Games like this make you love early Sega. Both the SMS and GG versions of this game might not have arcade-perfect graphics, but the designers knew the limitations of their hardware and worked to make a smooth and playable game which I think is much more important than filling the screen with scaled sprites and slowdown.
The FM Towns version looks great. Admittedly it presumably had some custom graphics hardware, but the CPU was a 386DX, so I wonder how a PC version would have fared. Oh, and maybe the Saturn port wasn't bugged: maybe the voice actress for Nancy was just getting paid by the word ;)
Let me add to the long list of people disappointed that you used the inferior 48k Spectrum version. The 128k version was much better, with better music, sound effects, speech, and animated intros. It is generally considered one of the best Spectrum games ever. As for that Japanese Nancy - she just will not shut up will she!? LOL
"FM Towns" (full name: Fujitsu Microcomputer Townes, the latter was the development project codename, abbreviated to a spelling that didn't contain "NES") seems to be essentially a 386 PC (more recent versions had 486 or low-tier Pentium) with graphics comparable to VGA and sound board. The late models could run Windows 95. Therefore its graphics hardware isn't too impressive for 16-bit consoles, but at least the CPU is quite beefy. I hadn't known anything about that machine and had to google it; from the name, I'd assumed to be a late product of Tandy *Radio Shack* !
yeah it's a PC.... it just happened to have a decent at the time custom GPU and sound card. If you compare it to rubbish VGA cards and adlib sound cards on the market for PC's at the time.
@@achtsekundenfurz7876 I disagree it's graphics were pretty good. It had hardware zooming. Hardware sprites, Bitplane hardware scrolling. 32 thousand colours on screen mode. At the time PC graphic adaptors were either EGA or VGA with one hardware sprite if you were lucky. For the mouse cursor! It's just that PC hardware CPU mainly and GPU's caught up and overtook the hardware stuff of the FM Towns in a short time. When using at full power the 386 Marty could do better ports of games than a 486 pc with a stock generic (trident) etc... graphics card could ever hope to achieve.

That's because he used the 48K spectrum version instead of the 128K. What the game lacked in colour, was made up with in near arcade perfect gameplay...and to me, gameplay is the most important factor in games, especially when it comes to arcade conversions

I'm hoping to get back to this as soon as possible. I hope You guys enjoy this video. BTW. The Saturn version had a glitch that kept repeating the same sound track so "Nancy" wouldn't shut up. sorry about that. I tried to fix it but no dice. :(
the only one that this was not converted to was the Mega Drive, instead the Mega Drive had a Chase HQ 2 where you where able to choose between different vehicles for each stage and you could judge which one was the best vehicle to use depending on what vehicle the criminal was using in that stage
I remember on the A500 continuing rapidly pressing the spacebar just before the start lamp went green and Hyperspeed through the whole level, ending with the A500 black screen of death with the red software failure error box.
While the spectum's version had horrible GRAPHICS (not so much the graphics themserlves, but the lack of color) it made up for with near arcade perfect gameplay, and gameplay is always the most important thing in games, especially when it comes to arcade conversions ARCADE PERFECT GAMEPLAY IS ALWAYS 10 BILLION PERCENT MORE IMPORTANT THAN GRAPHICS

The C64 version was a shameful tragedy that should never have happened, in the right hands it could have been by far the best 8-bit version of the game. It should have looked like a cross between Turbo Outrun on the c64 and CHQ version on the Master System
Everything about that port sucked, from the sounds right to the gameplay and the fucking GREEN ROAD. Jesus Christ. Luckily the sequel was actually pretty good on the C64, but the original was just lazy programming at its worst.
I don't know how they could mess up the C64 version so badly! Even the Amstrad version looks so good in comparison. Also Famicom and Master System versions look much better. The C64 version looks almost like a Spectrum version which usually is the case with Amstrad versions of games...
It's pretty sad we could not get a decent console port outside of the computers here in the US. The reason could be because of the same issue that stopped Chase HQ from appearing on Taito Legends -- car licenses and likenesses needed to be re-acquired.
Oh, no! Why haven't you played the Spectrum 128 version? With full 4-channel (extremely rare!) music by Jonathan Dunn (much better than Atari ST, NES and C64 versions). I also have a modified version for Yamaha FM sound chip with different music and speech samples.
but like Super Chase HQ on the SNES, Chase HQ 2 (not to be confused with the true sequel from 2008) adopted an original storyline instead of using the one in the arcade.
great video man i love this game on the arcade. IMO i would have to say the Arcade in the best followed very closely by the FM Towns,i wasn't that keen on the look of the Saturn version- the car looked a bit cartoonie for me. the Amstrad version is awesome
Interesting video, I remember being bitterly disappointed with the C64 version at the time. I wonder why SMS, NES, GG and TG16 versions all sort of glitch out when you reach the junction?! Maybe they're all from the same half finished code-base. Also the X68000 version is shockingly bad for such a powerful system
Was that the 48k version or the 128k version for the Spectrum port? I remember the 128k version added some title screen music, digitised speech, animated logo etc.
