    What I find hilarious is that if you guys were wearing bjj gi and presenting this without the context of kata, I doubt anyone would bat an eye. But since it’s karate, people immediately make absolute braindead comments like “stop the bs! Teaching this will get people killed!” Karate and realistic kata analysis/application can be highly efficient. It’s about how it’s learned, trained and applied.

    Interesting, Sensi Tsuneo Shimabukuro teach's it as a round house block in to in to a elbow. History wise Sensi says it's a jump away from a spear.

      Thank you for sharing, sir! I'm not trying to call anyone's teacher wrong or disagree with senior practitioners, just trying to show what this could do in a violent encounter where anything goes. Our organization's formal bunkai says this is jumping away from a sword swing to the legs. It's an answer, but I'm pretty confident that isn't the best answer.

    Seems...like a lot of hoops to jump through. Why don't you just elbow him in the face with the same hand you're using to defend his punch?
    You can actually beat him to the punch if you react as soon as he grabs (you have two free hands, throw a straight and hook).
    You can also just parry with your other side hand and throw an upper cut with the same side hand.
    You can also just bring your hands up to defend punches and knee him in the groin.

    • @andrewobrienkarate
      @andrewobrienkarate  Год назад +1

      You're right, there are a lot of options. But this is specifically about showing how the movements of the kata can help you to gain a dominant position quickly. With a couple steps, I've broken his balance, gotten a joint lock, moved behind him, and set him up for a knee to the spine and a broken shoulder. It's not the only one even the most efficient option. It's about unpacking the kata.

    • @jephilologist
      @jephilologist 11 месяцев назад +1

      Your options operate on the assumption that you can beat them to the punch/es. Self defense assumes you may have already began receiving punches.
      The opponent having control of your garment is the issue. Even if you can raise your hands to defend, they can jostle you around to break your defense or change your orientation- nullifying your defense. That is why you have to take it into grappling into a finish- not a stand-up game.
      The kata shows a way to gain control of their back, not clinch in return and start doing Muay Thai.

      Peut être. Et puis vous continuez à vous battre et ils ont perdu leur emprise. Je ne pense pas qu'un attaquant qui a l'intention de vous assommer en frappant encore et encore sacrifiera sa prise parce que vous commencez à vous déplacer d'une manière à laquelle il ne s'attend pas. Une fois le verrou enclenché, il est de toute façon trop tard pour lâcher prise. Merci d'avoir regardé!

    • @andrewobrienkarate
      @andrewobrienkarate  11 месяцев назад

      The chances of a violent encounter working like this long sequence of the kata over multiple steps is slim to none. That said, each piece is valid and has potential. People have asked "but why not just hammer fist him until he spits teeth once you tie him up?" Sure, that's an option. People have said "I don't think he's going to let you twist the arm like that." Sure, maybe it doesn't work or the guy slips out of it as it comes on. As I understand it, that's true of anything.
      I don't know about movie name. Do you have title ideas?

      Every call of duty keyboard warrior has an opinion on things when they don't even train.
      That said, the jump away with leg raise, was initially created as an evasive defense against an attack to one's lead leg with a weapon: sword, oar, spear, etc or a round house kick aimed at one's knee.
      Pre-WW2 Okinawan ryu kara te was developed during a time when Okinawans had to defend themselves from armed pirates, military invasions and criminals so we see weapon awareness in Uechi Ryu PanghaiNoon, Goju Ryu and Shorin Ryu.
      I'm glad you're keeping traditional Uechi Ryu alive. Peace be with you.
