    Do carrots make your eyes better? We have all heard that carrots are good for the eyes, right? Well I dug into the published science to find the truth and this video explains what I found.
    The whole belief that carrots are good for the eyes does have some scientific backing, but not for the reason people think. (It mostly has to do with WWII propaganda)
    Vitamin A plays a huge role in retinal processing to help you see better in low light situations, however carrots do not technically have vitamin A, carrots have Beta Carotene.
    Your body regulates conversion of Beta Carotene to vitamin A and then stores Vitamin A in your liver. The more carrots you eat, the less vitamin A is converted.
    I could not find any sources to show a dose dependent relationship of Vitamin A to visual acuity or night vision for normal healthy individuals (those who are not Vitamin A deficient).
    Despite all this, there is evidence to show that eating carrots provides antioxidants to your body and can slow down the rate of eye disease.

    When I was in my early 20’s I notice standing in front of a mirror that the iris of both eyes appeared dark (I have brown eyes’). I began eating raw carrot like Bug Bunny. I don’t remember exactly how long it took (less than four month), but the color of the iris of my eyes became the brightest brown I’d ever seen. Friends even commented about “something different with my eyes.”

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  2 года назад +6

      That is fascinating! While I know eating many carrots, including orange peppers etc, can change the color of your skin. I have never heard of the iris truly changing color. It is otherwise thought that the contrast ratio between clothes and the environment helps bring out different eye colors, perhaps your skin also changed and that brought out your eyes more?

    • @brian_abroad
      @brian_abroad 2 года назад +3

      Just to clarify, when I said, ‘I notice…the iris of both eyes appeared dark,’ that was because sometime in the past they weren’t as dark a brown. Eating carrots seemed to restore the vibrancy of my iris and to a greater extend than before. I had made assumptions based upon remembered variables so it is possible something else caused my iris to similarly had caused them to dim and similarly to brighten. After this experience I began noticing darkened iris in other people (maybe I should say dimmer). I was, however, an astute person with a very good memory, therefore, remembering the only major changes to my diet, environment, or dressing fashion was that I ate more carrots, and hoped for the very results I had achieved. [chuckles to self] I am amused that I, now, I am seemingly questioning myself about a conclusion made many years ago. Must be the older, more forgetful me speaking. Thank you for your reply.

    I have a question about dry eyes. After doing a warm compress to get the meibomian glands flowing, can you pinch your lids together to further excise what is in the gland? I’ve been doing it the past few weeks and so much “stuff” comes out that would not otherwise come out with eyelid massage. Is this damaging to the glands? I would like to keep doing it because I don’t think eyelid massage really gets much out but I don’t want to do it if it causes damage down the road.

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  2 года назад

      Thanks for sharing! Shadows around objects and letters could be so many things. If it is truly related to the new lenses, I immediately wonder about the level of astigmatism correction, as the cylinder correction can cause an almost doubling or shadow like effect. There could also be other aspects to the glasses such as the lens choice and thickness causing distortion or chromatic aberration. I suppose someone could adapt to it, but I personally don't think I would. Worth a try though.

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  2 года назад

    I have a question. I dont know if you would know, but whenever I put on my glasses, my right eye drifts outwards a little. it doesn’t effect my sight but it looks weird. I had surgery on my right eye when I was 1 because it would cross inwards towards my nose, so one of my eyes was cross-eyed. they had to cut the string things behind eyeballs because they were to tight so they pulled my eye in. now it does the opposite thing and goes out but only with my glasses. I have a really heavy prescription on my right eye cause the surgery caused that eye to be extremely blurry, even after 12 years. I cant read ANYTHING from that eye no matter how close or far it is, and my sense of placement is off so if I close my left eye and try to grab something infront of me, I would probably reach to anywhere but the fruit for a while. I’ve had glasses my entire life but I only started noticing it doing this with my new glasses that I got a few months ago, but they said my prescription was lighter and my eyes were better than last time.
    sorry this is so long!

    Do Carrots have Vitamin A and help our eyes? Do you see any rabbits with glasses???? LOL! Just kidding. Thank you for all the information about carrots. Another video briefly about carrots said if you eat too many Carrots they may change your skin color, but not sure about this. Take care.

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  2 года назад

      Thank you!!! Yes, in fact eating too many carrots or other pigmented vegetables (such as orange peppers) are known to cause the skin to turn yellow/orange. This is more apparent on the palms of your hands. Originally I had a bit in the video about this but it was cut because I ran onto a huge tangent about it and the video was long enough as it is lol. Perhaps I should have left it in.

    My mother used this “propaganda” to get me to eat cooked carrots. I love raw carrots but I hate cooked ones. I have really bad vision. When I was a kid I had to wear glass lenses in metal frames and I’m allergic to “metal” so she was able to convince me because I was so desperate to not wear my glasses.

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  2 года назад +2

      Oh dang. I know a lot of people can have allergic reactions to metal frames. Thankfully there are a lot of great plastic options and even special hypoallergenic metal materials now. Either way though, carrots at least provide a lot of antioxidant capabilities for the eyes, despite not getting rid of the need for glasses.

      My.husband has this metal problem and he was told the culprit is the nickel used as an alloy. Pure gold, for instance, is too soft by itself for jewelers to work with.

      And jewelers do work in 24k. Just not usually in the average shop. You need to go to a high end jewelers. 10k 14k 18k are used more often because the alloy is harder/stronger and lasts longer without deforming. Also it is cheaper

But with that in mind she said that anything you do to improve you overall health will also benefit your eye health and fasting was something she practiced herself as it was beneficial.
