Thanks Guys ! I'm glad You enjoyed it. A special note to the usual suspects. ..I tangled with DOS Box for 3 hours trying to change the sound settings.. No go.. So please spare me the usual complaints about the speaker settings in Dos Box ... please ?
I was doing something else on the computer , but listening to the video just to see if I can recognize the game from many years ago ... nice video thank you :)
i just bought a copy today, addictively hard i think sums it up. and a amazing little game that you wouldnt think the little 1977 atari couldnt pull off, but it does and keeps the spirit and the fun of the game
I have the 2600 and 7800 version. 2600 version is awesome in gameplay and graphics, just as much fun as the 7800, but 7800 has better sound in their version
I was wondering why I couldn't see your bullets on the 2600 port. Just like Double Dragon for the 2600, it's amazing they were able to do what they did. Great video!
I had forgotten how cool the music was. I remember playing the Spectrum ver, but it played slower than this. Weird. Though I had an ST at the time, my fav ver was the Amstrad CPC version. Just felt better, you know?
The Let`s Compare Videos are a great present to all Lovers of good old Arcade and Home Computer games. Thank you very much!!!!! Why is the scrolling in the RUclips-Video not so good as it is in reality? Do I have to change something?
Nice job as always. I think most of us are more familiar with the NES version. My brother and I spammed the hell out of the tank trick (both entering the same tank at the exact same time would give you each a new tank). And of course the good olf ABBA trick. Dancing Queen!! :P
The best version is the original arcade title, but the NES port is pretty good too. Probably the best thing is the co-op game play. There is also a memorable stage where all the enemies look like Player 1 and 2.
it was pretty good considering the limitations of the Atari 2600. However I had a frame rate synchronization problem with the emulation & camtasia. That's why You couldn't see the bullet rounds from the player. I even shot this clip about 10 times trying to sync it up but for some reason it didn't want to.
Ah, the arcade Ikari Warriors was a beautiful piece of addictive action porn. The controls were such a joy. And also the biggest problem, the unique control scheme meant that there would never be a "true" home version (never mind the systems not having the horsepower to match the arcade.)
+Dave Bautistaroid actually, you could've accomplished this on a stock Atari 5200 which had paddles integrated into the stick, or they could have implemented that controller on the 2600/7800.
The clip you posted of the arcade version is not the real arcade version, it is a hack of the arcade version which makes the game play like Capcom's Commando, or like all of the home console ports of Ikari Warriors. Unlike in your video where the character's gun always points in the direction he is walking, the real arcade version has a rotary joystick which allows you to aim your gun independently of the direction in which you are walking (so you can, for example, walk forward while shooting enemies behind you). This is the biggest thing which makes the real arcade version vastly superior to any of the console or home computer ports.
+MaximRecoil I know I'm necroposting, but to be fair, the console ports vary in the way they handle player fire. and while the "bootleg" arcade version definitely does not do the intended rotary sticks, it was mainly done so that people could install ikari warriors in their cabs that didn't have them, which probably helped the game gain traction in areas where people couldn't buy a new or "authentic" one. so even though I agree with you that the rotary stick version is far superior, this video still does a pretty good job of comparing the graphics, sound, and (for the most part) gameplay of each port against the arcade.
I forgot to consider the NTSC compatability,. It might just be that, but shouldn't emulation recognise it and adjust accordingly anyway? I don't know. Damn shame though as it's a great little conversion that doesn't deserve a bad youtube play, especially against the other versions. Far more playable than the PC and Atari 2600 version for sure. Best of it's genre on the C16 imo. I'm now more determined to clock this game and upload it so people can see how it really looks, eventually :)
The Link is now active at the end of the video. It will take You to the artists page. You'll know the video. It's Ikari warriors something or another >_
