On CIG attracting women into the game, a 2014 study showed that where an MMO encourages PvP then this leads to in-game activities such as craft and quest being pushed out and a predominantly male (90%) male player-base emerging. The study was investigating how machine learning could be used to find a player's real gender based on avatar gender and play-style. The study found that people tend to have an avatar that coincides with real gender and adopt play styles that fit gender stereotypes.

On pay-to-win, one point to consider is that anyone who wants to start in mining and salvaging from the get-go cannot buy a starter spaceship for those professions. The only way to enter those in-game professions immediately is to pay real cash for a Prospector or Vulture - or to buy even bigger ships like a Reclaimer with which to "grind down" to buy smaller ships in-game. Starter ships allow combat and cargo. Ship-based mining and salvage are not options in starter ships.
