Back when I was a semi-pro pirate duelist (Renfaire stuff, but we knew what we were doing), our captain's favored weapon was the Popcicle. 6' total length greatsword, carbon fiber & closed cell foam, wrapped in a removable drawstring cloth wrapper (hence the name - it was RED). Very similar technique.
It took me way too long to realize those were being added in. I thought the foam sword just had a metal core at first and that’s why it was making that sound.. but as the video drug on I realized they were adding it in anytime anything was hit.

Seeing a sword that huge actually moving around in real life with legitimate German maneuvers looks damn intimidating! Always been a fan of using the giant weapon classes in games, I love that this thing would be so effective in real life if we can only get the weight and durability problems fixed.
I think another big part of why they were never a thing is because of how much metal it would take to produce compared to a regular sized sword. I imagine you could easily produce 10 or more regular sword with the materials used to make just one of those giant swords, so cost effectiveness would be rock bottom regardless of the durability/weight issue.
@@Dovahkiin049 On a battle field, a weapon like that would be utterly useless. It is too slow. and if you knew what you did, it would be easy to make an enemy with that kind of sword, overextend, so you can zoom in close, and deliver the deathblow.
@@palmarolavlklingholm9684 Did...did you not watch the video? The discussion is how effective it'll be at a reasonable weight. We all know it'd be too heavy if made from normal steel. If they could make giant swords a decent weight back then: the reach, mass, and momentum swings of this thing would make it extremely effective as a battlefield weapon. Heck, the science is that a longer blade creates a higher tip speed, so that paired with the greater reach would actually make it the faster weapon, hitting the opponent quicker and while the user is at a safe range. They even point that out, surprised at how fast the thing is despite using lighter and smaller weapons of the same material, even shields that would block most of the body. And despite switching, whoever had the giant sword won more exchanges, so it's not just Shad or Nate being the better swordsman, the weapon itself was the variable.
@@ryuuronin9852 I see your point. But nah, the broadness of the sword would create too much air resistance for it to be an effective weapon, No matter how light it was. You would still need wrists of titanium to properly wield it. But I have nothing against seeing it in Manga/anime. It sort of belongs there, and looks cool.
Shad is seriously living his best life in this video. I'm sure all of us dream of being able to be an adult frolicking in the fields while wielding a giant foam sword.
i love this so much, it's really interesting how the big boi isn't just _not useless,_ but surprisingly very effective for a lot of things, the ability to just ignore a sword guard or destroy a shield is particularly interesting.
The big think is that Shad’s sword to make it light enough to be used and able to be gripped multiple ways means it can be thrust through very easily. The shield sword doesn’t have that problem but doesn’t have the verstality. So, fantasy lightly armored, shield sword and back up weapon, heaving armored, titan sword
@@PJDAltamirus0425 theoretically if you have a functional titan sword you could probably put a light wood or maybe even a sort of stretched chain or gambison material on one side. That way you’re still able to grab the handles and use it effectively but you can’t force a sword through the inside especially if it was partially covered in wood. It would remove some of the versatility because you can only grab the handles from one side but it’s still very Versatile and light without sacrificing defense. If you wanted to use such a weapon to larp or something you could even put a crest on the shielded area similar to a crest painted on a shield.
@@Unsensitive Oh absolutely, you can see just how worn out he is just from a few quick exchanges with the foam version. Now imagine trying to do that with a genuine steel recreation. Now granted, I understand that Shad doesn’t have the ideal physique for a weapon like this but I’m sure we can at the very least use him as a point of reference when imagining how an ideally well muscled individual would handle this sword. Looking at it and basing my opinion on my own personal experience with weight lifters and the sort I would think even they might tire pretty quickly with a steel version of the sword, though I shutter to think what sort of destructive power they could get out of it in a real fight.
@@VidelxSpopovich in all fairness when this would utterly destroy several opponents in a short time frame it the opponents wont exactly feel confident in going after them, not to mention it has range over most weapons, imagine if the said muscleman wielding it is himself like 6’4? Even more range to overcome and a lot of destructive power.
Yeah is is a very good combo so two handed hammer, spear and sword benefits at the cost of much harder to use, if you have the stamina and strength to use it easily it would be scary effective
I always loved how realistic most people in Berserk fight. Half swording and going for gaps in the armor and having stances etc. And then Guts seemed like an interesting fantasy counterpoint to that. What if there was a super human fighting in this wildly unrealistic way with a giant impractical sword. Now even though his sword was still ridiculously impractical, this series has shown that his techniques and just the giant blade in general, weren't as unrealistic as I thought and that's very cool.
