Never would I ever think that an Animal Crossing fan animation of this level would make my heart sink in such fear. It makes you question if it's really okay to alter and erase these characters like this, despite just being models and codes. I feel like if this whole saga ends on such a horrific note like this with no light at the end of the tunnel, it might break me. Just phenomenal work.
This isn't the end though this is the end of the villagers we got to know and love.
So there's this weird little game called Undertale I think you might enjoy...
And the villagers will never remember you and then when you go on your new island its like all the memories you had are just no longer there. I've restarted so many times its like I am experiencing it all over again and yet part of me is starting to realize that this may have gone too far.

honestly, i think seeing Blathers look at everything in the museum disappear was one of the saddest parts of this, since looking at how he reacts when we donate things and the dialogue he gives, he really does care about the things he has and seeing his slowly built collection just disappear like that, it was devastating

I didn't expect this to so deeply upset me. I love these villagers with my whole heart, and seeing the absolute fear and dread on their faces broke my heart. The animation was so well done and the rain really added a real feel to it that is so hard to achieve, bravo. but also you owe me therapy

I reseted my island on my birthday and i felt bad because Shari made a suprise Party for me and it was soooo sweet. I miss her 😭

Okay two things:
1. I love how the villagers look like with their hoods on in the rain, they look mysterious, and Isabelle kinda reminds me of Little Nightmares
2. The reset sequence was great, the music and everything give a sad feel to it, and I didn't realize the DIY recipe was gonna play a part in this either, which was unexpected

Also a little detail of the amphibian villager not needing a rain coat since she wouldn't mind the rain.

My favorite thing about these shorts is how well they explore darker themes without any of the characters ever feeling like they've stopped being animal crossing characters. I always think they're really well done, and this might be my new favorite of them. Fantastic work!

I love how you interpreted the perspective of the animal crossing characters about everything that happens that the player doesn't see. How the deleted characters get transported to new islands, what the reset looked like, etc. This is freaking amazing and I love it. You had a great way of making things very dramatic and heartbreaking, and I love it. Keep this up!

Although, Tom Nook only says "You will be erased from my and other residents memories." He does not say anything gets deleted
I’m not sure about the “villagers being transported to new islands part”. There are several version of the same villagers in the game on different islands, and they don’t get transported to new islands unless they’re moving and an island representative comes to pick them up. In the case of the villagers on Mask’s island, they’re gone, wiped from existence.

Look..
Villagers cant be "erased" even through resetting cause that would mean removing them entirely from the game.
So when you reset your island, the villagers you have DO get transported on the mystery islands where you'll find them in the NEW play after the reset (except for the randomly picked sisterly and jock characters who'ld start the island with you, of course).
Now, there ARE multiple "clones" of the same villager, but each of them lives in their own build up of the game. Thats why you can have (lets say) Raymond on your island and meet him on a friend's island too. BUT you wont meet another Raymond on any mystery island, and if you reset you'll still be able to find him in your new play.
Its just like the "official" npcs (blathers, Timmy and Tommy, Isabelle..), they dont just "get erased", they just get transported to the point when they appear ingame. Thats why Isabelle woke up at her introduction speech at the end of the video, and why Tom Nook knows he wont forget, cause him being the very first one to be linked to the island itself, he's the most "official" of them.
@@FreemanJS91 Interesting. However, since the film hinted that the isabelle on that new island with the girl with purple hair is the same isabelle (Her being confused, storyling following her, etc) I think it's hinted that she's the same one
Everyone is correct, and the villagers do ‘get erased’ but I think they will come back if you know what I mean, they are just too important to the story
Rewatching this after watching part 2; there's an EXTREMELY small detail at 8:35 going on with Isabelle's hairband. It's shifting between green and red, and when Isabelle speaks, it finally settles and turns fully red. That's a type of extremely subtle foreshadowing you RARELY see in independent works like this, that's absolutely incredible

This actually made me cry wow. Pietro saying “I don’t feel so good” then fading away, heartbreaking. And when Isabell went “=o” when shouting Pietro’s name, so cute but devastating at the same time. I absolutely adore this series and I can’t wait to see the finale, amazing work ❤️

i’m not even gonna lie here, i sobbed watching this. Seeing everyone’s homes vanish, seeing Pietro vanish, and everyone accepting their fates, it really got me. Amazing animation.

