Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super Review: More Power, More Performance

- Nvidia introduces a new, more powerful GTX 1660... except that there's already one out there and it's called GTX 1660 Ti. So just how similar - or different - are the three GTX 1660s we have now on the market? Things are getting a touch confusing...

Just felt like saying thanks to the entire DF team. I've been watching your videos on an off for years although only some months ago did I subscribe. You guys are great and every bit of content is smart, unbiased (even the odd sponsored content!), to the point I whish other journalists, in other admitedly more socially relevant topics, would be as thorough and captivating. You kinda put mainstream media to shame, even talking about computer graphics!
I think you need to watch some KingTrash gaming for a reality check.
With each new GPU Nvidia makes two GPUs worthless. Literally no reason to buy a 1660 or 1660 ti now and those things are only a few months old.
The entire Nvidia lineup is a cash grab nowadays, cash grab rtx at launch, then cash grab rts super, then the 1660 now the 16060 super lmao
Is that not a good thing? I'd much rather have a 1660 Super and save money/get better performance rather than getting no GPU at all
@@gbc9053 Yes it is a good thing if you don't already own a 1660 or 1660ti or if they were already 1-2 years old, but they basicly just came out. For all we know in 4-5 months they will release the Super Ti with the performance of a 2060 and price of a 1660.
@@gbc9053 It is an upgrade for me with a RX 480 8 GB, just not a good upgrade. That's why I'll get the RX 5700XT.

Wow remember that Titan X which costs. 1000$ at the start of this generation being outperformed by a 250$ GPU?
True, but as a titan x owner, i've had 1070 level performance for almost 5 years now so i really cant complain. Also remember he is talking about titan x Maxwell witch launched in march of 2015. Gonna start paying for my own power soon, that's when i'm gonna upgrade.

GTX 1666 Ti Super XXX O.C by Asus or no buy for me! 😈
It'd be great if companies would move away from these vague naming standards. I should be able to tell what's the better initial part from just glancing at the name. TI? SUPER? Why are these in the names?! I'd have to go on a long googling spree just to figure out wtf those meant if I didn't know any better.
I've spent the last month doing research before building a new computer, and I still have no idea what "TI" means. "Tiny Improvement" maybe?
@@berserkasaurusrex4233 supposedly means Titanium
They couldn't really give it a fully logical name. If using say GTX 1665 it would indicate a faster card than 1660 Ti. Which it is not. So it's up to some kind of suffix then. And they choose Super. Does it make sense? Well, as much sense as any other name. I guess they could have used 1660+, but what about + vs Ti? Still as confusing.
Yeah, even down to the numbers and such. So this is a 1660 but a 1070 is better? How are those numbers/names put together? What's happening? Help!
They need to just reboot things, have some snappy name scheme that indicates the price/performance range and then just move, more or less, in generations, counting up. Like, a high budget card could be an Nvidia Super, then the next, better card released in that price/performance range would be the Super 2, then years later a Super 3, etc
And maybe their absolutely no limits enthusiasts cards could be Nvidia Ultra or something. I don't know.
Or go with Bronze, Gold, Silver, Diamond or something like that.
But just having seemingly arbitrary numbers that have no indication on how good they are and then adding suffixes at the end of that just feels incredibly confusing. PCs aren't this impenetrable fortress anymore that they once were. Software has become more user-friendly, putting a PC together has become more straight-forward, you don't have to be a computer science student or massive nerd anymore to buy and use a PC anymore, even standards for how devices are hooked up have become more streamlined and universal with fewer standards and they're even more and more moving on to putting everything on USB, so why are the actual names of PC parts not reflecting that change at all? CPUs honestly have a very similar issue.
Because it Just works
They made a super version of this? Very odd
Everybody has a budget, if Nvidia has the means to create cards for every budget, so be it, right?
They gonna made GTX 1650 super too
@@_Thri It's weird since there's only like $20 between most of these cards, they don't all fill different budgets it just makes the 1660 kind of pointless.