There was real historical figure that Guts might be based on and his name is Pier Gerlofs Donia or well known as Grutte Pier (Giant Pier) and he was mentioned to wield 7 ft great sword with such efficiency that he was beheading multiple rank and file opponents with his swings.
This is what you always see when Guts fights ordinary humans. You literally can't defend against his attacks, trying to parry his attacks is literally a death sentence because the Dragonslayer will just break through any attempts at defense, unless you're bigger and stronger than Guts and his Dragonslayer, like most of the Demons in Berserk are. Or in the case of the Godhand, just bend reality to make it impossible for Guts to land a hit.
There's also a lot of debate where even dragonslayer doesn't weigh all that much (300-400 lbs). So someone with his build and stature could swing that with some struggle (considering my mans is wielding that thing with 1 functional flesh arm), the fantasy aspect that came in with the berserker armor, that helped make it make more sense. His Golden age swords (not including zodds thrown to him against the black rhino knight) have probably weighed as much as common two handed long-swords. And Studio 4°c is killing it with making his swords logical.
casca: training and hard work and experience, striving to beat out her larger, stronger opponents with quick movements and thinking guts: drops a giant piece of metal on his opponents
I think a large sword like this would be quite enviable in the beginning because as you guys are showing it's really odd and awkward to deal with. Can you imagine coming across someone on the battlefield with it and you'd never seen it before they don't give you time to like figure out how you're supposed to combat it you're probably just dead before you realize it. Y'all are like strategizing and trying to figure out how to deal with each other.
I think it's fair to strategize against it since if swords like this could exist by what ever logic, it would also be logical to be wide spread, and know someone that uses weapons like this that you can spar with.
Only in fantasy. In reality if it was made of metal, it would be way too slow and unwieldy. The wielder would have trouble raising it off the ground, without falling over, let alone swinging it at a speed that would be at all effective.
@raifthemad I think that was the reason for the repeated use of the term super strength they used. A normal human couldn't do it, but a fantasy super strength one could
@@landonlegrand4328 They not only need super strength, but also fantasy physics, because otherwise, not to fall over, or get pulled along with the sword, they would need two of them, always staying on the opposite side of each other, to balance the contraption they would form, and only move they could make is spin like a blender. :D
One thing I hope makes it into an epilogue for this series are the logistical issues outside of combat: how hard they are to carry long distances, how many calories burned carrying them, how long one can reasonably sustain their use in an extended conflict, how expensive they would be to make historically, so on. A lot of the less 'fun' but still useful stuff for us fantasy writers to play around with.
It would need to be carted around outside of battle and probably a blunt-ish edge for dragging the rest of the time. Maybe a shoulder pad might be needed to hold the weapon up during early engagement?
@@ishtarfolmagi3829that’d be one of the biggest issues; how to handle it with your shoulders. Even with padding and armor it’d dig into your body, even with a blunt edge. As far as transport, that’s what horses and carts are for.
Imagine a sunforged version of the completed design. You could even sunforge the pieces individually so the blades could cut better and the handles could have increased grip or leverage. I thing a master of the sword with that could even give Dalian a run for his money.
@Hey Gek More specifically, sunforging is a process in Shad's book where a mage replaces the matter in an object with a magical material. This magical material will be the same density/weight as the original, but will now be invincible. So, swords are sometimes carved from light wood, like balsa, then sunforged; for a strong, light, long, and impossibly shaped blade.
Do keep in mind, that unless sunforging makes the edge of a blade monomolecular in sharpness, you'll loose cutting power. Two handed weapons benefit more from their mass than having a sharp edge.
I think once the Titan sword is built, it would be really fun to bring out another swordsman/content creator and have them give it a go with no prior testing/experience. Someone like Sellsword Arts could be great (he’d love the meme material).
Remember those swords with one handle and two parallel blades? Imagine something similar, turned into a giant sword, with a thin metal sheet connecting the two curved swords from the base to the tip. Maybe even have a sword made out of wood, and have a metal edge for it, so you have less metal, and thus less weight, but still have the advantages of giant swords. Worth a try, I think, to see how it works.
Thank you for justifying my character with a giant sword in our realistic fantasy setting XD My DM used to be of the mindset that giant swords were useless, but these videos have made them change their mind!
