You hands down make the best videos I have seen by far. I really enjoy how in depth you are and how you are not making your videos just to sell products. I cannot wait to take your teachings to lakes this spring. Please keep making these teaching videos good sir I cannot stop watching them.
Ross Hilkemann Thanks Ross. I'm going to work hard to keep the instructional parts of my videos free from over the top promotion. Though you will start to see a few changes to the ends of my videos so I can incorporate sponsors.
Gene, Thanks a lot for the video... This was the video that help me to understand my navionics mapping when I got my new lowrance... The difference from knowing where to start and find fish was almost instantaneous instead of just going directly to the bank... Thanks a lot and keep doing this type of videos that really make a difference...
This is the first video I have watched on this channel… I became a subscriber only 4 min into the video. No one that I have seen has ever explained a topo map so clearly and completely . Just incredible!!!!!!! Thank you,sir for this video lesson! Will be a loyal subscriber for as long as your channel exists! Thank you again!!! Absolutely incredible!
I have always had problems understanding what those terms meant like flats, points and other terms you explained, even after watching other videos I was still confused. I watched your video once and with you drawing these terms to really show what they are, I understand these things completely now. Awesome video and I really appreciate the time you take to help us all out.
this is the best explanation I have ever seen for lake map reading. thank you for sharing I really am having a difficult time understanding my local lake map. but that is starting to change thank you sirDon
I can't thank you enough for making this video, the information here is extremely useful to me. I'll be watching it a few times before the ice melts here in Wisconsin.
Gene thanks so much for these informational videos. I have watched dozens and as a beginner lake fisherman I'm finding it hard to find fish, and I live 15 minutes from Clarks Hill so thats where I fish. Everyone is telling me fish points, but I never knew what I was looking for after piddling for a year I'm catching bass but they are small in size and it may be half dozen bag per outing. After watching all these different informational videos I'm going to apply it to my approaches and hopefully I'll be able to find more fish and sizeable fish! And tips would be greatly appreciated and keep the videos coming! Thanks!!!
I learned more form your videos. I better understand a topo map now. Could you do a video on where to located bass at different times of the year (seasons) and how to re3late it to a topo map? You make it simple to understand and don't advertise products. Thank you Tony
I've known how to read a topo map but I never truly knew what to look for when wanting to fish a lake, such as where the fish might be staging. Awesome awesome video! Thanks Gene, I'm learning TONS from your vids! Please keep them coming!
Can't begin to tell you how much your videos have helped me, this specifically. I think anglers forget that some of us are new and assume that we know what Flats and ledges mean. Struggled for the last year trying to fully understand. And now I feel as though I've got a pretty good grasp on it. Please keep the videos coming. Are you on GON? Do you ever guide?
I don't really have a favorite lure. If I'm having trouble catching fish I usually go to small worms on light tackle and then cover as much water as I can until I find them. Then I slow down and fish that area thoroughly.
Wow just an awesome video once again Gene! I've watched other videos and hear other anglers talk about flats, points, humps, etc and never had a clue what they were talking about. But this video explains a lot! Thank so much Gene!
Your welcome! I do have a question though. I'm a bank fisherman and most of the public fishing spots on my lake here in WI have huge flats with rocks and patches of weeds. I can feel them with my square bill when I'm fan casting and I can picture these structure when im burning my square bill. How would you fish these flats post spawn, depth is about 2-7ft. Every time I go out I would sometimes run my square bill, and bounce it off rocks, stir the bottom, sometimes up and over the weeds, and around. I'll get short strikes some times, like a surprise attack. Then no bites after I miss them. What would you recommend as a follow up bait? What would you have used as instead of a sq bill?
Been wanting to learn how to read lake maps for a while. Nice piece of instruction!!! Now I can study the local waters and pin the points I wanna fish in case I’m ever able to buy a boat….HaHa!! Dale Hollow and Lake Cumberland.