The GTX 1660 has about the same graphical power as the original Titan X from 2015.
Mindblowing.
Although not so much given that the cheapest and most basic card you can buy today, the GT 1030, which costs $60 and can be found in discount bins for $40 or even less, has about the same graphical power as the GTX 560 Ti from 2011.
so its basically a 1070 for 230 bucks, still kinda expensive and has less vram
I was really hoping we'd reach $199 1070 performance by now. Ehhh, I'm sure most of these cards will be closer to the $250 mark.

The 1660 Super is a great 1080P card but in 2023 it is still way over priced brand new from a retail store.
Sometimes we forget how good the Vega cards were. I see this as nVidia flooding the market a bit, but the price is good.
Interesting results, It seems the Vega 56 is the better choice when EOL price cuts are taken into account, that said I'm unconvinced GCN support will last as well as we'd hope now RDNA's finally replacing it. It'll be interesting to see how the GCN cards compare against the RDNA models in upcoming games a couple of years from now. Nvidia often gets stick over how their cards age so now we'll get to see if Radeon fair any better.
I'm waiting for the Mega lineup
Good value -still in times when i can grab a 1070 with 8G for 220$ used..Not so much...
If you pay for your power, the efficiency difference will end up evening the price after around a year. You are also getting a new card with full warranty vs a used one, not to mention newer games tend to favor the newer tech. The 1070 uses around 30% more power for the same performance which accounts to a difference of about $30 after a year of moderate gaming at the price of electricity where i am. Makes me think upgrading my titan x maxwell is going to save me money lol
yeah.. i bought 1660ti for 250$ and then next month found out that people are selling 1070 for 150$ and 1080 for just 300$.
@@b-rant But you also get 2gb vram more on 1070. If you live in a country where power bill isn't that big of a deal, the 1070 is a way better buy.
@@b-rant the difference is the power bill would literally be less than $5 dollar a year... So stop spreading bullshit.
@@ArthurM1863 The 2gb of vram is negligible. In that performance class you are running out of steam on the gpu well before you saturate even 6gb of memory (see hardware unboxed and gamers nexus for videos discussing this). Only a few games are using 6gb of vram at 4k max settings, and with a card of 1070 power levels, you are dropping under 30 fps anyways in said games. At 1440p we are still another year or so away from saturating a 6gb card at max settings. Considering the 1660s has significantly faster memory, you can likely expect newer games to perform better on the 1660s' newer architecture and faster memory.
In no way other than possibly the price found used is the 1070 a better buy. (both are going for around $300 CAD right now with the 1070 being found a little lower if you look hard enough through used market)
Can't wait for the 1660 Ti Super
I don't even get the point of the 1600 series, given it doesn't go up to 1680 or w/e. Defeats the point of being "new architecture but without the raytracing".

Seems like the 1660 Super is a gpu when you need to update today bc of your PC has gotten old, damaged but you don´t have the money to go higher. Giving you time to save up for a better card in 2 years time.
I expect I will get 5 years out of my super at 1080p.

