The sheer exasperation that Tyranth has for Shad as he's trying to explain all the anime stuff is absolutely hilarious. 🤣 Also, I gotta say I approve of Bundaberg’s Burgundee Creaming Soda (In the bottom left corner at 22:45). My favorite flavor 😂
For a possibly historical example; in one of Musashi's many duels, he fought a guy who wielded a kusarigama (sickle chained to a metal ball). Due to the significant difference in reach, Musashi had to throw his wakizashi at the opponent; it struck him in the chest, which didnt kill him outright, but allowed Musashi to rush in and deliver a final blow with his katana.
Musashi is also a legend, not fact. He is a symbol of complete balance in one’s own ideologies. Now, he most definitely did exist, however, his stories exaggerate overtime.
Thank you for finally proofing this. In an old D&D campaign I was in every time my character did this was a situation where he needed to switch from swords to bow & there was a possibility of losing the shot. First they were hungry, a deer wandered into the camp, throwing the sword in hand allowed dinner to be served. Next it was scouts trying to report us if they were able to get away, somebody fumbled & allowed 1 to get on their horse... sword throw knocked the scout off their horse. DM required multiple rolls & natural 20s saved the day.
I was really doubtful during that scene. After seeing the consistency here Tanjiro would absolutely nail that shot. It's probably one of the more realistic aspects of the show now 😂 Thank you for everything you do, and especially for sharing your beliefs in the past. To make it even better, Tanjiro basically only throws his sword out of spite. The demon is running away because the sun is rising, and that kills them, and Tanjiro is both injured and WAY weaker than this demon, so there's no chance of catching up and doing ANYTHING, much less killing it. So he chucks his sword, impaling him through the back, and basically just shit talks him about how he's a cowardly loser running away from him. It works too, the demon is PISSED. Doesn't stay and burn, but there's a big grudge that I can't WAIT to see play out when Tanjiro works his way up to that level. It's also kind of a big deal that Tanjiro landed a hit against him. FYI, Nichirin is a magic iron ore that intakes sunlight like some kind of plant, which makes weapons made from it (swords, maces, bullets, etc) able to kill demons
In other words, aside from their ability to kill demons, a nichirin blade is pretty much just a normal blade. Against a normal human, it would be just another sword.
Imagine having a blade plunge 8" down into your gut, then the other 40" of sword behind it immediately drops down and levers the tip up inside you. Freakin' nightmare.

Honestly the Breathing Styles in Demon Slayer are a prime example of the Warrior Magic trope you brought up in your "Making knights relevant in worlds with magic" video.
I shall be even more insufferable by pointing out that the technique Tanjiro used was called the hinokami kagura or dance of the fire god... Not flame breathing. Two completely different things
you also need to realize that they are partially trained in Aikido (Samurai hand to hand) and are very core aware. He stands sideways, plants his foot and uses his core traps and deltoids to get a full range of motion. The breathing techniques are even based off of middle way breathing where you exhale as you put the most effort and the pannel/drawing only shows part of the stance but as the Katana is thrown, from the background you will see he maximized the full body range of motion to enhance the technique.
@@1stCallipostle Aikido is something I learned along with Tae Kwan Do from military trained personel growing up. Combining it created Hapkido but the 2 cultures weren't fond of each other due to history. It's good at using minimal points of contact and if you use planted feet, your core guides what you grip. Pressure testing at sparring was intense growing up.

