Bionic Commando, released in Japan as Top Secret (Japanese: トップシークレット, Hepburn: Toppu Shīkuretto?), is a 1987 action platform game released by Capcom for the arcades. It was later released for several home computers (ported by Software Creations and published by Go!). Capcom later produced a home version for the Nintendo Entertainment System, also titled Bionic Commando, that was drastically different from the original arcade game.
The game was advertised in the United States as a sequel to Commando, going as far to refer to the game's main character as Super Joe (the protagonist of Commando) in the promotional brochure, who was originally an unnamed member of a "special commando unit" in the Japanese and World versions.
The protagonist of the game is a commando equipped with a bionic arm featuring a grappling gun, allowing him to pull himself forward or swing from the ceiling. The series is notable for being one of few instances of a platform game in which the player cannot jump. To cross gaps or climb ledges, the hero must use his bionic arm. This was the first game to feature a grappling gun/hook, which later appeared in games such as Earthworm Jim and Tomb Raider.
Gameplay
The levels themselves are, like any conventional platformer, straightforward and semi-linear, with many situations in which there are enemies and other dangers lurking, while at the same time, cliffs that must be passed through. However, unlike most platformers, the player is unable to jump, instead navigating the level via the use of a mechanical arm that can pull him up ledges. The arm may also be used to collect pickups.
Prizes like points and power-ups can only be obtained from crates that come on the screen in a parachute, which can be revealed by shooting them. Unlike most of the later games, the player cannot use the arm and shoot at the same time, the arm cannot be used in the air and the only power-ups are weapon enhancements. Игры
The music on the Spectrum version is outstanding, one of my favourite chiptune tracks from the era :D
The C64 (european version) rules simply because the music is even better than the original arcade version.
That's tim follin for ya
I had no idea this came out on anything except the NES.
Well, the NES version only came out on the NES
@@RaposaCadela and GBA
Always felt like the arcade was a decent actioner, but the NES version turned it into something special.
Really, a LOT of early arcade games by both Capcom and Konami were fucking crude, but once they got the NES treatment, they became LEGENDS. Case in point: Bionic Commando, Ghosts-N-Goblins, CONTRA (both 1 and 2), Legendary Wings...the only exception i can think of is Strider. I dislike the NES version compared to the arcade version (which i was first exposed to on the Sega Genesis as a little kid)
Game Boy version (old game boy, not the color) is the best version imho. Cool music, hardest levels and good story!
The first game I ever finished (NES).
Don't know why but my favourite version of the game is the gameboy one.
I know it's nothing like the original, but it's a fantastic game with awesome music.
wow that dos version is horrific
IT IS. I had played it before watching this, and... oh god. Try to guess the controls!
My absolute favorite is still probably the version for the original Game Boy - mostly because I like the character designs a lot better in it than in any of the other ones. :)
Plus the music was pretty rad, too! :D
gameboy version looks really nice!
Am I the only one that finds ZX Spectrum graphics adorable?
Hmmm... yes.
i loved the speccy! it was faster than the c64 version, but the speccy always had that issue with dodgy colour clashing graphics. if, like me when really young, you had a black & white portable, it didn't matter that much ;)
Reminds me of a glitchy NES game that needs to be reinserted into the system.
I can see where you're coming from, but.. ehh...
also the music
Game Boy Colour has some nice animation!
if Amiga Bionic Commando was a port of the Atari ST version
would that have caused the Amiga version to be unplayable ?
Thank you man ! :) I'll make a note of it & look into it asap. :D
I adore this game... thanks for comparison!!!
Bionic Commando-Mega Man living in a Rygar world...
The MS-DOS version of Bionic Commando looks like a Newgrounds creation.
This is pretty fun to watch.
I have more ! :D lol I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I hope the guy who did the CPC version got fired after that port.
i like the art design & grapple mechanics of the Gameboy version best- though i never played the pre-NES ones.
i remember how frustating that the chara cannot jump x)
Thanks for compiling, as usual, awesome work!
The common denominator in most of these conversions is the excellent Tim Follin soundtrack!
quality vid man,you should totaly do buggy boy there are only about 6 versions of it,would be a nice little video for ya.
dat song at the beginning is insanely awesome
The sound in the ZX Spectrum port seems to be fixed - it was out-of-tune in the other version, which some of us noted.
There may be other things but I'll let GHS post those. :P
Double extra brownie points for him making it sound even better on Speccy 128K ;P
listen the sid filters ahhhrggh eargasmic
Arcade 8
ZX Spectrum 7/8
Amstrad 6
DOS 4/5
Commodore 64 3
Commodore 64 ( European version ) 7+
Atari ST 5
Amiga 5/6
Gameboy 7
NES 8
Amiga's sound is awesome
if the Amiga version is a lazy remake of the Atari ST version it not awesome
gbc has slick animations for what it was
The ZX Spectrum version was jacked up. The sound was bad. I recently formatted & reinstalled My video drivers but forgot to change a setting on the driver that effected the emulation of the ZX Spectrum.
Looooved BC on Nintendo!
The music on the Amiga version was pretty good
if you knew the Amiga version is (was) a lazy remake of the inferior Atari ST version would your opinion be any different?
I think that if they did it right, the hook, then they shouldn't have the unrealistic high jumping of most games, but a wee lunge like in Uncharted games. That way more is emphasizing on the hook than the jump.