Naming aside, it's nice to have these cards, they are great and good value for the money. You're getting great performance for a good relative price. With that said, I recently bought the 1660 and it's not fair if this is the same price as the 1660. :/
Yes. This gpu is really a bang for the buck gpu. But those who bought the older cards, i am sorry. It's just how the market works. If you wait for something better everytime, you'll never be able to buy something. Because the market is moving forward rapidly. I also waited for something better when the pascal series came out. Could you guys run 'High/Very High' instead of Ultra too?
Allof these benchmarks indicate the games aren't playable with only 38fps on any 1660 or AMD RX 5** range but I'm sure they'll cope
Well I just bought one for £150 so I can sell my 1080ti before 3000 arrives. I also used to own a Titan X Maxwell back then... The fact you get the same performance for this price is insane!
A used 1070 or 1070ti with 8gb of Vram seems like a better deal if you can find one for around 200
i still think that the vega 56 and the 1070 are better deals if you get ones for 240 bucks.
The 8gb memory can already make some difference in some games and Nvidia does still not support freesync on HDMI cable and some monitors don't have DVI, people with such monitors are better with AMD.
Welp they now do through hdmi with the driver that released yesterday
The only compelling reason for myself to avoid vega 56 is power draw; Otherwise if found for the price mentioned in the video, it is a stellar deal. The 1070 should be avoided in my opinion as the price difference isnt huge, performance is similar if not worse than 1660s and it draws more power (meaning it may have run hotter over time and therefor depending on your luck in the used market, may not last as long). The memory absolutely not make a difference in this performance range when talking 6gb vs 8gb. You are actually much better off with faster 6gb ddr6 than slower 8gb ddr5 considering no game is using over 6gb at 1440p and very few are doing so at 4k (see hw unboxed and gamers nexus for reference on that statement).
@@b-rant The power draw is an actual concern? How expensive is electricity in your region? How many hours a day do you actually game? I'd wager the extra cost from a Vega 56 due to the higher power draw is negligible. If you under-volt the card it's even less. Do you check the power draw of a TV or washing machine before you buy it? Do you check the power draw of an oven before you buy it? Would you care if any of those items used a few watts extra over the other? I doubt that very much...
@@CoCo.-_- that's nice to her.
@@DJ_Dopamine A tv not so much as most are under 100w at max brightness, but washing machine, fridge, microwave and other large appliances should absolutely be looked at with powerdraw being a partial factor in purchase if you pay your own utility bills.
The cost difference over a year of gaming is roughly $30(factored at 600 hours of gaming a year, a little under 2 hours a day). Given a lot of people keep their cards for around 5 years, you are looking at an extra $150 over the lifespan of your system going with a vega 56 over a 1660ti (no 1660s available in power calculator). While this isnt huge at all, it is an example of an expense that exists but goes unnoticed by many. (small chunk of your next system upgrade)
The thing is, it isnt "a few watts extra". While the vega 56 is fast, it is VERY power hungry, at well over 250 watts at load (reported at up to 300 but lets be generous here) while the 1660ti is closer to 180w. you realize that is like having 6 extra lights on in your house for the time you are gaming...My parents always yelled at me for wasting power with extra lights on and this is largely where the problem with inefficient gpu's comes from.
This is hands down the best mid range GPU I've ever owned. If you can find one for a couple hundred dollars, do it.
I'd prefer AMD, but I'm probably going to buy a 1660s first. When I can see an amd/intel advantage over Nvidia I'm going to switch.

Because the Titan has always been known for the not worth it top of the line consumer gpu that's almost a quadro professional gpu...?
My takeaway is its fine but it doesn't need to exist - get a 1660TI if you can spare the extra couple bucks, but mostly look for a closeout vega56 if possible and the 590 aint bad for the price.
I'm waiting for a MSI GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER 6GB GAMING X Boost to arrive in the post tomorrow. I had the option of spending £340 on something bigger but decided the extra money would be wasted, bang for buck as the Americans would say. I added an SSD instead. Then again I'm not a hard core gamer.
It is the sweet spot for me.
Just in time for Black Friday, or Christmas at least.
Honestly, we're still seeing 1080p and 1440p benchmarks based on the price of these cards, when we know full well these cards along with their previous references, the 1070 and 980ti can do 4k. They may be at 30-60fps but it's worth doing. It seems with every new nvidia card the top end card of the previous cards start to receive benchmarks at lower resolutions because more powerful cards come out. These Xbox One X uses an RX580 - why are pc cards of the same performance getting benchmarked at lower than 4k, it doesn't make sense. I remember videos being posted about the gtx 1080ti being the ultimate card for 4k 60fps gaming. The cards aren't improving enough to notice a real difference.
More of what we don’t need nor asked. This card would only make sense if the others were discontinued.

