TO EVERYONE: If you watch the episode, we mention that many of the games we mention have had sequels in the past. There is no need to let us know that such-and-such had a sequel, as if to invalidate it's inclusion in the episode. We know. We want better and proper sequels. Thanks for understanding.
Okami is a beautiful game, its biggest flaw is that you feel like you’re reading more than you’re playing the game, every time Issun or anyone else talks to you it feels like it’s never going to end
Golden Axe, Waverace, Final Fight, Eternal Darkness, Skies of Arcadia and Altered Beast all need a proper sequel. Nice choices, as well, Joe and Dave. \,,/
It's funny that you mention that. No clue when a 3rd RPG episode might be, but I started playing Suikoden on the PS last night. I hadn't played it since I rented it for one night when it was brand new. I remembered a lot! There was that really nice guitar tune as we were all eating dinner near the beginning. I then remembered that there should be strings backing this guitar tune and that it wasn't on the OST release at all. Yup, the strings then came on!
FYI- You actually do NOT need the save game backup cart in order to play Shining Force CD Books 3&4. If you look in your save data in the system menu, you'll see two files, one that's 99 blocks, and one that's just 1 block. You need to delete the 99 block file, as that's your actual save file. The 1 block file keeps track of what you have completed. Also, if you just delete your game from within the game itself, it will make sure the right file is deleted. I have played all 4 books without having the save cart.
Working Designs didn't make games btw, they just translated them. At the time, they provided a decent English translation (albeit with flaws) with correct grammar and spelling in the days of conglaturation and all your base are belong to us (although I will say most of the voice actors they used were excellent). So that's why they seemed amazing at the time. By today's standards their translations are below average.
The boss is multi-jointed yes, but the rotating part is mode 7. The joints were all animated sprites. Mode 7 isn't a chip. And like I demonstrated the backgrounds are really a simple task that can be performed on any system of the time. They only expand in the vertical dimension. Super easy to do. Look at the Sonic example I showed.
Holy crap! You guys mentioned JJ & Jeff. I was the only kid ive ever known to this day to have played this game. One of my favorite games as a kid. Just amazing. Thanks for bringing this one to light
Anytime I've seen or conducted testing on the strength of other people's balls, or found myself in a situation where someone was testing the toughness of my "balls" as, it became readily apparent to me and the other researches that none of balls tested were very tough at all. However, I frequently hear Joe Redifer referring to games as being "tough as balls" and I wonder if it's possible his balls are abnormally tough like made of stone and he doesn't realize that it's a bad frame of reference to use in a conversation since his ball toughness is wildly disproportionate to that of the great pubic public at large.
I'm very happy you mentioned Golden Axe. My number 1 game that needs a sequel. Here are some more: Knightmare (MSX) Caveman Ninja Pop 'n' Twinbee Wonder Boy in Monsterland Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara Rastan Midnight Resistance Bubble Bobble Rainbow Islands Rolling Thunder Blue's Journey
I'd love to see a new Goonies game. Goonies 2 was one of my favorites on the NES and with all the hidden stuff and figuring out the different pathways and how all the doors connected, it took me weeks to finish on my first playthrough. I think a new game on the Virtual Console or Xbox Live Arcade would be amazing in the right hands.
Great episode guys. There are many old retro games that I'm playing now that I have totally missed out on as a kid. I guess being 31 has its advantages now that I can by my own games and not have to wait for my next birthday! Lol. Keep the episodes coming Joe and Dave!
I really wish you'd put the list of games in your episodes in the description of the video. Anyways, what games really need sequels are the Mystical Ninja/Goemon series (although there seem to have been a few more recent sequels, I haven't seen any in America), Snow Board Kids (from N64. I know they had 1 sequel on the DS, but I'd hardly call that a sequel because it was a piece of shit), and Bomberman 64/Bomberman the second attack (I know they have bomberman sequels that play more like the traditional bomberman games, but the style in Bomberman 64 and Bomberman the Second Attack was just so fun).
