What modern 2D games would you recommend everyone try out?
River City Girls 1 & 2 and Sea of Stars
Abobo’s BIG Adventure 😁
@@moonbilal707 RCG Rocks!! 💙
Spelunky and Spelunky 2
@@moonbilal707 River City Girls is good, Sea of Stars sucks. Yooka-Laylee is a good 2D game.
I'm going through a dark period of my life. And the constancy in your videos since so many years are great help. Thank you very much Joe.
I know I’m just a stranger to you, but I still wish you all my best! ✌️
Good luck to you, keep your head up as well as you can! 💪
@@MSorge13 Thank you so much , kind words are always reconforting.
@@Craplatte Thank you for your kindness , i will.
@@cainmarchenoir4986 I’ve been in very dark places myself, and almost didn’t make it through them. When people say it gets better, it really does; it just takes time, unfortunately.
Keep pushing through as best you can, and maybe someday when you don’t expect it, it won’t feel so bad. You’ll look back proud of yourself for endearing it and not letting it stop you. ❤️
Jimmy was asking for it with a question like that.
Yeah, what an idiot!
I've been a fan of this show for 10 years now, and something about it feels like home. A few years ago, when you guys took a hiatus for a while, i understood, but once you cane backnit was like seeing old friends again. I miss Dave, but i hope you keep doing this forever, Joe.
The game master deserve his own channel.
Thanks for covering Arzette, great review (and video) as always. As a long time fan of Game Sack, this sort of thing is still surreal to me. Looking forward to you covering more modern 2D games!
Game sack is my ultimate comfort channel
21:14. Love the homage to Simon’s Quest by spelling “possess” wrong again.
And "brother of Johnny" hehe
I love when fans continue the legacy of franchises AAA publishers sit on and do nothing with!
*It’s 3PM in Japan. TIME FOR GAME SACK!!* ❤️
2pm for me
Well we're American, so no one cares
@@ramrodbldm9876I care.
おはよう
@@ramrodbldm9876well, you cared enough to comment so 🤣
Gun Lord X review had me dying lmao great shit
Jimmy is burnt to a crisp. That’ll teach him to ask about something unpopular ever again.
Yeah he can suck it
Bimmy...
Jammy...
Back in the day, he might've gotten called 'right the burnt victim'. Its a phrase you don't hear so much anymore, largely due to pushback from actual burn victims as well as grammar teachers.
@@CSGraves😂
I definitely would recommend "Reverie", it's a 2D Zelda clone but with a new zealand setting and some Earthbound vibes. Absolutely loved it 🥰
How's the gameplay?
Love that Joe isn't afraid to criticize Limited Run Games. Other RUclipsrs are always licking their boots.
What is the problem about them? Ordered there several times. I had no idea its questionable!
I agree ! So tired of them taking on average a year to ship a game. I’d recommend buying from play Asia instead. They are cheaper and the games are in English too!
Like who?
@@srviver104play asia are great but don't always carry the games limited run do.
Ronald McDonald as part of the Turrican universe confirmed!
Also, if anyone who is working on that Castlevania style game is reading these comments, I have a suggestion. If this goes well, you should make an unofficial sequel to Master of Darkness on the Master System/Game Gear. Maybe years later during WW1 the son of Dr. Ferdinand Social is a solider on the front lines when supernatural occurrences happen and he has to travel through war torn Europe to stop the cause before all sides are killed. Just an idea, but if you're a fan of Castlevania style games you guys would be perfect for a project like that.
Thank you Game Sack for covering games that were sitting in my library forever. maybe I'll get em a chance now
The first video of Sunday in August, and I wasn't dissapointed, hope to see more of the new episodes in the future Joe
Always appreciate a Star Trek VI reference.
6:07 To answer everyone asking about the questionable practices at Limited Run Games:
FOMO, LONG SHIPPING TIMES... and we can't even use PayPal in US and Canada to pre-order anymore ever since they changed shipping methods via Purple Stain I mean "Dot".
There's a lot more too, the worst I've seen recently being the 3DO game "D" they shipped out. Cheap flimsy packaging, and the game data was ripped onto STANDARD CD-Rs which didn't even work on a lot of actual 3DO consoles. Unless you're like me and can only get physical Shantae games via LRG stay FAR away from them or if you must, use a partner site/store like PNP Games or VGP.