Why do the shots in the arcade sound like farts, and why is the Amstrad version worse than on the speccy?
because the Amstrad version is probably a lazy remake of the ZX Spectrum version
As a Commodore fan, owner and (a-hem) hack/developer) along with having owned this title on the NES and C64, I vote for both the NES and original GameBoy versions, in that order. I simply thought that they were superior games in many respects. It seems as though Capcom went the extra mile to create true gaming experiences with those two. The other platforms were simply inferior ports of the arcade version-which I still held in lower regard to the NES and GB versions. The sound design, gameplay and deeper storyline stole the show for me.
haven't even gotten started yet. I have a list of 48 game video's I haven't even done yet. lol It could be a while. 0_0

『トップ・シークレット ヒットラーの復活』
The ZX Spectrum and Amstrad ports looks almost exactly alike.
i couldn't believe 16-bit era Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive and Neo Geo also had an 8-bit Zilog Z80 CPU
My rank from best to worst (only ports of the arcade game are included.)
1) Arcade
2) Amiga (by far closest to the arcade version)
3) Atari ST (graphics are nearly identical to Amiga, but everything else is worse)
4) C64 (no sound effects, but good music and passable graphics)
5) Spectrum (surprisingly good music, bad graphics, faster than the other 8-bits)
6) C64 (American version) (better graphics than Spectrum or the other C64 version, but too slow and missing too many elements of the game)
7) Amstrad (could have been *way* better had they not made it a Spectrum port)
8) DOS (no scrolling, bad music and sound effects, bad graphics)
Ever play the NES game?
Amiga Bionic Commando is (was) probably just a lazy remake of the Atari ST version
C64 (American) version looks and/sounds worse than the C64 (European/UK) version
The MSDOS version was so painful to listen to... lol
Original 92' Gameboy version was easily the best.
I bought elite forces on my 3ds with virtual console, and honestly it's a better game than the arcade ever was.. it's a great title and I recommend it to anyone with a 3DS as the gameboy colour's screen translates well. Amiga version had ruined scrolling (of course).. Nes was also a good game that like many other arcade titles was adapted specifically for NES as a different game. The best Bionic commando game of all time is of course Bionic Commando rearmed.
possibly because of deadlines Amiga game versions were lazy Atari ST remakes
in ready 2 rumble boxing round 2 can i see selene srtike vs afro thunder
The AMIGA version was great but after you played it for an hour or so the game wouldn't let you go to the next screen. Programming glitch i guess. I always hated that because it was such a fun game.
Why do the graphics look better on the gameboy version and not the nes version.
Specteum version has the best soundtrack
Bionic Commando on the ZX Spectrum looks
slightly better than the Amstrad CPC version
both look dreadful (terrible) by 8-bit standards
lazy developers
it might've been incompetence or rushing it out
Bionic Commando on the Amstrad and ZX Spectrum
looked and/or sounded like the worst 8-bit conversion
arcade > amiga > atariST > MSdos> remainder
It's sad that they screwed up the 3d game. If only they replicated the mechanics of Just Cause 2's grappling hook...
Errgh. Comparing completely different games between each other?
why gameboy advance here? it's the same as the nes.
Nathan Spencer has come a long way
when you see that the amstrad port has colorclash issues you known that inside it's emulating a crappy spectrum. with a proper coding and 16 colors this type of games would be always better on amstrad than any other 8bit home computer.
out of commandos the nes was by far the bes rearmed was great make of the nes but did not like how they changed area 5 enemy from nes it was solders in blue with the ray guns didnt like the new machine idea as the enemy in rearmed but played it on computer and the game was still alsome plus the rolling barrels dint kill u in one it in rearmed only the red in nes u hit it u die took some of the change off but did beat on all mode changes on rearmed
Ms dos music hahahhahahahahahaahahhahaahhahahahahahahahaahahahahahhahahaah
Amstrad CPC: what a disaster of version!!
Amstrad version was a lazy remake
of ZX Spectrum version or other way
I‘m really surprised by the good spectrum music...
The Nes version still the King of all Bionic Commandos !!!!! ........ indeed, the Famicom Version: Hitler No Fukkatsu: Top Secret, got the real original story. But the American version still a great choice.
Screw the Advance version. Sucked port !!!!!
P.S.
The B/W Gameboy Version still one of the best Bionic Commando games, after the Nes version.
As far as I know the Famicom version was also slightly different in terms of difficulty, but I haven't noticed anything different. I played the patched, translated version with corrected dialogue and the most important - Hitler and neo-Nazis!
Indeed for the Nazis symbols and for the another kind of story wise. The Famicom version got it's own. And the American version is a little more "edited or shortened" experience. You can play the European (pal) version. it still censored, the same as the american. But it got the same Famicom Stuff kind of gameplay and contents.
I sincerely hope the person responsible for the crappy US C64 port, lost their job! I had a pirated copy of the UK version that never worked right (PAL) and was excited when the US version was announced. Then I discovered that it was crap!
The Amiga version looks and sounds good, but it's practically unplayable due to the difficulty. You never get a second's peace. It's just a constant rain of enemies!
or the Amiga version is unplayable because it was a lazy Atari ST remake
The Atari st version is amazing. The Amiga version is not as appealing. The ms dos version is drunk. The c64 us version is ridiculous. The c64 uk version is amazing. The spectrum version is amazing. Amstrad cpc got shafted. The gbc gba gb nes versions are amazing
The game boy version is better
the Nintendo wins again
CPC as usual replicated ZX shitty graphics, only 3x slower.
Bionic Commando is a crap game on all systems but the Nintendo versions are by FAR the crappest of the lot. All that dialogue and stuff. Totally screwed up. I'd say the Amiga version is closest to the arcade.
