    Description Source:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Drift
    Power Drift (パワードリフト?) is an arcade game released by Sega in 1988. A racing game, it made high use of sprite-scaling to create a 3D effect, similar to contemporaries Out Run and Hang-On.
    Gameplay
    Twelve drivers from all walks of life compete in this racing game. The object is to finish each race in third place or better in order to advance to the next stage. Player have the option of continuing if they finish the race in fourth place or lower before the game is over.
    Courses
    The tracks have a roller coaster feel to them, with lots of steep climbs and falls, as well as the ability to "fall" off higher levels. To add to this feeling, the sit-down cabinet was built atop a raised hydraulic platform, and the machine would tilt and shake quite violently. Each circuit, labeled from "A" to "E" has a certain theme to it (for example, circuit A has cities, circuit B has deserts, circuit C has beaches, etc.) in a series of five tracks. There are also four laps for each course. Course A was Springfield Ovalshape, Foofy Hilltop, Snowhill Drive, Octopus Oval and Curry De Parl, Course B was Swingshot City, Phantom Riverbend, Octangular Ovalshape, Charlotte Beach and Highland Spheres, Course C was Bum Beach, Jason Bendyline, Nighthawk City, Zanussi Island and Wasteman Freefall, Course D was Mexico Colours, Oxygen Desert, Jamie Road, Monaco Da Farce and Blow Hairpin, Course E was Aisthorpe Springrose Valley, Patterson Nightcity, Lydia Rightaway, Bungalow Ridgeway and Karen Longway, The two extra stages with Courses A,C and E resemble an Air-Flighter from After Burner II and Courses B and D resemble a superbike from Super Hang-On.

    I remember playing this in the arcade when I was 9 and lasting about 30 seconds. The sheer three dimensionality of it all was more than my tiny mind could stand, at the time. The sheer audacity of Sega, at the time, absolutely obliterating graphical boundaries, over and over again, in the 80's and 90's was gobsmacking. Happy 60th birthday, you crazy, wonderful geniuses, you!

      Chris Butler's C64 conversation was pretty sprightly but had the advantage of only having to shove around 2K of data versus 16K like the Amstrad or Atari ST. Chris always did pretty keen arcade conversions, though - about the only downside is the murky graphics combined with the C64's murky palette.
      Still pretty involving once you start playing.

    The coder of Amiga and Atari version was ZZKJ, the same that made super hang-on, that instead is revered as a blazing success; however i think that ZZKJ did not use the custom chips as he should; i dont know any decent Amiga program emulating the bubbles technology properly, excluded maybe the dragon level in Unreal...

      Pity Drivin Force uses the traditional race rendering replacing tiles with the street instead of mapping a full 3D environment like Power Drift (so more like Outrun arcade), but shows we can have more tiles smoothly than PD did

    Agreed ! The power of the Amiga was grossly under utilized. But I hear so many people bashing the Atari ST. It wasn't a bad machine but like the Amiga it was not pushed to it's full potential. Much like the Sega Genesis. near the end of it's life it had some amazing games with some good programming effects. Like Gunstar Heroes & Castlevania Bloodlines just to name a couple.

  • @wingnut4427
    @wingnut4427 12 лет назад

    Thank you. I know it doesn't reflect too well in the video but the Dreamcast version is identical to the Saturn version. But both are great. The Dreamcast version however contains a few more things that make it more accurate to the Arcade. Like the original title screen. This is why I don't like to do live recordings. :(

    I feel that Power Drift was a great arcade experience at the time. The moving cabinet, Sprite scaling technology and booming sound really made for an exciting time. However, I always felt it lacked substance, or a certain something, especially compared to the likes of similar Sega greats, namely Space Harrier, Outrun and Afterburner. I think this is why the stripped back 8 & 16 bit conversions don't fare very well.

  • @MrLtia1234
    @MrLtia1234 10 лет назад +9

    The c64 version is better than I remember! Given the Hardware, that's a real achievement. Turbo Charge is another great one on the c64.
    A bit unfair on the Speccy straight after the arcade - especially as with other videos it's the cut down 48k version and not the full version. I've never seen the cpc version, and was expecting something a bit better - more colourful speccy version at the very least, but in some ways it's actually worse. c64 definitely comes out on top with the less powerful machines and even the PC version is worse!
    Obviously at this point in time it was getting a bit silly with the arcade conversions to old hardware. Looks like the only 'current' machine that could pull it off was the PC Engine... sort of.

    • @rexthesheep
      @rexthesheep 10 лет назад +1

    if Power Drift was converted on Amiga in 1990's onwards
    it would be a better port since it's a late 1980's conversion
    game developers didn't fully understand Amiga's hardware
    in the 1980's most Amiga games were created using the ST
    in 1990 game developers learnt how to code Amiga games

    The Dreamcast & Saturn versions were the best even though the sound was off in both of them. Now we have the M1 ripper why for the latest ports they have to result to recording rather than rip I don't know.
    Both would have been arcade perfect if the sound was perfect.

    The Amiga and ST version are just a static pale idea of the coinop.They are clearly superficial ports,listlessly programmed so the results could have been only soulless.The scarce graphics detail doesn't justify the heartquake slomo gameplay and the absolute missing of any smoothness and speed feeling,those aren't roads but stairs!In the C64 version the game essence is all there and working and the racers even look back just like in the original coinop,which means attention to (style) details.

      The Amiga and Atari ST versions are somewhat better when played on a machine with something faster than the stock 7.14/8mhz amiga500 or atari st 520.
      The way the graphics are organized onscreen is still a bit messy, but speed and smoothness definately improves.

    l will remedy my last statement the c64 version is the best version, the amstard comes across well since its bright and colorful has game sounds missing from the c64 ie engine sound, crashing noises etc
    i find the absence of game sound, something off an annoyance with some c64 games this is one of thous games. id rather kill the music for game sounds, the lack off creates a disconnect for me
    other than that everything is more accurate to the arcade than any off the other 8 bit computer versions.

    This game is so bad... I am happy it was not getting "AGAIN" a release... frankly what the fuck why it should have been ?!? The game is ugly from the Arcade to the Dreamcast.... only the Saturn version managed to be better then the arcade version.But still LoL. I know there is a bunch of nostalgic out there but please you can admit it it was and still not playable and ugly!!
