I'm in the minority who prefers smaller horses in this game (Arabians, Morgans, Mustangs, other horses which backs are shorter in height than Arthur/John), mostly because I am viewing the game and its horses through horse riding lenses. As humongous and impressive Shires, Ardennes and Dutch Warmbloods look because of their taller size, as a horse for cowboys/western riders I think they are not very suitable. Arthur makes mounting from the ground on the Shire look too easy - it's almost impossible to get on Shire's back without a mounting block or without higher terrain. Considering what IRL western/cowboy horses have to be able to perform, smaller horses are far more versatile. Because of their size and shorter backs (that's mainly Quarters, American Paints, Arabians), they are able to carry a heavier rider without issues and their size allows them to turn much faster than taller, heavier breeds. It's also far more easier to get back in the saddle. Smaller horses also tend to have better endurance and that applies especially to Arabians who dominate endurance racing. These horses can tackle over 100 kilometre race in roughly 15 hours, with those horses either trotting or cantering very long distances without stopping. That's of course the most elite horses and riders. So as ridiculous Arthur looks in the saddle of almost pony sized Arabian, I'll still prefer the skittish horse over the Shire with tank like agility.
Dragon Noodles agreed. The horses I’ve always owned or ridden have been 14 to 15 hands. Right now I can’t afford my own horse so I’ve been riding with a friend...and she’s got a warmblood. He’s 17.1 hands and I need a small three step ladder to mount him. God help me if I ever fall off or need to dismount on the trail, I’ll never be able to get back on!!!
@@Astarionsbhaalspawn I ride recreationally so I don't have my own horse but I've ridden a fair amount of horses to prefer smaller horses. The smallest one I rode must have been 150 cm (or 15hands, we don't use hands to measure horses here), I think it was some Arabian cross. The horses I commonly ride at the riding school are roughly 170cm or 17 hands and the tallest horse I've ridden must have been 180 to 190 cm tall (18 to 19 hands). Even with a mounting block it's very difficult to get on him, fortunately he doesn't mind my struggles. A horse I adore at the school is looks to be 15 or 16 hands, and he's joy to ride. He's a Swedish Warmblood with some Selle Francais blood (french jumper) and his trot and canter are super easy to sit in. Seeing Arthur ride Shires also hurts my hip bones, lol. Don't think it's comfortable to ride on such a broad back either.
@@Astarionsbhaalspawn i taught a super tall horse i used to work with to bow :) that way, i can hop right back on but also sometimes when you fall off on a trail ride, the sheer shock and adrenaline really make it easier to climb back without much issue.
Pretty much my only problem with this otherwise unbelievably amazing game is that there is not a quarter horse. They were sometimes referred to as “Steeldusts” after one of the first great sires of the breed at this time but I feel like the horse that literally carried cowboys and settlers across the west should have been in in Red Dead 2
I use the Raven Black Shire for Arthur, his name was Edgar Allan Poe. For John and myt online character, I have a Light Gray Shire named Arthur, in honor of such a good boah
Medium horses are typically the best ones; they have a good balance of speed & handling as well as fortitude. Also, they just look more natural for Arthur to ride on. I really loved the Raven Black Shire, but it felt somewhat awkward to sit on a horse as high as The Mountain from GoT.
Mustang may be small, but what a fantastic horse. My Mustang isn’t just brave, it’s downright mean. He’ll try to stomp wolves and small predators like snakes, and he stands his ground against cougars, gators and bullets. Great horse for story mode or online.
Thanks Danelie, this is still useful 2 years later! Your videos are Awesome and your voice is great to listen to. It would be great to compare the sizes of the role-based horses from RDO... Criollo, Kladruber and Norfolk Roadster. Too much to ask I guess! :)

I have had many Hungarian half-bred horses, and they're good to take a few bullets, but they whine too much. I currently have a level 4 bonded Andalusian and he'll take just as many shots, but he's way less skittish. I fought off 4 wolves, surrounded no less than 6 feet or so, and he didn't even raise his front feet an inch. I wasn't worried about being tossed at all.
