Bro, I like how the concept was "look, even a professional strong man has trouble lifting this sword", and he just lifts it like it's nothing. This dude is unreal
Its probably because he works out grip strength, if you workout grip you have way more power in other muscles you've never even used daily and allows you to carry oddly shaped things easier so weight distribution issues arent really a problem you just power through the torque and get to the point where the weight becomes even again when it goes vertical. Like has no one ever used a 18-25 pound sledge hammer?

@Calvados / Rezo it's also likely that in a real-world context the handle would be more of an oval or rectangular shape to help keep the edge as aligned as possible... (as much as it would help a heavy sword)
yeah I was thinking that the blade looks way thinner and probably has a distal taper, as well as the huge chunky handguard pushing the COM closer to the hilt. Ideally in a sword you want the COM to be right on the line between the guard and the blade (or cuff if present) because that's where it needs to rotate to be most effective in an actual fight.

Excellent video. As someone who does fencing and just likes swords and HEMA. The reasons swords have pommels in the first place is to more the center of gravity closer to the wielder's hand. When people buy HEMA weapons, it even specifies how many cm away from the hands the cg is. The fact that your big sword doesn't have a big old pommel definitely a big reason you had trouble.

If you ever revisit this build, here are some potential things to consider: 1. One of the major things that would increase the ability to handle the sword itself is what you’re holding. A completely circular, metal handle allows for some extreme rotation in your hands, something you already battle with such a heavy weapon. Try an ovular handle instead, since it will allow you hands a much more tight and controlled grip. 2. More inline with handle, but this time the material. Try wrapping the handle in some sort of wrap or cloth to further increase friction. It doesn’t have to be a fancy leather weave. Things like hockey tape will allow dividends in improvement. 3. Perhaps controversial, but it may help to make the sword “more” heavy by adding a heavy counterweight in the pommel. Something like a threaded lead one will fight the torque you mention, as it will move the balance of the sword up closer to the hand and allow you much better control. Either way, great video. No one said almost impossible, only that it generated significantly more force in torque than the weight alone would lead you to believe. Realistically it's just like saying "This 150 pound weight is heavy for me, not so much for this dude who regularly lifts heavy things for a living"
This is basically why elite level gymnasts are the top athletes in my opinion, they make advanced body levers look insanely easy, yet that type of training is insanely difficult. Guys who can perform an iron cross have insane straight arm strength, but most guys neglect straight arm strength training because it doesn't exactly lead to big muscle aesthetics. I would love to see if a pro gymnast could potentially wield it even better, but Chase was really impressive.
@@HerroVincey Not downplaying gymnasts at all as they probably have the most *pound for pound* strength out of most athletes. However, as the guy above me said, another factor that makes wielding the buster sword so damn hard is that it weighs a good percentage chunk of the average person and said weight is also awkwardly placed. Someone less athletic, but still reasonably fit, say 7' feet and 250lbs, would likely wield the sword much easier than a world class gymnast who is 5'9" and a solid 165lb of muscle, due to the pure mechanical advantage the taller heavier person will have in this instance.

The weight of the blade would literally cause him to tip over it's fantasy there's no strength about it you have to assume the blade is some crazy material that weighs like nothing
This video made me appreciate Monster Hunter even more. Because the way your character picks up the large sword, he does the same motion and he walks around like he is trying to control it. They really did research.
True, seeing the guy lifting up in 3:03 seems very similar to how its used in Monster Hunter, the sword in MH is thicker and bigger, but everyone on that universe is super strong and the monster materials might be lighter than steel, for example the bone line of swords DB user here, I dont know much about the movement of the GS but for what I saw I believe its close to real life
I always thought it would be cool if someone made a really heavy sword the was double sided because the counter weight would restrict some movements but make it manageable to swing, and if the user got good then it would just shatter other weapons and shields.

he could literally make a holster in the center of gravity of the sword the fact that he turned himself into a real life ironman just to hold a big sword is dedication few people have

Love that moment at 1:22 - We are not even sure if or how exactly we are gonna be able to lift that sword. Let's better make sure it to make it sharp enough to cut paper...
I love how you literally could have just slapped a pommel on it and made the sword a bit smaller to properly use it but you went out and bought a $900 exoskeleton I respect that so hard dude
“What did you do on the weekend Allen?” “I got a giant anime sword and bought an exoskeleton to hold it” “Man, your rent must be pretty cheap if you can buy all that” “What’s rent?”
What’s cool is that you can really see the difference between the natural muscle and the mechanical assist when they swing this thing. The guy with the muscle can actually control the strike better because he’s actually exerting some downward force, i.e. actually “swinging” the sword downward. The machine helps you lift the sword, but provides little to no control on the downward stroke, which means it’s more of a drop that is far more difficult to control because you’re just trying to apply sideways force on a falling object instead of driving the fall with your own strength.
He had to be so sore though, because we see the other strong man try and lift and he has issues. Could be the swords are made differently or one of the strong man was more in shape then the other. This deserves further study.

I would love to see if a pro gymnast could potentially wield it even better, but Chase was really impressive.
@@HerroVincey No way. The sword would probably wield the gymnast. Not enough mass, they'd just tip over.

@@dylanb2990 the term "heavy metals" unfortunately now means two distinct things for different audiences.
Politicians have overused the term a lot the past decade to mean basically any non-structural metal, sometimes even referencing things like lithium which is very much NOT heavy.

This video made me appreciate Monster Hunter even more. Because the way your character picks up the large sword, he does the same motion and he walks around like he is trying to control it. They really did research.
True, seeing the guy lifting up in 3:03 seems very similar to how its used in Monster Hunter, the sword in MH is thicker and bigger, but everyone on that universe is super strong and the monster materials might be lighter than steel, for example the bone line of swords