I also don't get why they don't throw a sword way you throw a knife as well. I'm able to throw a knife and have it only do a partial rotation from almost position and stick in target, both over and underhand with standard grip used for fighting with a knife, so no need to even change grip. Only limit is There is a minimum distance, doesn't work when you are to close for the knife to make 180 degree rotation before flying straight. To me that would also make sense with a sword being able throw it without having to change your grip.
Watching you three throw swords in a backyard makes my day. The goofy sound effects make it even better! And Shad trying to deflect like he isn't also a massive nerd is great.
4:03 None of elements appear themselves. It is shown in the manga merely for artistic purposes. For example, the water breathing style focuses on a fluid style of swordsmanship. The fire breathing style focuses on a more aggressive and passionate style of swordsmanship
so its not magic or elements its just styles, but they appear in the anime as an example, if it would be shown as it would see naturaly then there would not be any water or fire
The Visual part is more an Illusion everyone except the Breather does see it but its not the real element(Some elements however are Real like Sun Breathing)
The glow up and expansion of this channel is genuinely refreshing to see. I remember the rants about sword types with shad in a chair and low quality audio. Great video as always ❤ Also, as far as I know, it's Pee-lum. Pilum. 😂
Nice video! For the Katana I would suggest for you to use something like an atlatl grip by putting your index finger in the end of the Katana grip (the flat surface) in order to generate a lever effect, that would generate a lot more of force in the thrown and that will (i hope so...) help in the katana flying a little bit straighter than that.
The thing I like about demon slayer and it's katana's is they are kinda accurate you may think "But they cut through a giant boulder and stuff that's said to be as strong as steel" but the thing is it's not really the katana doing the work, well it is but it's mostly just a object to project and make the breathing technique they use work, the breathing technique amplifies the katana making it able to slice through hard things or block things that might snap a katana, if you mess up with your breathing chips will actually begin to become more apparent in the blade when striking hard surfaces or worst case scenario snap the katana blade. but basically, what this means is you could chop off someone's head with the bluntest of katanas because of the breathing technique it just is realllly helpful to have it sharp.

Shoutout to the cameraman in the glasses, and keep up the great work fellas, honestly always wondered how easy it would be to throw a sword like a javelin, never know when i might need to do so(zombie apocalypse, tax collectors, those kinda things)
The energy and positive vibes in this video is great ,and learning shad could slay someone from a far with a katana is the icing on the cake 🍰 keep up the great work im very grateful
funnily enough, there is actually a scene towards the end of the demon slayer manga where there is a battlefield with an excess of swords where the main character picks up said swords and throws them while holding onto his own to use afterwards. so not only did he most likely train to do so since he did it more than once (that we saw), but the circumstances where he did so were also somewhat likely!
so, one thing i noticed, the katana seemed to be easier to hit then the other sword, and i expected that because the katana like a javalin (if im not mistaken) has it's weight more ahead then the other sword and with the axe technic, of course it worked better with the katana also because of the weight
another next level video honestly i love the chemistry you 3 have this plus your vlogs from england are just great (its nice how genuinely happy and fascinated you are in those videos and as an English man myself its cool seeing places i recognize and take for granted)