The bomberman series is done for thanks to trying to make it fit in with the new gen games. It also is on the Original XBox or a XBox 360 but that version sucked
Axelay’s “vertical” stages aren’t actually moving you to the center of the screen. You are always moving up but they actually scroll left and right too. That’s the horizontal scroll catching up. Because it’s scrolling the other things too, it doesn’t actually affect your precision. What does affect your precision is the rolling 3D effect where you may think you were in the right position to avoid something or thread the needle until you get closer, the object grows, and you realize that your position was not correct.
I am thinking they will. They seem to be big fans of the genre and they are making a new TMNT 2D beat'em up as well. I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to make a new Golden Axe too and i don't see a reason for SEGA to say no after SoR4.

Along with Road Rash.. Return Fire was my favourite 3DO game. I even bought the "Maps O Death" expansion thing... what an awesome game. I'm also a big fan of Locoroco. I still play them once in a while on my Vita. (i can't remember if bought them twice.. of if Sony was cool and just made them transferable from my PSP to Vita) Great video.
Who said the level 2 boss head was sprites? I certainly did not. It does not need to have black behind it. Instead it has a solid greenish brown. The "detail" you see in the background are all sprites. You can tell because when you fire your missiles, the detail flickers away occasionally. The overhead levels are simply scanline v-scroll adjustments (or raster-based stretching). It's the same exact effect shown on Sonic. I get my information from actual programmers, not old EGM mags.
earthbound, ristar, rocket knight, gex, shenmue, f zero, banjo and kazooey, shadowman, zombies ate my nieghbors, haunting starring poulterguy, and paperboy...............................................
Actually they had 8, 9 if you count the one in the Genesis. 11 if you count the redbook tracks. That was a developer choice, probably so the drums wouldn't interfere with whatever is being said aloud. Too many games don't have proper sound mixing, even these days.
I would love to see the Mega Man X series back on track. Just like they did 9 and 10 for the original seeries. I think the first Mega Man X game is perhaps the best Mega Man game ever done. X2 and X3 are also quite good but not as perfect. The music is mostly horrible in X3 for example. So a continue to X3 could be great!

The single player AI on Return Fire was broken, with unplayable maps. And every two player game ends in a draw if the losing person destroys the bridges. I agree that it has the basis of a good game, but would need a lot of work for a sequel.

In the case of Axelay, aside for the fact that one can just look at the coding, it was programmed by Hideo Ueda & Kazuhiko Ishida who also worked on Castlevania 4 and went on to form Treasure. Since Mode 7 can only rotate and scale backgrounds and not sprites, the result is a black backgrounds as seen with the Rock Boss in Castlevania IV. The Sonic Levels you referred to used Parallax Line Scroll Function. All this has been well documented. Just refer to your old EGMs and Game Fan Magazines
Jumping flash....It...It doesn't fall into the same problem most first-person platforming does. Most of the time, your feet are invisible, so you have little to no clue how you need to land on a platform....but Jumping flash fixes that!! Finally, someone who figured it out!! I can't wait to get into that amazing series, I'll bet it was so popular, and there was so many seq-- ...Wait, what's that you say? Only two games? ..... .....Damn.
In regard to your comment about mode 7 for the stages and the boss. First off, the boss isn't using mode 7. It's a multi-jointed sprite using software rotation. The mode 7 chip was used for manipulating the backgrounds in Axelay.
Firstly, Streets of Rage did sort of get sequels after SoR3. Fighting Force on the PS1, N64 & PC was originally going to be a 3D Streets of Rage title, but the name was changed. Secondly, Streets of Rage was also released on the Master System, so it definitely didn't only have Genesis releases.
God Hand, Haunting Ground, Madworld(Anarchy Reigns doesn't count), Phantom Dust, Vanquish and Gotcha Force. Oh and how could I forget Shadows of the Fucking Damned! All games that only have one game to their name that deserve sequels.
