So, as you say Cinema Gamut will be the best, but if the output will be 709, then should I just shoot in 709? Or Gamut will still be better. Eg: We shoot on RAW even if output is JPEG. Does the same logic apply here? THANK YOU.
@@sanjayfgupta2167 as long as you’re shooting in LOG, they can easily add a bt709 LUT in the footage. It gives them more ability to match all of the cameras they are using.
Can you do a video on doing wedding reception tips and trick with eos r? What video setting would you use with c log? So you dont want it at 400 at the reception?
Ah yea. Lots of great tips that could be had with wedding videography. It’s so hard for me because I’m always running full speed on wedding day. I’ve tried before but never have been able to make a video. I could potentially make one and use footage from a previous wedding though. As far as the reception itself, i do use Clog until things get really dark, say open dance floor. I’ll push my LOG footage up to 12,500 on the EOS R6 and still get useable footage. I will capture both LOG and also not using LOG in case the LOG footage doesnt look good though.
Hello! Currently I own an eosr and was alwais shooting with iso at 100 or L trying to avoid noise. Will start to bump the iso to see if the footage stays cleaner specially in the shadows
Bro, you could've just sent me this video in which you show how shooting on iso 400 is the best you can do on C-log. Anyway! Glad I got your help man, I definitely see the difference myself. Also exporting in RUclips 4k and cbr with target bitrate of 45 has helped me a lot to improve my YT quality on my last video! I appreciate your content man!
@@TonyMellinger I'll upload it tonight at 19h, Brussels time haha. The 4k made it much better. In my next video, I'll take the overexposing and 400 iso rule into mind!
I use Adobe Premiere Pro. That’s a standard one. In the long run, I think Final Cut Pro is cheaper (and Mac native) but I started in adobe and haven’t ever switched from anything else. I do think DaVinci has a free version, but I’m not really sure about editing in it.
Question please: I'm used to shooting pictures at about -1 on the light meter. Is it okay to still shoot videos as well slightly under exposed using C Log? Or should videos never be shot underexposed like pictures? Not sure if C Log ruins videos easier if shot any bit underexposed due to being such a flat colored video. Reason i usually shoot a little under exposed is to not have the sky blown out. Thanks!
Shooting underexposed works really well for photos. You protect your highlights and then raise the shadows in post. The problem with that in video is when you raise the shadows it adds ugly noise. I suggest actually shoot a little bright and lower your highlights in post. Watch this video, I explain my thoughts about LOG settings with examples: ruclips.net/video/xgEaaydTJZA/видео.html
I was wanted to get the eos R6 first but I also want to have eventually have 2 bodies for weddings. The eos R is a great price now. Thoughts? Should I get the R now and get the R6 later? Or just get the R6 now?
Are you using these cameras for Photo or Video? I’d probably suggest getting the R6. The EOS R is great But I’ve noticed the R6 handles the low light of a wedding quite a bit better and the AF is seriously night and day. I thought the AF was good on the EOS R and then used the R6. No comparison. If you’re making money capturing weddings, the R6 will pay for itself and you’ll be happy you have the newer camera.
Hello, I am super new to videograohy, been doing photography for a long time tho. Questions: I want to mainly music videos, which external mic should I get for better sound quality? Second, what about SD cards?? Or does this camera have internal memory that would be good enough to store videos?? Thanks 😊
Hi! It depends what you need for an external mic. The Rode go II is really great if your subject is close, otherwise you’d want to get a mic that can get really close to the subject like a wireless lav mic. (Rode wireless systems are really good). As far as SD cards, i only use Sandisk. If you can go for the extreme pro UHSII, you’ll thank yourself in the long run because of the fast transfer speeds.
I assume that the reference to 24fps relates to the screen refresh rate on NTSC televisions? For the users in Europe where we use PAL where the screen refresh rate is 25fps, we can set our cameras to 25fps for the same effect?
Yea if you are shooting for PAL, you shoot in 25 FPS. I do know quite a few people in Europe who still shoot in 24fps though. I’m really not sure how that works because I’ve never really tried how it works 🤷🏼♂️ idk if you have to shoot in NTSC and then export out in a different setting so there’s no flickering or what. I’d say your safest shooting in PAL and 25fps tho!
@@TonyMellinger I guess it all gets done in that black magic in your PC called codecs? 24fps, eye of bat, tail of lizard, give the cauldron a stir and out comes 25fps :-)
@@TonyMellinger I just recently left Sony after 5 years with them and starting over with Canon Eos R. Never had a Canon before but The RF lenses sold me and I'm excited for the future. Thanks for the great info.
@@DirectorJJW the Canon eos R is a fantastic camera but the Sony a7r IV is mindblowing! Full sensor 4k 30fps with in body stabilization, 1080p 120fps ufff. I have the Eos R.