Astral Eagle I’ve had the opposite experience. I found the Andalusian just as skittish as a thoroughbred or Standardbred. My Hungarians (I now have three in case of death) are the bravest horses I’ve had. I can trample wolves and chase black bears, and combat is no problem!
Andalusien Dark bay in my experience. It shares the same stats with the halfbred but seems more courages than any other horse. The blood bay Thouroughbred is faster and has better (race) handling, takes way less damage though especially in the first 3 bonding tiers. Hunting is possible but don't dare to get too close to a cougar or grizzly. All in all the Andalusian is my favorite horse of them all. You can handle it in every situation, it's reliable and tanky from the get go, and even should you need to flee or race its there for you. I played the whole story with it and can't complain about at all
@@Astarionsbhaalspawn I still have a Half-bred because I like taller horses, but I suppose I've had good luck with the Andalusian since the courage stat may be an RNG, based on a percentage chance.
I liked it too until I started not liking how thin they were. Plus, the Turkoman becomes available in chapter 4. Not willing to wait that long for a good horse, so I went with the Chocolate Roan Dutch Warmblood. Come to find out it's really brave, strong and the stats are almost as good as a Turkoman's. Thank you so much for this comparison, must have been very time consuming getting them all and having them hold still for a good shot. Nice try with the walker ;-) we all know it's greater than it looks. If I may I'd ask you to please make an episode about bonding. I found various differences in courage/ discipline, loyalty, bonding time and simply the way horses listen to commands based on how you obtained the horse. For example bought or tamed horses are more simple to command and train, while stolen horses seem to have difficulty obeying and bonding with a new owner ( no bonding buffs through won horse races considered). Also stolen or newly tamed horses get skittish far easier. Even the old blind man told me to be careful with stolen horses. All in all it is not a huge difference, but just like your speed comparison it makes a difference in the long run or especially in heated gun fights. Many thanks, and keep up the good work.
I’m more of a taller horse kind of person. That’s why the Turkoman and Thoroughbred were my favorite breeds to ride. I always thought that Arthur looked really weird on smaller horses so I always got the bigger ones.
I know people generally love Hosea's mission Shire for Arthur, but for me it was the fully black Standardbred. Found him randomly in the Big Valley and thought it was a gorgeous horse. RIP my favorite boah
My current favourite horse breed in-game is the Thoroughbred, specifically the blood bay. Arthur fits perfectly on him, and he reminds me of Joey from War Horse. I love the daintiness of the Arabians, though, even if Arthur is a bit too big for them.
Incubus Contreras SAME I swapped horses a reasonable bit - and I gotta say somehow I was already rising the white Arabian when the horse would need to bear two riders. Arthur already looked silly. Add another and the horse just looks so overloaded.
I really wish that the creator would redo this video, with all the role horses in it as well. I keep coming back to this video, and have watched it over and over again.
I get that bigger horse is "better" because they can tank a lot more. But the again I use fastest horse because horses can't die permanently anyway *Unless you don't have insurance*
I kept the Shire that Hosea gave me .... And don't even get me started on how many people has that extra large horse ran over and killed in sanit Denis but I still love him
I'm sorry it was such a pain to make. I'm new to the game, and the size of prospective horses has been an important consideration for me, as I figure that a smaller horse is likely to catch less bullets and also have an advantage navigating tight spaces. I began wondering about how to judge this after I bought a Morgan in the early game when Hosea takes Arthur to the stable, and found I rather liked it when I expected not to. Especially by comparison to Tennessee Walker, which I did not care for. So thanks for taking the trouble!
I had no idea that the Mustang's smaller than the Kentucky Saddler and Tennessee Walker while I was really surprised that Turkomans are classified as medium-sized horses. In any case thnx for the anazing work you've put in to craft another informative video!
Rockstar should make it so you can own more than 5 horses, like- what if you could store 3-4 horses per stable and the only downside is that to access a certain horse you’d have to travel to that exact stable you left it in to retrieve it. I wouldn’t even care if there was a stable fee or something, I just want to keep my boahs!
I love the way Kentucky Saddlers are because they aren't too big and aren't too small. I love Thoroughbreds too, though. They're large but they're lean like an actual racehorse.