This is great stuff. As always, you speed up the learning curve. I was wondering if there was anyway that you would do a video where you dissect an actual lake map by the seasons showing an area that would be ideal for pre-spawn and spawning and summer and winter? Specifically, addressing the issues of: "here is an attractive spawning flat on a map, here is where the pre-spawn areas are to get to this spawning flat, here is where the fish using this spawning flat might summer and winter". The identification of these areas would be great, but some dialogue that explains why would be really helpful as well. Overall, this video is helpful and the additional would be really helpful. I have tried this on my own, but seeing you do this would help build some real confidence. Your videos are great and they are really helpful. I am a huge fan.
Ive watch all your videos and this one has to be the most helpful one for someone that doesnt have depth finder. And GREAT job on explaining all the different parts in the water. one question when you talked about the "hump" and the land between the two humps "Blow Through" where do wanna fish the Hump and the Blow Through?
Hey Gene great video I don't know what you have in mind for your next couple videos but I would recommend a " How to fish humps and creek channels" I've enjoyed both your point and ledge video and would like to see a similar one for the humps and channels. Thanks
Gene. Great video. I have read, studied and researched this subject ad nauseam. This is the best and most informative piece of information I have found. Great job and thank you!!!
Flukemaster Hey what's up Gene? Great video, just like all the rest. I was wondering if there was a specific site where you went to find the maps for where you fish? I'm trying to find some for the lakes around my area. Thanks man, and keep the videos coming brother!!
Flukemaster I have some questions from this video...Sorry if its a lot but I'm trying to learn and become a better fisherman. some of the terrain features you covered in the video on how to fish them but for the ones you didn't I asked you how do you fish it. Below are the questions. Points - Carolina Rig, Crankbaits, Jig, Spinnerbait Humps - How do you fish it ? Blow Through/Saddles - How do you fish it ? Creek Channels - How do you fish it ? Pocket/Cove - How do you fish it ? Flats - Crankbait, Spinnerbait, Carolina Rig, or something you can hit the stumps with Secondary Point - How do you fish it ? Bluff Wall - Dropshot or something like that Ledges - How do you fish it ? Road Bed - How do you fish it ?
what is your favorite lure/bait to use for bass. I have been trying to use the carolina/texas for some soft plastic but I am not having much luck. Any reccomendations you could give me? I am a newbie pretty much by the way lol.
Do you have any recommendations for websites or apps that have maps that show under water? Most topo maps just show a blue filling for water and only show the land topo lines.
Flukemaster, how do y o u find gps coordinates on the map that are not already marked? Say if I find a point near a flat that doesn't have any marked gps points. Can't I use a ruler or something to pinpoint where I want to start on that point?
was wondering if you would be willing to break down a map for me. I would be willing to mail it to you. I want to be able to identify every point every secondary point. any flats and saddles.i just would love to see what you see on the map and why. this would be a great learning experience. I'm still trying to understand where fish are holding structure lol. I fly fished for years and just followed a hatch chart and matched the hatch. but I haven't figured out how to match the hatch from this angle cause I'm using primarily large swim baits now. of course I see that bass are primarily feeding on shad and blue gill and I match those with my swim baits. any insight you could share with me is greatly appreciated. thank you sir for the educational videos.sincerelyDon greene

1st, thanks for serving our great country, 2nd - Great video. Thanks for taking the time to explain with the white board.
I have watched a few of your videos and all jokes aside, you need your own television show.
Thanks Michael. I really love what I do.
Excellent video! This will be a big help to me on my fishing trips this summer! Thank you for taking the time to make this!
This was extremely helpful! I hope you continue with these since I want to learn as much as possible about maps and the lakes I fish. Thanks!!
Thank you! All the time you spent educating us is much appreciated.

Inigo Montoya Thanks man.
It sure is. I guided him a few years ago and those are the two biggest bass he's ever caught.

How can you tell the difference between a hump and say a hole or round drop off? Depth increasing vs. Decreasing
The depth numbers are marked on the lines.