They're never useless, they're just risky. You're trading really useful defensive and evasive ability for a guaranteed offensive ability. You essentially make it so that the worst case scenario is that both you and your opponent die. But all it takes is one opponent to make that trade.
@@CorwinTheOneAndOnly Exactly, my DM was of the mindset that it would be too big to utilize, but now they agree that if you have the strenght then it has the offensive ability to counter the lack of defensive. And since we're playing a TTRGP that in many ways is very realistic (that being riddle of steel), simulating it wasn't hard. So now my character has the ability to cut people in half, but has to rely on dodging for defense.
@@Neptune0404 There's a guy here on youtube that does training with an actual 50 pound berserk sword. He definitely can't do any of these maneuvers, but the big takeaway from his videos is that it doesn't matter. The *point* of a superheavy sword IS the weight. You just need to be strong enough to hold the thing, and you can just let gravity to the work from there. If someone charges you, all you have to do is drop your sword on them, and they WILL die.
Remind me of Kenshin the Vagabond anime. at one point, he explain how, during the war (when he became known as "the Manslayer"), since they were outnumbered, the main tactic was literally to provoke the enemy, then run away to spread them out, and only then to turn back, engage and murder them one by one...
I feel like you guys should get a zweihander expert to help test out the effectiveness of the giant sword for an episode. Because a lot of their techniques may solve some of the problems you and the team had.
Entertaining as hell. The new Team arround and with Shad harmonize very well and naturally. And as a Friend of big swords I am completely interested in that matter👍⚔️
Have to give props on the sound effects during tests. It's a bit uncanny, but it's an excellent way to communicate hits, misses and blocks without being visually distracting.
It looks like you had so much fun here! The mass of the sword either blowing through a block or being so resistant to being knocked aside would be highly dependent on if the sword is heavy or not though; if it was made of a super-light material then it would presumably handle more like a normal sword in these situations.
When I was teen playing AMTguard I built the McCloud FF7 sword. When I presented it to be inspected for safe use the guy laughed and said size didn't matter. "Let me show you", he said. Then I proceeded to destroy him. Basically everything you guys are going through right now was all the older gents trying to figure out why it worked so well. Thanks for the wonderful memory I had forgotten about. ❤
The way you've set this video up in regards to the setting and the costume I feel like I'm watching a semi-fantasy medieval training montage. Two veteran knights in informal dress bantering and discussing their techniques while a bunch peasants/laymen stand around watching them. I love it, keep up the good work, Shad!
I would be curious how it would fare against a traditional Zweihänder, or polearm. The thought experiment turned proof of concept stuff you're doing as a team is so much fun to watch.
Shad has had more than a few tough times recently, so it's great to out see a video where Shad is having fun and doing a load of enthusiastic gushing about sword-based things.
I fought with giant foam swords for about 7 years, i found that keeping a secondary "catching" dagger in your off hand which is used kinda like a gauntley in order to redirect the momentum of the large sword in order to reduce wasted energy. In addition, as you learn to feel the weight of the sword you find you can rotate the large sword around its center of gravity with far less effort then moving the center of gravity so learning to use your footwork to move around the center weight of the blade makes for an easier time positioning the large blade for blocking. The offhand catching blade can also be used for close range surprise attacks when distance is closed.
The giant swords were far more effective than I thought. I thought they would be too slow, but the range combined with the ability to change guards and the challenge with deflecting such a heavy weapon make it far more effective.
They would be way slower than in the video, my buddy is using a foam sword, but managing that amout of steel will make you WAY slower and dont allow any flexibility at all per strike, if you notice most of the attacks he manages to hit is changing the direction of the strike mid attack, which is impossible with a heavy object like that
You have my full attention with this project. Love to see the updates, but fully understand the time it will take. If it gets put off till next summer, make sure you do it right and don't try to rush through the process. Very excited to see the realization of this crazy idea.
You could see the childlike excitement of fighting with new toys here. 😆 The analysis was a lovely cherry on top. Thanks for the update about the titan sword -- I'm actually getting kind of excited for it! 😁
Interestingly enough, that "kung-fu maneuver" that trapped the sword between his arm and knee tells me that the "last clap" maneuver from Stormlight makes a lot more sense with the sort of giant swords they're using. Previously I thought it was kind of unrealistic.
@@FerunaLutelouDawg, don't even remind of that. Yeah, sure, Medea gave a few magical buffs to Kuzuki's speed and strength, but that man *DAWGED* on Artoria with his skills! Like... I REALLY felt bad for her!