Why set shutter speed at double the frame rate again? I've been ignoring this rule FOR YEARS but am starting to see my footage isnt the best in harsh lighting, and am wondering if this is why. THANKS!!
The shutter speed has to do with motion blur. If you crank your SS, you just will have more of a jittery image. If it’s too low, it will look extra blurry. I’ve mostly noticed it’s a problem when your slow down 60fps footage. It looks really choppy. If it doesn’t bother you, why change. As far as harsh lighting, that’s probably a sensor thing. Sensors can only handle so much. Best thing to do is make the lighting less harsh haha! LOG footage has helped with this.
@@TonyMellinger OK thank you! I have been doing at least these 2 things wrong which has made for some junk outdoor shots in harsh light. -Shooting below 400 ISO, even as low as 100. I will stop doing this. -Im run & gun so I have the EOS-Rʻs digital IS set to Enabled which then uses less of the sensor. I cant really stop doing this...need to upgrade to R6 for IBIS instead of digital IS. Thoughts? THANKS AGAIN!
@@TonyMellinger This is interesting...I’ve stayed away from the R6 because of the warm cast I see in all the video footage online. Does this little WB tweak remove that completely or is it baked in as a characteristic of the camera? It’s not something I’ve seen in footage from the R or from the R5.
Great video! This is very helpful for me to learn C log shooting with my EOS R. I tested the C-log in bedroom under low light. For the curve peak to be shown in the middle of histogram, I had to turn ISO up to over 10k. Does it sound right to you? I’m using the RF 24-105 lens so the brightest aperture I could use is f/4. I also set the shutter at 1/50. Should I slower down the shutter to 1/25? Would it work for 24fp FHD shooting?
Hmm that seems pretty dark if you’re at 10,000. If you’re shooting 24fps, set your SS to 1/50, f4 and iso as low as you can. I’d suggest opening up a window or using some lights to help bring the overall level of light in the room higher. That will push down your ISO. Hope this helps!
Tony Mellinger Thank you for you reply. I will definitely try more lights in the room. Guess in general, C-log shooting might not be applicable or necessary under dark environment or extreme low light?
Using the control ring for ISO looks pretty sweet. I wish there were some easy way to control the ISO without a control ring. Sure you can map it to dial but than you loose another function instead...
Great explanation of settings and practicality of the use of CLOG. As you increased exposure in order to get a properly exposed image, you bumped up ISO. Is there a reason why you would bump up the ISO instead of exposure compensation. Thanks for all of your help and expertise.
I’ve used the canon eos 800d for a while now and feel like I have gotten the best out of that camera, looking to upgrade in a small price range would u recommend me getting a canon eos R, thanks
tony, great channel. to go for R user. question about the log - is it me, my camera or - does the camera struggle with focusing when recording in the log? compared to any other 'look'? i have this experience at LOW LIGHT. would love your input if you ever got to experience this
Hi, I've just bought this camera today. Switching to Movie mode and going to this tab, I can see the Canon Log settings option is dimmed out. Please help Update: Figured out. Great video bro. Thanks! :)
Thanks for the pro-tip about white balance correction. Goes this white balance correction apply to video settings in general, or only when using CLOG? Thanks.
Thx Tony, I’m actually Fuji user but think about to try eos r clog for video, your information are really helpful! btw is it enough with sandisk 170mb speed for the card ?
Hey Tony!! I don't know if it is a stupid question.. I am actually starting with all this new camera-recording videos. what if I have those setting but I am outside and instead of wanting more light I have a lot of highlights and overexposed? and the Iso is 100... Is it bad to go down to 100 on ISO? Do you move the shutter speed? or the aperuture.. in that case what would you do? thanks! great video!
Hey! It kind of depends what I’m shooting. The correct answer is to raise your aperture. That could get up to like f22 or something if it’s super bright. Lowering your ISO would give you grain as if you were at 800 or 1000 if it were too dark. It won’t be too bad, I would def start with lowering the ISO and then slower raise the aperture until it’s properly exposed. The best thing to do is pick up an ND filter. It’s kind of like sunglasses for your camera. I just made a video on them by the way.
I use 1080 because I like 60fps for all of my Broll and the 1080 footage looks so good! I don’t mind the crop, but I’m used to cinema cameras and they’ve got a super 35 crop too. The bigger drawback for me with the 4K is the large file sizes.
Great explained man👍🏻 I was researching but haven't found the right answer yet- will I benefit in terms of color grading in DaVinci when recording in rec. 2020 instead of bt. 709 even though I'm going to edit and deliver on an 8bit Monitor? My thoughts behind this are the same as 8bit and 10bit- ofcourse I can not see the 10bit data on a 8bit monitor but my source file is 10bit data so I can grade more precisely- so is it similar in case of bt. 709 and bt. 2020? Don't know if I'm on the right track or completely wrong haha. Lots of greets