Really the best situation to throw your sword at an enemy is outside of combat and the enemy is running away from you. If you hit them but not a killing blow but is enough to incapacitate them, just run to them and finish the job and get your sword back
To be clear, the Demon Slayer magic Katana lore is heavily focused around a particular process to create swords that can inflict lethal wounds upon the Demons which can otherwise heal from virtually any wound and are themselves capable of straight up magic spells known as Blood Demon Arts. Their healing is so insane that some of the most powerful have been shown to throw a punch or kick, have their limb severed below the elbow/knee mid swing and regenerate that limb in time to still connect the blow. The swords are magic so that they can affect something else that is magic, and it's explicitly not just normal mundane Katana making processes from our world that make them magic. The sword wielding techniques they employ are somewhat more questionable however.
I looked it up cuz I was curious and the breathing techniques elemental stuff is all flashiness for style and allegedly it’s literally just sword techniques and nothing else
@@gloomygloomstalker3878 Yeah, the various animation effects are all for show. The raw feats of physical prowess they perform, however, are still well beyond what actual humans could ever achieve. Jumping from the street to the top of a multi story building for instance is simply not something a human can do, yet demon slayers do it on a regular basis. Whether that is just anime fudging the physics for style and they are supposed to be just extremely fit but otherwise normal human achievements, or whether the breathing techniques rise to the level of being their own independent set of supernatural abilities I can't say for sure.
as far as i know Nichirin is a metal that is found on a high off mountain directly exposed to the sun. making it "absorb" sunlight so it can inflict blows onto demons unlike normal iron+ and so bladed weapons. Its the main reason demon slayers have to go to a SPESIFIC place to get a broken blade reforged/replaced because only certain people know how to forge the metal. this was in the manga last i read tho. so take this with some salt.
they pretty much just somehow use a crazy amount of oxygen to "hyper power" the physical limits they have. stuff called "total concetration" is when they breath in a certain way that they are somehow getting the maximum amount they can get at all times even when sleeping. this somehow causes them to "enhance" the physical abilities slayers can do. such as splitting a rock with a katana. or flash stepping in a single instance cutting everything they went past as fast as lighting @@grantharriman284
This whole video just makes me think of Mushoku Tensei where we are explicitly told that one of the sword fighting styles of that world makes use of throwing the sword as a way to take out an enemy. It's not the only thing that fighting style can make use of, it's just one of the options within it's toolbox.
In Demon slayer it's said that the sword breaks because of the swordsman's bad technique. And that's what I think the katana mythology is about, not because it is a katana but because the swordsman is just so skilled
In Gintama the protagonist uses a wooden sword from a gift shop stall at lake toya. It cuts through robots, spaceships, you name it. It breaks once, he has to go and buy a new one.
26:08 Well you gotta remember this wasn't necessarily a battlefield throw when Tanjiro does it, the demon sort of comes in, kills someone important and then runs away. I think in that scenario exactly throwing your sword like this (with the accuracy of anime xD) would be the reason to do it. So it's not necessarily for fighting on a battlefield as it is for taking down a dangerous target that tries to get away.
It's actually based on breathing techniques which has been proved to help with stamina and stuff, the fire and stuff is just effects but the breathing is real, not quiet to the extent of demon slay, kimetsu no yaiba, but it still helps
now do this, but use an atlatl to achieve anime-like strength in the throw :p Also looks like the katana went better because the curve makes it dip down, causing it to dig itself into the target, whereas a regular sword basically only has the tip and after that it just gets more resistance without any advantage from the blade itself.
Great video. Now try using Inosuke(Demon Slayer) serrated katanas since I truly believe those can do lot more damage than a regular katana does since feels a lot worse being cut by a serrated weapon than a clean weapon damage wise.
Could work similar like the tigershark tooth-club Skallagrim featured in his last video. I think the higher risk of getting stuck with the blade will nullify the nastier cutting damage. Still the serrated katana is a cool signature weapon that fits his character.
@@1stCallipostle so lets imagine i see an opponent with clothes that might get stuck in the blade just go for the head or something without cloth? and not every fabric gonna hold that blade and i know that cuz i make clothes, in the end all that matters is the kind of fabric/wool whatever the target is wearingdoesn't
youtube now cuts comments lol...anyway it doesnt matter much if you bleed out of a slash or die in one strike, a serrated blade will do damage to the body and not everyone can fight the pain of a slash to keep fighting
@@rubensantos3489 Here's the thing. You're making workarounds that you just don't need. A straight blade legitimately just does the same job better. Less likely to be impeded, will go deeper when it actually works, smoother to sheath... Meanwhile I see no meaningful advantage to serrated weapons. Hence why nobody has made or used them like ever
We also get a scene of a sword throw in the Last Samurai where in the final battle Tom Cruise on horse back throws a katana straight into the chest of Tom Goldwyn. So I guess you guys need to do it on horse back now
I’ve been training people in throwing weapons including swords for years. And the second throw(the one that stuck) was exactly how you want to do it. Especially with longer spears and swords it’s a very unintuitive and weird throw, javelin is probably the best way to describe it. You push up as you’re moving forward(increases distance, so you don’t have to add as much force which can make your throw unstable)and you have to really focus on keeping the sword straight, which usually means that your arm when fully extended isn’t actually in front of you but slightly pointing out to the right a little bit(left if left handed)Any movement left or right gets amplified when you release and turns the weapon in the air. So if you do more of a traditional throw, say a baseball or football type of throw and you’re right handed, you’re gonna see the handle of the blade shoot left. If you push forward too hard generally the blade aims a bit to the left and you don’t get quite as much turn, but enough that the point is no longer straight. Which is why you push up for distance, with a weapon like a spear that’s made to be thrown you just keep it straight, throw it hard and it goes right where you want it too. With a sword you have to go for a bit of an arc. The main key is to let the swords weight do the work. If you force it it will not fly straight. Another thing I’ve found that adds some stability but isn’t super easy to do is to actually roll your fingers very gently under the handle or shaft of a spear as you throw it, using the spin to add some stabilization. Of course I think the best way to throw swords, not obviously efficient in a combat scenario is just to spin it like you would a knife.

This entire video put a big stupid grin on my face. Thanks for some great entertainment guys.