I've got a lot of stuff to do & others as well. I haven't got a lot of time to do videos at the moment. So I'm limited on how soon I can get videos out.
The C64 version was just unforgivably crap. As a six-year-old I was captivated by this game in the Butlin's arcade one long summer in 1989. I was so excited to get it for my Commodore after we returned home from that holiday. The ensuing disappointment incurred after the tape loaded can only be described as "devastating".
Commodore comes out of this badly. Shame on the C64 and Amiga - my two fav computers but they got a totally naff port here. Very strong showing for the Speccy and Amstrad for once looks solid gold!
Well, shame on the programmers rather than the machines themselves. Fast-updating racing games that gave a good impression of speed were available on both machines. I remember Speed King on the C64, for example. The Amiga programmers presumably just ported the ST version, which itself should have been better. At least it wasn't as bad as the Outrun tragedy.
@Roborav Everything in that Turbografx version is crap. There is General Sound version for the Speccy and in comparison that Turbografx version sounds horrible. Also if you have ZX Spectrum computer with 7 MHz turbo, it will play very fast and smooth unlike that jerky Turbografx port that will only give you epilepsy seizures while cars are stuttering and stripes are flashing all over the screen.
Let's Compare Test Drive 2: The Duel There's the Amiga, Atari ST, Apple IIGS, Macintosh, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum, SNES, DOS, and Sega Megadrive (Or Genesis) versions.
To address the elephant in the room... There's a couple of devices on the list that might stick out, as some people won't ever have heard of them. Yes they might sound fake, but trust me, i looked in to it. Both the machines did exist - and were in fact released by a real company - 'Sega'. Apparently the brand still has a small dedicated fan-base, but remains virtually forgotten today, due to the global success and widespread dominance of the 'FM Towns'*, the 'Sharp X68000'* & the 'Taco Bel Unga-Bunga 900'* [* - AKA "The big 3" ].
For me the best conversion (audio issues aside) was the Sega Saturn version, followed by the FM Towns and then the TurboGFX 16. The early 8-bit systems had awful versions. The C64 also had the worst home port of Super Hang On as well (God that was awful, save for the music) The C64 port was just lazy programming at it's worst. They used BITMAP mode which is not the best mode for racers. And the sound effects were horrible. Usually the C64 shines in the sound department, but that was just annoying. Don't even get me started on all the green Now Chase H.Q. 2 was actually a pretty good game on the C64, but this was horrendous
"The power of Swatikon propels you!" Otherwise, it looks good. Well picked color palette, good perspective, good FPS, good detail, and the soundtrack rocks! It looks like lots of fun to play, too.
Even the Amstrad-version? WTF do you mean? It was on of the best UK-made versions. When programmed well, the Amstrad CPC shines. On the other hand when a machine get a quick and dirty Spectrum-port, of course it look bad. This time it happend to the C64.
There is actually an official Master System ROM which I found on the internet, but apparently, you're using the Game Gear ROM for the Master System version.
Kind of strange that the MSX version wasn't released by Taito. The Amstrad version looks awesome for 8-bit! C64 & X68k are disappointing. And don't worry about releasing new videos; I rather wait longer for a quality vid than watch rushed out content.
Shame, not the Saturn's best outing. Taito released Ray Tracers on the PS1 a bit later, a very similar game to Chase HQ. It was far beyond the capabilities of the Saturn.
oh the Amiga port was such a let down. Those were the days though. Save up, buy a game, and love or hate it, play it for MONTHS. Not like these days where everyone takes to social media to bag the developers, even though the graphics look like real life, and they buy 20 games a month and get some free.
*Best 8 bit version:* Graphics: CPC Sound: Famicom Gameplay: Famicom *Worst 8 bit version:* Graphics: Spectrum Sound: Commodore 64 Gameplay: Commodore 64 *Best 16 bit version:* PC Engine *Worst 16 bit version:* Atari ST *Surprises:* The sound on the C64 is _excrutiating_ and the gameplay looks awful!! Sampled speech on the CPC?! Not a bad port on the Game Boy! Surprised at the Famicom port being so much better than the Master System, disappointing. I think it's for the better that the Game Gear went with sound effects (even if apart from that, it's exact the same game) No black cop in the Sega 8 bit versions? Nice to see some actual effort on the Amiga port. It looks the same as the ST port, but they actually used the sound chip. Would have thought the X68K version would have been better, also unfortunate Turbo icons on the X68K. *What could have been:* If only the Amiga version was more like the PC Engine version, or Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge. If only they added *HIT DETECTION* with the traffic on the FM Towns version. If only the X68000 was released outside of Japan.