That's your best bet. Take your time and make a nice long play of the C16/Plus4 version for all to see so they can also see how it was meant to be seen in action! ;-)
Elites c64 version is really nice and has great music, shame the amiga got the st port which was so common during this time, no scrolling on the plane intro etc...
what is the deal with the flase c64 version near the beginning before it shows the real c64 version??? what platform was it actually from; bbc micro, acorn electric???
+terraspent It is the c64. The c16 version comes after it. There's two versions, like with Double Dragon and Street Fighter. The first version is your 'vanilla' C64 no effort version, the second they sat down and did it properly to make best use of the hardware.
The Commodore C16/Plus4 recording we see in this video does not represent the genuine real version being run on a PAL 50hz machine from Europe or how it would look on the best emulators of these machines. The ugly & glitchy scrolling is not present which maybe fault of the NTSC recording device or bad emulation as also the sound is bugged. A real shame. Maybe not the best version of the game but one that is only 12k and none the less playable in it's own right which has it's fans respectfully.
never knew there was a msx version, looks fantastic as well, thats a definite with the msx version of rastan to track down. but i think i'll give the msx version of green beret a miss though........lol
At 10:12 I count eleven enemies on screen, with two tanks just about to come on. How many enemies do you want? (It even throws nine enemies at you at the very beginning.)
I don't know what emulator he was using (works fine on YAPE and the real machine) but The C16 version scrolls smoothly and shouldn't jerk like that, unless he's playing a bugged version :(
C64 Elite: The best 8 bit version! My question is about the second place..the ugly and incredibly fluid and playable version of the speccy or the beautiful colorful and slow like hell Amstrad version??
Have to admire the Atari 2600 for even attempting to do a recognizable video game soundtrack theme. What always bothered me about these games is that the controls never seemed to translate well, not even on MAME.
You've got to give the NES some credit here. Compared to other 8-bit machines like the C64 it really cranks out some great sound and graphics. All for a box that could be had for under $150 in 1988. Plus it wason cartridge which eliminated incessant disk loading...I'm looking at you Amiga 500 and Atari 520ST
i'll take that challenge, arkanoid was an awsome game. im not trying to steel your requests (GamingHistorySource) but i do fancy doing a video of this if you don't mind that is?.
The C64-version has a problem usual for its hardware. It displays only a few sprites onscreen at once. Its fast but feels wrong when you have so few enemies
I only played this on NES, so it's interesting to see what it looked like on other platforms. Funny how Ikari Warriors seems inferior to Commando on both Atari 2600 and 7800.
The comparison seems kinda flawed, when the arcade version is so brutally filtered and fails to demonstrate that you could aim separately from direction you're moving in.
terraspent The Amiga version was one of the first games I had on the Amiga 500 as a kid... It didn't have too many glitched from what I remember,.. this video's flickering that you see during the tank part doesn't actually happen when you play the real Amiga version, maybe that was the emulator or something else but it's not how the Amiga version actually worked back in the day :) but the Atari ST was also an awesome machine, and so was the C64!! :)
C16 version was more fluent than this jaggy record, probably made on VICE. Try Plus4Emu, then it will be OK. Although I should agree that is it far less quick action as the original arcade version, even does not look the same. Interesting to see, how much faster the AMiga version is compared to Atari ST, as they both built on the Motorola 68000 7.16MHz CPU. The noticeable Amiga GFX defects also come from emulator issues, as the original game -as far as I remember- did not have those issues.
Woow great job! the amiga is the best 16b conversion without a doubt, Atari is too slow; the MSX sorprises me, is fast and playable, I played the two C64 versions when kid, the Data East was really crapy, and I played the Spec48 that amused me a lot :) ...coooool memories...
