250. A new canal? That'll be £100 million, please

- Built in the late 1700s but abandoned in the mid-20th century, the Stroudwater Navigation and the Thames & Severn Canal are currently undergoing a mammoth, volunteer-led programme of restoration. This is their story.
For those curious about the video title, a Trow was the type of boat that used to sail up the River Severn and along the Stroudwater Navigation to unload at Stroud, so the title is a gentle play on the phrase "True Believers" and references the dedication of all the volunteers making this project happen.

A good way to raise money would be to sell paver bricks with people's names one them. You could raise money from around the world, and people could be a part of history.
That’s a popular method of fundraising here in the United States.
My local Foodbank did this to raise funds for a new building.

I wish they would do that. I think a lot of subscribers would donate.
With the growing interest in narrowboats and the canal system, NOW is a good time to keep this project rolling. Your 'bully pulpit' is a good place to help.

Having watched your recent non cruising episodes it must be obvious to all that you were the star reporter when you worked for TV.
An absolute joy to watch ... and subject not bad either 😁.
I was very much not the star at all, no-one had any appreciation for what I did not least because I was surrounded by far more talented colleagues (who were also under-appreciated by the Powers That Be)

Part of me misses your cruising videos, but when we receive such in depth documentaries as this, who would dare to complain? This is a daunting and complex venture, and it really does give an added appreciation for all of those wonderful volunteers!

I volunteered on the Thames and Severn restoration a couple of years ago for a week. Best "holiday" I've had in my life, properly good fun
Another great video that must have taken hours, days, even weeks to get it all organised and 'in the can' as it were. When it comes to interesting and educational videos David you are leading the field my friend.
To think that some of the volunteers will never see the canal complete in their life times, yet still put that time and effort into the project, makes me realise, that the civility of our nation is still very much intact despite all that has changed in the last 20 years or so. Thank you for your service to your local community’s and ultimately the nation as a whole.

Who needs mainstream tv when you’ve got videos like this. Really fascinating, and another good advert for progress being made via quiet volunteering, so rarely makes the news.
I loved that gorgeous new Brick built bridge, it looked superb and totally in the vernacular architecture of the original canal. Lovely work. It would have been so easy to go for a cheap concrete prefabricated bridge but instead they did a proper job. 🛥👋
I find that it’s in pieces like this, that your experience in the media industry shines through. The production and narration are exceptional, you forget you’re watching a RUclips channel.
His former work at ITV really makes the production quality shine in his corner of RUclips World. This is one of his best documentaries, cut nicely from start to finish with great narration and interesting guests. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This a fantastic piece of filming and editing. A joy to watch. This is what the BBC used to be for. A great example of how enthusiasm coupled with professional knowledge and talent can make an absolute mockery of conventional terrestrial tv.

@@CruisingTheCut I think you bring something unique that they don't have, you have the enthusiasts passion coupled with a deep understanding and sympathy for the subject. The corporatisation of life has pushed all the talented people out, but hopefully RUclips and other platforms might allow (a much more interesting) way back in.
@@CruisingTheCut you underestimate yourself, David. Much as I liked the old cruising vlogs, these documentaries are a whole step up. Very professional, but with a special personal touch that comes from your genuine interest in the subject and the fact that you are able to produce exactly what you want, and not have to consider the petty restrictions of commercial filmmakers/broadcasters. They should be watching these documentaries and asking themselves some serious questions - if he can produce programmes of such quality, singlehandedly and on a very limited budget, why can't we do something similar??

Fantastic film David, thank you. I live in Stroud and have watched this happen over the last 25 years - slowly at first but with increasing pace and it's inspiring to see.
When Stroud District Council bought the derelict Ebley Mill in the early 90s there was uproar in many quarters at the cost of restoration, but the council argued that it would kick-start the regeneration of the area (Ebley and Cainscross) and they've been proved right and in spades. This is what regenerative town planning looks like and the Council deserve praise for their vision. Add to that the incredible work done by the Trust on a ridiculously small budget and you have a project that's a joy to watch as it progresses.
The quality of the editing, narrative, photography, soundtrack etc. on this video is absolutely incredible. This is easily as good as anything you would see on the BBC - in fact it's much better, because the BBC would have to condense it down to three minutes. And all this was done by one man on his own, on a laptop, on a narrow boat! Absolutely incredible. My sincerest and warmest compliments. The pride you take in your work is recognised and appreciated.

i used to watch the excellent “cruising the cut “ and keep dropping back onto vlogs like this as they reappear ,the filming and narration makes it so watchable and informative David is such a competent presenter and so professional its an absolute delight just to sit back and take it all in .

Once this is complete, it will create a canal grand circular from London to Reading, Oxford, Lechlade, thence to Cirencester, Stroud, Gloucester, Worcester, Brum, Warwick, Braunston, MK, Watford and back to London, I reckon three or four weeks of solid cruising.

This is wonderful. Investing back into our heritage and our future at the same time. I'm sure this will bring much tourism to the area. My mate [who lives on a narrow boat] works for a company in Sowerby Bridge that rents out narrowboats to holidaymakers. I'm sure the same will happen here too.
Its beautiful to see the unsung heroes like the maintenance guys and shop workers showcased. The overall project is mammoth and deserves some recognition

Here in New Jersey there were a couple of canals which have over the years been abandoned. I live in one of the towns where the Morris Canal went through the very center of the town. I have examined old documents about the canal. Most of the land grant of the canal has been returned to municipalities and individual property owners. New Jersey is the most densely populated state. The original canal can never be restored. However, I would be interested in restoring the section through my municipal town. I believe that businesses like pubs and restaurants would spring up around the canal. Restoring a small portion of the canal seems possible. I was very interested in your "A new canal?"
That is some project,, I'm all for it too. It will make England so much more beautiful...
I walked the route of this filled-in canal with 3 other scouts back in the 1980s when I was 15 as part of my Chief Scouts Award. It took us 3 days from Lechlade to Gloucester and there was evidence of the old canal all along the route. A bridge in the middle of a field being the most obvious!

Brilliant introduction to a gigantic restoration that has overcome so much and has even more to conquer before they are done. I've watched it progress since 2006 when working in Stroud and I have every confidence that they will make it to Saul. Going East is on a different scale, not least because of Sapperton tunnel, but the people I have met do not understand the word 'impossible'.
Great video. Based on my door step. I live near Stroud. I remember going to view a new potential office in Cirencester. It was very old and apparently served as a bank for canal users. There is a popular pub called the The Tunnel House which sits next to the entrance/exit of The Sapperton Canal. At the other end there is another Public house called The Daneway (present day name). Which was constructed in 1784 by a canal contractor which was used for accommodation for the builders. It was then sold to become the Brickkayers Arms. The Sapperton Tunnel with a length of 3,817 yards was the longest canal tunnel from 1789 to 1811. The facade of the entrances are ornate and still intact to this day. Probably worth an episode pload in its own right. 👍

We live near the Chesterfield canal (Worksop) and we have a large section, 9 miles, which is missing! A housing estate was built on the land the canal travelled through and the Norwood tunnel collapsed. The canal then starts and is in use from the tunnel to the River Trent. Work is slow but I believe they are getting more funding towards the rebuild. They are looking at £2.1m.

I live in a small village along this canal called Chalford, my house in fact backs onto the derelict canal and the tow path alongside it. It was renowned to be leaky when operational and a lot of the water required to keep it operational was diverted from the River Frome which ran alongside it. This river provided the power needed for the mills that used to support the booming textile trade in the area. I look forward to it being re-developed however it's a large project. Patiently waiting for my chance to volunteer digging it back out :) great vid