This is just SOME of the questionable business decisions from Limited Run... Heck even with the recently announced SVC CHAOS release from them, they censored the box art but the collector's edition still comes with the UNCENSORED ART as a POSTER.
Sorry for the rant, I'm just disappointed LRG went this route.
2:00, You know, it is kind of cool seeing people make games like this. You can tell it's a CDI inspired style of game just from looking at it. There's something cool about that attention to detail.
Another great Saturday night. Thank you Joe ❤
Thank you!! :)
That one Simon Quest plant boss most certainly wasn't from Super Metroid.
I think that the fish did not look like it was also in another game.
It's been a while since I've watched one of your newer videos, and I'm really glad to watch a new video when I'm Idle once in a while, great video Joe! Hope to see more of your outputs during the rest of the year!
Great video Joe but I'd like to point out one thing. When talking about Shantae you mentioned it uses a card system and said it was like Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. Well that game uses a soul system in which Soma absorbs souls and uses the monster's abilities, while it was Circle of the Moon and then Harmony of Dissonance that used a card system.
You are amazing Joe!! since 2012 gamesack are my favorite channel on youtube! Greetings from Brazil
Brazil, land of incredible Sega Genesis homebrews.
Binny plz come to Brazil
Always love ending off my weekend with an episode of Game Sack!
When putting together your Gunlord X montage you forgot to include Rendering Ranger R2 for the SNES.
Ooof! You're right!
@@GameSack Honestly I was just BEGGING for you to cut to Universal Solider and after you did I knew you weren't going to stop just there lol.
Great work Joe thanks once again for all your efforts man as they are greatly appreciated by myself and many others.
It's great to leave a comment minutes after you uploaded a video, I'm very into 2D games and it's very interesting to see modern takes on 2D graphics whether are retraux throwbacks or indie outputs.
Greetings, and thanks for an awesome video
Shantae and the Seven Sirens not having Jake Kaufman music means I won't dance through the danger like I did in 1/2 Genie Hero! 😢
I appreciate the Star Trek VI shoutout.
Two uploads in one week? You're spoiling us
sometimes when i'm depressed i just let youtube go with autoplay on and i fall asleep and then i wake up at 3 am disoriented and that guitar solo from one of your videos is blaring but i can't move because i'm so tired and so depressed so i just wait until it's off and i go back to sleep BUT turns out it's one of your multi-hour comps where the song comes on over and over and it wakes me up each time. i'm very happy for your success, nonetheless
I swear, RUclips loves to play the same Game Sack videos I've watched a dozen times any time I leave it on auto play! 😅
Seriously, no matter what type of videos I'm watching, it'll just default right back to Game Sack!
Please try to get professional help. Depression is a serious disease
@@arashnikoubashman6946 no doubt bro, i see a doctor about it, thanks
Yup. This litterally is me... including the crippling depression at time's
I'm sorry you guys are depressed
Life is hard when your own thoughts attack you
Praying and trusting you establish an inner purpose, one that helps you faithfully push through the challenge
I've heard gratitude and anxiety can't exist together, so when I get down, I put on game sack so I have something to be grateful for.
Love and believe in you, Sack fam
I drool all bad and fall asleep when watching Game Sack! 10/10
If you haven't played Iconoclasts, I would highly recommend that one. Such a nice art style, plus a bunch of likable characters, an interesting story, tight controls, and enjoyable music. That's one of the two games (the other one is Hyperlight Drifter) that I've finished more than once in the past five years or so. Shantae was also a lot of fun.
Great episode that made me want to play Gunlord X again, which I bought a while ago because it was cheap. That's exactly what I'm going to do now. Have a good one! ^^
Anything from Iconoclast's developer is golden. Seriously, check the other games out if you haven't.
Awesome intro Joe, good to see GS is still going
He's a soldier.
I've had Simon Quest on my Steam wishlist for a while, so admittedly when I saw him in the thumbnail I was like "Wait, did they push up the release!?" lol
Woah! This is my first GameSack up to date video. Glad to be a new sub!!
Hair lookin good, Joe!
Redifer vs Rolfe hairline battle
SANABI is one of the best games ive ever played. Im not a big story guy but it struck a nerve and had me tearing up, very impressed. Plus the gameplay is 10/10. Another amazing game from South Korea. Highly recommend. (Its 2D)
Hey Joe, Not sure if you’ve played the Steamworld Dig/Heist games but they’re incredible. Couldn’t remember if you reviewed them before or not, but I think you’d really enjoy them.