De los ordenadores de 8 bits para mi la mejor versión es la de Amstrad CPC. Gráficos y sonidos perfectos y jugabilidad un 10 incluso en el modo de dos jugadores.
"Rambo Commando, Rambo Commando, where did the hair go?"
Still wondering in 2020. I've been behind a couch for all these god damn years.
the Amstrad CPC version looks and plays extremly sell. It was released 18 months before the C64 and Spectrum versions
This and Athena were SNK's best-known games before the Neo-Geo era.
As usual, great comparison video.
I played the Amstrad CPC version, and i'm glad to see that was the best of the 8 bit versions.
Thanks Guys ! I'm glad You enjoyed it. A special note to the usual suspects. ..I tangled with DOS Box for 3 hours trying to change the sound settings.. No go.. So please spare me the usual complaints about the speaker settings in Dos Box ... please ?
Great comparison! I'm impressed by the C64 and MSX2 versions :) I played until the end the C64 version, had a goooood playability
I was doing something else on the computer , but listening to the video just to see if I can recognize the game from many years ago ... nice video thank you :)
The bodies don´t disapear on MSX2 version, and the game has more solid gameplay.
Best gameplay for me CPC.
I had it on the Amstrad. Brilliant game
the Elite version, obviously ;)
p.s. The C64 Elite version is made by John Twiddy, author of The Last Ninja :)
*"Where did the hair go?!"*
The version I played the most was the Atari ST version. But of course the best version after the arcade was the Amiga version.
Apart from the grenade sound! What on earth were they thinking?!?!?!
The red grenades are still the most satisfying power-up I think I've ever seen in a game.
I used to play this game all the time back in the days when I get to work at the movie theaters theaters, nothing like the old school
The CPC version was done extremely well
C64 elite version was great and probably and the best music.
Those enemies guys on the Atari 7800 give the phrase "Grenade spamming" a whole new meaning :-P lol
This, Athena, Psycho Soldier, ASO / Alpha Mission, Touch Down Fever and Vanguard were six of SNK's earliest hits.
i just bought a copy today, addictively hard i think sums it up.
and a amazing little game that you wouldnt think the little 1977 atari couldnt pull off, but it does and keeps the spirit and the fun of the game
The MSX was the only one that allowed directional fire by the look of it?
I had forgotten how cool the music was.
I remember playing the Spectrum ver, but it played slower than this. Weird.
Though I had an ST at the time, my fav ver was the Amstrad CPC version. Just felt better, you know?
Thanks a lot for posting this. I played Ikari Warriors a lot on my MSX2.
I'm still wondering "Where did their hair go?"
The Let`s Compare Videos are a great present to all Lovers of good old Arcade and Home Computer games. Thank you very much!!!!!
Why is the scrolling in the RUclips-Video not so good as it is in reality?
Do I have to change something?
I'm glad that You enjoy them. It's always good to hear that My video's triggered good memories. :D
the msx port is actually the msx 2 version,i've done a bit of research cos im doing this game next and there doesn't seem to b a standard msx port.
Nice job as always.
I think most of us are more familiar with the NES version. My brother and I spammed the hell out of the tank trick (both entering the same tank at the exact same time would give you each a new tank). And of course the good olf ABBA trick. Dancing Queen!! :P
ikari warriors, remember was as a child, in the arcade version, I completed this game with only 1 credit and without losing any extra life
I am glad ikara was release for the atari 2600. It prove that 2600 could play with the big boys.
The amiga version looks really good, almost arcade level. Also the C64 elite version has really awesome music
The music in the second Commodore 64 version sounds like something out of a Bally/Sente arcade game.
This game looks so much more awesome at the arcade as my memory recalls. The home console version looks stripped.
The european Elite version of Ikari for the Commodore 64 is a classic. MSX version looks nice as well.
Ah, the arcade Ikari Warriors was a beautiful piece of addictive action porn. The controls were such a joy. And also the biggest problem, the unique control scheme meant that there would never be a "true" home version (never mind the systems not having the horsepower to match the arcade.)