Shad keeps creating new functionally complex and competent weapons . Giant swords are awesome, but what’s even better is a Titan sword! A sword keenly built on functionality of giant swords used in fiction. I need more doses of Titan sword videos, and I need a Titan sword of my own. Shad created a back sheath, a book, now a Titan sword! What next, a potion for super powers! Keep up the great videos with Nate and the others, Shad-Sama.
Also, finding Tyranth and keeping him was a miracle. He took oz's spot perfectly and it sucks Marcus had to go but I'm glad you kept Tyranth. Loving the new videos here and on knights watch.
You guys are having way too much fun doing this! It's a delight to watch. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 However, it seems to me that the Achilles heel of the giant sword would be anything other than a wide-open space (trees, walls, large rocks, formations on a battlefield), but it's still really cool that you guys were able to wield them effectively. I look forward to seeing the carbon-fiber giant sword in action!
It makes sense, but I did notice how the most effective attack styles mirrored naginata and other polearm techniques. Naginata often have a bit of a knob on the ishizuki, or butt, so you can do those big circular swings and allow the weapon to be at the absolute limit of reach. I haven't quite gotten through this series of videos, but I'm curious if you'll chosen to add a bit of a flare to the butt of the final sword. Your functional fantasy videos are so much fun. Great work from you and your team, Shad.
Um...They had difficulty blocking it when it was foam...If both swords were metal, even if both users would have superhuman strength...yeah. Blocking would be virtually impossible. Growing weight does not have a linear effect. That's why a giant-sized beetle wouldn't have even half of the strength (relatively to its body weight) as a small-sized one. Not to mention, the smaller weapon would be at a very high risk of being destroyed if you add the full weight of such a giant blade, gravity AND super-human stregth all working together. So, I'll repeat again. If weapons were real and both parties had their strength raised to viable use the giant sword, blocking it would be virtually impossible due to how that increase in weight would affect the interactions.
This channel has just gotten better and better with time, wholly deserving to be the biggest in the community. Always bringing interesting topics, practical tests, and a ton of entertainment value. Good work shad!
The sparing matches were thoroughly entertaining, Along with sound effects and proper maneuvers this was better than half the sword fights we've seen out of Hollywood anyways well done I hope the progress on the titan sword pays off.
The attack pattern of these “colossal swords” is similar to the claymore and zweihander but you gotta use a lot more body weight to physically use the sword and switch only your body to get the sword on your shoulder again this can be seen in games like the soulsborne or monster hunter you can also hold the sword in a way to use it like a shield due to its enormous size so overheads slow side attacks and tackle will work with it
Shad Fact: Those first few swords were - in fact - not foam. They were real, and Shad has bestowed extreme burst healing on his employees. He already had is, of course.
they should also make a single sided giant sword where the handle itself partially goes into the back of the blade, and there is a space between that handle and the body of the blade itself
I baaically thought of this same idea. A good example to look up would be the sword of "ragna the bloodedge" as it's basically exactly what you describe, but it is, an explicitly anime weapon, but the concept is there, also, instead of leaving a hole in the middle of the sword, make "swoops" in the back, against the rod that would act as the "spine" of the blade the the sharp edge would protrude from such that you would have a big "reasonably easy" to grab section in back to grab and manipulate, behind the blade.
Glad to hear you guys are continuing the Titan sword project. Another thing I think worth mentioning with the holes in the titan sword is it's ability to catch another blade, and throw it out of the enemies hands. Because you have so much leverage with the longer handle, if the enemy gets their sword caught in the holes on the titan sword, you should theoretically be able to physically pull their sword out of their hands. As a general rule, this design is amazing. Congratulations Shad.
I was thinking the same thing, but it could also be worse, for example if you stab someone it will be a lot harder to pull out if the handles get caught in anything. So i think the first 20-30cm should be full and not empty.
A couple of years back 'Jairus of All' did a carbon fiber buster sword. While your project isn't exactly a one-to-one, you might maybe get in contact with him to get some build ideas and insight on big sword building. Also, ngl, would be cool to see Shad's crew and him talking wild projects lol
This video made me remember that a few years ago I was actually trying to field test if the fighting style of the Abyss Watchers from Dark Souls 3 is doable in real life, and the results were surprisingly mostly positive despite the seeming impossible dual wield of a two-handed sword and a curved dagger. Since you are wielding a large sword in one hand, the dagger is absolutely vital for defending against opponents as you build up momentum and distance for a big attack. The signature sliding sweep cut surprisingly works as well, although I didn't have the pyhsique necessary for the comeback spin (and obviously not for the sommersault XD). But I'd be curious to see Shad's thoughts on it along with other fictional fighting styles that use big swords with acrobatic movements. In regards to the actual video, the one thing I was missing in terms of testing was the giant sword vs the actual historical zweihander swords. Since those two categories are the closer to each other and most zweihander techniques are very much usable with giant swords as we've seen demonstrated. But doesn't this also mean that a weapon of similar working logic could effectively counter the giant sword? Just some food for thought there. Along that pattern, I'd be very much interested to see a part 2 with assymmetric pairups: that is, giant sword vs not sword weapons. Polearms, flails, axes and so on. Also, floppy tip swords XD
This has me genuinely excited for the titan sword debut. I'm cautiously optimistic about the durability of carbon fiber, but the revelation of exactly how practical a giant sword can be is shocking and seriously cathartic to younger me!!
You know, seeing how you guys fight with the titan swords, it makes me think there could be some validity to the fighting style of Siegfried and Nightmare from the Soul Calibur games. Using the blade as essentially a shield, keeping momentum going, and large quick strikes that would disarm the opponent
Trust me, if this was a more realistic scenario, albeit fantastical, the giant swod guy would kill the longsword guy in a single strike. People think you need to raise the sword to hit but you don't. If you have superstrength, all you need to do is provoke the normal sword user and chop him in half when he tries to go for your gaps.
One note on Tyranth's explanation of the aerodynamic advantage of the wooden "frame" titan sword over the solid foam versions: Although it is very cool that it is easier to move the blade side-to-side through the air, that also means that the sword swinging through the air towards a target will not benefit aerodynamically from the air trying to straighten it as it passes through. I do think that the fact that would not act like a sail is a good tradeoff, but it is something to be aware of.
just want to say i enjoy your sword analysis videos where you test techniques in person, because it gives a clear example of someone normal providing these maneuvers to test real technique
Do you guys mind if I use some of these notes for fighting style designs in a story I’ve been working on? Because at some point giant swords will come up on an adventure and I like to make things practical and realistic