I just noticed something. Mask doesn't have any cranky villagers. This may be me overthinking, but perhaps he doesn't have them because they would have no problem calling him out on his bs themselves. He doesn't like having his power challenged, hence why he just reset the when the villagers finally get the courage to confront him, rather than trying to improve.
This level of creativity, the fact you can turn AC into a twisted psychological thriller horror is outstanding. I felt so immersed into this universe that no longer exists and even the music was well constructed. I don't watch alot of short films or other indie projects with filmmaking, but you sir might be one of the first I truly support, bravo for what you and the team have done. It makes sense because it gets you to think a simple question.. what if you are reset to a timeline in AC while remembering all that happened. and to make it such a memorable scene, the devastation that just transpired was perfectly captivated.
I just realised the soundtrack that starts at 6:10 is a variation of Isabelle’s morning announcements theme with a more depressing/disoriented tone. Makes the scene so much more emotional .

Knowing each town you reset is destroying countless lives, homes, etc.
No wonder why resetti was trying his hardest, not to stop you from resetting your game, but your whole save file because he was the one who really knew what was the cost of restarting your town.

I like the detail of keeping the mask person's face hidden. It really adds to that feeling that there is something wrong behind that mask. It's one of the reasons prison guards wear sunglasses, it's so you can't build a sense of humanity with them, and you pulled it off here amazingly.
(EDIT: AND when we finally DO see her face suddenly we can "read" them, and that sense of humanity builds, despite what we know of them)

@@breadbird I believe so. Since you can freely change your appearance in ACNH, my take on it is that the girl at the end is his new "mask" which Tom Nook was talking about just before the reset finished.
This sequence starting at 6:10 is way emotional than any commercial movie's cheap slow motion scenes. Almost cried when those little animals running in panic

I just erased my first island after 300+ hours of playing, and I can't help but feel upset and miss it along with all the memories I accumulated. And the big reset scene here really made that feeling double down on me, but then that dialogue about how no matter how the villager changes, they'll still remember; it was this sad heavy dramatic scene with promise of revenge. But somehow I started thinking of my island I just restarted, and I was like "yeah maybe my little virtual buddies would remember me" And strangely enough it actually made me feel a little better about all the resetting. Looking at that intense island deletion scene just made me wanna find my old residents and give them a hug.

Not sure how the reset villagers will play a role, if we assume that they're poddibly gone after the reset occurred (which would be sad & unfortunate). But with Isabelle retaining the memories of the events, who knows what will happen. And we're not sure if Susie, Kevin (aka "The Collector") & the nameless girl in "Morning Turnips", who we may guess Mask is using as a disguise at the end of this video, will play a role for the finale of this series.

The part that did it for me was Blathers. He saw his beloved museum just vanish. He stood there, knowing there was nothing he could do about it. And Tommy and Tommy. Tommy watched Timmy just fade away, again knowing that there wasn’t anything he could do. (I’m just assuming it was Timmy who was vanishing, as he’s the one I mostly deal with at the Cranny)

yeah thanks a lot for adding “Episode 9” to this to make it clear it was serial! I had watched the first two shorts when they very first came out but didn’t see the others and didn’t realize they were all connected. if anyone is confused the reset made everyone well…reset. (because people were actually confused in the live chat) Residents vanished, progress all gone, and core npcs like isabelle were just put back to stage 1 basically and memories were sorta wiped

I watched ‘In Boxes’ quite a while ago because it popped up on my recommended, but I had no idea it was part of an entire series of shorts, so I started from the very beginning after watching this for the first time. One incredible detail I HAVE to point out is that in one of the previous episodes, we can clearly see that the island’s flag is the half of the meme where two women are yelling ‘at Smudge (the cat), and now, with this ‘new’ (reset) island, the flag is of Smudge’s face. Such a small detail among countless, but absolutely incredible!

Ive been an Animal Crossing fan for so long and have always held the game close to my heart, literally one of my top 3 games of all time.
To see the characters have to go through such a thing does paint a painful picture that made me tear up, even if theyre mere codes and binary, but especially seeing the precious Isabelle sad like that...
Makes you realize that technically, Tom Nook sees everything even if you reset everything, hes the first and last character you meet.

Mask is put there twice as himself, which means that when Mask decided to be the cute purple hair girl he's really trying to hide everything about himself.

These are unbelievably amazing, every single scene is a visceral outpouring of quality on my screen. And what a wonderful storyboard you've made, the rise and falls of tension are so cinematic, a great cliffhanger too

Damn this miniseries has taken a TURN. Wouldn't have thought it was going in this direction, but I love it. Everything I didn't know I needed in an AC fan animation! I'm a little sad the next episode will be the finale, but it makes the most sense given the direction of the plot (and I'm sure these have been nothing but a pain to make). I've loved this, no AC fan content has, and probably never will, make me feel the same range or level of emotions your animations have. From the Settings Menu set to the reset sequence to the music, it's just *chef's kiss* SUPER excited for the finale!