I I think you are thinking right. Even though you won’t outputting to an10bit source, you’ll still have a better looking end product with the highest quality you can start with.
Well, your white balance will change depending on the situation. If it’s cloudy out, 6500 will probably work. 5600 is what my light temperature is so that matches the color.
Thanks for the video. One question though. When I shoot in log, I usually use the meter to set the exposure. I set it to 0. When you set the histogram to the middle the exposure meter went to +2. Does this mean my footage has been under exposed.
Those are good observations. My recommendation is to find out what works for you. I’ve found it’s somewhere in between 0 and 2 depending on the situation and lens I’m using. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll know when your footage is properly exposed.
Tony Mellinger Tony, I will experiment next week when my R arrives but perhaps you know, when in log what does meter = 0 mean? Nominal for the linear interpretation of the pixels or nominal after CLog transformation has been applied? Sorry if I’m confusing the subject here... considering your test footage shown, what did your ‘meter’ show pre and post exposure comp to bring up the low end?
@@jmich5123 The burning question! I'm beginning to doubt the meter when shooting log. I've always heard that you should overexpose Canon log 1. There is huge detail loss in low light with log 1 unless you more or less ignore the meter. Correctly exposing as Tony recommends produces results closer to how my eyes see the subject.
@@NickMirro I have the R5 now and it’s easier to understand with both CLog and CLog3. The histo is reflecting the log values and in the case of Clog3 my approach has been to keep the low stuff up over the 20% bar. Using this approach Clog3 is ‘better’ to me in that it seems to keep the highlights tamed below saturation much better than does CLog. I’m no cinematographer so anyone who wants to critique go for it. I simply want to get better, not be the definitive opinion…. Thanks for all the insight!!
Is there any way to display in linear while recording in log? Also let’s hope Canon has a firmware update where histo stays during recording. That is disappointing and confusing to me why the histo isn’t available ALWAYS!!
I live stream using the EOS R and i’m using CLOG with view assist which looks okay but obviously not perfect. Is there a way to get Clog footage and still have a normal color grade on the footage as i’m live streaming? I need to use Clog because of editing in post. Thanks
Unfortunately i dont think there is. I think you either have LOG or Picture profiles, you cant assign Log to internal recording and Picture profile to webcam.
@@TonyMellinger I bought an atamos Ninja V that is supposed to allow me to. Haven't used it yet but you can add luts to it on display/output only while keeping raw clog
Hi tony, do you have any tips on how to solve this? I tried lighting up my subject, while creating separation In the background by leaving the background completely dark. Theres a lot of grain in the background. How should i solve this scene? Thanks for the help!
A really good way to create separation from the background is to add a “hair light” on the subject. Place a light on the back of the subject (out of frame of course) and then and more light on your background. Once you’re in post processing you can darken your background if it’s too bright but you won’t have any noise then.
I love that most of your videos are EOS R related! Not many others on RUclips are doing that. Would you be willing perhaps to do a video centered on lowlight video performance? For things like 4k vs using the full sensor in 1080p and comparing lowlight performance, and maybe higher iso performance for video as well?
Just for reference for you, I was shooting up to 10,000 ISO for this video tho. In the dark reception all near the end. ruclips.net/video/C6EDSCK09lk/видео.html
Do you think it is still better to shoot in log IF you don't have Premiere? I use Filmora so there are not as many options for color grading. Just curious :-) Thanks
Good question. I’ve tried grading in lumafusion on my iPad Pro and it hasn’t worked quite as well. Honestly the picture profile color is really good, you just have more room to be creative in LOG.
Hey Tony, Thanks for this video! At the Color Matrix settings what is it that you prefer in EOS Original over Neutral in terms of looks? (I don't have any experience with Canon Cine cams.) I would like to see how you grade a log footage. So far I have used Canon C-log profile in Resolve and at time of shooting I expose for the sky and in post I want lift up the face well so it doesn't look too dark it gets tedious to get to a balanced exposure. How would you go about such a challenge?
