I've owned two Datsun 510 wagons in my life (and still have a 510 2 door). The 2 and 4 door Datsun 510's have the semi trailing arm independent rear suspension. The wagons have the solid rear. axle as you noticed. All have a common front suspension. The 68/69 510's had a different dash and 68's had Howdy Doody wipers. My guess is yours is is a 70-72. the 73's had big chunks of rubber on the bumpers. That car has a LOT of rust. Hope you are able to fulfill this dream. Take care of your wife and baby. They are more precious than any car or engine.

A friend of mine in Lake Havasu AZ had one of these outboards in a 21' Eliminator. It was a blast capable of 90-95knots with the two of us in it. The engine sounded like a V12 car engine when warming it up. We could burn 40 gallons of fuel in one hour if we had a heavy right foot.
@@dkjens0705 its obvious this kid was born this century, and doesn't even know what a "lead foot" means, which is applicable to anything with a throttle.
As someone who works out in the heat in the sun all day one thing I can tell you is a great thing to add to your wardrobe is a moisture wicking sports tank top. Tight-fitting polybase tank top that's made to taking sweat and evaporate it. Where does an undershirt and it'll keep your overshirt dry. And then whenever you're hot if you take your over shirt off and stand in front of a fan it'll help cool you down quicker
Hi I’m Grant from Australia Just discovered your channel have gone back and started watching the mustang build such a n inspiration watching you fix the old mustang. I’m currently building a 1971 xy falcon and have been struggling with motivation the amount of work you’ve put into it is amazing. Keep up the fantastic work.
I had a 71 model Datsun pickup truck with a 289 ford engine & automatic transmission in it when I was a teenager. Looking at the grill of that car it's very similar to what my pickup looked like. We cut a lot of the transmission tunnel out at the firewall and rebuilt it with sheet metal to have room for the engine and bell housing to fit. It was a good driving powerful little pickup truck.
Thats so cool. A boat motor! My brother put a jet engine in my moms car, and the chicks really dig him. Blonde ones, with big ole mammory glands on them too! I'm going to watch more of your videos. I like that silver car too.
Great channel! In Australia we call this model the Datsun 1600, very rare in a wagon here.,Usually only a four door sedan. Very popular in the 70s as a rally car. It will be awesome with a 2stroke v8. I can’t wait to see more.
My 510 had more rust than that, you'll do fine. Just start replacing sections bit by bit. Great motor swap, I've been waiting for someone to try this. Homebuilt by jeff does tons of panel patching on his channel. good way to do it
I had no idea there are V8 two strokes out there LOL. I'd imagine that the torque on those things must be crazy! But I guess I'll never know except through this video. Thank you! I think those are the wrong seats for it but I'm not there to say for sure.
How are you going to do the cooling system? in the outboard config the waste water goes into the exhaust to keep it cool & also muffle it. But if you do not have water going in there the aluminium exhaust will melt?
I owned a couple of the 510's in NZ, one being a left-hand drive wagon imported from Canada. I sold it to a Japanese guy who exported it back to Japan. Here, we drive on the "wrong"side of the road, but I got my license in NZ in my Dad's '72 Chev Concours wagon he brought back from Illinois. Anyhoo, as I believe is said in Canada, the 510 was/is a great car. I'd have another one anytime. Waiting to see what you create!
Get ready to do a TON of machine work because making the Evinrude V8 work in an automotive world you will need a lot of custom parts for cooling, transmission mounting, induction etc. I know a guy who used the same engine in off road buggy racing and the amount of machine work and one off parts was insane.
I probably would’ve started with a running motor. I know they’re expensive AF, but in some places 2 strokes are banned and you can pick them up for pennies on the dollar from a junkyard or a boat shop that retrofits new motors onto old boats. Bet you could even get some for free.
Funny. My Canadian wagon had a fiberglass replacement hood. Those old Datsuns sure knew how to rust! Cool cars, especially the sedan with IRS. Rockets in their time, and handled well compared to most of the other cars on the road, and they were light, so a decent running one, (as they generally were with the L16 chain drive OHC), could give a Fiat 125 a bit of a battle. This I know, because I had one of those too. Mind you, the Fiat was a twin-cam, and it sounded way better. Again, I regret not keeping it.