One of the strangest things about rdr2 is how small they made the belgian horse. In real life those horses are fucking massive. They should have the bulk of the ardennes and the height of the shire
I feel like the Morgan and Arabians are about maybe 14.2 14,3 while American paint, nakota, Appaloosa, and such are around 15.1-15.3 for medium they’re about the same as well. For thoroughbred, the taller looking horses, they’re definitely about 16.3 and the shire is probably 17.2-17.3
That's why I am not a huge fan of a mustang or an arabian because of their small size but they're great horses. For my first gameplay I used the black shire because I thought it looked amazing given its size but never really realized how hard it was to control, but definitely felt faster than other shires for some reason. And then later I got a Missouri fox trotter and Turkoman for my second gameplay as arthur and man those horses felt real nice. I'd say those two were the best in the entire game
You guys know that one American Paint you spot on strangers campsites? The black and white with bright blue eyes? That one. I was hunting in the Bajou at night when it appeared right out of the gloomy fog like a fucking ghost. It was magical. Truth be told, it belonged to a campsite I had overlooked and the owner wasn't too thrilled about me taking it. But that was my horse for my first playthrough. Never thought I could feel so much for something in a Video Game.
The Andalusians are one of my favorites, they aren’t the fastest but they are so beautiful and they have pretty big necks which for a horse is good. I know of only 2 coats, the perlino and the blood bay I think. You can find the perlino one in the wild (like you can find the white Arabian) it’s located where the quest with Jim boy Calloway (in chapter 4 I think) where you collect all the gunslingers and where he dies. It’s not very fast but it’s beautiful, look it up if you would like more information on it 😅
Its true, your horse 'stats' don't really matter at all. Just pick the horse that you like. The only time the stats matter is during some of the Horseman challenges like 3, 6 and 9 in which a faster horse makes them a bit easier.

@@dragonnoodles7487 how tall are you?
@@Astarionsbhaalspawn i taught a super tall horse i used to work with to bow :) that way, i can hop right back on
but also sometimes when you fall off on a trail ride, the sheer shock and adrenaline really make it easier to climb back without much issue.
I haven't owned one, but enjoy the American Paint as an occasional ride. Just feels very nimble, like I could thread a needle on it.
I don’t know why but I always just stick to the first one you find at Adlers ranch.
At first I thought it was going to be measured by hands 🤣🤣🤣
Same
That’d be a lot of hands
@@soap4797 well the average horse is 15-16 hands so not really 😂
Lucky Shetlands YOUD HAVE TO HAVE SUCH BIG HANDS-
@@soap4797 nah
The Turkoman seemed slight taller that most of the medium sized. Best horse in the game to my the Dark Bay that is.
You're a legend! Thank you for making this video!!
I use the dapple dark grey Hungarian half breed you get from the first bounty mission, Love you Dead Sea ❤️❤️
My equine science class was cancelled for today. Guess I'll watch this super scientific (and super calming) Daneliecasts video to make up for it 😁
Buell is still my favorite Horse love him followed by the Foxtrotter i wish they bring some more breeds with a dlc like the Friese horse
Buell

Medium horses are typically the best ones; they have a good balance of speed & handling as well as fortitude. Also, they just look more natural for Arthur to ride on. I really loved the Raven Black Shire, but it felt somewhat awkward to sit on a horse as high as The Mountain from GoT.
I love the Dutch warm blood, they are so big I love it
Mustang may be small, but what a fantastic horse. My Mustang isn’t just brave, it’s downright mean. He’ll try to stomp wolves and small predators like snakes, and he stands his ground against cougars, gators and bullets. Great horse for story mode or online.
Mustangs are totally underrated. They've got some bulk to them, they're one of only 3 multi-class horses (including the War class), and they're FREE.
@@storminmay not free online. My mustang cost 16 gold.
It's too bad that Mustangs and Nokotas are small but who cares--they're still beautiful horses.
LethalSaliva my 2 favourite breeds!
This was nice. Glad that I know who's who on the size chart. Comparisons on speed, agility, bravery and health would be super helpful too!