Basically if I am shoot with cinema cameras (c100mkii or c200) and I need to match this footage, I will use the EOS Original. If I am trying to match DSLR shot in a picture profile (1DXii, 5D4, other eos r footage shot in a picture profile) I will shoot in neutral. I’ve found it’s easier to match those types of footage appropriately. As far as exposure, it would be nice to have a little more dynamic range. I find I slightly overexpose the sky and then I can bring down the highlights a bit and bring up the shadows and find a happy medium. My suggestion is keep playing and figure out how far you can push the footage in grading. I think you’ll get the hang of what is possible and the best scenario for you.
@@TonyMellinger Ok, that makes it easier for you with those two cine cams. My experience is that EOS Original is more neutral and require tad bit more dialing in the right colors as it is so neutral. That makes it also easy to work with if colors are saturated. Neutral I experience I have to change hue and saturation on as saturated colors becomes to saturated.
Hi Tony. Just got into another world to know about using the video mode and found your video very interesting and smooth. Loved it. Will try shooting video and let you know any problems I come across. Thanks for this latest video. Also what editing software do you use for all your videos?
Hey Tony, I'm following your video and I can't find Canon Log Settings. Everything is displayed except log, is there a specific way to get this to generate on the menu screen?
when i record on 60fps and 1/125 shutter... i notice there's a screen ripping or stutter... if that makes sense.. so i have to dial down the shutter to 1/100.. any tips why is this? thanks.
Do you mean if you are recording a TV screen? Or on the recorded image. Are you shootings in the use? You may need to try shoot in PAL if you are in specific countries. Then you would be at 50fps, 1/100 for your shutter speed. It has to do with the frequency of the power being sent to the lights. I had trouble with that when I was in Africa.
@@TonyMellinger hi tony... thanks for replying. i meant the recorded video is not smooth.. there's like a screen tear when the camera is set to 60fps and 1/125 shutter.
Hmm not sure I’m following. Send me a private link sometime and maybe I can see what you mean in the footage. Or shoot me a message on IG. I’d love to help you figure it out.
Hey Tony! Do you feel comfortable using CLOG in indoor receptions and pushing the ISO with it needed to overexpose, or would you switch back to a profile?!
Richard Nay Films check out this wedding video. Shot completely in CLOG. After this edit, I am not afraid to push the ISO up to 8,000 to get the shot properly exposed. I’ve noticed when you underexpose, that’s where you get the nasty noise. ruclips.net/video/C6EDSCK09lk/видео.html
Thanks Tony. Which lut are you using with the footage in post. Iam assuming one if the canon ones. I always find the lots look terrible on my footage, maybe iam underexposing to much. Cheers
I don’t use LUTs really. If anything I’ll use a creative finishing LUT in an adjustment layer but lower the percentage of the adjustment to control its intensity. It’s all just making adjustments in lumetri color in Premiere Pro. I’m guessing color grading will be one of my next tutorials. I would try bringing your exposure up if you think that may be an issue though!
@@TonyMellinger thanks tony, that's good to know. I use davinci resolve, but never found luts easy to work with so have just colour corrected to what looks good. hi Tony, sorry for this basic question, I just got my EOS R. In trying to copy your setting at f1.8, I can't get mine to go below f4.0. It is my lens? I'm still using the kit lens.
As always, it's great to revisit previous content as a refresher. I've been hearing that to get the best results in C-LOG, we should probably expose either at "0" or "+1". To overexpose to "+!", does that mean we bump up the ISO or does that mean we bump up exposure compensation? Thanks.
@@TonyMellinger Ok. That makes sense, just how you would normally expose, just over-expose slightly. How are you liking your R6?!? I'm thinking about making that same move, but am a little concerned about the editing workflow. I watched your other video, and others regarding proxies and whatnot... Do you know if the R6 uses the h.265 for 10bit HD, or is h.265 only used for 4K footage? Or is all 10bit using h.265 and all 8bit is using h.264? Is it right for me to assume that if I shoot in 8bit, that the editing workflow would then be similar to what I'm already doing on the R? Thanks for your help.
@@ofthewayministries yep, just over expose slightly. Anywhere fro 1/3-1 or so. The more you do it, the more you know what the camera can handle it. I love the R6 and the R5. Honestly for me, the R6 is the best camera out there right now. As far as the footage, if you shoot in LOG, it’s H265 and you make a proxie. If you dont shoot in LOG, the footage is very workable, but you loose the 10 bit. It’s a solid upgrade in every way possible. I dont even consider the 30MP vs 20 a problem, i have no problem at all with the 20.
@@TonyMellinger Oh, ok. So all CLOG footage is 10bit (h.265)? There's no 8bit CLOG as what we had with the R? It seems like h.264 is only associated with 8bit (4k/FHD). Am I understanding that right? So if I shoot (for now) 8bit with a regular color profile, then that would be h.264, which is the normal process. But if I go CLOG or HDR in any way, then I'm getting into the 10bit (h.265) arena and will need to use proxies. Correct? Or, use an external recorder, which is able to record in ProRes. Correct? Thanks.