Datsun would be awesome project but I wouldn’t put that boat anchor in it I would do a k24 in it or some sort of modern Toyota 4cyl turbo in it would be dope
If you ever swap out your drive-train for something beefier in the future those stock/retro Datsun alloy wheels will get you a good amount of money from other people also building up a Datsun 510 or car with similar lug pattern. I've seen one of those Evinrude V8's here on YT used in a sand rail but since I'm not a boat person I've never seen one in person. Also, as someone from a rust-belt state I will say your Datsun would fall under a rating of 1.5 or a 2 at most, it looks rather solid. The rotted rocker panels and holes in the fenders are minor rust damage for us. Of course I don't know the condition of your floorboards or the cars frame. If those are fine with just surface rust then rot in the rockers and fenders just tend to be minor damage. :)
Back in the day a race team put a 2 smoke boat engine in a off-road race car and it was nearly impossible to drive due to the power band and it had heating issues.
I love this. Did you choose this engine specifically? Or just grab the first V8 outboard that you saw on the classified? How high does it rev? When you pull this off, you will be one of very few.
You need to start planning on the expansion chamber exhaust! It will add power and dictate what type of power curve it has ! This thing is going to be amazing!!
The 510 wiped the floor with BMW in racing and was considered the everyday man’s sports sedan. One more reason these are so cool. This swap made me subscribe.
Freaking awesome idea Big 2 stork outboard gonna rip And sound super cool you could make a bunch of little Mini expansion chamber Header tubes Outboard Engines are expensive Imagine getting one With a trash lower for cheap like a 350 horseSomething I have heard of never thought of you got a new subscriber We'll see how it turns out but I think it's genius
You went to Jacksonville FLORIDA to get this? What street were you on? Like any city, Jacksonville has sketchy areas, but by and large it is a pretty nice city. I'm thinking you were on the north/west side of town in some crackville spot. Also I had some friends who built a dragster with a 3.5L OMC F1 V8 with expansion chambers. It was cool, but I never saw it run right. They were trying to do it with an old Haltech E6 ECU.
Down in Smarr Georgia, Monroe County, I flew one of these off of 109 ft cliff and landed upside down in a beaver pond. Will it was a 1975 Datsun 710 station wagon, it looked like this but it was a little bigger with a 4 liter straight-six in it.
As a Toyota technician we used to have to go to Jacksonville port because Toyota used to conduct their advanced level training there. You were warned in no uncertain terms that one the class was over in the afternoons you were to go straight to your motel room and stay there until the next morning. Numerous technicians went there for training and thought they could experience Jacksonville’s nightlife only to get beaten up, robbed or stabbed. I’m sure there are high- end sections of Jacksonville that are not bad but working people never see those areas. I have a concealed carry permit and I never do a FB Marketplace deal without carrying and I personally won’t meet at a person’s house if I don’t know them or at least know of them.
You might do well to get a factory service manual for this motor. It will remove a lot of the mystery about the wiring for you. I was project engineer on that motor back in 1990.
You got my sub and notifications on now. I always wanted to put a big 2 stroke outboard in an MG, or a Triumph Spitfire! A Datsun is cool though 👍love the idea.
Fun fact: both Lynyrd Skynyrd and Fred Durst were from Jacksonville. Well you're obviously a Young Sheldon fan. The bottom section is the transmission housing and the drive that takes it 90 to turn the prop bolts to that. Obviously the guy stripped the guts out of it because there should be a shaft and exhaust pipe and shifter lever and all sorts of stuff in it. I wonder how much power that thing made from the factory and how much more it'd make with some expansion chambers on it.
I’ve watched the videos of out of the states with the 8 expansion pipes on the track looked like it was fast I wait to see what you do as far as transmission and how are you going to run that collector to 4barrel carb?
I love it , but my worry is this two stroke is ment to run on its end , ie outboard style , even if it runs oil injection there are oil drain holes inside the crankcase designed so excessive oil is gravity fed to engine bareings and piston skirts to oil them , when you turn the engine 90 deg. Now those oil holes are laying sideways and no oil will get to moving parts in large enough amounts for the engine to last long ?
That little wagon is basically the brother to my Opel sport wagon, same wheel base and track width and all. Only difference was yours was a little lighter when new but probably a lot lighter now with all the rust😂. Im going to use eithe an Atlas 2900/ 4l60, a K24/th350/400 or either a Fusion 2.5/6r80. Whichever i decide to use it will be turbo and 400+whp, it will be a daily and may hit the 1/8 mile with it a few times since it will weigh less than stock at 2450lbs. The original Opel engine was a 1.9 all iron and the K24/th400 is 90lbs less than the 1.9/auto so that leaves room for turbo weight to be added and still lighter
Wow, its crazy how he says that Jacksonville is the craziest place and never wants to go back but he only went to one place in Jacksonville. I can assure you that all of Jacksonville is not like that.
What is the outboard engine manufacturer ? It appears to be a Johnson, or Evanrude ? I am having to watch your video in bits and pieces due to my work schedule. So I am still in the very early stages of your disassembly process !
