a striped thread and how do you size that?
It's the exact same process, and the new threading should be the same as the old threading (if the old threading was 1/4"-20, the repair kit should be the same). You drill through the messed up tapping by creating a slightly larger hole and then use the included tap in the repair kit to tap your slightly larger hole. For that your best bet is a timesert.
@AlbanyCountyFasteners does it work for fluid? Like a stripped fuel inlet on a carburetor?
The videos from the helicoil company says once helicoil is set turning the tool it bend that piece around and you don't break anything off
I ordered M10x1.25mm for my 125cc ATV , the M10 size is the width of the spark plug right ? And the 1.25 the length of the thread
Check out Time Cert inserts
They’re more robust
I think the 1.25 is the pitch of the thread, distance between each thread, nothing to do with length.
Thanks for the tutorial
You're welcome! Glad it was helpful.
is inserting coil must use a special tool?
Yes. The tool is needed for both the installation and removing the tang on the insert.
Yes, the installation screw sleeve is made of a special tool
Hi can i ask if what size shoud i get for a standard 110cc motorcycle cylender head? Thanx its gonna help a lot..😍
Take the bolt to a hardware store and use one of their bolt gauges to size it.
Do they have theses for axles?

Dumb question here whats the point in a heli coil if you gotta tap it.Couldn't you just use a bolt now since you tapped it?

thought making installation automatically using digital.
My issue is I have a M8x45 bolt with the threads stripped. It’s a mount for motorcycle seat. I’m having issues finding correct helicoil kit.
It's OEM so go to the manufacture.
@@AlbanyCountyFasteners I already have the OEM part.. and the helicoil… it’s just an unusual size..of the actual threaded tab
does helicoil works with square or acme thread ?

Poor demo. At least you could have done a real repair. This really didn't tell a amateur why you are doing this and what it is really doing.

Really? Stainless? Most stripped threads are in aluminum. You can do better.

Thank you for showing to put the “tang” in the bottom of the hole...lol . The directions do not specify..
Glad we could clear that up! Thank you for your feedback.

Love metric ❤
If that bolt was supposed to screw all the way in then he was not happy with himself when he felt it stop turning right at the end.
STAINLESS STEEL DOESN'T STRIP, YOU SHOULD USED ALUMINUM. ALUMINUM IS A SOFT METAL. Meaning Aluminum is easy to strip.
So is stainless steel.
@@AlbanyCountyFasteners Sir You are Wrong. Between SS and Aluminum, the Aluminum is much softer.
@@waymonblevins6939 Both materials are rated soft metals. Pick your poison.
Don't you know how to say "three eighths" (3/8) ??? 🤔
When I grow up I want to have chunks of various metals around to "screw" around with.

So 1.5D that'll be 1.5 times the diameter which will be bla bla. Don't need to know. it's 1.5D that'll do !
