Lifesaver video !!! Fixed the Cello string in 5 mins when my son just unstringed his Cello before his weekly class in the lockdown.... I don't know what would I have done otherwise ....
Thank you this was very simple had all the relevant information and I was able to effortlessly change my strings in a matter of minutes (and followed another video on bridge placement).
Just bought a cello 🎉 also, just broke a cello string 🎉 that's ok though because I just bought 2 more full sets🎉 now I can break an additional string on Sunday and have another to replace once I finally learn my lesson on not over tightening my strings🎉 no regerts
@@CelloCoach Or even so an Electric Bass, you can use a Bass Guitar String winder to get the Yamaha SVC-210 Strung up in a Breeze. My idea was to play Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major on the Cello & I was wondering if you can help me with that one.

Very clear viduo, thank u so much i was a scared of even thinking in changing strings myself, u made it look so easy, glad i found this viduo, one question, can the technique be applied to all string instrument or just Cello? still new to string instruments
When we loosen and/or tighten two torqued objects that are not secured to one another , we should start via the exterior fasteners and then move inward, or vice a vera. The bridge is not secured to the cello, and when tighten one side, the other side will give way just a bit. My counsel is tighten the exterior strings first when tuning after a strings change or loosen them first when initializing a strings change. This is a carry over concept from my experience rebuilding internal combustion motors that is as valid with wood as it is when metal, because torque makes not mind of your material.
I gotta adjust my bridge a little bit when I do this carefully. Replaced it once and the soundpost wasnt compromised thankfully. I work with stained glass so I'm fairly decent with delicate measures (with or without a hammer >:)
My husband says its no big deal to change the strings one at a time on the cello. I'm always afraid I'm going to mess up the sound post or the bridge or something big like that! So, if you change the strings one at a time like you showed us none of that will happen? Oh an what is the bran name on the string that is wrapped in red? Thanks again for your help!! Have a great day Jonathan!!
Thank. Q so much so basically what happened is my original string came out and I was not replacing it with a new one I just had to put the original back im! Now i wont get in trouble!
I had my cello stringed by someone else, the last couple of winds on my A string criss cross over each other essentially preventing me from unwinding it, so I've only got about 2-3cm of give where the string is still wrapped (before the string goes over the nut and down the fingerboard), and then it goes under a section itself being wound on top. If that makes sense. All my other strings are coiled neatly and don't cross over one another (with the exception of where it's threaded through the peg) and I have a much easier time tuning those, whereas my A string is super taut and won't hold. Should I attempt to rewind it? I feel like this issue is making my A string really difficult to tune.
Hello Jonathan, How do you arrange the strings as they were at the beginning of the video?1 I wander if the brand new strings take some time before they stay in tune. I was lucky to get a set of Thomastik Spirocore as a gift and after changing them, I've noticed that they don't stay much in tune. (this is the first time ever that i've changed the strings) I did as you mentioned to make them cross once and then kept them tense while rolling the peg. I must say that they really do make a huge difference comparing to the old generic ones.
hi, how can I tell the difference between the A string and the D string. I broke the D string and had my old strings but didn't label them. I can tell which one are the C and G, can you tell me the difference? thank you.
Jargar (medium tension) if there are affordable. This is the standard in my studio and in countless luthiers worldwide. Simply put: concerning cello strings, anything Danish.
Omg i just noticed the pegs of my cello are made of kinda soft kinda hard wood.. (its my first cello) the strings kinda left indentations where they have been wrapped around the peg and may break from pressure.. this sucks cuz theres only one person in my whole country that is a luthier and has a shop and may get me new ones, which i suppose would be expensive for me (i live in the third world).. on top of that who knows what happened to him since the quarantine as many businesses have closed. sometimes i think a violin would been the right choice for a string instrument, i imagine they are easier to take care of..
Hi Fernando, this comment is a little late but you should be able to order cello pegs online- just check that they are from a reputable seller. If postage is a problem given your location, then maybe you could look into mending the pegs? So off the top of my head that might be sanding down the grooves (NOT the end of the peg) so that they are smooth, or filling the grooves with a resin or a substance that acts like wood. If all else fails, respond to this comment and hit me up on reddit and I will purchase and post you new pegs.
Check the location of the string hole. If the string hole is too close to the far wall of the pegbox, the string going through the hole will block the peg from being pushed into pegbox any further, and the peg will slip. A new string hole may have to be drilled. It should be situated about half way between the pegbox walls when the peg is in it's proper position.
Of course you can. Also I wouldn't recommend loosening twoi strings at the same time. Do one after the other. If only one string breaks, change only this one. Only buy strings on amazon if they are good qualitiy (like Larsen or Spirocore) and you find a deal there. Other than that: stay away. x
Cool! How would you recommend buying my first strings because I have been playing almost a year and I don’t know if I should spend a good bit of money on great strings or if I should just try something decent like jargar or helicore.
Decent, if you have been playing on simple strings that you cannot identify. I recommend Jargar Mediums amzn.to/2KoNFlh (best price @ 83.95 US$, with fulfillment by Amazon)

Jonathan Humphries How do you replace strings on a Yamaha SVC-210 with geared tuning machines?
Just like a guitar, you need to turn the pegs longer, that is it.

It could be applied to other instruments, but don't hold the string too torque on a violin.
Why did you say to start with the outer strings then proceeded to change the D string? Kinda confusing.

Red? the 4th string, C string? Thomastik Spirocore - amzn.to/2sSsWyK
My brother snapped my A string, and so the bridge is not aligned anymore. How do you suggest replacing all my strings with the bridge already moved?
Carefully move the bridge back to its place by the feet. You should see where the feet were.
Well he stopped that.
Sophia S. The Bridge is finally aligned.

I don’t know if you have an answer for this but a little bit of my string busted is there a certain tape I could use to put it back together?
And how much does the tape cost
Do you have to loosen the end pins before you take out the string??

Yes, the strings take a little while to settle in.

C string is thicker. They are colour coded at the end too.
Oops, misread. A is thinner than D
❤se ve muy interesante lastima que no entiendo porque no hablo inglés 😢
it's all good
thanks a ton!
You are welcome!
Why do you need to overlap once when winding the string?
The string is too long. Overlapping will save space. Good question, needs a video response!
Does it matter which way round the string is put in? e.g. the direction it's coiled when it arrives or the opposite way?
Yes, string it the direction it's coiled.
ITS WINTER BREAK AND MY D STRING SNAPPED- AND I NEED TO PRACTICE THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH
thanks dude
No problem!
My little ball at the end of the string broke off... is there a way to fix that?
There is not, sorry.
gratitude
What cello strings do you recommend most?
Jargar (medium tension) if there are affordable. This is the standard in my studio and in countless luthiers worldwide. Simply put: concerning cello strings, anything Danish.
Larsen and Spirocore. But it really depends on your Cello. Larsen is always good to go (very expensive though).

I’m 13 and I managed to do it
I can't get the A string in tight enough , it keeps slipping back

Cello strings are expensive af
yes they can be
First you strung the peg when it's out of the cello. Then you strung the peg when it's in the cello. wtf?
