UK's Annual Royal Swan Count Underway On River Thames

The annual count of swans belonging to King Charles III has begun on the River Thames. The five day event is known as 'swan upping' and dates back to the 12th century.
The count is carried out by swan markers who take to the river in skiffs to carry out their duties whilst crowds of well-wishers line the banks.
Swan upping might look like a throwback to a distant past, but it serves a vital role in monitoring the health of the birds.
