- "Hail, Queen of Heaven, the Ocean Star" is a Marian hymn written by Father John Lingard, a Catholic priest and historian, in the 1700's. Loosely based on the medieval Latin plainchant Ave Maris Stella, the hymn is generally sung to the modified traditional English melody Stella published in 1851 by Henri Frederick Hemy.
A ship was an early Christian symbol. The word "nave", used to describe the main body of a church, is from the medieval Latin word navis, meaning "ship", possibly with some reference to the "Ship of St Peter" or the Ark of Noah.

I remember singing this hymn and others similar up to 10th grade. I was in a Catholic all boys boarding school for HIgh School. Faculty was all priests. All of a sudden, hymns like this were ridiculed by the priests as mawkish, syrupy, over-emotional, sentimental schmaltz. SCHMALTZY HYMNS. So we threw those away and what did we get? Ray Repp, Sebastian Temple, Lucien Deiss, St. Louis Jesuits, ad nauseam. Nowadays, the worst thing about Mass in the average parish is the music. The old schmaltz is a lot better than the new schmaltz.

Our congregation like a mix of contemporary & traditional. It works for us. There are some amazing composers out there now....
@@cathybennett2415 I was going back to the late 60s and the 70s in my examples of composers. I agree that there are better things out now, but in the places where i have been in the last 20 years, the musicians are stuck in the 70s with the st louis jesuits, and a few other things just as bad. So much of it is not liturgical, and it is even bad music. Most places no one sings. They have someone playing a piano or something, and one person blaring into a microphone. When one person is singing into a mike, it is impossible for the congregation to sing because they cannot hear themselves or each other. Moreover, lots of it is schmaltzy, and man-centered. Lastly, it is all keyed for sopranos.
Yes, it's true, what you say. The church was hijacked by the religion of humanism. I remember when I was a boy, I was an acolyte on the altar at Mass. My parents were always careful only to attend the Latin rite Mass of the ages. I didn't know why, I didn't know anything about the Vatican 2 takeover of the church by the deep state or anything like that, being a boy. It was only much later, as a man that I learned about that. But I remember the whole congregation would sing Hail queen of heaven on Our Lady's feast days after mass, and we(my fellow acolytes and I) together with the priest, we would all sing, and turn towards the tabernacle and genuflect as a sign of reverence to the real presence of Christ, before coming down from the altar in procession. That was the real form of worship, the solemn reverence that is shown to the majesty of the one true God who died for us... It is slowly returning, I believe. The church can never die, it is eternal... God bless❤