I’ve been buying gpus since 2001. All these new cards are nice to have, but do any of you have the budget ? Great! Buy the latest greatest! but the naked truth is that you don’t need to set yourself back with a $700 gpu just to play pubg. Ask yourself.. how long will you actually play Witcher 3 on ultra? How long will you play GTA5 or fortnite? For me, I play games like Skyrim or Chivalry. Sometimes I’m playing warzone and battlefield on high/ultra with very good FPS and I spent less than $240. I want to make this card last 3 years then replace. I’m happy with the 1660 super. It’s the sweet spot for me and for my wallet. I don’t care much about Ray tracing or improved lighting. Unless you’re so detail oriented and care about the environment in the game, it’s not worth dishing out on these new expensive cards. You’ll just end up envying the nee Nvidia line 2-3 years from now and you feel like the rtx 2070 you bought is now old in 2022 lol! Save your money folks. Find the middle ground in GPU and be happy with your gaming. If you care about high FPS... go outside. It’s in 10k resolution. All you need is a pair of really good eyes.

I think the next GPU I'm going to get for my PC is the EVGA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti XC Black. I don't particularly need the best hardware, but I think in 2020, I'm going to get myself a new desktop and have the EVGA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti XC Black as my GPU. It'll be more than enough for my needs. As a matter of fact, I think in 2020, I'm going to build my first desktop PC. Does anyone have any tips on components? I prefer EVGA, Corsair, and Intel if that helps and I want a normal fan cooled desktop.
Why would you get the 1660 TI instead of the 1660 Super the Super is only 1.8% slower than the 1660 TI why would you waste $50 on the 1660 TI when you won't notice a difference between the 2 while gaming.
@Michael Gallagher I wouldn't say that's really necessary. They're over a year away from now and the effects they'll have won't really be noticeable until another two or so years from now anyway.
As long as you get any mid range Ryzen CPU, you won't really have any issue and better ray tracing cards more powerful than what will be in either console will be here by the time you'd upgrade from a 1660 Ti.
@xxnike629xx I wouldn't bother with the regular 1660 Ti. It's too close to the 1660 Super. It's practically irrelevant now.
Does anyone have any tips on components? I prefer EVGA, Corsair, and Intel if that helps and I want a normal fan cooled desktop.
The main things I'd recommend are a Ryzen processor and, if you can, 16GB since RAM is getting cheap. (If you can't, it's no worries though can always get 8 and add more later)
And don't cheap on the power supply. That's arguably one of the most important components. Don't need anything crazy expensive. Just long as isn't low quality $25 PSU or anything. EVGA has good ones like their BQ series from what I see. And 500W or 600W should be fine for most people.

Not sure what Nvidia is playing at here but this line up of cards is only going to confuse consumers and overall, the Vaga 56 seems like a better deal overall, it performs better and has 2GB more memory and for only slightly higher price, the only real downside is it uses more power but that overall works out as very little money over the long term, plus, I think Vaga cards are good for under volting.
This is great timing for me personally, I'm looking at buying a gaming laptop with a GTX 1660ti 6GB GDDR6, 16GB of DDR4 RAM @2666mhz with a 9th gen i7 9750H running the show. All I want is a rig that can play any game in 1080p/60fps with all other settings maxed. If anyone reading this who knows more than me would like to comment I'd greatly appreciate it.