While the spectum's version had horrible GRAPHICS (not so much the graphics themserlves, but the lack of color) it made up for with near arcade perfect gameplay, and gameplay is always the most important thing in games, especially when it comes to arcade conversions
"white British sports car". It's a criminal so it's got to be a jag. You catch criminals by destroying their car? I'm sure the sound changes when you go in a tunnel in the game boy version. LOL what happened to the X68000 version?
im looking for very similar game to it. i played it about 20 years ago on arcade machines chasing other cars, had to destroy them but it was possible to shot them cause there was 2 buttons on steerring wheel things im not sure i remember correctly: in one level had to destroy big truck, it was possible to call helicopter for help to shot chased car, last level was only about to reach finish before end of time to see special ending (rescuing fome girl i think)
Gaming History Source nope. Shooting was not so wisable. Or maybe there was no shooting.. :-D Maybe it was chase hq but some different Version. I remember smashing through some gate at the end
It seems only the Saturn version saw the original source code if you compare the road rendering, plus the only system out of all of them that is powerful enough to do a good job. The X68k should of been far better. But Consider the Arcade is 2x68000@12mhz+ Z80.... that was some serious hardware to try an port from - 4x the main CPU power of the megadrive/genisis.

oh the Amiga port was such a let down. Those were the days though. Save up, buy a game, and love or hate it, play it for MONTHS. Not like these days where everyone takes to social media to bag the developers, even though the graphics look like real life, and they buy 20 games a month and get some free.
On the ss version i would knock nancy out and leave but its by game jumping
Game Gear version !
I think you should be ramming the car with the arrow, not all the others.... Including trees and poles....
where is the sega mega drive port?
+Artëm Maksimov thats Chase HQ 2
That was the SEQUEL
part 2
35:15 CRIMINALS HEAR!
Well... duh!
*Best 8 bit version:*
Graphics: CPC
Sound: Famicom
Gameplay: Famicom
*Worst 8 bit version:*
Graphics: Spectrum
Sound: Commodore 64
Gameplay: Commodore 64
*Best 16 bit version:* PC Engine
*Worst 16 bit version:* Atari ST
*Surprises:*
The sound on the C64 is _excrutiating_ and the gameplay looks awful!!
Sampled speech on the CPC?!
Not a bad port on the Game Boy!
Surprised at the Famicom port being so much better than the Master System, disappointing. I think it's for the better that the Game Gear went with sound effects (even if apart from that, it's exact the same game)
No black cop in the Sega 8 bit versions?
Nice to see some actual effort on the Amiga port. It looks the same as the ST port, but they actually used the sound chip.
Would have thought the X68K version would have been better, also unfortunate Turbo icons on the X68K.
*What could have been:*
If only the Amiga version was more like the PC Engine version, or Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge.
If only they added *HIT DETECTION* with the traffic on the FM Towns version.
If only the X68000 was released outside of Japan.
GeoNeilUK Famicom has the best sound?
While the spectum's version had horrible GRAPHICS (not so much the graphics themserlves, but the lack of color) it made up for with near arcade perfect gameplay, and gameplay is always the most important thing in games, especially when it comes to arcade conversions
Are those swatstikas?
Huh. In the English versions of the game, the first level's car is a British sports car, but in the Japanese versions it's German. What gives?
"white British sports car". It's a criminal so it's got to be a jag. You catch criminals by destroying their car? I'm sure the sound changes when you go in a tunnel in the game boy version. LOL what happened to the X68000 version?
im looking for very similar game to it. i played it about 20 years ago on arcade machines
chasing other cars, had to destroy them but it was possible to shot them cause there was 2 buttons on steerring wheel
things im not sure i remember correctly: in one level had to destroy big truck, it was possible to call helicopter for help to shot chased car, last level was only about to reach finish before end of time to see special ending (rescuing fome girl i think)
Road Blasters ?
Gaming History Source nope. Shooting was not so wisable. Or maybe there was no shooting.. :-D
Maybe it was chase hq but some different Version.
I remember smashing through some gate at the end
Was it SCI?
It's Big Ian yes. Special Criminal investigation
It seems only the Saturn version saw the original source code if you compare the road rendering, plus the only system out of all of them that is powerful enough to do a good job. The X68k should of been far better. But Consider the Arcade is 2x68000@12mhz+ Z80.... that was some serious hardware to try an port from - 4x the main CPU power of the megadrive/genisis.
mikiex About 3X actually.
The Saturn And the PC engine looked best for me. Never even heard of fm town LOL but that looked good too though
Noted.
Wow they really didnt make full use of what the amiga could do
where is SNES
I need to know it's Super Chase H.Q.
Dead.
That was a SEQUEL
SEQUELS do not count when comparing the ORIGINAL game...smh
wow Saturn version is Boss! shocked by C64 version looks unplayable
Anyway Super H.Q. is the best game of all in the series