Wow the CD-I art style might be an actual stroke of genius
Hello, and welcome to game 🎮 sack!
I would recommend Hundown. The music is so good 😄😄😄
Happy to see a new Castlevania homage, but I really hope the developers will tweak the colors a bit. 8 bit Castlevania could have some peculiar colors schemes sometimes, but they did not look garish like this.
I feel Jimmy woulda been spared if he asked about Devil's Crush instead or even so much as mentioned how much he enjoyed the music from said game... But he didn't, lmao
At least you can play Devil Crush on a Sega Genesis, although it's got a different name there.
Good topic, Joe! I love me some tilemaps and parallax and line-scrolling!
11:46 - technically, you should be showing the C64 version for the first version of Turrican. Everything else is a port.
Fair, but it's what I had. :)
Honestly, I feel like the whole indie scene with “faux retro aesthetic” has been done to death. I’ve never really played an indie game where I felt that it could have legitimately been released on an older console back in the day, they always feel like they are missing something.
Well, yeah, they are missing the nostalgia.
@@Baubles1337 Exactly.
Respectfully disagree. The Messenger, Bloodstained and Blasphemous 1 and 2 come to mind.
Can't wait for Game Master V Exasperated Gamer: Dawn of AAEEEESSS
That'd be ASSTASTIC
*PRESS THE START BUTTON!* Of course! Why didnt I think of that! Thanks Game Master!!!!
(Also that Simon Quest game looks great, right up my ally, thanks for showing it Joe)
I just saw the Zelda and Link CD-i games at my local retro game store yesterday. Each seem to be complete for about $300, each. Oof...
@Mike-nf6nf I got them for £4 each some time in mid to late 90s , sold them not long after at a bootsale for penny's
Not going to lie, I really thought you were about to show us the new unreleased Shantae game that was going to be coming out soon! 😂
"My old camcorder" is SUCH an underrated game.
Dust an elysian tail. Amazing game on 360, switch, ps4, pc
I want to like this game, really I do. But I kind of hate the way the levels are designed. Instead of you coming to the enemies scattered throughout a level, they come to you, which feels wrong. Why am I doing all the fighting at the very start of the level instead of having these encounters spaced out?
The show never gets old
0:38 : arzette ( ps4,ps5,xbox,switch and windows )
6:56 : hyper light drifter
( ps4,ps5,xbox one,switch,windows,linux,ios and android)
15:41 : shantae and the seven sirens
( switch,ps4,xbox one,mac os and ios )
20:39 : the transylvania adeventure of simon quest
( pc and maybe switch and ps5 later )
I once called the Nintendo tip line (only 4 bucks a minute!) to get advice on how to successfully dock with the fuel plane in Top Gun. That expert advice was, "Practice." Money well spent.
Better advice would be "buy a better game."
2:46 That fish needs to be 20% cooler!
I'm a simple man, I see a Game Sack episode, I click.
Great topic, thank Joe!
That intro… 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
That Simon Quest game seems really neat. I hope it comes out with a 4:3 aspect ratio option to give it an even more retro aesthetic
That Simon Quest game made me realize I think gaming has officially reached the point in which a games sense of humor abd personality can totally put me off of it despite how interested I am in the actual gameplay.
"ANY TIPS" 😂 nice Tropical Thunder line
Only thing i love more then Joe talking retro games is Joe talking modern games!!! (I hope he yelled when he read this, due to the !!!) i hope he branchs more into modern games.
Like a TRUE CHAMPION
You've met your contractual obligations in the mention of the word 'Arzette'.
As always, Thank you for making Game Sack. One of my favorite parts of Sunday mornings.
Thanks Game Master!
The shoot'em up sessions in GunLord X are obvious homage to Thunderforce IV, in my opinion. That boss has a tail that is very similar to the one from the "Strite" stage! Nice haircut by the way, and thanks for the video!
7am Sunday morning. ❤
After Saturday morning cartoons, I need my Sunday morning Game Sack. 👍
Transylvania looks amazing
Huntdown and Door Kickers Action Squad are my favorite modern 2D games.
Ah, these are the kinds of videos that got me into GameSack in the first place. Love learning about games I wouldn't have otherwise.