Okay, 1: In Axelay, on the vertical stages, your ship does NOT "Center itself", it moves faster than the camera, and the CAMERA follows the ship and centers ITSELF, this makes dodging obstacles a bit less challenging, IE your ship wont slide into the rocks near the later parts of the first stage, but the camera will still center itself. I never even noticed this until someone pointed it out. [But I will admit it can get a little strange feeling. And it DOES NEED A SEQUEL.] And 2, Locoroco maintains a childish tone and is kind of easy, as it was meant for younger players, the challenge comes from the secret levels and finding all the secrets in each stage. And indeed the voices ARE gibberish, this was done to make translation/regionalization so much easier, only the text needs to be translated, not the voice! This DRAMATICLY reduces production costs, making the Locoroco games cheap! So yeah, why don't they make a Sequel if the games are so cheap? Bad sales. They were released on a system nobody bought and ignored by the "hardcore gamers". If you were "Gamer" enough to buy a PSP, you were "Too Cool" to play a colorful game meant for a younger player. The Locoroco games are still wonderful. And I will proudly admit I have the soundtrack and listen to it all the time! Axelay and Locoroco badly need sequels. Gamesack, I really love you guys.
Mode 7 is a hardware feature on the chip allowing the SNES to scale and rotate a single background, not sprites. The Sega CD has the ability to rotate 2 independent backgrounds in addition to sprites. Sprite scaling and rotation on the SNES or Genesis is done through software coding and not hardware.
I'm glad you guys mentioned Shining Force! You've got no idea how many of the hours I should've been doing homework went into playing the first two games in that series. They really give you a sense of strategy and war better than other games like King's Bounty and Civilization could do at the time. Great inclusion and great video as always!
Chrystalis for the NES desperately needs a sequel. Action RPG with a really great story. The big hook was 4 elemental swords that you can power up with orbs and rings to unleash some real power. I still enjoy going back and playing it from time to time.
Commenting on ten year old videos like I always be doing…….I think the best part of SFII is the jobs, I remember turning my archer into like a cannon on wheels , if you do the work like most strategy games you get the payoff ❤ and thanks for not talking about the abortion that was SF Neo.
A good game that gets over looked and is shining force related is shining wisdom. The only quark is the run mechanic. you need an turbo controller if your going to do this game.
This was a great video!!! Shining Force was the first RPG I ever played and I have fond memories of it, and I owned Streets of Rage II, which still is the best beat em up game I've ever played.
So surprised with the huge popularity that the “Fire Emblem” series is enjoying that Sega hasn’t taken advantage of that by either making a new SRPG “Shining Force” game or maybe a remastered version of “Shining Force III” with all three scenarios available. (They’ve already been fan-translated, I’m sure if Sega threw them some money they could use the translation and touch it up if needs be).
It's awesome to see this old episode now, knowing that Streets of Rage actually got a sequel.

Awesome to see Golden Axe and Shining Force on the list.
Eternal Champions and Alisia Dragoon would also be in my list.
Jumping flash....It...It doesn't fall into the same problem most first-person platforming does.
Most of the time, your feet are invisible, so you have little to no clue how you need to land on a platform....but Jumping flash fixes that!!
Finally, someone who figured it out!! I can't wait to get into that amazing series, I'll bet it was so popular, and there was so many seq--
...Wait, what's that you say?
A few that spring to mind are Kid Chameleon, Body Harvest, Sunset Riders and Dynamite Headdy. Sequels or HD remakes would be great.
And it DOES NEED A SEQUEL.]
And 2, Locoroco maintains a childish tone and is kind of easy, as it was meant for younger players, the challenge comes from the secret levels and finding all the secrets in each stage.
That Sonic bit at the end was pretty hilarious.
First game requested Streets of Rage 4. Wish granted
SSX3, Timesplitters, Road Rash, Eternal Darkness and Jet Grind Radio.
Commenting on ten year old videos like I always be doing…….I think the best part of SFII is the jobs, I remember turning my archer into like a cannon on wheels , if you do the work like most strategy games you get the payoff ❤ and thanks for not talking about the abortion that was SF Neo.
Nice vid, but about Shining Force, i think the second is absolutely the best, and I'd love to see another game with just the same gameplay.
I agree! I think Dave just doesn't want anyone to know he has hours worth of it on his iPod.