Vega 56 wins. :)
Should i make a deal with my brother switching from a gtx 1070 to a vega 64 buy i need to pay him 50 bucks.. thr vega 64 is 320 usd
@@hugo9016 do it.
@@hugo9016 No, AMD driver support for the VEGA range is going to take a backseat to NAVI in a way Nvidia cards don't so much, although it's only 50$ it's a sidegrade, much better idea to sell your 1070 now, and put the 50$ toward a 5700XT, much better driver support to come.
It sure does, but as im going to be paying for my own power, and i follow my budgets and spending very closely, It will end up costing me more than a 2060s + power bill after 2.5 years at the rate i game. If you don't pay for power, or live somewhere with dirt cheap electricity prices, the vega 56 does indeed win. (same story for older cards like a used 980ti or gtx 1070/1080).
@@leeboy2k1 why have they stopped driver support for vega?
Can we please have something for ~200$ that's a significant leap over a 1060 already(which is a card that came out almost three and a half years ago!)? Nvidia is literally holding back PC gaming by being so stingy and slow.
Those times are over since the mining boom. nVidia want to keep prices high and they gave AMD an opening, so they don't want to be the budget gamers heroes either anymore. As Hardwareunboxed uses to say: "This is the new normal now, get used to it!". nVidia will sell you the same performance for the same price for a couple more years (aslong as people are willing to pay that). Well maybe the Rx 5500 will be your leap over 1060 for 200$. But from your comment I assume you are a "no AMD" guy.
How far can the memory of the 1660Ti be overclocked though? Thanks for the awesome video btw
Can performs close to 2060 if you have a decent ambient temp and case cooling
why you feature a Vega 56 and not the 5700?? seems odd
price!
@@coffee7180 thats why it seems odd the RTX2060 and the RX5700 have the same price
@@francasal1487 this is a 1660 super review and the vega 56 can be bought for 220-240 bucks so it's close to that price point.the other cards cost a lot more over 300 bucks mostly.
@@francasal1487 Because its the cheapest new Nvidia card that is a real step up. While the cheapest new AMD card is the vega 56 which actually shows the winner is the Vega 56
Does this have the new nvencoder that's on the rtx cards? I understand that the 1660 doesn't have it while the 1660 ti does have it. I wonder if the 1660 super has it.
It does.
So what would be next? 1660 TI-Super?
It starts to feel rather insulting at this point...
What if RX 5500/5500XT performs like RX Vega 56 for only $200? Only then Nvidia will inevitably release GTX 1660 Super Ti, lmao
At this rate there's no counter release for Nvidia. Just release a card for every performance level and hope for the best
LOLOL, read the comment above this one.
So, basically I should buy an RX 5700 then? I mean, the only other option is to save a hundred and change for a less powerful GPU that Nvidia will kill in three months when they release the 1660 Super TI for $231 and feel like an idiot like everyone else who bought an Nvidia card in the last year.
Digital i have a question how old is your Channel and how Long dit it Take to Cut a Video i mean Things Like gameplay and comparisons etc.
I really wonder how the Rtx 3000 series is gonna be when it comes to pricing and power.
Nothing makes sense anymore with the releases of the Rtx 1000-2000 series.
I mean, from logical stand point the weaker line up from the Rtx 3000 series, should be pushing more towards to 4k gaming since 8k is still far far away, while at the same time the gpus should cost less and use less power however we all know Nvidia will make them only more expensive.
But what about the higher line ups of the Rtx 3000 series?
From logical stand point the 3080/3080 ti should be focussing on 4k 144+ fps / 8k.
But than again this is not what Nvidia wants, its interesting to see Ray tracing getting released at a 'perfect' timing like this for Nvidia.
Now Nvidia has the excuse to make the 3080/3080ti versions still weak like the 2080 and 2080ti (price & performance wise) while the whole 3000 line up probably being the copy of the 2000 series but with the ability to run ray tracing normally as it supposed to be.
I am not sure how Nvidia is gonna convince Rtx 2070+ owners to jump on the Rtx 3000 bandwagon, unless they come up with a new graphical effect like RT or a massive performance boost i dont see a reason to upgrade.
