This seems like it would make an interesting movie. I'm surprised these types of stories aren't made into movies... But then again, something like a movie could insult certain beings if the story isn't told carefully.
Mythoscope I agree. The fey folk both on land and in the sea often get misrepresented or over done. What the movies need is Scottish and Irish directors to keep firm hands on the crew to keep them in line with the true vision of the fey.
This was beautiful, I am half Scottish and my gran and grandad used to tell me a part of this story. it brings back allot of memories and it is interesting hearing the full tale.
1:02 hey if you are gonna mount a completely random horse dispite the fact that you all are riding your own horses already then that's your fault. If I was the horse and seven random dudes tried to mount me ALL AT ONCE then I'd most probably try to get rid of em too
I mean, compared to regular horses, for 7 people to be able to mount a horse and fit comfortably the Kelpie had to be huge. Far larger than any horse the 7 Princes had ever seen.
I found out I am part British and Scottish. I then read about the Kelpie and thought he is a ruthless killer. But After I watched this I now realised the Kelpie is not that evil. Thank you for uploading.
I cry for the Kelpie. I know what it’s like to not have your love returned. I hope he finds love again. If not, come to me in my dreams, and find peace for a moment in my arms.
I could listen to your storytelling all day! Thank you so much for this. Brings me back to the old days as a young child where a neighborhood elder would speak of tales of our past.
Wow! I am a little jealous XD In SA we don't really have mythical stories or legends to share among in the Afrikaner-culture. Mostly I found my fill in the African religions and their beliefs and stories. It must have been amazing to listen as a child to old tales :)
Well the horse did deserve it. He tricked her to love him. Word to the wise never be what you are not. Yes be kind, but be yourself. You shouldn't need to hid yourself from a lover.
That is so true! There's another version of the story where the Kelpie is instead enslaved as a horse for a year by the girl he tried to seduce and steal away. After the year is up she takes him to a Wizard who removes the magical bridle she put on him. He asks the Kelpie if he wants to be freed and returned to sea, but the Kelpie says no, he has fallen in love with the girl and would rather be mortal and live with her, and she accepts. I like that one a little better, because it has a bit more of a happy ending :) And soften the Kelpie a little bit. I'm sad, sad, sap XD
More importantly, he literally used a spell to get her to fall in love with him in the first place, then tried to do again after it broke. Deliberately messing with someone's free will is a lot worse than just lying to them
@@AbsurdandFantastical I've heard that version before as well, and I like it a lot better because both parties genuinely developed feelings for each other as a result of spending time together, instead of one party using love-spell tears on the other to make her fall in love with him
Same here! I have been riding for 10 almost 11 years and i will nevee stop even if my legs are gone i will mever stop riding! I will always find a way to ride!
Holllywood, do something grand with this! Be inspired and retell this story! And leave out any product placements and tiresome "ahead of their time" tropes that ironically make the character(s) even more nonsensical and/or pointless. I had never heard this type of Kelpie story, but I was thoroughly intrigued and touched.
What happened with the intro and outro? I only hear it on my right speaker 🤔 The rest was fine, though. Also, what a tragic love :c So did Kelpie need to take someone else in order to return the son(s)?
O_O I have no idea. I'll have to check the audio and see what happened XD I probably changed a setting in Audacity... Oh dear. No, it's not actually confirmed why he took the girl. It sort of left open to audience in the book, I wanted to say it was because he needed a wife, but I felt it would have been disingenuous. :)
In regards for taking the girl, to release the sons he at least needed 1 human to replace them. Or he didn’t like her personality, being vain and all that. Just guessing
Celtic languages are weird to pronounce for example bh at the middle or end of a word is silent and mh is pronounced as vh so the name dianamh is said as dee- anav ...... I think.....