The entire sequence from 5:55 up to 8:00 was breathtaking. Your exelent cinematography made the reset seem so grand and apocalyptic. The slow motion showing the imminence of the destruction
Also I like how the animal crossing characters just “spawn in” when they get introduced into the story. So Isabelle immediately goes from the reset to the resident services upgrade. That might be why Tom nook expects and understands the reset and the intentions of the player. he gets to experience every single day on the Island. He gets to introduce the player into the world, and can interact with them before they obtain the godly powers that the upgraded nook phone and Resident services gives.
Amazing as always, I love how you even had the “settings” reversed as if the characters were looking from the other side of the screen (which they were) and how the rain falls on the raincoats, amazing, i can’t wait for the finale

Not gonna lie, I cried so hard when the whole island disappeared into the vortex. I've been playing Animal Crossing New Horizons for two and half years and I still have my starting villagers, I just don't have the heart to let them go. All the details of this video are truly incredible. Thank you so much for making such high quality videos.

I still have one of my starting villagers and my first villager to move in. Bought the HHP DLC and played through it far enough to unlock redecorating resident houses. Just to give them the nice homes they deserve.

That is the only reason keeping my relationship with my villagers progress- I hated my island, but I valued my villagers more.
I'd never thought I'd see the day I'd feel bad for Tom Nook.
I really like he was portrayed in this series. He wasn't a cheapskate, and he actually cared.

What I really like about this episode is that it can be its own standalone story. This was my first Densle AC video, and I was fully invested even though I hadn't watched any of the shorts before this. Great work, I can't wait to see the finale.

This is seriously incredible and really thought provoking. I actually this last October deleted my island id had since the release of acnh. I kind of terraformed it in this really horribly unattractive manner and just kind of gave up on it. I felt guilty anyway but now I feel extra guilty deleting it. I'm sorry Isabelle 😞

Same here, even deleted my first island in October... I still feel really bad, because I truly loved that island. I only restarted because I felt that I had "finished" it, even though I CLEARLY hadn't... I also didn't really let my siblings say goodbye to all the villagers that they were really attached to (I was attached too 😭); I just wanted to delete it as soon as possible so I didn't have any regrets... Surprise surprise, I still did.
Playing ACNH hasn't felt the same since. All the villagers don't feel as "real" as mine, even though I know they were always all the same. It just makes me really demotivated to play :(

@@youdontneedtoreadthis nope you can only have one island on a switch console at a time, the only way to start again is to erase the old one. my little brother has a used switch lite that my stepdad bought off of ebay or some dumb shit and he got the animal crossing physical copy for christmas the other day (new). when he put it in the switch and “started” his island it already had a name and extra residents because the guy who sold the switch bought and briefly played the beginning of the game before, and didn’t erase the data saved in the switch before selling. we had to figure out how to erase it and get all of the stuff my little brother worked for on that island to me so i could send it back to him once he reset it. it took an hour
MAN these shorts are kino.... The details both visually and the little things (the objects, the frog not wearing the raincoat, the fact Wisp mentioned way back about having his bits stolen from him and that was a crafting item in the end, the use of the megaphone and "I didn't know we still had that" when it was an older game's item to use, Isabelle's dream possibly being a lampshade to having the world reset over and over again maybe)... Damn good music too with the scenes. Lotta people try to do edgy grimdark things with Animal Crossing, but you have really hit the right notes in having an uneasy atmosphere going on. Absolutely amazing dude, this is the best stuff right here~

Though I’m not the most literate in coding and AI things, so I could be 100% wrong!)
I like that you went full existential horror with this series. Animal Crossing always had a bit of a liminal feel that lends itself well to this type of storytelling. But Jesus Christ, this is sad.
2:53 Man, not just Tom Nook searching up "How to tell if you're in a simulation", but even looking up "How to disappear" (which, while morbid to begin with, can easily be about Mask coming and going at will)
Even the search results (obscured as they are) are about confusion and uneasiness even around benevolent town representatives! Such a cool little touch.
In most of the horror takes on Animal Crossing, Tom Nook's never made out to be as nice of a guy as he actually is, so it's nice to see a rendition of him that still maintains character in the face of a cosmic horror.
heres a prediction:
did you guys notice how Resetti randomly appears and apologizes to Isabelle and the villagers before the island goes through the reset process? my prediction is Resetti is the one that resets the islands after Tom Nook gives him the permissions to, and it seems he isn't happy about resetting the islands, as he probably knows the pain and worry the villagers have to go through. and it seems like most of the special NPC's aren't affected by the reset storm. (for example Isabelle and Tom) and Resetti seems to have teleported to the island to break the news, because when he disappears, he didn't seem to fade like most of the other things did.
Its actually very easier to understand than that :
1) the "things" that disappears are every bit of progress that got influenced by your experience during the game : the museum, the villagers you got, the items you stock.. so obviously everything disappears at the reset EXCEPT for initial characters like Tom Nook and Isabelle, the trees and the island itself..
2) Resetti is not "in charge of the reset" (imo) since he's always been *against* resetting, and everyone knows it. So his presence, for the villagers, is more of a relief that thanks to him the player may stop resetting the game. Except, this time, due to the.. "reset technical restrictions bypass" (lets call it that) applied by the player, he cannot prevent anything.. thats why he's appologizing. Cause he feels like he failed them.
Quite coincidental for someone with "reset" on his name to be one of the first victims of a game reset

I feel so bad! I reset my first animal crossing island about 1 1/2 years ago, and Tom Nook saying "are you sure you want to do this? Everything and everyone will be gone...forever," haunts me to this day.