Best of all time. The Super Nintendads love you Joe! ( Fine…and Dave)
The 1st Game Sack video of August. & an interesting topic too!
That last game looks AWESOME. I'll definitely try that when it comes out
Another wonderful Sunday morning experience. I appreciate Joe's efforts and wry sense of humour. He is the best at what he does.
I love all different types of game sack. Game sacks that are shriveled and wrinkled, or game sacks that are smooth and misshapen. Game sacks that hang low and swing around in the air are best though. Everyone please tell me about your love for game sacks.
Simon Quest, the man, gets coins, but those coins are ginormous. He must have magical pockets. My favorite non-Sonic or Mario's on modern platform are Steam World Dig and Guacamelee. Magical backpack for Steam World Rusty and Juan just wrestles his currency.
Agree on the walking speed - on first glance I thought maybe they'd start at Gameboy Castlevania speed and have you level up from there- especially given Simon Quest is in b&w!
Lon, holy crap! I wasn't expecting to see you here.
Yay new episodes are the best gamesack uploads
It's truly a bunch of interesting looking games which i will want to try sometime in the future. And i really like Turrican section, or it was Gunlord X section? Nah, rather Turrican. Anyway i have a lot of enjoyment.
I appreciate these episodes because it gives me a chance to look at some games I may have missed that might be my kind of thing. I've been sick for a bit over a week. The main way I've passed the time, when I've had the energy, has been to play a bunch of the, mostly 2D, PC games I've acquired in recent years. Though I can say that playing Cuphead while sick is not the wisest move, unless the game isn't challenging enough as it is. I did beat Cuphead(again), along with the DLC which I hadn't gotten around to playing. I was amazed at how my strategies from 2017 came back to me very quickly. Some bosses that gave me fits back in the day I beat first try this time around, and some tough phases gave me no trouble at all. I know Cuphead has been featured on the show, but the DLC has not from what I can tell after searching the website. Maybe it should be.
I played a lot of Huntdown over the last week too. Great game, and glad to see that it was featured on the show and well received. I had forgotten it was covered. Some games that I've either recently played or have just started out with that don't appear to have been covered previously are: Super Skelemania(a mini Metroidvania), Steel Assault(short but tough 16-bit style game), Katana Zero, Blasphemous, Cyber Shadow, Vengeful Guardian Moonrider(from Joymasher, the developer of Blazing Chrome), Prison City(largely an homage to Natsume on the NES), and maybe a couple of others as I'm working through the backlog.
Timmy from east Virginia and Jimmy from north Virginia sound like horrible people.
It's great to be one of the earliest to recieve a notification about one of the your newest videos, I always appreciate modern Game Sack.
I love a visit to the Game Shack on Sundays. Another quality episode from John. ❤
Gravity Circuit and Katana Zero are 2 of my favorite modern 2D games.
If you haven't already, check out Valfaris. It's a great Contra-style game.
Hyper Light Drifter was my favorite game of the last decade. Glad you covered it
Is it me or are the bird in Simon Quest the assets from Ninja Gaiden on NES🤔🤔
i cant get over how good the transylvanian adventure looks, like it looks like demon's crest or thunder force iv but for the 8 bit nes style its such a genuinely beautiful looking game despite the silly parody nature of it all
I'm here for more Game Master! Let's see an episode :) great video, dude!
Woooohoooo another episode it seems like just yesterday you made @ video im in im in
Best videogame content on RUclips for me :)
If you're looking for a non-platformer 2D game, I'm working on a title called Crisis Island that's a twin stick shooter. There's a free demo on Itchio.
Can't believe Hyper Light Drifter came out 8 years ago, awesome game. Can't believe I've been watching GameSack for 11 years, awesome channel!
A Vangelis *and* Star Trek VI reference in one vid?
I think that’s all of today’s AWESOME taken care of.
SOMEONE'S a closet fan of progressive rock!
Awesome video, as usual, hope to see more in the future, keep doing these neat videos Dave.
Crosscode!!!!
One of the best indie/retro style games I’ve played in possibly the past decade.
For anyone with a PS5, if you have bought any of the Shantae games in the past for the PS4, I think they all have gotten a PS5 upgrade (free, at least it was free when I added them to my library a bit ago) by now. If not all of them, there might be like one title missing.
For the trophy/achievement collectors they also have a separate list to obtain if you're into that kind of thing.