Ok that horse is a little funky looking but, I still think he’s cute and I would still try to pet him if I saw him. I love horses btw they are my favorite animals in the whole world.
I know right :( There's another Kelpie Legend where the Kelpie is turned into a horse by a farm girl after he essentially tried to rape her, she uses him in the farmlands for a whole years, making sure to take good care of him. After a year she begins to feel sorry for him and takes him to a local witch to help her break the curse she had put on him. The witch simply asks "Do you wish to be a man, or remain a beast?" and he answers, "A man, for I have fallen in love with my caretaker." He's turned into an ordinary man and they live happily ever after. Still weird, but no as messed up as the original one XD
0:56 I'm quite sure that picture used is the Seven Sons of Fëanor from the Silmarillion (Sorry, I am a huge nerd about that book!) Great story, by the way!
I've never heard of that story! I literally typed in 'Seven brothers' when that pic popped up, I was like: "That'll do!" I'll have to check out that story. But I'll have to check it out, and thanks for watching ^_^
I love this story, even though I can find the Kelpie morally wrong in a few cases. The first, stealing the 6 Princes I can write off as it being his nature; but bewitching Dianaimh, it would have been better to hide what he was for a time and show her he had a good heart at least for her. Then she may have loved him in the end even after finding out who he was and what he did, he would have returned the 6 Princes because they truly loved each other. Though I wish he would have told Dianaimh about what he did to the Lady at the festival (forgive me but I can’t spell that name), that he decided to punish her for her wicked heart. In the future, he would only punish those with evil in their hearts, allowing all who were good to pass by with his blessing, possibly even helping them. If anything, the Kelpie caused the ending to himself. I actually want to use this tale as the backstory to a character in a fictional writing with some friends, that he did take the 6 Princes as he was a rebellious Dark Kelpie. But Dianaimh’s love made him regret his fall and he began to desire to atone for his wrongs. The story plays out as it does, but when Dianaimh marries Donald, the Kelpie’s heart is so broken that he atones to his family for all the wrong he had done in becoming a Dark Kelpie and desiring to win his throne by war. After he does this he falls into a long slumber of which he perishes upon Dianaimh’s death. Though many many years later he is reborn by the power of the sea and falls in love with another mortal woman. Though he is afraid to fully give his heart to her, for when he does, he will forget Dianaimh and all his past life to begin anew. Eventually his love for her becomes so unbearable that he lets go of who he was and does forget, gaining a new life, and the forces of Primal Magic make his love an immortal with him that they shall never part from each other.
The Changelings from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic similar to and had something in common to Kelpie, both are mythical fearsome shapeshifting horse-like creatures.

Hey! There have been some similarities noted between the Kelpie and the bäckahäst from Scandinavia. However, to claim that the Kelpie comes wholly from Norse mythology is a bit of a stretch. Celtic tribes come from a wide variety of cultures even possibly from Israel, and the Kelpie was possibly concocted to keep children away from the marshy swamps that are so part of the Celtic landscape. The Nucklevee is another example of a creature possibly created from the Orkney stories and the Norse settlers. However, in the Orkney isles, they saw many a seafarer from Norway come by. So the stories were shared and so changed to fit in. In short, it could be from Norse myths, but I am personally inclined to believe otherwise :)
Nah, I don’t think so. I mean, both the Celts and Norse have been in the Far North for a very, very long time. I’d say both were created by their own people, but it wouldn’t surprise me that people are trying to claim the story came from one place solely. Can’t we all just be happy with the fact that each people of the far past had things that made us all so interesting?

How did he cut off his fingers??? That's my question
Maybe only one hand was stuck, or he was really good at holding a dagger in his mouth?
@@Amy_the_Lizard it said both hands were stuck. And if so, how would he get the dagger in his mouth???
@@CallaLily69 If he's flexible enough and doubled over, maybe he could draw it from the sheath with his mouth? Pretty sure you'd need gymnast level flexibility to do that though
@@Amy_the_LizardSome outfits were fitted with dagger sheaths on a leather strap going from one shoulder to the opposite hip, maybe that’s how he got the dagger? From there, I don’t know, flexibility is all I can guess. 😂
Edit: I went back and listened to it again. It said “he could not remove his hand from the horse’s hide” so his other hand was free.
it broke my heart 💔
my mom always called my horse kelpy, he was as sweet as sugar towards me but he bites the other people that pass by, he even bites my mom.. untill we found out he was limb and we needed to put him down..
Oh! That's so sad :( I used to call my horse kelpie as well, just because he loved water so much!
but he was in pain, he was forced to be trained in jumping when he loved to race, my old trainer 'trained' him because i was too young back then
Isn't it pronounced Dee-a-nev?
Other than that, I loved learning more about the waterlogged murder pony of Scotland.
It wouldn't have worked.. sad though.
Now I know that the kelpie is basically the devils horse....right?
But... it's such a pretty horse O_O
but that's what it wants you to think before it devours you.....0-o
i have watched a movie about this all
Really? Which movie? I'd love to see it :D
There is on thing I don't get
WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU MARRY IF UR NOT IN LOVE
I think sometimes we don't always marry for love, sometimes good friends can realise they will make a good couple and go for it. Love can fade, and romance can die, but good solid friendship has been known to stand the test of time. IDK, just my opinion :)
Mythoscope wow ur such a great thinker BUT I get you too are friends and all BUT can't you just like ya know STAY friends
And also I watched this caz it was hollween so I could have gotten a good scare caz I don't Iike
scary movies 1 like from me and I have hitten that sub button just for u
Awe, thanks Pam! *glomp*
Not really a scary vid though XD I should have something up soon, hopefully >_< But I do hear what you're saying; marrying for love, is definitely the ideal :)
I know it's not a scary vid but even the littlest things can scare me like a spider on the kitchen counter so I would imagine something like that to scare me but surprise I wasn't ur vid was the first I clicked on and I love ur work so I can't wait to see what's the next vid about
Mythoscope are you the one talking in the story
