    If you have tightness in throat and neck when talking or if your throat feels strained when talking, this video will give you insights about what is really going on inside your throat. I help people with throat tension when speaking due to Muscle Tension Dysphonia or other functional voice problems, and I teach them how to release throat tension. There are two important concepts that you need to pay attention to during throat tightness treatment in order to truly know how to relieve throat tightness. It is not enough to drink plenty of water or go on a vocal rest. Tightness in front of neck or inside your neck will not go away if you just wait and do nothing. So, watch this video and learn how to effectively deal with this problem.

      I get throat tightness quite often. It has been blamed on relux (LPR). I also have MS so maybe be that. Can’t seem to get an answer. I took speech therapy that helped to loosen muscles around neck quite a bit. But throat tightness occurs quite often still

      Yeah, I’m a music teacher and singer, and have been facing vocal tension for years. I believe this can change, I’ve just yet to find what will reverse this. (Showers, warm drinks, and SOVT straw exercises are somewhat helpful). I believe there is a physical component with technique, over usage, posture, diet, possible silent reflux, etc… and I think there is an emotional component, as well. I’m currently trying to find a medical hypnotist, because I think it’s mostly a neurological thing for me. Has anyone had experience with this?

    I am a classical singer and never have fatigue when singing even after a 4-5 hour practice session. But ten minutes talking and I’m croaky and tight and even hoarse. I have tried To talk more like I sing and it definitely helps but it’s hard because I have to concentrate to do it. Thank you for this video!

    • @jenniferzuiff8517
      @jenniferzuiff8517 2 года назад +2

      I experienced the same thing years ago when I sang classically as well. I wonder if it’s because we are so used to having such strong and powerful head voices but not as equally strong chest voices which is where our natural speaking voices like to live causing an imbalance.
      Perhaps it’s from using these different head voice dominant muscles, ligaments and cartilages like the cricothyroid muscle (CA) vs our chest voice dominant ones that create this imbalance and for some of us sopranos cause hoarseness in our speech.
      This is my educated guess on the science behind it. So the solution is: strengthen your chest voice like a Spartan to balance everything out. I did that and I hardly ever (knock on wood) ever experience this hoarseness hell ever anymore. This is what worked for me Tokki, maybe it can for you? I’d love to hear Katarina’s thoughts on my theory.
      However, I no longer sing classically anymore unfortunately but I sing my own music instead.

    • @tokkia1384
      @tokkia1384 2 года назад +1

      @@jenniferzuiff8517 yes that is possible. I have always been very head-voice dominant even before I learnt to sing formally, I intuitively sing with a lot of head voice. I have paid attention to other sopranos’ speaking voices and noticed many of them to have croaky lower speaking voices (Renée Fleming!). Using more support in chest voice is very counter intuitive but should help as you say. Or alternatively I might just learn to talk like Julia Child 😂 she sounded like if opera was talking 😆

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  2 года назад +4

      @@tokkia1384 yes, you are onto something for sure. I would agree with the difference in support. Many people who have problem in their speaking voice use different muscles and less support when talking. Also, the shape of the vocal tract and the vocal fold closure can differ, which may cause hoarseness and vocal issues in the speaking voice. The truth is that we use the voice differently when singing classically and when speaking. But the solution would not be Julia Child's voice!!! 😂

      When I speak I am hitting the words so hard everything is squeezed, with little power and I run out of breath easily. I have been under a speech therapist for 4 years with little improvement. When I put a H or S in front of words, they are a little softer, however I cannot maintain this in general conversation. Any background noise kills my voice altogether so I have to shout louder just to get a weak voice which speeds up fatigue. It's ruined my life if I am quite honest and spend most of my time by myself when not working as it eases my frustrations to a degree....but then at the same time I am not living life. It's horrible.

    That's just me. Feeling strangled since chilhood. Feels worse in public. I made some kind of research and finally (at 56) tumbled on TMJ problems and bad position of the tongue
    I'm currently trying to re-educate myself since no doctor would go further than a quick antibiotic prescription (you said you have a sore throat) or neuroleptics or Xanax (so not only have I constricted throat but slurry speech as well, that's what they call a cure).
    I KNOW it has to do with stress and a bad tongue position
    I can sing to myself but not in public. People often tell me I have an irritating "whining child's voice" but I don't have it when I record a podcast all on my own in the safety of my home.
    I've been mewing for one year now and things are a little better, but I'm 57 already.

    I am a radio newsreader. I sit in studio and have to put the AC off as i often feel restriction in reading news. The words are not fully pronounced. It seems as if one or two words are half pronounced in every other sentence. As this causes consciousness , so i read news with less confidence when i feel this problem. Why is this problem ? Without AC in such condition i can overcome this problem a bit better.
    Further , my voice improves after i read two to three items. The problem lessens with the use of voice.
    The voice is rough , not smooth even a bit hoarse in the morning. Better in the afternoon or night.
    Another surprising thing is that all these problems i face in the studio room. My voice is clear and powerful outside the studio and in normal talking.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  2 года назад

      It could be a few things. The first thing that comes to my mind is your stress level in the studio room. Stress can easily influence your confidence. Also, you becoming more conscious how you speak will loop back and influence the freedom of your voice. I cannot be sure but I would recommend doing some mindfulness and meditation activity so that you learn how to manage stress. I would also speak to a voice specialist just in case.

      It's not ridiculous. It is common for many people. It may take some practice to find a sustainable way of saying a script out loud. The question is if the sound you are making is sustainable for the work you do. If you use that sound occasionally and you have time to rest your voice, it may be ok. if you are going to use that sound for prolonged periods of time, maybe you need to change something. I would focus on the amount of muscle effort you are using when making the sound. Can you make the same sound using less effort? Can you anchor more in the body to release tension from the throat? Can you open your throat more to counteract the constriction?

      Have you had your voice evaluated by a laryngologist? Start there. There are things you can do to release tension. Once you know how your voice functions and what it looks like, you can then take the next steps.

      I am sorry to hear that you are dealing with throat issues. But there is help. There are many things that can release throat tension. My channel has videos on these topics and I also recommend that you work with a voice therapist to help you release the tension.