I REALLY hope it's a situation where that new human in the end is NOT Mask Man, and the animals consciousness is split among all the players, and Tom and Isabel are starting to remember even after they are 'reset' to a different player.
Seeing the fear in Timmy's eyes as Tommy disappeared right in front of him made me want to jump in there and save him from that awful fate.
I also love how he set up making the garbage hat! Amazing attention to detail!
This is better than any Netflix series. Infact it needs to be one.

That took such a dark and sad turn! I was almost crying the whole time they were all disappearing. That was so well done though! One think I hate that happens in movies is when the characters have their minds wiped and they all don’t remember anything except one of them usually. That bothers me so much because I always feel so sorry for the characters. But this was done really good. I can’t get over how creative you are! Nice job!👏🏻😁

It almost makes you feel bad not wanting (or hating to have) a certain villager on your island cause he's annoying, or ugly, etc when you imagine him running (in vain) in fear before getting striked and disappearing. At that moment, it really hits you in the guilt, like..

The way you animated this made it feel so real! You didn’t miss a thing and you had me heartbroken at the pure fear that the animals were in, and you even included the npcs that work at shops and how the reset effected them too. I can’t wait to see the next part, because you always do a killer job with your animations.

I honestly am terrified of deleting my island and starting over because I feel like they would know lmao. Like I love my villagers just hate the island but mane this video made me confirm I will never delete it haha this was seriously so amazing I loved the way the reset was being shown with the pixels it is a masterpiece

OK, I feel like I need to bring something up! After Mask reset his island, we have Isabelle at an earlier time where the resident service has been built but confused. I believe someone in the comments mentioned that before the reset that occurred, Tom Nook made it so that Isabelle wouldn't forget the destruction caused by Mask, probably so she would prevent what's to come.
However, we see a new player at 8:31, a girl with purple hair & greenish eyes. We may assume that this is possibly Mask disguising himself so that no one in the world would be suspicious, which would be pointless as everyone's memories have been wiped with the exception of Isabelle's. BUT...doesn't she seem familiar at all? If we go back to Morning Turnips, other than Kevin, one of the players who visited Susie's Island was a girl with purple hair & green eyes just like the one seen at the end of this video! Now, since Mask & the girl are seen as separate people in the video as she was on the ground infront of the airport with Susie & Kevin when Mask arrived. But since we see her here, are we assuming that Mask took her identity after the reset or is there more to her, & possibly Kevin, that connect them to Mask in some way?
But hey, that's just a theory a film theory

I've always thought this when watching streams of time-traveling builders, it's so sad to see them so focused on designing and not paying any attention to their villagers. Yeah you get a nice island, but at what cost?

Be calm..its a game
There are people who are more connected with reality (that sounds insulting, but I promise I'm not meaning it like that) and don't have any trace of a feeling that these characters have any real emotion. It's not because they're apathetic or anything (I don't think), but they're probably more logic-oriented than emotion-oriented, you know? So they know that what they're doing isn't hurting the characters, and have no guilt.
I'm one of the emotional ones, lol. Every time I accidentally hit one of my villagers with a net, I feel so much guilt, and when I'm gone for a while and I come back to my villagers talking about how they've missed me, same reaction lol. I know they aren't real, but the feeling persists. There's a study on something similar, like how people feel empathy for stuffed toys and whatnot. One article said how it could be us projecting ourselves or loved ones onto the characters or objects. It's interesting.
8:12 you see, this right here is a really good frame to me, because i just really like the reaction of mask boy right here, they dont say anything of course, but they do make a noise through their mask, or as a way of "laughing" it all off, i think this is the first time they have ever made any kind of noise.
I like this touch and it makes them all the more intimidating.

I thought that there was hope for this Mask Guy in Time Travelling Designer. But now I realize that the whole design thing was just a means to an end for this guy. Everything was. It's like Wisp said. He truly just doesn't care.
I hope he gets what's coming to him in part 2. I really do.
I'm proud to say I still have my original Wild World town with all the original villagers. Same goes for City Folk, New Leaf, and New Horizons.
I'm one of those weird people that get attached and won't let go.
So glad I never reset any of my towns. I couldn't imagine my villagers fate being this. 😭
