Rukka Kemi jacket review

  • The Rukka Kemi has a lot in common with a number of Rukka jackets. It is equipped with a three-layer, laminated, waterproof membrane. It comes with vents on the chest, at the shoulders, in the arms, up the flanks, and in the back.
You get volume adjusters on the biceps, lots of pockets, Neoprene in the collar, Velcro straps at the sleeve ends, and so on.
The Cordura outer chassis is re-inforced with Armatech panels for extra abrasion resistance at the shoulders and elbows. Now, like the Nivala, the Kemi is rated A under EN17092, but as it comes with Rukka’s huge Level 2 armour in the shoulders and elbows, one can suggest with a degree of confidence that, in the real world, the Kemi will outperform most AA-rated jackets from a protection perspective; and most definitely so were you to exchange the jacket’s Level 1 back protector for one that meets the higher Level 2 standard.
As with all Rukka jacket’s the Kemi comes with a six-year warranty, once the jacket has been registered with the UK importer.
But there are three things that make the Kemi particularly worthy of note.
First, it is incredibly comfortable. And this is largely down to the stretch that is built into the outer chassis of the jaket, in the same way it is with the Nivala and the Comfo-R. We reckon the Kemi's more comfortable even than the vastly more expensive Nivala; this is partly down to the stretch, and partly down to its weight. It is much lighter than the Nivala. In truth, we think the Kemi might just be the most comfortable, waterproof Rukka jacket ever!
The second thing that sets the Kemi apart is that it does not have a Gore-Tex membrane. Now for us that’s certainly not a positive. Gore makes the best membranes. And Gore does not allow the manufacturers it works with to cut corners. You simply cannot make a sub-standard Gore-Tex jacket. Which is why we have often made it clear that if you want a laminated jacket that works you need to go for one with a Gore membrane. But let’s not forget that we are talking about Rukka here. After all these years, they should know how to make a laminated jacket work properly. I think, therefore, that one can be reasonably confident that the Kemi will not let you down.
This having been said, whilst you will get Rukka’s six year warranty that will also cover waterproofing, obviously; you will not benefit from Gore’s lifetime, waterproof warranty. And that is something you will need to take into consideration because the Gore promise is pretty amazing. We have seen it in action, and it stacks up. You will always pay a significant premium for Gore-Tex, but for many high-mileage riders, and for those who ride in the worst of weathers, it is worth the extra outlay.
The only way to make a decision is going to be to try the Kemi on, and come to a view as to whether it’s as comfortable and nice to wear as we suggest. If it is as comfortable as, or more comfortable than, the Nivala, then the price differential cannot be ignored.
Of course, the Nivala is better spec’d.. You get a concealed storm collar. You get GTX cuffs. You get a down jacket, whereas you get no thermal lining with the Kemi. You also get a Level 2 back protector with the Nivala. You only get a Level 1 protector with the Kemi. All these factors have to be taken into consideration, but the fact is that, never before, has £750 bought you a 3-layer, laminated jacket from Rukka; let alone one that’s this nice to wear.
The big deal here, of course, is the Gore-Tex membrane. And where we get to is that if you do 15,000 miles a year, and ride through the worst of weathers, you might still find Gore’s lifetime warranty reassuring. But we cannot believe that the Kemi will be anything but well put together. It will be more than up to the job for most motorcyclists. And certainly it’s going to be more than a match for any non-Gore-Tex jacket out there.
The Kemi is in every other way a proper Rukka jacket. It will have been built to last. And with its over-sized armour it is going to be incredibly protective. Ultimately, we cannot say whether the Kemi really does represent the best of both worlds, in the way that it appears to. But what is clear is that it is going to make a 3-layer, laminated Rukka outfit more attainable than one has ever been in the past.

Bought this set and and confirm its extremely comfortable. Had the Rukka Kingsley and found it extremely uncomfortable. Sold it and got this one instead and its NIGHT AND DAY difference comfort vice. So far this one has kept me completely dry even in heavy rain.