Jeez this makes me love my Shire even more xD
Thanks Danelie, this is still useful 2 years later! Your videos are Awesome and your voice is great to listen to.
It would be great to compare the sizes of the role-based horses from RDO... Criollo, Kladruber and Norfolk Roadster. Too much to ask I guess! :)
I was hoping someone would make a height comparison. Thank you for this!
My favorite is definitely the Dutch Warmblood. Tall and lean. He looks so badass on it.
Can we please take a moment to thank Daneliecasts for this wonderful quality content?
Wow it's really refreshing to see somebody make content that's unique and not just a remake of somebody else's video that's a remake of somebody else's video all to cash in on that sweet sweet Red Dead Redemption 2 viewing ¢/$ lol I know this is 3 years old but still I just started playing not too long ago and after a few Google searches my entire RUclips feed is now Red Dead Redemption 2 lol I look forward to seeing what else you have come up with
Many thanks for all that work, will save this video forever, I dont like small horses and this is very important for me, I want so badly to have more than 5, PLEASEEEEE
Shire’s are so badass. It’s like riding a Rhino. Cool when you can get some tramplings too
Which one is better: Hungarian halfbred flaxen chestnut or Andalusian dark bay?
I can trample wolves and chase black bears, and combat is no problem!
and instead the thoroughbred Blood Bay as it is compared to the other two?
Great video. I love that there isnt any extra dialogue and its exactly what you said it is. A size comparison
The first really good horse I got in rdr2 was my Golden Turkoman which I named Nugget.
The speed is bit lacking but only by a bit. It's now my favorite.
@@Smasho8000 the chocolate roan is criminally underrated, so far the only people I’ve seen use it in a play through are Fizhy and Embear
@@keknov5555 Yeah, it really is a hidden gem of a horse. I named my girl Nightshade. Once I got to the epilogue, I started missing her. Buell's great but Nightshade is special to me.
@@Smasho8000 yeah my horse was special, I loved her too much. I named her Epona after links horse in the legend of Zelda. I love my silver dapple pinto a lot but she just doesn’t compare
Me: Huh, this is cool.
That one dude in the background aggressively: *Mornin'!*
I love my big ass shire, i was riding her online and a friend called her majestic when i rode up lol
Personally I love the Shire, I have ridden one in real life before and it's amazing such a huge beast can be gentle and happily trot where ever you wanna go. And everyone and everything gets out of the way very quickly. :3
I started off with the Ardennes being my favorite ...then I used a Dutch Warmblood for a long time but yesterday I tamed a Mustang and there's just something about it , idk why but it's now my go-to horse. Just bought this game a few days ago so I'm really late to the party lol
My Top 3/Faves that I've owned :
Mustang ( Grullo Dun )
Andalusian ( Dark Bay )
Dutch Warmblood ( Chocolate Roan )
Ken Guidry Nice. I remember playing this game for the first time and exploring all the different horses. I wish I could forget everything and play this game for the first time again.
@@supahhotnoodledapx1602 Sometimes I don't even really do the missions (I know how the game ends) so I'm honestly just having fun hunting and just being on my own ...I haven't been back to Camp in days lol
Ken Guidry lol. I have played through the games story 4 times. Haven’t even tried online
@@supahhotnoodledapx1602 that's how you know it's such a good game lol ..hey does Blackwater eventually open up? Or does it stay "Wanted Dead or Alive"
Ken Guidry Take your time. In my second playthrough I regretted rushing the missions. The story gets REALLY instense.
I was a little disappointed by this not being a long line of horses but that little "thanks for watching" got the video back up to a well deserved like. Great content
Neeeeed a review on the three new horses in RDO from the Summer Update! :DDD
I've got the black Kladruber and it's a decent horse for low ranks. A little slow but amazing health and stamina!
I don’t care about my horse stats i jump off cliffs with them
You sir are....one of a kind
Thanks so much for filming in the same location! Really helps to compare horses size!