I appreciate that you guys get the historical facts right and help people understand how historical fighting really worked, but also can have fun with “but what if this did exist?” It especially makes it kind of fun for people who also like fantasy combat to see what is still pure fiction and what might be possible. It also makes you think differently about how you’d have to fight from a historical context.
@shadiversity Did you also guys realise with the bigger swords with the bigger thickness, when you were parrying and or blocking, that you were unintentionally using the ground as a point of leverage? As a judo person, who practices using the ground as a point of contact and attack, this makes big swords and the plausibility of using them tenfold because you can hit that sword all you want. When it touches the ground. It will not move an inch as shown in 23:00 to 24:00 in the video. Honestly the coolest thing I noticed and I hope you guys did notice it.

Woah woah woah bro, they're doing very scientific research, I mean look at how historically accurate this is
@@lategamer6684 And Very IMPORTANT Research.
@@palmarolavlklingholm9684 Too much air resistance?
Right, so you definitely didn't watch the video... 26:03
Portable cavalry charge.
So, seems like giant swords are perhaps very effective if you can actually manage to lift and use it.
And have few enough opponents to not wear you out.
With the arcane's anti-grav hextech, it would work
@@VidelxSpopovich in all fairness when this would utterly destroy several opponents in a short time frame it the opponents wont exactly feel confident in going after them, not to mention it has range over most weapons, imagine if the said muscleman wielding it is himself like 6’4? Even more range to overcome and a lot of destructive power.
Yeah is is a very good combo so two handed hammer, spear and sword benefits at the cost of much harder to use, if you have the stamina and strength to use it easily it would be scary effective
I always loved how realistic most people in Berserk fight. Half swording and going for gaps in the armor and having stances etc. And then Guts seemed like an interesting fantasy counterpoint to that. What if there was a super human fighting in this wildly unrealistic way with a giant impractical sword.
Now even though his sword was still ridiculously impractical, this series has shown that his techniques and just the giant blade in general, weren't as unrealistic as I thought and that's very cool.
it drags him along with each swing but if a tiny warhammer can dent plate armour imagine a 300kg slab hitting you the same speed
And Studio 4°c is killing it with making his swords logical.
casca: training and hard work and experience, striving to beat out her larger, stronger opponents with quick movements and thinking
guts: drops a giant piece of metal on his opponents
I think a large sword like this would be quite enviable in the beginning because as you guys are showing it's really odd and awkward to deal with. Can you imagine coming across someone on the battlefield with it and you'd never seen it before they don't give you time to like figure out how you're supposed to combat it you're probably just dead before you realize it. Y'all are like strategizing and trying to figure out how to deal with each other.
I think it's fair to strategize against it since if swords like this could exist by what ever logic, it would also be logical to be wide spread, and know someone that uses weapons like this that you can spar with.
The meta is falling in the floor, and killing the oponent with dagger,
Only in fantasy.