I didn't know you were an anime fan. Another reason to follow this channel.
I was really doubtful during that scene. After seeing the consistency here Tanjiro would absolutely nail that shot. It's probably one of the more realistic aspects of the show now 😂 Thank you for everything you do, and especially for sharing your beliefs in the past. You're doing really important work in that regard. Love you guys 😊
Tanjiro would nail that shot at like 50x the range here MINIMUM.

Love this topic. The idea of a guy throwing his sword is just as/ if not more fun than the idea of someone throwing their pistol
Like it's bragging rights for him, and shame for the demon.
All this happens in the movie Mugen Train, which takes place right after season 1. It's a REALLY good movie too. MMMMMMH. Shad would cry watching it. Some REAL cutting moments, I cry every time too.

Honestly the Breathing Styles in Demon Slayer are a prime example of the Warrior Magic trope you brought up in your "Making knights relevant in worlds with magic" video.
Has anybody else figured out that? This is just top gear for swords?
I love how insufferable Shad is right at the start of everything! 🤣🤣🤣 his ball busting was on point here!

I want to see professional ax or knife throwers or even dart throwers try a bunch. I think the viability is way higher than this video would indicate.
@@aj.j5833 I mean they are trying to imitate the sword throwing done in an animation adaptation of a manga story at first.

YES! I've been waiting for this!

Also, as far as I know, it's Pee-lum. Pilum. 😂
I love how Tyranth is just "here we go again" with their initial rant on how much of a weeb he is.
I loved everything about this. This was the greatest episode so far. You guys have such a good dynamic and just watching you guys have fun was amazing.

The energy and positive vibes in this video is great ,and learning shad could slay someone from a far with a katana is the icing on the cake 🍰 keep up the great work im very grateful
Love the sound effects
funnily enough, there is actually a scene towards the end of the demon slayer manga where there is a battlefield with an excess of swords where the main character picks up said swords and throws them while holding onto his own to use afterwards. so not only did he most likely train to do so since he did it more than once (that we saw), but the circumstances where he did so were also somewhat likely!
Looll the sound effects were perfect for this
so, one thing i noticed, the katana seemed to be easier to hit then the other sword, and i expected that because the katana like a javalin (if im not mistaken) has it's weight more ahead then the other sword
and with the axe technic, of course it worked better with the katana also because of the weight
Yes, the curve in thr blade makes the weight of a katana farther forward!
18:35 I love how tyranth noticed he kept hitting the backdrop accurately with point in, so he just took a step back rather than changing his throw.

"You need your sword to sword the whole time you're swording."- Nate. Based and True.
Really the best situation to throw your sword at an enemy is outside of combat and the enemy is running away from you. If you hit them but not a killing blow but is enough to incapacitate them, just run to them and finish the job and get your sword back
"You need your sword to sword for the whole time you're swording." Amen, brother. Truer words have never been said.
I really enjoyed the banter in this video. Really fun and wholesome. Thanks for confirming this as a potentially viable, if niche strategy.

In Demon slayer it's said that the sword breaks because of the swordsman's bad technique. And that's what I think the katana mythology is about, not because it is a katana but because the swordsman is just so skilled
The swordsmith chief actually says swords break cause the smith is shit.

Loving the production quality. The added sounds are a bit too loud though.
I love Katanas!
It's actually based on breathing techniques which has been proved to help with stamina and stuff, the fire and stuff is just effects but the breathing is real, not quiet to the extent of demon slay, kimetsu no yaiba, but it still helps
now do this, but use an atlatl to achieve anime-like strength in the throw :p
Also looks like the katana went better because the curve makes it dip down, causing it to dig itself into the target,
whereas a regular sword basically only has the tip and after that it just gets more resistance without any advantage from the blade itself.
I love your "throwing weapons" videos, mates. Would love to see more!

Very fun video guys! I love seeing y'all mucking about with abstract weapon concepts
A serrated weapon is gonna be complete ass the moment you fight someone wearing any kind of clothing.
It's just gonna get bunched up immediately
This was a lot of fun to watch!
Just a random thought, how affective would using the sheath or Saya be as some time of last ditch effort?
Depends what its made of.
Just the sheathe? Probably terrible. A sheathed sword as like a club? Probably pretty decent.
We also get a scene of a sword throw in the Last Samurai where in the final battle Tom Cruise on horse back throws a katana straight into the chest of Tom Goldwyn. So I guess you guys need to do it on horse back now
How many Mugen train demons have European swords successfully stopped? None.
Just you wait, is all I have to say about that. LOL