I have an ardenne dark bay coat and it's abit bigger and most standard horses and small to shire horses 😶thanks for the info
Andalusian? Ardennes have bay roan and strawberry roan coats
I’m more of a taller horse kind of person. That’s why the Turkoman and Thoroughbred were my favorite breeds to ride. I always thought that Arthur looked really weird on smaller horses so I always got the bigger ones.
Bill's horse > any other horse in the game
Iron grey is awesome too
I think Bill’s horse is a shire or andrennes
@@abdullahgaming1271 yeah it’s a brown roan Ardennes, which are one of my favorite horse breeds
I know people generally love Hosea's mission Shire for Arthur, but for me it was the fully black Standardbred. Found him randomly in the Big Valley and thought it was a gorgeous horse.
RIP my favorite boah
Best Horse is the gray Arabian you can find him in Blackwater
My current favourite horse breed in-game is the Thoroughbred, specifically the blood bay. Arthur fits perfectly on him, and he reminds me of Joey from War Horse. I love the daintiness of the Arabians, though, even if Arthur is a bit too big for them.
I always feel bad loading up the Arabian
Incubus Contreras SAME
I swapped horses a reasonable bit - and I gotta say somehow I was already rising the white Arabian when the horse would need to bear two riders. Arthur already looked silly. Add another and the horse just looks so overloaded.
Your vids help me learn about all the breeds of horses in the
game
From time to time a glitch would happen that made my shire the size of a arabian it was ridiculous and frustrating
Oof
Thabk you for this so much. Ive barley started playing and so far im liking the terkamin. Ive been looking for a vid like yours. Thanks again!!
Please! Review the new Horses added to Rdr2 Online! 3 new breeds, several coats.
I really wish that the creator would redo this video, with all the role horses in it as well. I keep coming back to this video, and have watched it over and over again.
I get that bigger horse is "better" because they can tank a lot more.
But the again I use fastest horse because horses can't die permanently anyway
*Unless you don't have insurance*
Even without insurance your horse can't permanently die. Just gets put out of action until vet bill is paid.

I kept the Shire that Hosea gave me .... And don't even get me started on how many people has that extra large horse ran over and killed in sanit Denis but I still love him
Thank you for taking the time to make this video, God bless and stay safe
im sticking with the ch1 horse with arthur so the thank you when it dies feels more sincere and also i love the look of ot
Great video as always! Just started story mode over again and have been riding the Dapple Dark Grey Hungarian Halfbred. Pretty good horse.
I absolutely love the Turkoman and the Dutch Warmblood
Thoroughbred and dutch warmbloods are my favourite..💪
I love the way Kentucky Saddlers are because they aren't too big and aren't too small. I love Thoroughbreds too, though. They're large but they're lean like an actual racehorse.
One of the strangest things about rdr2 is how small they made the belgian horse. In real life those horses are fucking massive. They should have the bulk of the ardennes and the height of the shire
I feel like the Morgan and Arabians are about maybe 14.2 14,3 while American paint, nakota, Appaloosa, and such are around 15.1-15.3 for medium they’re about the same as well. For thoroughbred, the taller looking horses, they’re definitely about 16.3 and the shire is probably 17.2-17.3
dalibora shadowheart Nakota is my favourite ✨😊 does the nakota look more like 14.2h to you or 15ish h ?
i love shires, some of them are slower but their size is perfect, arabians are fast and awesome, but i feel like i'm riding a pony ngl 😭😭
R.i.p Buelle the goodest Boi ever.

I'd say those two were the best in the entire game
morgans really said “DANGIT, WHY IS BILLY BIGGER THEN ME?!”
Another great video from one of my favourite creators.
This is exactly what I was looking for and very well done! Thank you!!
Thanks a lot for this video, it was the thing I was looking for 🔥
I love this channel
I love the Shire horse. Even kept the one Arthur got in story mode. Really wish they’d release the black coat Shire for Online it’s a beautiful horse.
It’s not very fast but it’s beautiful, look it up if you would like more information on it 😅
I always use the turkoman. Great looking horse and with good stats aswell
Its true, your horse 'stats' don't really matter at all. Just pick the horse that you like. The only time the stats matter is during some of the Horseman challenges like 3, 6 and 9 in which a faster horse makes them a bit easier.