Im a fan of Goretex, had gloves and boots, never let me down. Its interesting to see that Rukka now , like others, (Alpinestars and Dianese for example) are creating similar gear in there ranges, one Goretex, the other another brand of membrane with very different price points. I do wonder if manufacturers are realising that other membranes are very close to ( or maybe better) then Goretex without having to pay the premium to use it and the name. Those that have used Goretex for years (Rukka, Dianese, Alpinestars, Richa etc) will certainly have learned what they need to do to make the garment work. What i do find odd is Rukka dont appear, from what i can see, to have published anywhere the membrane theyre using or the spec.

Great review Chris, have now confirmed that it’s going to be a new Kemi jacket for me, I loved the cost comparison with the Nivala v Kemi, I’m only a seasoned rider & so the Kemi will no doubt be a good acquisition for me (& the Nivala doesn’t even have the ‘R’ on the back lol.
    Too notch review cheers 👍

Does the jacket include a specific pocket suitable for a front chest protector?
On the official website, the jacket is referred to as the "Armatou-R" and not "Kemi." Could you confirm whether these are different models or if it’s a renaming of the same product?
Lastly, are the zippers waterproof? I usually find the jackets material is waterproof, but after having water pool near your crouch area, it seeps through the zipper
Thank you for your detailed insights and looking forward to your response!

the thing about the Kemi that attracts me (and others like me I'm sure) is the fact that I already have the thermal liner and the back protector and don't want chest protectors. So I can get a RUKKA suit for way less because I already have all that other stuff. The GOR promise is a serious argument however.
Knowing I could replace the GOR product forever vs only 6yrs on the Kemi does make me pause...but realistically I don't ride in the rain too often so the odds of me 'calling in the favor' in 8yrs is very small.
I think this is the target audience of the Kemi but could be way off the mark. As always, I love your videos and thank you so much for your knowledge!

As I said in the review, it has a 3-layer membrane; just not a Gore-Tex one. CP.

Yes, I also watched Mork and Mindy’s most excellent and entertaining review, but their style is usually more knockabout; they don’t usually come out with technical stuff, so I need to check this information at source. The one thing I would say is that another non-Gore brand recently quoted these exact same scores to me, so it may indeed be that there is such a membrane out there. I will be checking, and then confirming the situation when I know more. CP

Its a fact RUKKA know a thing or two about putting a suit together but I'd say its a very brave move to move away from Gore-Tex. I spend lots of time outdoors, walking fishing and obviously biking, and over time have worked out if you want to stay dry many if not all other waterproof membranes always come up short on their promise to keep you dry. Gore-Tex is yet to let me down where evrythig else has come up short, spectacularly. If anyone is going to get this right it will be RUKKA, but only time will tell.

Yes, I agree. It might be a mistake, if this damages their name. But they may be trying to make the brand more accessible. Only time will tell. CP

@@Motolegends It may well come down to expectation and price point. RUKKA make the best gear bar none, all be at a cost, but for many bikers its overkill, at this lower peice point lighter usage may be the order of the day and Gore Tex unnecessary. I'm sure they know what they're doing.

      1. **Innovation and Competition**: With the expiration of Gore-Tex patents, other companies have been free to develop their own waterproof and breathable materials, fostering innovation and competition in the market. This has led to improved technologies and alternatives that may offer better value or performance.
      2. **Environmental Concerns**: The shift from using problematic chemicals like PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), which is associated with environmental and health issues, to more sustainable materials aligns with a growing consumer demand for environmentally responsible products. Gore-Tex's move to using safer materials like expanded polyethylene and polyurethane, which other companies had already been using, highlights this trend.
      3. **Cost-Effectiveness**: With alternatives often being cheaper and sometimes more effective, consumers have more options that may better meet their specific needs without paying a premium for a brand name. This makes the market more competitive and can drive down prices.
      4. **Market Dynamics**: Gore-Tex once dominated the market through aggressive business practices and patent control, which stifled competition. Now, with a more open market, other brands are proving capable of producing comparable or superior products without the need for such practices.