Two times the amount of RT cores and 30% higher clock speed? When Turing can only run 2 RT effects at medium, and the RX3000 cards can run 5 RT effects at ultra, that pretty much makes Turing cards obsolete.
@@humanbeing9079 Only if RT becomes widely adopted. And I don't really see it happening in just one year.
is it better to buy gtx 1070 ti for 150 euros without warranty or gtx 1660 super for 190 euros with warranty?
Considering to buy a computer with this gpu in 2021. Is it still worth it ?
yes
Why not test it in 1080p?
I got the 1660 super ventus. its awesome. my 970 sucked.
how is temp on ur gigbyte 1660 super? do add it in benchmark !
Cant wait for the 1660ti super
can i use this gtx 1660super gpu for adobe premiere pro and after effects with amd ryzen 7 2700x cpu ?
1660 with 6gb RAM is 1666,right?
Is it DDR5?
next review 1650 super review ;D cant wait lol
I upgrade my 760 to 1660 thinking it was the best option for my budget backthen, but in just a few months they release 1660 super.. and btw at my country the price difference is just around $30 while ti version is around $80 from 1660.. my heart ache so much.. fck you nvidia
Seems like a redundant card. They should've just dropped the price of the 1660ti. Well, ideally, drop the price of every Nvidia card.
Nah, you need to keep buying AMD to turn your case into an easy bake oven.
i wish there was GTX 2080 TI with no RT cores and cheaper
Spend 400$ on a new GPU; can't even hit 60fps at 1440p.
LOL.
Trip D wait 5 years while monitor and tv companies make 8k and 16k displays 😁
@@DoodleDoo Gonna be fun watching old 360p youtube vids and torrents on an 8k screen lol
Hi Digital Foundry,
Make a review of "Acer nitro 7 an715-51 510a vs Asus TUF Gaming FX505DU"
Thank You.
I don't get the point of this card. The 1650 Super makes sense in that it's meant to compete with the RX 5500, but what does this accomplish? Are they hoping to beat the RX 5500 XT? Why not just cut the price of the 1660 Ti? Are they hoping they can beat the 5500 XT with just extra bandwidth?
The answer is literally in your question - Nvidia and cut pricing in one sentance... lol. Now, if they release another card instead - all AIBs will have to buy even more chips from them just so they can make those cards, chips that are literally the same as the 1660 they are already producing - win-win for Nvidia, huge bummer for the AIBs - good luck selling those 1660 they have in stock now. Nvidia is a pretty straight minded, it's always about the money.
Remember when Nvidia's lower and mid end cards were actually worth it? Now anything under $500, you're better off with AMD, and the 5500, and inevitable 5600 will come out and destroy the 1650 and this at a better price.
There is a reason for that, Nvidia is trying to push gamers onto higher tier gpu's to get more money out of gamers, it also doesn't help that Nvidia is confusing its line up in the lower and mid range of cards which gamers that are likely to buy in those ranges are less likely to know as much about gpu's.
@ahmed ghare Actually, both the 1650 super and 5500 are very close in performance terms, trading neck and neck from game to game, but the AMD 5500 works out cheaper to buy so that wins overall.
@ahmed ghare Lmao, the 1650 Super is $100 more, and still barely beats the 570, a now less than $100 GPU, in multiple new titles, the 570 still wins, or maintains a close fps.
The 5500 beats the 1650 Super in more titles than it loses, a simple benchmark test in many games shows this.
@ahmed ghare I'm from Canada, I can get a 590 8GB for $229, and a 8GB 580 or 570 at $419 and $169 respectively, and get a 4GB 570 for $119, yet the 8GB 1650 Super is starting at $529, a massive difference.
Only the 4GB models of the 1650 Super are even close to affordable for most consumers.
@ahmed ghare Prices are crazy here, a 5700 XT starts at $450 which is great, but a RTX 2070 is anywhere from $750 to over $1,000, madness.
I cannot wait for the 2030 Ti or the 2030 Super Version :D
Please review the update for Saints Row (Nintendo Switch)
you have way too much redundant information on the top right corner. Put it only once somewhere else.
that needs to be shown because you have to watch fkr fps drops
Same card but i get 80 celsius, open case...