I would love to but with the engine being laid down made it too difficult to reroute all 8. On Tuesday episode 2 will drop with the custom intake I just made.
I watched all of your 2 stroke videos. Something hit me about the switch that may save you a lot of work & money in the long run. The air fuel mixture on a 2 stroke is actually sucked into the crankcase first " that is how the oil/ fuel/oil mixture lubricates the internally. The air/fuel/oil mixture then is sucked/pushed into the combustion chamber. My question is" If the air/fuel/oil mixture has to go through the crankcase first. "Wouldn't individual injector per cylinder be a lot of extra work without any benefits?" I am no 2 stroke expert & I don't know for sure but I am thinking you will need reed valves in the intake to keep compression from reentering the intake chambers. Does that make sense? Please let me know if you found this helpful
Depending on his setup, he will need reed valves. And he has to time his injectors to fire when the reed valves are open. IMO it would have been MUCH more easy to just keep the carbs. (or get a refurbished set of carbs) You've mentioned sucking/pushing the fuel into the cylinders. This is correct. And some of the fuel, will also end up in the exhaust, due to 2-stroke. (both intake and exhaust being open at the same time) As others have already mentioned, many 2-stroke outboard engines can benefit big-time from an "expansion chamber" in the exhaust. This will bounce the exhaust gasses around, improving fuel economy and performance. (more fuel/air will be pushed inside the cylinder and less will "leak out")
Thanks for the follow! The video of me fabricating an intake for the engine is coming tomorrow. This is definitely taking a lot of thought and fabrication but I am excited to make it work
Are you actually going to do this? Looks like you got some parts support from pooparrow5......I would love to see that datsun run with that rude engine for sure! I think you can still get parts for that engine through Johnson as well........I wonder if you are going to use the original transmission or do a salsberry clutch set up? Cool project! good luck!!!
The Intake fabrication video for the engine is scheduled for later today! I post events on our Facebook group so everyone stays updated on video times. Please feel free to join!
My aunt had one of these wagons that was a Japanese home market car that came with a Fairlady engine. Unfortunately it had an automatic so it was still anemic.
PUT EXPANSION CHAMBERS ON IT. YOU'LL PICK UP AROUND 75HP. YOU HAVE A LOT OF COOL THINGS SITTING AROUND!
Aircraft two strokes tended not to have- More torque? The Scott 500 two stroke has a straight pipe..
Looks to me like space might be an issue. Those chambers just about double the size of the v8

I am having to watch your video in bits and pieces due to my work schedule.
So I am still in the very early stages of your disassembly process !
The 510 2 and 4 door cars had IRS, and were called the poor man’s BMW. I like them better myself, but never found one to buy.
Is that an engine from an outboard?
keep those carburators! theyll make the engine sound so cool
I would love to but with the engine being laid down made it too difficult to reroute all 8. On Tuesday episode 2 will drop with the custom intake I just made.

If you were doing this to a 510 sedan I'd flip my shit but in the live axle wagon, fricken sick man.
(or get a refurbished set of carbs)
You've mentioned sucking/pushing the fuel into the cylinders. (more fuel/air will be pushed inside the cylinder and less will "leak out")
Look up "2 stroke V8 Rudezon" on here, it's the same engine in what looks like a drag car.
That's the car I learned to drive, in highschool!
That is one interesting project and worthy of a sub.
Thanks for the follow! The video of me fabricating an intake for the engine is coming tomorrow. This is definitely taking a lot of thought and fabrication but I am excited to make it work
It is helps, outside the US the 510 was known as a Datsun 1600
Are you actually going to do this? Looks like you got some parts support from pooparrow5......I would love to see that datsun run with that rude engine for sure!
I think you can still get parts for that engine through Johnson as well........I wonder if you are going to use the original transmission or do a salsberry clutch set up? Cool project! good luck!!!
here in pdx i saw a guy fighting his jacket hanging from a fence and it got a K O on him
It's got some nice 280ZX turbo rims on it.
Wow - Good luck !!!
Where the hell did you find one of these engines, I’ve been searching for YEARS
The estate (wagon) only came from factory with a solid non irs rear end.
H160 from memory
I've done a couple swaps, but that boat motor will present abnormal challenges. Good luck and where is part 2.
The Intake fabrication video for the engine is scheduled for later today! I post events on our Facebook group so everyone stays updated on video times. Please feel free to join!
I've been tryna get people on the old mercury high output swaps.
Sounds like Edmonton Alberta sorry you and your fam had to deal with that
My aunt had one of these wagons that was a Japanese home market car that came with a Fairlady engine. Unfortunately it had an automatic so it was still anemic.