I’m a fan of the new direction with the channel. It’s different, but it still has the same vibe. It also allows Shad to not over exert himself.
Love how they went from all the sophisticated analysis and design work... to now Shad is just like "ALRIGHT TIME TO HIT THINGS! BWAHAHAHA!"
Sometimes ya just gotta fuck around and hit things with big things
Imagine a sunforged version of the completed design. You could even sunforge the pieces individually so the blades could cut better and the handles could have increased grip or leverage. I thing a master of the sword with that could even give Dalian a run for his money.
sunforged?
@@heygek2769 it's something from Shad's book.
True, but a sunforged giant sword like that would run into most of the same issues as sunforged plate armor, most notably the glaring weakness.
Or robinswords, he's pretty good with a Montante.
Seki Sensei would be an awesome crossover~
This aged in a funny way. 😂
Had the same idea, that seems like it would be a good design lol
Actually genius.

They’re useless in that they’d be unusable due to weight and point of balance.

I don't think anyone on RUclips is having more fun that Shad.
The giant swords were far more effective than I thought. I thought they would be too slow, but the range combined with the ability to change guards and the challenge with deflecting such a heavy weapon make it far more effective.
No shit, Sherlock.
@@danielantony1882 get bent
They would be way slower than in the video, my buddy is using a foam sword, but managing that amout of steel will make you WAY slower and dont allow any flexibility at all per strike, if you notice most of the attacks he manages to hit is changing the direction of the strike mid attack, which is impossible with a heavy object like that

Interestingly enough, that "kung-fu maneuver" that trapped the sword between his arm and knee tells me that the "last clap" maneuver from Stormlight makes a lot more sense with the sort of giant swords they're using. Previously I thought it was kind of unrealistic.

It's sort of like the Mike Tyson of swords. Sure, you can block against it and it might not kill you immediately, but you won't be blocking for long.
@@kikixchannel yeh, exactly. You won't be blocking for long. Because it'll punch right through. Like Mike Tyson. Hence the joke.

I'm really excited about this project. Literally no other reason than it's just so damn fun.
they should also make a single sided giant sword where the handle itself partially goes into the back of the blade, and there is a space between that handle and the body of the blade itself
The disadvantage of that is many of those draw cuts would become much less effective
everything after 31:54 is one long commercial for Shad's book and the graphic novel adaptation.
This is fun.
6:15 that's so cool. I can imagine someone animating it and depicting impact and sparks all that cool stuff.
Glad to see you up and about some. Praying for your health, Shad. Love to you and yours, sir!
I totally agree! I was thinking the same thing😁
The added sound effects doubled the quality of this liked and subscribed
This series has been fascinating and fun. I can't wait to see the finished sword!
@@danielantony1882 that's the Guts way. XD
AAAHH MY GOSH I LOVE THESE PRACTICAL TESTING VIDEOS!!!!!!! please do more!!
One note on Tyranth's explanation of the aerodynamic advantage of the wooden "frame" titan sword over the solid foam versions:
Although it is very cool that it is easier to move the blade side-to-side through the air, that also means that the sword swinging through the air towards a target will not benefit aerodynamically from the air trying to straighten it as it passes through. I do think that the fact that would not act like a sail is a good tradeoff, but it is something to be aware of.

Been watch shad for years, adding a team was such a good idea! If only we had some sort of magic metal that was super light.