inversephase Good point.
The meowing sounds ruin the Amiga version
ZX-Spectrum wins. Go play, not whatch all veraions and after that judge it yourself!
i loved it i think 1989 0r 90 one of those years at a circle k
Sweet! I requested this one and it was worth the wait. Thank you!
I had the MSX version, so cool!!!!
\m/

How about one of you do Arkanoid? Was one of my favourites on the Speccy and its not been done with various versions yet..

Glad You approved ! I had to reshoot all the screens to the new format. Otherwise You would have gotten it about 3 months ago. lol
I could see a crossover between Ikari Warriors and Wolfenstein being pretty interesting...
Elites c64 version is really nice and has great music, shame the amiga got the st port which was so common during this time, no scrolling on the plane intro etc...
Fantastic vid yet again
The scroll shuddering is a long standing issue with VICE that presents itself on other split screen vertical scrollers as well.
Excellent job...thanks again!
Ugh! Givin' me Flashbacks of when Ports of Games tonged the balz!
Besides the arcade, the nintendo version was the way to go. Many hours spent on that one during my childhood.
My favorites are the galaga like enemy movement patterns on the NES and the meowing grenades on the Amiga.
what is the deal with the flase c64 version near the beginning before it shows the real c64 version??? what platform was it actually from; bbc micro, acorn electric???
+terraspent That was actually a Commodore 16 (the crummy sequel to the Vic 20). It's pretty rare, so not many people have heard of it.
if only they would of given
the c16 a sid chip and decent sprite engine!
+terraspent It is the c64. The c16 version comes after it. There's two versions, like with Double Dragon and Street Fighter. The first version is your 'vanilla' C64 no effort version, the second they sat down and did it properly to make best use of the hardware.
Best Sound Music and Graphics after the Arcade version: Amiga is the winer!
Ikari warriors was my favourite arcade game. XBLA or even iphone??? Please........

look at that amstrad cheat ! A whole army ! lol :-)
At 10:12 I count eleven enemies on screen, with two tanks just about to come on.

nice Amiga version too

Amstrad CPC supremacy. =)
Is the msx version msx 2? The graphics are so fine
Elite's version on the 64 trounces all over Data Easts shocking effort!!
Commodore 16 looks really good for what is mostly poor hardware limitations.
There is a link at the end of the video.. But I don't know if I hot linked it. I'll remody that on My next upload soon. :)
You've got to give the NES some credit here. Compared to other 8-bit machines like the C64 it really cranks out some great sound and graphics. All for a box that could be had for under $150 in 1988. The NES version was also way longer than the arcade. I think it basically went on almost forever.
Great job
thanks ! :)
Best version overall:Arcade.Best 8 bit version: Atari 7800.Best 16 bit version: Amiga.
MSX version destroys the competition
No way!! The arcade is the best version by far.
Woah. The Data East C64 version looks more like Commando than Ikari Warriors.
i'll take that challenge, arkanoid was an awsome game.
im not trying to steel your requests (GamingHistorySource) but i do fancy doing a video of this if you don't mind that is?.

Why did you show the US version of Ikari Warriors for the C64 when the EU version was far superior?
The comparison seems kinda flawed, when the arcade version is so brutally filtered and fails to demonstrate that you could aim separately from direction you're moving in.
The 2600 one actually plays okay, but the audio is terrible and a lot of stuff is cut out.
No contest here the Amiga version is the clear winner.
+Ronnie Bradley too many glitchs, the atari st version is technically better however i am not biased over the st as i prefer the c64 :P
terraspent The Amiga version was one of the first games I had on the Amiga 500 as a kid... Amiga and Atari ST are certainly close. I forgot how abysmal the others were. I miss my Ikari Warriors arcade machine.

the walking animation on 3:30 made me shit on my chair

I'm American & I respect it.. in fact ! .. I fear it 0_0
Atari 2600 rules! LOL
Thankyou ! :)
The Commodore 16 version actually looks quite decent.
MSX version wins because of the corpses!
De los ordenadores de 8 bits para mi la mejor versión es la de Amstrad CPC. Gráficos y sonidos perfectos y jugabilidad un 10 incluso en el modo de dos jugadores.
Amiga version is impressive!
NOOOO !!! that's the sound of diarrhea on an internal PC Speaker :D lol
Why u no include NES?
ABBA
Its on PSN as PSMini's.No sign of XBLA yet.
