  • Power Drift from SEGA is this weeks featured VS game, released by Sega in the arcade in 1988 and then released onto the home systems by Activision in 1989. This was a great arcade racing game that pushed the arcade hardware which is evident on the Sega Y Board.
And a first for the channel ! I not only look at the 8 Bit systems of the day but also compare the 16 Bit computer conversions too.
So lets take a look firstly at Power Drift by Sega on the Arcade followed by the 8 Bit systems featuring:
    Commodore 64
    Sinclair ZX Spectrum
    Amstrad CPC
And then the 16 Bit systems featuring:
    Commodore Amiga
    Atari ST

How on earth did the C64 do those giant sprites?
There must have been some hardware trickery going on. There’s no way that could have been done in software, is there?

Great Vid mate. Must admit. Shocked that the C64 didn't get 1st place. Plays the fastest out of the 8 bits, Cracking in game music and far superior road effects and a game that actually plays better than the arcade version, but each to their own. This is what the comments section is for.

For once on a car game, the C64 version is better than the Speccy and CPC! Quite nice conversions on the ZX and Amstrad, pretty much what you'd expect. Nice in game music. But the C64 version is an astonishing bit of programming! Truly great version. The engine was used later in Turbo Charge, which i think it quite underrated.
Love this type of video, cheers!

@Rooflesoft Games Actually there are almost 50/60 moving object on screen or more at every moment - the Power Drift Amiga and Atari version are made in the same way as the arcade - every road segment is a bob!
It look a bit better on NTSC since was coded with 60FPS in mind and become decent on a 1200

You can blame Activision hierarchy for the issues with yje ST and Amiga versions issues, he warned them putting too many cars on screen at once, would only cause slow down and confusion, they told him they didn't care, just put as many on-screen as possible, since they paid the bills, he did as he was told.
Poor old John Mullins, who handled the Z80 8-bit versions had no assistance from Sega and only used the coin-op as a reference.
Chris Butler did a sterling job on the C64 version.

I played Power Drift on both the Spectrum and C64; the former is a pretty good conversion with a reasonably fast graphic engine, but I liked the latter best - nice and colorful graphics, a tad faster and with in-game music (I confirm there is no music during gameplay on the 128K Spectrum, it can be heard in the start menu only).
Never tried the Amstrad version - that system was not exactly popular here - but from what I can see, it seems a bit slower than the Spectrum one.
    Thanks for the video!

The Speccy version (128) definitely has in game music- the same tune as the opening screen. I think it alternates between engine 'sound', uh.. beep or music in game.
The CPC was inspired by the Spectrum and has the same CPU, so often shares code, which can be good or bad as all those colours shifting around can make it quite a bit slower than the Speccy. As it was less popular, it would sometimes get a quick weekend port of Speccy resolution but only 4 colours on screen and slowwww. It's actually a great machine - sort of half a generation ahead, but needed dedicated developers.

NO WAY the Amstrad version was better than the C64 - c64 had a quick feel to it, great music and playability. Perhaps Amatrad beats c64 at double dragon but not this gem of a conversion - its easier for a English bowler to get a LBW decision in India then it is for a C64 game to get the 1st prize on your good, entertaining and very well produced channel.

Ooh.....I have to disagree here OG. My experience was a different one. I used to love the arcade games and appreciated how much more powerful they were than home computers. A situation that stayed the same until 32-bit machines with dedicated graphics hardware hit the home market 20ish years ago. The 16-bit consoles were almost there with some titles.... But generally speaking, lacked the oomph necessary for running arcade level games. This of course was particularly true for 8-bit systems.
I remember many times playing arcade conversions at home and being sorely disappointed with what I was looking at/playing. 🙄
However, graphics aside, the most important thing in any 3d game to make it at all playable and fun to play is its frame rate followed by its controllability.
    In this comparison, the C64 version far outpaces the other systems in FPS. Even the Amiga and ST versions. And it looks pretty controllable. I'd go as far as to say it looks the most fun to play on out of ALL the machines tested here as well as having music. 🎶 The Amstrad version looked bright but far too choppy and low a frame rate to give any feel of speed/flow. The Spectrum looks slightly better in this department but still not good enough for a 'speed feel'. I would have placed like the systems differently;
    1. Commodore 64
    2. ZX Spectrum
    3. Amstrad CPC 464
But hey,, that's just my opinion. 🤗
I loved Power Drift in the arcade. Was insanely fast! And when combined with that hydraulic cabinet that turned as you turned , it was a real treat to play. I spent many pennies doing so. 🙂🏎️💨

At home it was always Commodore rulezzzz, but now with the time it is forced to note that the others also made beautiful things, damn it, I love this Amstrad version !!!!

    Another great vid mate :)
I got to play the hydraulic cabinet at NERG a few years ago and it was awesome!
The Amiga & Atari ST versions are ok but when playing it feels like the animation is missing frames and stuttering. I don't like that it is set as mouse for control either but thankfully you can change that to joystick making things easier.
As for the 8 Bits I have to disagree with you on Amstrad. Playing it this morning on my CPC the controls feel a big sluggish and it doesn't feel like it is moving particularly fast. The C64 for me is the goto 8 Bit version (still have my day 1 copy on tape bought from Chips in Stockton). It is quite the marvel on C64 as both the Spectrum & Amstrad versions are multiloads for the different courses but the C64 every single bit of the game has been crammed into a single load - only thing missing are the 2 bonus stages with the After Burner plane and the Hang On bike.
A few more to stick on your list for later dates : Bruce Lee (don't forget the BBC Micro version), Shinobi, Forgotten Worlds, Druid 1&2, Target Renegade, APB, Narc, Ninja Spirit, Ninja Warriors, Double Dragon 2 (avoid the first one as it is terrible on all 8 Bit computers), Turrican 1&2 & Bionic Commando (there is a US version of this one as well as the Go Euro version we have here)

Terrible frame rate on 16-bit systems, sad to say. Wouldn't have enjoyed those at all (I think I saw the Amiga version at a friend's home, back in the day, but I don't remember actually playing it). Plus, the cars are too big in relation to the track, so overtaking is more difficult than it should be.
The C64 version is the best, in my opinion. It's the only one that really gives a good feeling of speed. I'd put the Spectrum version in second place, it's still quite smooth. Amstrad in third -- it's the Speccy version with more color, but it's noticeably slower, as is usually the case.

    • @OGDuffy