I read that the out put will mostly likely be 709 as this will be for the hotel's website and for their RUclips Channel.
Hi you video is really helpful thank you very much, but I am wondering if is it possible to has histogram shown while shooting video?
Unfortunately it is not possible. That would be a much welcomed firmware update huh!

Nice one man. Very helpful thank you!

Hello! Currently I own an eosr and was alwais shooting with iso at 100 or L trying to avoid noise. Will start to bump the iso to see if the footage stays cleaner specially in the shadows
Underexposed footage will give you more noise than higher ISO. Make sure you are exposing your footage properly and you shouldn’t get any noise!
I've read other places that in C Log you should shoot at 400 ISO that it is the "zero" balance when in C Log.
Awesome! Glad I could help! I’ll check out your latest upload!
Ha! I thought this was the original video you commented on.

Great help! Thanks!
Glad I could help!
Question please:
I'm used to shooting pictures at about -1 on the light meter.
Tony Mellinger haha thank you! I must of missed that in the vid. Good to know, I was shooting under exposed in vids. This should help. Thanks

Very useful thanks man! BTW loving the EF 24 2.8, thanks for recommending :)
Oh good, ya that’s a great lens for the price!
Tony Mellinger you can say that again. I got one for 170 bucks!

Histogram doesn't show when I leave the display settings menu. How do you get it to stay on in shooting mode?
Yea that’s a downside of the canon mirror less system. as soon as you hit record it goes away
Do you also set B2 on the WB for your EOS R6?
Yea I sure do. And my new R5 🤣

Depending on your camera you have, you should 3 dials. I have iso set to one of my dials as well.
Great explanation of settings and practicality of the use of CLOG. As you increased exposure in order to get a properly exposed image, you bumped up ISO. Is there a reason why you would bump up the ISO instead of exposure compensation. Thanks for all of your help and expertise.
Well, exposure compensation is an automatic setting isn’t it? I like to have the control so the camera ain’t making adjustments I don’t know about.
Thank you for this information! You’re awesome!

Is this camera EOS R can use to shoot Movie ?
Yes absolutely
Tony Mellinger but never the shutter speed?
Hongo 87 some people do... I don’t like the way I makes the footage look. Makes it kind of like iPhone video. Really jittery
Do you shoot 4K on this camera or you stay at 1080p because of the crop on 4K?
I use 1080 because I like 60fps for all of my Broll and the 1080 footage looks so good! I don’t mind the crop, but I’m used to cinema cameras and they’ve got a super 35 crop too. The bigger drawback for me with the 4K is the large file sizes.

will I benefit in terms of color grading in DaVinci when recording in rec.
Hi Tony why not shoot at 6500k? Did you find that you get better results at 5600K?
Thanks
Well, your white balance will change depending on the situation. If it’s cloudy out, 6500 will probably work. 5600 is what my light temperature is so that matches the color.
@@TonyMellinger ok got it:) thanks Tony

@@TonyMellinger Alright thanks so much!
I love that most of your videos are EOS R related! Not many others on RUclips are doing that. Would you be willing perhaps to do a video centered on lowlight video performance? For things like 4k vs using the full sensor in 1080p and comparing lowlight performance, and maybe higher iso performance for video as well?
Hey that’s a good idea. I really don’t do a ton of low light so that may be a good video to produce!
Just for reference for you, I was shooting up to 10,000 ISO for this video tho. In the dark reception all near the end. ruclips.net/video/C6EDSCK09lk/видео.html
I have a few ideas for you if you’re interested.
In regards to the reception clip, noise levels look pretty good actually. Was that 4k or 1080? CLOG or a regular picture profile?
Neutral I experience I have to change hue and saturation on as saturated colors becomes to saturated.

when i record on 60fps and 1/125 shutter... i notice there's a screen ripping or stutter... if that makes sense.. so i have to dial down the shutter to 1/100.. any tips why is this?

Thank you!
As always, it's great to revisit previous content as a refresher. I've been hearing that to get the best results in C-LOG, we should probably expose either at "0" or "+1". To overexpose to "+!", does that mean we bump up the ISO or does that mean we bump up exposure compensation? Thanks.
ISO is the best way to raise your exposure. Or open up that aperture if possible.
Correct? Thanks.
