- In this video, we tackle the task of leveling the uneven lawn with sand. My front yard is not perfectly level, so we are top dressing the lawn with sand to make it flat.

This will help to prevent scalp marks or scalping when mowing reel short with a reel mower. It is very important to top dress and level your lawn to have a flat smooth yard if you want to mow grass short with a reel mower. Ideally, the yard would have been perfectly level before the bermuda grass sod was laid down, but topdress topdressing is the next best thing to get rid of the uneven lawn.

I’m in the process of doing a sand leveling project at my house. Started a couple of weeks ago with 50 tons of sand. Learned not to dump the piles too close, because it doesn’t take as much as you’d think. Got another 50 tons to be delivered on Friday, so I can keep plowing along. Been lucky enough to not have to do any manual labor. It’s all been done with a small tractor and ZTR.

The drag you built is fine but if you weld some type of grading like chain link fence or expanded metal the weight of the channel iron would work a lot better spreading your soil or sand instead of compacting it causing you to make way to many passes to spread it.
What is the best sand to use on my Bermuda. This will be my first top dressing.

I love your channel! New subscriber here. I have a bermuda lawn with some low lying spots that are about an inch lower than the rest of the lawn. I am going to level soon with a sand. Should I just fill in the low lying areas? or should I spread sand everywhere and just put more in the dips?

If your lawn is pretty smooth other than some problem areas, you can spot level. 👍🏼

If you have a ride on mower or access to one they turn sharp drive slow and the back axle isn't locked. So when you're turning the inside tire don't chew when turning.

The Lawn Tools that’s not a bad idea......but yeah man just classic soil science stuff how the sand can affect your overall soil texture in terms of sand to silt to clay ratio, as well as CEC numbers and or how it might affect your pH which in turn is going to affect the diversity of your soil biology...I don’t mean to steer you down a rabbit hole or give you second thoughts by all means do your thing and rock it out I would just consider getting some microbe food down there ASAP....you dudes are super rad tho, just getting after stuff and having a BLAST with this whole thing as it should be....

Haha thanks! There are certain spreaders that do work with sand but not this cheap one. This process was pretty hard in that 4 wheeler. We moved up to a big John Deere for the back yard (that video is on the channel too)

I don’t know if beach sand would be good unless the shell pieces get sifted out. I used masonry sand. Some people use play sand. All that matters is that there are no rocks (or shells 😂)

Thanks! I got masonry sand. I got it from a place that pulls it out of the river. Construction supply places usually have it. I usually use whatever fertilizer I can get cheapest at Lowe’s that has a lot of nitrogen. No huge preference.
FYI the thing that defines sand is the size of the particles my understanding of masonry sand is 2-4mm
This size basically determines a few things.
Too big and it won't fit through a spreader if you use one.
It also importantly won't be as level. The finer the sand the smoother the surface if it's 4 mm you can basically have at most like 4mm roughness.
That doesn't Guarantee flatness by the way which is a different thing. Just that it's capable basically of being super flat if applied properly.
It also makes it easier to work down below the grass.
Too small can be a problem for staying in place.

Dont. Youll have concrete in a few months. You must use a loom mix.
Sure seems like you need a pretty level yard to actually level it! Try us in Ohio where we heave like crazy and have crass 3-4 inches thick. Not sure I can see this working in our area.

I know it at least works for Bermuda grass and Kentucky blue/rye mixed grass (see Conner ward and Brett Goodyear’s channel’s) but I don’t know about “all lawns”

this was river sand. it is pretty fine. the construction sand i've used personally for small areas was a bit chunkier with tiny pebbles throughout. don't like it as much. buying this in bulk was way cheaper for the quanity we used
I used sand on my Bermuda (clay soil) dragged it, leveled it, came out perfect. THEN! the first heavy rain came & I ended up chasing all that sand down the street! It’s not a one size fits all. This Spring I’ll use a sand, compost topsoil combo. 🤞
